We analysed multifrequency 2-dimensional maps of the solar corona obtained with the Nançay radioheliograph during two solar rotations in 1986. We discuss the emission of the quiet Sun, coronal holes and local sources and its association with chromospheric and coronal features as well as with large-scale magnetic fields. The brightness temperature of the quiet Sun was 5 to 5.5 × 105 K at 164 MHz and 4.5 to 5 × 105 K at 408 MHz. A coronal hole, also detected in the 10830 Å He i line, had a brightness temperature of 4.5 × 105 at 164 and 2.5 × 105 at 408 MHz. We give statistics of source brightness temperatures (on the average 8% above the background at 164 MHz and 14% at 408 MHz), as well as distributions in longitude and latitude. Although we found no significant center-to-limb effect in the brightness temperature, the sources were not visible far from the central meridian (apparently a refraction effect). The brightest sources at 164 MHz were near, but not directly above active regions and had characteristics of faint type I continua. At 408 MHz some sources were observed directly above active regions and one was unambiguously a type I continuum. The majority of the fainter sources showed no association with chromospheric features seen on H synoptic charts, including filaments. Most of them were detected at one frequency only. Sources identified at three frequencies (164, 327, and 408 MHz) were located in regions of enhanced large-scale magnetic field, some of them at the same location as decayed active regions visible one rotation before on synoptic H charts. Multifrequency sources are associated with maxima of the green line corona. The comparison with K-corona synoptic charts shows a striking association of the radio sources with dense coronal regions, associated with the coronal neutral sheet. Furthermore, we detected an enhanced brightness region which surrounds the local sources and is stable over at least one solar rotation. We call this feature a coronal plateau and we identify it with the radio counterpart of the coronal neutral sheet.  相似文献

We report the results of the first observations of solar coronal bright points at 6 cm wavelength using the Very Large Array (VLA), with a spatial resolution of 1.2. The maximum brightness temperature of the sources observed is 3 × 104 K with a mean value of 1 × 104 K (above the quiet Sun value). The lifetime of most sources is between 5 and 20 min. The average diameter of the sources is about 5–15 arc. The sources are gaussian-like near the footpoint of miniature loops and they appear in groups. The observations indicate that significant fluctuations in the brightness temperature (sometimes quasi-periodic) and in the spatial extents of these sources can occur over periods of a few minutes. On leave from Beijing Observatory, Beijing, Peoples Republic of China.  相似文献

The radio observations of the coronal streamers obtained using Clark Lake radioheliograph at 73.8, 50.0, and 38.5 MHz during a period of minimum activity in September 1986 are presented. Streamers appear to correlate with two prominent disk sources whose intensities fluctuated randomly. The variations in half-power diameter of the radio Sun are found to correspond with the variations in the white-light extents of the coronal streamers. It appears that the shape of the radio Sun is not a function of the phase of the solar cycle; instead it depends on the relative positions of the streamers in the corona. The observed peak brightness temperatures,T B , of the streamers are found to be very low, being 6 × 104 K.We compute the brightness temperature distribution along the equator by tracing the rays in the coronal plasma. The rays are deflected away by the streamers before reaching the critical density level, whereas they penetrate deeper into the coronal hole for small angles between the line of sight and the streamer axis. As a consequence, it is found that the streamers and coronal holes appear in the calculated equatorial brightness distribution as irregular brightness depressions and enhancements, respectively. The fine structures are found to disappear when the scattering due to small-scale density inhomogeneities is included in the ray-tracing calculations. The required relative level of density fluctuations, 1 = N/N, is found to be greater than 12% to reduce the peak brightness temperature from 106 K to 6 × 104 K for all the three frequencies. On leave from Indian Institute of Astrophysics, Bangalore 560034, India.  相似文献

