Bromine was historically termed a cyclic salt in terrestrial freshwater environments due to its perceived conservative cycling between the oceans and the continents. This basic assumption has been challenged recently, with evidence that bromine is involved in dynamic chemical cycles in soils and freshwaters. We present here a study on dissolved bromine species (bromide, organically bound bromine, DOBr) concentrations and fluxes as well as sediment trap bromine levels and fluxes in Lake Constance, a large lake in southern Germany. Water samples were obtained from all major and some minor inflows and outflows over one year, where-after dissolved bromine species were measured by a combination of ICP-MS and ion chromatography coupled to an ICP-MS (IC-ICP-MS). Sediment traps were deployed at two locations for two years with Br, Ti and Zr levels being measured by μ-XRF.190 t yr−1 of total dissolved bromine (TDBr) was delivered to the lake via 14 rivers and precipitation, with the rivers Alpenrhein (84 t TDBr yr−1) and the Schussen (50 t TDBr yr−1) providing the largest sources. The estimated particulate bromine flux contributed an extra 24-26 t Br yr−1. In comparison, only 40 t TDBr yr−1 was deposited to the lake’s catchment by precipitation, and thus ∼80% of the riverine TDBr flux came from soils and rocks. Bromide was the dominant species accounting for, on average, 78% of TDBr concentrations and 93% of TDBr flux to the lake. Despite some high concentrations in the smaller lowland rivers, DOBr was only a minor component of the total riverine bromine flux (∼12 t yr−1, 7%), most of which came from the rivers Schussen, Bregenzer Ach and Argen. In contrast, most of the bromine in the sediment traps was bound to organic matter, and showed a clear seasonal pattern in concentrations, with a maximum in winter and minimum in summer. The summer minimum is thought to be due to dilution of a high Br autochthonous component by low bromine mineral and organic material from the catchment, which is supported by Ti, Zr and Br/Corg data. In the lake bromine was irreversibly lost to the sediments, with best flux estimates based on mass-balance and sediment trap data of +50-90 μg Br m−2 d−1. Overall, it appears that bromine is not simply a cyclic salt in the case of Lake Constance, with a clear geological component and dynamic lacustrine biogeochemistry.  相似文献

A tentative mass balance of dissolved Li in the oceans suggests that basalt-seawater reactions play an important role in the Li cycle. However, removal of dissolved Li by basalt during reactions at low or moderate temperatures cannot compensate totally for inputs owing to basalt-seawater reactions at high temperatures and to continental run-off. We propose that the Li budget in the oceans is balanced by incorporation of Li into authigenic clay minerals. Li concentration profiles in the water column support this model. Basalt-seawater reactions at high temperatures seem to affect strongly the distribution of dissolved Li in interstitial waters of overlying sediments, suggesting that this element can be used as an indicator of hydrothermal reactions in the basaltic basement.  相似文献

During the Holocene, a great amount of carbon has been stored in the peaty soils beneath the wet coastal tundra at Barrow, Alaska, and in the wet peatlands of the bottomland taiga near Fairbanks, Alaska. On the basis of fossil pollen, plant macrofossil spectra, and present vegetation, an attempt is made to estimate rough carbon budgets for the present and during the last 5000 years at these sites. Carbon capture and carbon accumulation rates have varied cyclically in the past at both sites. However, both tundra and taiga have remained sinks for atmospheric CO2 through this time. In view of the probable warming of these climates due to increasing atmospheric CO2 concentrations, future fates of this carbon, now stored in permafrost, are in doubt. Future carbon balances may be quite different from those that have prevailed during the Holocene and at present. These ecosystems may well become carbon sources rather than remain carbon sinks. The use of field and phytotron simulation experiments is suggested as well as the use of mathematical models in attempting to predict the future of these carbon-rich ecosystems in the 21st and 22nd centuries.  相似文献

