The power generated by the solar wind—magnetosphere dynamo is proportional to the amount of the open magnetic flux Φ. It is difficult to use this fact in determining observationally the dependence of Φ on the orientation of the interplanetary magnetic field vector. It is shown that, for a simple vacuum superposition of the earth's dipole field and a uniform magnetic field, Φ is very closely proportional to sin θ/2) for a wide range of the intensity of the uniform field, where θ denotes the polar angle of the interplanetary magnetic field vector in the Y-Z plane of solar-magnetospheric coordinates.  相似文献

We studied the cosmic ray intensity variation due to interplanetary magnetic clouds during an unusual class of low amplitude anisotropic wave train events. The low amplitude anisotropic wave train events in cosmic ray intensity have been identified using the data of ground based Deep River neutron monitor and studied during the period 1981–1994. Even though the occurrence of low amplitude anisotropic wave trains does not depend on the onset of interplanetary magnetic clouds, but the possibility of occurrence of these events cannot be overlooked during the periods of the interplanetary magnetic cloud events. It is observed that the solar wind velocity remains higher (> 300) than normal and the interplanetary magnetic field B remains lower than normal on the onset of the interplanetary magnetic cloud during the passage of low amplitude wave trains. It is also noted that the proton density remains significantly low during high solar wind velocity, which is expected. The north south component of interplanetary magnetic field Bz turns southward to one day before the arrival of cloud and remains in the southward direction after the arrival of a cloud. During these events the cosmic ray intensity is found to increase with increase of solar wind velocity. The superposed epoch analysis of cosmic ray intensity for these events during the onset of interplanetary magnetic clouds reveals that the decrease in cosmic ray intensity starts not at the onset of the cloud but after a few days. The cosmic ray intensity increases on arrival of the magnetic cloud and decreases gradually after the passage of the magnetic cloud.  相似文献

The propagation of solar Alfvén waves in interplanetary space is studied in the approximation of geometrical optics. Ray paths and the change of wave vectors and amplitudes along the rays are determined assuming an Archimedean-spiral interplanetary magnetic field. In particular, the Alfvénic fluctuations in the 2 directions perpendicular to the magnetic field direction are calculated under the assumption that the Alfvén waves are produced at the Sun and emitted with an isotropic directional distribution from a reference level close to the Sun. It turns out that due to the combined effect of spherical expansion of the solar wind flow and the spiralling of the interplanetary field the magnetic fluctuations in the direction perpendicular both to the unperturbed field and the radial direction have much more power than in the other directions (directional anisotropy). Our results are compared with spacecraft observations made by Belcher and Davis (1971), that show an anisotropy of a similar character. It is argued that under average conditions the physical process leading to an anisotropy is not selective coupling of Alfvén waves into compressional waves, as suggested by Belcher and Davis, but rather the above mentioned dissipationfree effect of geometrical optics. Finally, arguments are presented to explain the discrepancy between the calculated high anisotropy and the measured low anisotropy in terms of finite amplitude effects and wavescattering.  相似文献

Influence of cosmic ray pressure and kinetic stream instability on space plasma dynamics and magnetic structure are considered. It is shown that in the outer Heliosphere are important dynamics effects of galactic cosmic ray pressure on solar wind and interplanetary shock wave propagation as well as on the formation of terminal shock wave of the Heliosphere and subsonic region between Heliosphere and interstellar medium. Kinetic stream instability effects are important on distances more than 40–60 AU from the Sun: formation of great anisotropy of galactic cosmic rays in about spiral interplanetary magnetic field leads to the Alfven turbulence generation by non isotropic cosmic ray fluxes. Generated Alfven turbulence influences on cosmic ray propagation, increases the cosmic ray modulation, decreases the cosmic ray anisotropy and increases the cosmic ray pressure gradient in the outer Heliosphere (the later is also important for terminal shock wave formation). This revised version was published online in July 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.  相似文献

The spatial organization of the observed photospheric magnetic field, as well as its relation to the polarity of the interplanetary field, have been studied using high resolution magnetograms from Kitt Peak National Observatory. Systematic patterns in the large scale field have been found to be due to contributions from both concentrated flux and more diffuse flux. It is not necessary to assume, as has often been done in previous studies, that there is a weak background solar magnetic field causing the large-scale patterns in the photosphere, although the existence of such a field cannot be excluded. The largest scale structures in the photosphere correspond to the expected pattern at the base of a warped heliomagnetic equator. The polarity of the photospheric field, determined on various spatial scales, correlates with the polarity of the interplanetary field, with the most significant correlation due to mid-latitude fields. However, because the interplanetary field is likely to be rooted in concentrated photospheric regions, rather than across an entire polarity region, both the strength and polarity of the field are important in determining the interplanetary field. Thus studies of the interplanetary field which are based on either instrumental or numerical averaging of fields in the solar photosphere are subject to serious inherent limitations.Analyses based on several spatial scales in the photosphere suggest that new flux in the interplanetary medium is often due to relatively small photospheric features which appear in the photosphere up to one month before they are manifest at the Earth. The evolution of the over-all photospheric pattern may be due to individual sub-patterns which have slightly different rotation properties and which alternate in their relative dominance of the interplanetary medium.  相似文献