The quiet component of the 9.1-cm solar radio emission is studied from the Stanford radioheliograms covering the period April–October 1964. The distribution of the brightness temperature in heliographic coordinates is not entirely uniform, but positive and negative departures from the average value appear at a number of stable locations. The most important negative departure crosses the central meridian 4 days before the maximum of the recurrent geomagnetic activity. Two out of three less important brightness depressions are connected with geomagnetic disturbances in the same manner. It is suggested that the brightness depressions are identical with M-regions.The result is confirmed by the construction of polytrope models for the solar wind, for various values of the parameters (the polytrope index) and T (the temperature in the inner corona). The velocities near the earth's orbit and in the inner corona are computed as functions of the model parameters, the density results from the observed proton flux at 1 AU. For quiet conditions the model with T = 1.26 × 106 K and = 1.10 is appropriate. The corresponding density and temperature in the corona lead to a value of 4000 K for the contribution of the corona to the 9-cm brightness. For disturbed conditions the suitable model has the parameters T 2.0 × 106 K, a 1.04. It being given that the proton flux at 1 AU is relatively constant, the equation of continuity leads to a low coronal density because of the high solar-wind velocity. The corresponding coronal contribution to the 9-cm brightness is of the order of 10 K. This confirms that the brightness temperature is considerably reduced in the regions where the enhanced solar wind originates. We suggest the name coronal depression for such regions.Papers II and III will appear in forthcoming issues of this journal.  相似文献

We study the characteristics of microbursts using a large data base obtained with the multifrequency radioheliograph of the Clark Lake Radio Observatory. Most of the new observations were made during July 29, 1985 to August 2, 1985; we also include for statistical studies the microburst data used in our earlier studies. We perform a statistical analysis of many characteristics such as frequency drift, source size and brightness temperature and compare them with the properties of normal type III bursts. We investigate the coronal structures and surface activities associated with some of the events. We find that (i) the brightness temperature is in the range 6 × 105 K to 6 × 107 K; (ii) the drift rate of the microbursts is slightly smaller than that of normal type III bursts, implying electron beams with speeds 0.2c.We explore various theoretical interpretations of the observed low brightness temperatures. We show that the microbursts can be explained as due to spontaneously emitted Langmuir waves by electron beams whereas normal type III bursts are due to coherently emitted plasma waves in a two-stream instability. We estimate the range of number densities for electron beams responsible for microbursts. On leave from Indian Institute of Astrophysics, Bangalore, India.  相似文献

The brightness distribution of the equatorial region of the Sun has been investigated at 2.8 cm with an east-west resolution of 16.1, for the following days: 30 June, 1 July, 3 July and 4 July, 1972. The results confirm the existence of very intense cores inside active regions with typical sizes of the order of 10–30 and brightness temperatures in the range of 105 K, with possible peaks up to 6 × 106 K. The relationship of these features to the H structure is also discussed.  相似文献

A single loop associated with a flare of 21 January 1974 was studied with NRL spectroheliograms in order to understand the phenomenon of evaporation. The loop seen in the emission lines of Fe xv reached its maximum brightness 15 min after the onset. The loop is different from a flare loop because of the time sequence in which it appeared and is different from a post-flare loop prominence system because of its morphology. The electron density in the loop increases gradually to 4 × 1010 cm–3. The material of the loop is thought to be supplied from the lower atmosphere of the chromosphere or the photosphere. The loop is an associated phenomenon of the main flare event distinguished by a longer rise time (15 min) and a lower peak temperature (2 × 106 K).  相似文献

We have observed the slowly varying component of solar radio emission at a frequency of 34.5 MHz with half power beam widths of 26/40 in the east-west and north-south directions, respectively. It is found that the observed brightness temperatures vary within the limits of 0.3×106K to 1.5×106K, and the average half power widths of the brightness distribution on the Sun is about 3R . Thermal emission from coronal regions of various electron densities and temperatures with and without the magnetic field has been computed and compared with the observed results.  相似文献

The statistical equilibrium equations for the continuum and first 10 levels of a hydrogen atom show that the radiation of a bright prominence (the brightness of the H line has attained 56 mÅ of the disc centre spectrum) is completely due to scattering of the Sun radiation. The basic unknowns are separated with certainty: electron concentration (n e = 3.0 × 1010 cm–3), effective thickness (l = 4.2 × 108 cm) and electron temperature (T e = 5000 K).Radiation of a very bright prominence (A (H) = 213 mÅ; T e = 7300 K; n e = 5.0 × 1011 cm–3; l = 1.3 × 107 cm) is on account of electron impacts (40%) and the Sun radiation scattering (60%).The parameters are shown to depend greatly on the prominence optical thickness in the lines of the first subordinate series of a hydrogen atom. In the course of determination all the parameters and 100 interconnected integral equations of the radiation diffusion have been thickness-averaged; the population of levels has been calculated by observations using the self-absorption factors.  相似文献