The giant Dahutang tungsten (W) deposit has a total reserve of more than 1.31 Mt WO3. Veinlet-disseminated scheelite and vein type wolframite mineralization are developed in this deposit, which are related to Late Mesozoic biotite granite. Four major types of alterations, which include albitization, potassic-alteration, and greisenization, and overprinted silicification developed in contact zone. The mass balance calculate of the four alteration types were used to further understanding of the mineralization process. The fresh porphyritic biotite granite has high Nb, Ta, and W, but low Ca and Sr while the Jiuling granodiorite has high Ca and Sr, but low Nb, Ta, and W concentrations. The altered porphyritic biotite granite indicated that the Nb, Ta, and W were leached out from the fresh porphyritic biotite granite, especially by sodic alteration. The low Ca and Sr contents of the altered Neoproterozoic Jiuling granodiorite indicate that Ca and Sr had been leached out from the fresh granodiorite by the fluid from Mesozoic porphyritic biotite granites. The metal W of the Dahutang deposit was mainly derived from the fluid exsolution from the melt and alteration of W-bearing granites. This study of alteration presents a new hydrothermal circulation model to understand tungsten mineralization in the Dahutang deposit.  相似文献

The community of climatologists predicts a progressive global warming [IPCC Fourth Assessment Report—Climate Change, 2007. The Scientific Basis. Cambridge University Press, Cambridge] that will not be interrupted by a glacial inception for the next 50 ka [Berger and Loutre, 2002. An exceptionally long Interglacial ahead? Science 297, 1287–1288]. These predictions are based on continuously increasing anthropogenic greenhouse gas emissions and on the orbital forcing that will provide only muted insolation variations for the next 50 ka. To assess the potential climate development without human interference, we analyse climate proxy records from Europe and the North Atlantic of Marine Isotope Stage (MIS) 11 (423–362 ka BP), an interval when insolation variations show a strong linear correlation with those of the recent past and the future. This analysis suggests that the insolation minimum at 397 ka BP, which provides the best available analogue to the present insolation minimum, terminated interglacial conditions in Europe. At that time, tundra–steppe vegetation spread in Central Europe and pine forests dominated in the eastern Mediterranean region. Because the intensities of the 397 ka BP and present insolation minima are very similar, we conclude that under natural boundary conditions the present insolation minimum holds the potential to terminate the Holocene interglacial. Our findings support the Ruddiman hypothesis [Ruddiman, W., 2003. The Anthropogenic Greenhouse Era began thousands of years ago. Climate Change 61, 261–293], which proposes that early anthropogenic greenhouse gas emission prevented the inception of a glacial that would otherwise already have started.  相似文献

The pollution of soil with heavy metals has direct or indirect adverse effect on human health. The present work was conducted to identify all the expected sources and sinks for heavy metals by applying mass balance model to identify the retention rate of metals by soils in Yaakob village, south Sohag Governorate, Egypt. The studied inputs (sources) include P-fertilizers, irrigation water and dustfall, while the main outputs (sinks) are drainage water and harvested plants. The measurements indicate that soil, clover, dustfall and P-fertilizers contain considerable concentration of Cd, Cr, Co, Cu and Pb. The mass balance measurements indicate that the accumulation rate of Cd, Cr and Co in soil was 5.4, 54.6 and 16.3 g ha?1 year?1, respectively. However, depletion trend of Pb and Cu was about 1.4 and 5.2 g ha?1 year?1, respectively. The main source of Cd, Pb, Cr and Co in the study area is P-fertilizers with input flux 14.9, 89.9, 198.6 and 18.5 g ha?1 year?1, while Cu source was dustfall with 19.33 g ha?1 year?1. The index of geoaccumulation calculations indicates different degrees of contamination with Cd, Cr, Co and Cu. On the other hand, the main sink for the studied heavy metals was the Egyptian clover (Trifolium alexandrinum) which can be considered a good bioaccumulator of heavy metals.  相似文献

Annual and long-term quantitative estimations of the vertical fluxes of sedimentary matter in the White Sea are the basis for direct calculations of the gain of chemical components and minerals and diverse pollution of the surface layer of the bottom sediments. The White Sea, one of six Russian Arctic seas, may be considered as a megapolygon for further modern study using the new mechanisms of Arctic sedimentogenesis discovered. This work is directed at elaboration of new technologies of complex study of seas using submarine sedimentation and regular vessel observatories. The first priority task is year-round monitoring along the Northern Sea route.  相似文献