Observations of accelerated particle beams are used to probe the coronal and interplanetary magnetic field structures over large distances from the Sun on the order of a few AU and for various heliolatitudes. It is shown that the propagation of low energy particles is very much controled by discrete interplanetary magnetic field structures. These discrete magnetic structures are sometimes embedded within interplanetary solar wind plasma disturbances, commonly called CMEs. The connection between the corona and the interplanetary medium is discussed. These observations lead to new insights on the origin of accelerated particles detected in association with CMEs.  相似文献

The transport of cosmic rays in the interplanetary medium is considered in terms of the kinetic equation describing the energetic particle scattering by magnetic irregularities and their focusing by the regular interplanetary magnetic field. The analytical expression for solar cosmic ray distribution function in the approximation of radial regular magnetic field is obtained and the evolution of energetic particle angular distribution is analyzed. The obtained results can be used for the analysis of ground-level enhancements of cosmic ray intensity.  相似文献

We studied the causes of recurrent geomagnetic activity by analyzing interplanetary magnetic field and plasma data from Earth-orbiting spacecraft in the interval from November 1973 to February 1974. This interval includes the start of two long sequences of geomagnetic activity and two corresponding corotating interplanetary streams. In general, the geomagnetic activity was related to an electric field which was primarily due to two factors: (1) the ordered, mesoscale pattern of the stream itself and (2) random, smaller-scale fluctuations in the southward component of the interplanetary magnetic field Bz. The geomagnetic activity in each recurrent sequence consisted of two successive stages. The first stage was usually the most intense and it occurred during the passage of the interaction region at the front of a stream. It was related to a V × B electric field which was large primarily because the amplitude of the fluctuations in Bz was large in the interaction region. It is suggested that these large amplitudes of Bz were primarily produced in the interplanetary medium by compression of ambient fluctuations as the stream steepened in transit to 1 A.U. The second stage of geomagnetic activity immediately following the first was associated with the highest speeds in the stream. It was, among other things, related to a V × B electric field which was large mainly because of the high speeds.  相似文献

The interplanetary magnetic field has been mapped between 0.4 and 1.2 AU in the ecliptic plane, extrapolating from satellite measurements at 1 AU. The structure within sectors and the evolution of sectors are discussed. The development of a solar active region appears to produce magnetic loops in the interplanetary medium that result in the formation of a new sector.  相似文献

In the following study our aim is to analyse the magnetic flux-rope topology of some events observed in the interplanetary medium related to ejecta. The magnetic field structures associated with interplanetary coronal mass ejections are globally classified in magnetic clouds and ejecta. One of the main questions regarding these phenomena concerns their flux-rope or non-flux-rope magnetic field line configuration. From the experimental measurements the only way to elucidate such a question is analysing the corresponding data by means of a flux-rope physical model. After selecting the ejecta events observed during the period 1997?–?2006, we have analysed them in light of an analytical model with that topology for the magnetic field components, initially developed for magnetic clouds, and with a non-force-free character; then, incorporating the expansion of the magnetic structure during their evolution in the interplanetary medium. Different parameters obtained from the fitting of the model are related to the orientation of the axis of the magnetic flux-rope structure and, additionally, the closest distance approach of the spacecraft to its axis. One of the main conclusions achieved concerns the fact that the axes of most of those structures are close to the Sun–Earth line, which implies that the passage of the spacecraft through the corresponding ejecta event is by its flank. In general, we show a rough procedure for the analysis and classification of ejecta in terms of their magnetic field topology.  相似文献

Strong cylindrical magnetogasdynamic shock waves in rotating interplanetary medium has been studied and an analytic solution for their propagation has been obtained. Using characteristic method and considering the effect of Coriolis force, we have shown that magnetic field has significant effect on the velocity of the shock wave.  相似文献

The evolutionary state of slow forward shock waves is examined with the use of two MHD numerical codes. Our study is intended to be exploratory rather than a detailed parametric one. The first code is one-dimensional (with three components of velocity and magnetic field) which is used to follow a slow shock that propagates into a positive gradient of density versus distance. It is found that the slow shock evolves into an extraneous (intermediate) shock wave. The second code has a spherical, one-dimensional, planar geometry (with two velocity and magnetic field components) which is used to follow a spiral interplanetary magnetic field. It is found that a slow shock type perturbation can generate a forward slow shock; a fast forward shock is generated in the front of the slow shock; a contact discontinuity is formed behind the slow shock, and a compound nonlinear MHD wave is formed behind the contact discontinuity with a fast reverse shock formed further behind. Thus, we demonstrate that the evolution of a slow shock into (solely) a fast shock, as suggested by Whang (1987), is much more complicated.  相似文献