Observations of the post-flare loop system formed after the east limb proton flare of 12 August 1970 include (a) sets of filtergrams from which photographic subtractions have been constructed and (b) spectra from which a distribution of electron density as a function of temperature for three coronal regions are derived. The filtergrams show no indications of radial velocities in excess of 80 km/s. The spectra indicate an increase in density at the tops of the loops with most of the material at a relatively cool temperature: N 6.0 × 1010, T = 3 × 105K. The distribution functions obtained for areas just above and just below loops indicate a lower electron density and the presence of material at high temperatures, N 2.0 × 1010 and T 2.6 × 106K (above the loops) and T e > > 4.4 × 106K for material below the loops.  相似文献

The development of three intense active centers during their appearance on the solar disk is examined using high resolution observations at 2.8 cm. Each region shows a very bright component with brightness temperature > 106 K and size smaller than 20.The development of the bright components have been investigated on different time scales. Intensity fluctuations on a time scale of minutes are within the instrumental accuracy while the evolution over periods of days shows a variation of the flux density up to 30–40% per day.The problem of the bright cores height is discussed. Heights within 10 × 103 and 40 × 103 km are found using their apparent displacement on the disk.  相似文献

A flare observed with the Hard X-Ray Imaging Spectrometer (HXIS) was studied during its rise to maximum temperature and X-ray emission rate. Two proximate flare loops, of lengths 2.8 × 109 cm and 1.1 × 1010 cm, rose to temperatures of 21.5 × 106 K and 30 × 106 K, respectively, in 30 s. Assuming equal heat flux F into each loop from a thermal source at the point where they met, we derive a simple relationship between temperature T and loop length , which gives a loop temperture ratio of 0.68, in close agreement with the observed ratio of 0.72. The observations imply that heating in each loop was maintained by a thermal flux of 5 × 109 ergs cm-2 s-1. It is suggested that conductive heating adequately describes the rise and maximum phase emissions in the loops and that long flare loops reach higher temperatures than short loops during the impulsive phase because of an equipartition of energy between them at their point of interaction.  相似文献

Observations of the ionized hydrogen region NGC 1499 have been carried out with the radio telescope UTR-2 at frequencies 12.6, 14.7, 16.7, 20 and 25 MHz. The half-power resolution of the instrument to zenith is 28×34 at 25 MHz. The average volume density of the non-thermal radio emission between the Sun and the nebula (1.75×10–40 W m–3 Hz–1 ster–1 at 25 MHz), the electron temperature of the HII nebula (T e =4400 K), the measure of emission (ME=1500 cm–6 pc) and other parameters have been obtained. Maps of brightness distribution over the source are presented for each observation frequency. The results are compared with previously obtained data.  相似文献

The temperature and density structure of a typical coronal active region is deduced from X-ray observations of several active regions. Observations of the limb transits of three regions from OSO-5 indicate that the X-ray emission originates between 2 × 104 km and 1.5 × 105 km. An emission measure-temperature distribution is deduced from high resolution X-ray spectra obtained with a rocket observation of two similar regions. These observations are combined to give a model of a typical active region, the temperature varying from 2 to 6 × 106 K with corresponding densities between 2 × 109 and 1010 cms–3.  相似文献

We have made high resolution observations of HCN (1-0) emission from the carbon star Y Canum Venaticorum using the Nobeyama Millimeter Array. We find that the emission region is not well resolved by the synthesized beam of 3.7 × 4.6 over the entire velocity range (VLSR =10 to 35 km s–1). We find that the true brightness temperature probably exceeds 200 K at many velocity channels as well as at the 26 km s–1 maser spike. The broad emission component may be the result of superimposed maser spikes. The high brightness requires an unreasonably high HCN fractional abundance if LTE is assumed. It is likely that the HCN abundance previously reported for the star is considerably affected by the maser action. A new maser spike has been found at VLSR = 29 km s–1  相似文献