The Nordic countries have produced famous polar explorers and researchers who have generated climate research schools at a variety of locations. The dependence of these countries with respect to the lifelihood of their societies, of their use of lands and seas, the exploitation of marine living and non-living resources have made climate research an eminent topic, and many outstanding discoveries of longand short-term climate change have been made for the first time in Scandinavia. These include early contributions to our understanding of the geological effects of continent-wide glaciations during the ice ages, the complex postglacial history of the Baltic Sea and the varved sediment sequences preserved from lakes with an extraordinary seasonality in their sediment input, as well as the detailed records of temperature, ice texture and impurities and greenhouse gas variations of the last Glacial and of the Holocene preserved in the ice cores from Greenland. Iceland with its volcanic sequences and intercalated sediment layers not only preserved the history of this subaerial segment of the mid-Atlantic Ridge, but also easily datable paleoclimate records. The fate of the Vikings, who settled during the Medieval climate optimum on Iceland and later on Greenland and who lost their habitat on Greenland at the beginning of the Little Ice Age, illustrates vividly the climate-dependent subsistence of the indigenous and non-indigenous Scandinavian populations. Modern Scandinavian climate research institutions also include sophisticated modelling groups.  相似文献

Estuaries are complex sedimentary and ecological systems, where controlling factors are variable largely depending on wave vs. tidal dominance and fluvial processes. Paleoenvironmental reconstruction of their ancient counterparts in the form of coastal valley deposits in the subsurface or outcrop requires a multidisciplinary approach. Microfossils can play an integral part in identifying estuarine subenvironments. Foraminifera can be abundant in modern estuaries and resemble characteristics of brackish ichnofaunal communities in featuring low species diversity, but high abundances of opportunistic species, different feeding strategies and common infaunal species. Whereas sediment distribution is highly controlled by energy regimes, foraminifera seem to respond to salinities and tidal exposure. Whereas individual taxa can widely range bathymetrically, the combination of certain taxa becomes diagnostic for estuarine environments. Fossil marginal marine assemblages are dominated by agglutinated species due to taphonomic loss of the calcareous component that is often dominant in modern estuaries. When comparisons between fossil and modern assemblages are undertaken it is advisable to compare with Recent subsurface or remnant assemblages for a more accurate basis of paleoenvironmental interpretation. More integrated research with detailed taphonomic observations is needed on ancient coastal valley deposits to find the paleoecological requirements of extinct taxa and their link to sedimentary facies and ichnofacies.  相似文献

以黄河流域的降水、实测径流量、天然径流量、净引水量以及上中游流域的水土保持措施面积等资料为基础,运用经验统计分析法,研究了近50年来黄河入海径流通量的变化及其与降水和人类活动的关系。结果表明,不同的径流来源区降水的变化对入海径流通量的影响是不同的。引水所形成的侧支循环强度的急剧增大,使入海径流通量大幅度下降。上中游大规模水土保持生效后,这一地区的天然年径流有所减少,也导致入海径流通量的减少,入海径流通量与历年梯田、造林、种草面积之间具有一定的负相关。以入海径流通量作为因变量,以净引水量、流域年降水量和上中游梯田、林草面积作为自变量,建立了多元回归方程。  相似文献

The conservation status of dambos, a particular type of wetland associated with the headwaters of rivers draining the central plateau area of Zimbabwe, is examined in terms of past and present utilisation and erosion problems. Pre- and post-1950 phases are recognized within both the commercial farming areas and the Communal Lands (or peasant farming areas). The pre-1950 phase on commercial farms was one of exploitation of dambos mainly for winter wheat production, such cultivation contributing towards locally serious erosion. Consequently legislation was passed to restrict disturbance of wetlands, especially for cultivation. The post-1950 phase on commercial farms was one of conservation, with minimal use of dambos for grazing and limited erosion. The pre-1950 phase within the Communal Lands, the former native reserves, was one involving progressive modification of the traditional farming system through, in particular, centralisation. Dambo cultivation, a well-established practice, continued throughout this place, but towards the end of this period there were localised signs of degradation associated, in part, with grazing. The post-1950 phase was one of increased pressure on land with a growing human and livestock population. Thus dambos were required to support more and more cattle throughout the year, whilst efforts to curtail dambo cultivation were not well-recieved by peasant farmers and may have compromised general conservation in the reserves.  相似文献

