Summary The principal moments of the Earth's inertia and their differences have been computed and their actual accuracy estimated on the basis of the most recent values of the 2nd degree geopotential parameters (model GEM-T2) and of the parameter H in the precession constant. The contributions due to the zero frequency zonal term in the tidal potential have been determined.

Calculation of particle distribution by the data on spectral transparency

, , . . , , , . , , .Summary A general method for obtain the particle size distribution curve of the dispersed system is developed according to data of its spectral transparency, based onMellin's transformation. The method does not contain any arbitrary suppositions about spectrum character of particles. A simple calculation scheme is supposed, examples of inversion are given, the range of spectrum and the accuracy of transparency measurements necessary to obtain the inversion with a given accuracy are estimated. Summary The paper is concerned with the mathematical properties of the density distribution within the Earth obtained by inverting of the external gravity field, provided an Earth's reference density model, used as the initial guess, is available. Bicubic spline smoothing of the data given at points of a rectangular network

Summary A computational method for fitting smoothed natural or periodic bicubic splines to data given at the grid points of a rectangular network is proposed. The one-dimensional smoothed spline fit, introduced by Reinsch, defines the smoothness properties well. These are generalized for a two-dimensional approximation by solving the corresponding variational problem. The defining equations are presented here together with an efficient method of determining the necessary parameters and computing the resultant spline.

On the question of carbon dioxide heat radiation in the atmosphere

Summary The new, more reliable data on transmisson function of the atmosphere in the region of 12–18 carbon dioxide absorption band are obtained. The radiation chart for calculations of atmospheric heat radiation is built on the base of this data. The dependence of atmospheric heat radiation on CO₂ and H₂O contents and also on temperature vertical distribution is investigated with the help of the radiation chart. It is shown, that the heat radiation of the atmosphere almost doesn't depend on variations of carbon dioxide content in the atmosphere. The income of atmospheric heat radiation in the region of spectra from 12 to 18 in integrated atmospheric radiation is determined.

Gravitational potential inside 3-D inhomogeneous earth: A boundary — Value problem for the Poisson equation

Summary The problem of determining the gravitational potential inside the Earth is discussed under assumptions that the 3-D density distribution is known, that the external gravity field is described by known Stokes parameters and, finally, that the smoothed Earth surface is defined by a set of topography coefficients. The spectral method was used to separate the angular and radial parts. The solution of Poisson's equation for the internal gravitational potential was reduced to a system of ordinary differential equations with homogeneous boundary conditions and to a system of linear algebraic equations.

Linear stability of a non-constantly stratified horizontal layer penetrated by an azimuthal magnetic field

Summary The convection in a rapidly rotating, electrically conducting, horizontal fluid layer, non-constantly stratified and penetrated by an inhomogeneous magnetic field, is studied. The convection is investigated for various ratios of the thickness of the stable and unstable stratified part of the layer. The thermal model of the layer, as well as the analysis of the results have been treated with regard to the physical conditions in the liquid core of the Earth.

Seismotectonic model of the upper part of the Earth's crust of Czechoslovakia

Summary A correlation of the earthquake occurrence on the territory of Czechoslovakia and in its close neighbourhood with the data on the neotectonic and geomorphological development of the respective area, the recent movements of the Earth's crust, the courses of photolineations and on the geophysical fields enabled the fundamental structural blocks in the upper part of the Earth's crust to be singled out. The contact zones established between the above blocks exhibit increased long-term movement tendencies particularly in the Neoid period. A seismotectonic model of the upper part of the Earth's crust of Czechoslovakia, compiled with the use of the data mentioned above, is described.

Relation between the field of surface heat flow and the distribution ofP n -wave velocities for continents

Summary The dependence between P_n-wave velocities and the surface heat flow, temperature at the core-mantl boundary and thickness of the Earth's crust for continents (Europe, Asia, North America and Australia) was investigated statistically in connection with the problem of lateral inhomogeneities in the upper mantle. The relations obtained were compared with those determined under laboratory conditions. The conclusion is that temperature and pressure effects may provide additional explanations of the regional variations of P_n-wave velocities observed in most continents.

Determination of tidal torques independently of densities

Summary The components of the tidal torques along the axes of the inertia ellipsoid of a perfectly elastic Earth have been derived quite independently of the density distribution of masses within the Earth. It has been demonstrated that not only the sectorial, but also the tesseral terms in the tidal forming potential are responsible for the tidal deceleration of the Earth's rotation.