An analysis of the results of observations of the symbiotic star Z And has shown that no definite model can be derived at present on their basis. If the hot component is essentially an accreting white dwarf with a hydrogen-burning shell source, then the gas envelope must be optically thin for Lc-emission and itsT e must be in the neighborhood of 2.6×104K. And if the hot component is a Main-Sequence star with an accretion disk around it, then it is classified with red dwarfs. The electron temperature of the gas envelope must be 1.5×104K. The luminosity of the hot component at the minimum of its visual brightness is only a few times lower than its Eddington limit. Therefore, as the accretion rate goes up, the initial increase in its brightness (U1 m .5), unaccompanied by any perceptible changes in the spectrum of Z And, will be followed by disintegration of the regular disk and flare of the star in the visible range. In the same model, partial eclipses of the hot source must occur. They seem to be observable on the star's light curve in theU band. Substitution of a solar-type star for the first-named component in the binary red dwarf + red giant system will lead to a significant decrease in the excitation of the combination spectrum.  相似文献

A strong S-component of solar radiation was identified during the total solar eclipse of November 12, 1966. Its characteristics, as measured at 4.28 cm, were studied in terms of flux and polarization, and its spectral features were derived by the use of data from other observatories. The whole source presented approximately the typical characteristics suggested by some authors in the last few years, and further it has been shown that it could be resolved into at least two enhanced regions, one showing unpolarized radiation with a brightness temperature T b 1.2 × 106 °K, and the other showing 50% of left-handed circularly polarized radiation, with T b 0.7 × 106 °K. The source's overall characteristics favour the presence of non-thermal absorption at the emitting regions.  相似文献

An attempt is made to specify coronal hole boundaries in the brightness of 284 of Fe xv. This is done by evaluating brightnesses of 284 at boundaries selected by various groups. These results are in quite good agreement and suggest a brightness value of (0.8±0.4)×1012 photons cm–2 s–1 sr–1 for coronal hole boundaries in 284. The examination of a number of isophote maps near this boundary brightness shows no consistent brightness gradient.  相似文献

We have studied the properties and evolution of several active regions observed at multiple wavelengths over a period of about 10 days. We have used simultaneous microwave (1.5 and 17 GHz) and soft X-ray measurements made with the Very Large Array (VLA), the Nobeyama Radio Heliograph (NRH) and the Soft X-ray Telescope (SXT) on board the Yohkoh spacecraft, as well as photospheric magnetograms from KPNO. This is the first detailed comparison between observations at radio wavelengths differing by one order of magnitude. We have performed morphological and quantitative studies of active region properties by making inter-comparison between observations at different wavelengths and tracking the day-to-day variations. We have found good general agreement between the 1.5 and 17 GHz radio maps and the soft X-rays images. The 17 GHz emission is consistent with thermal bremsstrahlung (free-free) emission from electrons at coronal temperatures plus a small component coming from plasma at lower temperatures. We did not find any systematic limb darkening of the microwave emission from active regions. We discuss the difference between the observed microwave brightness temperature and the one expected from X-ray data and in terms of emission of a low temperature plasma at the transition region level. We found a coronal optical thickness of 10-3 and 1 for radiation at 17 and 1.5 GHz, respectively. We have also estimated the typical coronal values of emission measure ( 5 × 1028 cm-5), electron temperature ( 4.5 × 1066 K) and density ( 1.2 × 109 cm3). Assuming that the emission mechanism at 17 GHz is due to thermal free-free emission, we calculated the magnetic field in the source region using the observed degree of polarization. From the degree of polarization, we infer that the 17 GHz radiation is confined to the low-lying inner loop system of the active region. We also extrapolated the photospheric magnetic field distribution to the coronal level and found it to be in good agreement with the coronal magnetic field distribution obtained from microwave observations.  相似文献

The ionization conditions in coronal loops are investigated in the temperature range 2 × 105–2 × 106K, assuming velocity, density and temperature distributions computed for a siphon model of a pure hydrogen plasma. Use is made of the set of the carbon ions as an example of the general behaviour of the ions characteristic of that temperature range. It is found that the deviation from equilibrium ionization is large for subsonic-supersonic flow if the density is less than 5 × 109cm–-3, with the exception of the lower part of the first leg of very cool loops (T 2 × 10 K). With this exception cooler loops, given their larger density drop along the axis, show deviations from ionization equilibrium more easily than hotter ones, in spite of their lower flow velocity. We conclude that the possibility of a non-equilibrium state must be taken into account when deducing from measurements of line intensities the temperature of loops in which a flow may occur. Now at Institute for Plasma Research, Stanford University, as an E.S.A.