The results of a recent geological-geophysical survey, conducted off Guinea, are combined with previous data to establish a preliminary stratigraphy and provide a structural sketch of this portion of the West African continental margin. Three sectors are distinguished:
  • A northwestern portion of the margin comprises a wide and deeply submerged plateau — the Guinean Marginal Plateau underlain by a thick sedimentary sequence and facing westward toward the Gambia Abyssal Plain. Scismic stratigraphy and structures show clear analogies to the Jurassic margins of the central Atlantic. Including the presence of a Cretaceous paleoslope covered by Cenozoic deposits.
  • A southern area of the margin comprises a series of aligned (W-E trending), acoustic basement features extending along the slope and bounding the Guinean Plateau to the south. These features, basement ridges and volcanic piles are related to a fracture zone system also documented by magnetic anomalies and gravity data. The bordering deep Sierra Leone abyssal plain, also dissected by E-W-trending oceanic fracture zones, contains a sedimentary cover apparently not older than middle Cretaceous.
  • Between both sectors and between two NW-SE trending scarps lies an intermediate area. The seismic profiles show that here, the margin is dissected by faults creating a series of asymmetric horst and graben features progressively narrowing towards the S-E and covered by untectonized (but partly eroded) Upper Cretaceous to Cenozoic sediments.
  • The overall structure of the Guinean Margin is interpreted as the result of two major events. During a first phase the margin was created at the southern extremity of the central Jurassic Atlantic and developed like other comparable margins. During a s econd phase (beginning in Early Cretaceous times) the margin was progressively submitted to the opening of the equatorial South Atlantic. This process gave rise to the margin of the southern Guinean plateau (locally injected by volcanics) and generated the tectonic features of the intermediate zone. This protion may thus represent a part of the rifted Jurassic margin discordantly dissected by the oblique opening of the south Atlantic in the area. The oceanic crust of the central and south Atlantic were definitively connected only during Late Albian times as indicated by the end of the tectonic activity and the early Upper Cretaceous unconformity.  相似文献

    Estimates of glacial sediment delivery to the oceans have been derived from fluxes of meltwater runoff and iceberg calving, and their sediment loads. The combined total (2900 Tg yr−1) of the suspended sediment load in meltwaters (1400 Tg yr−1) and the sediment delivered by icebergs (1500 Tg yr−1) are within the range of earlier estimates. High-resolution microscopic observations show that suspended sediments from glacial meltwaters, supraglacial, and proglacial sediments, and sediments in basal ice, from Arctic, Alpine, and Antarctic locations all contain iron (oxyhydr)oxide nanoparticles, which are poorly crystalline, typically ∼5 nm in diameter, and which occur as single grains or aggregates that may be isolated or attached to sediment grains. Nanoparticles with these characteristics are potentially bioavailable. A global model comparing the sources and sinks of iron present as (oxyhydr)oxides indicates that sediment delivered by icebergs is a significant source of iron to the open oceans, beyond the continental shelf. Iceberg delivery of sediment containing iron as (oxyhydr)oxides during the Last Glacial Maximum may have been sufficient to fertilise the increase in oceanic productivity required to drawdown atmospheric CO2 to the levels observed in ice cores.  相似文献