In this paper we discuss the main-phase evolution of intense magnetic storms, associated with the passage of different interplanetary magnetic structures. It is shown that their evolution, driven by intense magnetic fields in the sheath region just behind interplanetary shocks, evolves faster (implying physically different magnetospheric configurations) than that associated with intense magnetic fields in the ejecta itself and in corotating streams. The estimated ring-current injection rate for the main phase of intense magnetic storms caused by sheath fields is ∼10 times greater than the estimated injection rate for N–S magnetic clouds. Based on these results, we propose storm-intensity criteria for several classes of the driving interplanetary structures. The time necessary to reach a Dst/SYM index threshold level is an important parameter for a space weather forecast.  相似文献

We describe a new method to derive the interplanetary magnetic field (IMF) out to 1 AU from photospheric magnetic field measurements. The method uses photospheric magnetograms to calculate a source surface magnetic field at 15R. Specifically, we use Wilcox Solar Observatory (WSO) magnetograms as input for the Stanford Current-Sheet Source-Surface (CSSS) model. Beyond the source surface the magnetic field is convected along velocity flow lines derived by a tomographic technique developed at UCSD and applied to interplanetary scintillation (IPS) observations. We compare the results with in situ data smoothed by an 18-h running mean. Radial and tangential magnetic field amplitudes fit well for the 20 Carrington rotations studied, which are largely from the active phase of the solar cycle. We show exemplary results for Carrington rotation 1965, which includes the Bastille Day event.  相似文献

Based on the data of the high-apogee satellite Prognoz-3, the April 29–30, 1973 solar particle event is analysed. The event's complex energetic particle, interplanetary magnetic field and solar wind plasma properties are discussed. The unusual behaviour of solar particles up to energies 100 MeV can well be explained in terms of the interaction with an interplanetary shock wave system passing the Earth. Assuming that the structure of the interplanetary shock wave system is similar to that considered first by Parker (1961) and Gold (1959) and reviewed later by Hundhausen (1972) and Dryer (1974, 1975), the main characteristics of the energetic particle fluxes, solar wind and interplanetary magnetic field can be understood.  相似文献

Cosmic-ray intensity data recorded with the ground-based neutron monitor at Deep River have been investigated taking into account the associated interplanetary magnetic field and solar-wind plasma data during 1981 – 1994. A large number of days having abnormally high or low amplitudes for five or more successive days as compared to the annual average amplitude of diurnal anisotropy have been taken as high- or low-amplitude anisotropic wave-train events. The amplitude of the diurnal anisotropy of these events is found to increase on days with a magnetic cloud as compared to the days prior to the event, and it is found to decrease during the later period of the event as the cloud passes the Earth. The high-speed solar-wind streams do not play any significant role in causing these types of events. However, corotating solar-wind streams produce significant deviations in cosmic-ray intensity during high- and low-amplitude events. The interplanetary disturbances (magnetic clouds) are also effective in producing cosmic-ray decreases. Hα solar flares have a good positive correlation with both the amplitude and direction of the anisotropy for high-amplitude events, while the principal magnetic storms have a good positive correlation with both amplitude and direction of the anisotropy for low-amplitude events. The source responsible for these unusual anisotropic wave trains in cosmic rays has been proposed.  相似文献

The distance to the dayside magnetopause is statistically analyzed in order to detect the possible dependence of the dayside magnetic flux on the polarity of the interplanetary magnetic field. The effect of changing solar wind pressure is eliminated by normalizing the observed magnetopause distances by the simultaneous solar wind pressure data. It is confirmed that the normalized size of the dayside magnetosphere at the time of southward interplanetary magnetic field is smaller than that at the time of northward interplanetary magnetic field. The difference in the magnetopause position between the two interplanetary field polarity conditions ranges from 0 to 2RE. Statistics of the relation between the magnetopause distance and the magnetic field intensity just inside the magnetopause testifies that the difference in the magnetopause position is not due to a difference in the magnetosheath plasma pressure. The effect of the southward interplanetary magnetic field is seen for all longitudes and latitudes investigated (|λGM|? 45°, |φSM|? 90°). These results strongly suggest that a part of the dayside magnetic flux is removed from the dayside at the time of southward interplanetary magnetic field.  相似文献

We have considered the character of radio wave absorption variations in the auroral zone, depending on the relative number of sunspots over a 11-yr cycle and on a interplanetary magnetic field (IMF) sector polarity, by using observations carried out at Murmansk, by the Al method, at noon throughout 1959 to 1967. It was shown that the abnormal absorption occurrence frequencies as well as the background absorption values are generally bigger in the case of the IMF directed away from the Sun. The difference, caused by IMF sector polarity, of both values is subject to regular quasi-two-year variations.  相似文献