    A regional sedimentological and sequence stratigraphic analysis is presented in this paper to provide new insights into the morphological complexity and sedimentary mechanisms of unconformities giving shape to basin margins. Although the development of unconformities entails significant sediment delivery to be considered when analysing ‘source to sink’ systems, as well as large palaeogeographical changes related to basin reconfiguration episodes, the complexity that unconformities can reveal towards basin margins has been scarcely explored. A sedimentological and architectural analysis combining outcrop and subsurface datasets shows five palaeoenvironmental evolutionary stages and four key stratigraphic surfaces in a constrained ca 2 Ma Valanginian interval on the southern margin of the Neuquén back-arc basin (Argentina). A complex-type subaerial unconformity was identified, composed in turn of two subaerial unconformities exhibiting both single and composite motifs, different morphologies and facies shifts representative of large palaeogeographical changes. In the studied stratigraphic interval, two erosional stages occur linked to combinations of exclusively non-marine-driven processes involved in unconformities developing. The two subaerial unconformities differ in nature and distribution, representing a novel case of complex unconformities and stratigraphic architectures in non-marine lowstand wedges. The Valanginian complex subaerial unconformity entails a high diachroneity along strike and depositional dip, implying that the hiatus created in landward settings occurred during relative sea-level fall and rise stages during a period longer than in basinward areas. Disagreeing with classical sequential models, two third-order sequence components of a complex lowstand wedge are preserved in proximal settings. Subsidence-controlled accommodation and interplay between second-order and third-order cycles were combined, increasing the prospects of sediment storage and preservation potential of composite sequences towards landward areas. This work improves current comprehension about complex subaerial unconformities formation and related lowstand architectures in proximal settings, providing criteria to understand and revaluate lowstand wedge geometries, particularly for more complex examples, such as the case reported in this contribution.  相似文献

    A total of 280 brachiopods of Ordovician to Cretaceous age, complemented by published data from belemnites and planktonic foraminifera, are used to reconstruct the evolution of calcium isotope composition of seawater (δ44/40CaSW) over the Phanerozoic. The compiled δ44/40CaSW record shows a general increase from ∼1.3‰ (NIST SRM 915a) at the beginning of the Ordovician to ∼2‰ at present. Superimposed on this trend is a major long-term positive excursion from the Early Carboniferous to Early Permian as well as several short-term, mostly negative, oscillations.A numerical model of the global cycles of calcium, carbon, magnesium and strontium was used to estimate whether the recorded δ44/40CaSW variations can be explained by varying magnitudes of input and output fluxes of calcium to the oceans. The model uses the record of marine 87Sr/86Sr ratios as proxy for seafloor spreading rates, a record of oceanic Mg/Ca ratios to estimate rates of dolomite formation, and reconstructed atmospheric CO2, discharge and erosion rates to estimate continental weathering fluxes.The model results indicate that varying magnitudes of the calcium input and output fluxes cannot explain the observed δ44/40CaSW trends, suggesting that the isotope signatures of these fluxes must also have changed. As a possible mechanism we suggest variable isotope fractionation in the sedimentary output flux controlled by the dominant mineralogy in marine carbonate deposits, i.e. the oscillating ‘calcite-aragonite seas’. The ultimate control of the calcium isotope budget of the Phanerozoic oceans appears to have been tectonic processes, specifically variable rates of oceanic crust production that modulated the hydrothermal calcium flux and the oceanic Mg/Ca ratio, which in turn controlled the dominant mineralogy of marine carbonates, hence the δ44/40CaSW. As to the causes of the short-term oscillations recorded in the secular δ44/40CaSW trend, we tentatively propose that these are related to variable rates of dolomite formation and/or to changing chemical composition of the riverine flux, in particular and ratios, induced by variable proportions of silicate vs. carbonate weathering rates on the continents.  相似文献

    The experimental rate constant of dissolution of oligoclase, 1.7 × 10 ? 2 mol · m?2 · s?1 (Busenberg and Clemency, 1976), is compared with rate constants, 5.2 × 10?15 to 6.8 × 10?13 mol · m?2· s?1, derived from mass-balance measurements of sodium in hydrological catchments. The wide range of the field-based rate constants mainly reflects the uncertainty in the evaluation of the specific wetted surface of rock in aquifer. The most probable order of magnitude of the field rate constant is 10?14 mol · m?2· s?1. The difference between the experimental and field rate constant is only partly caused by lower temperature and lowerPCO2 in the aquifer. The main reason for the discrepancy is the diverse history of the mineral surfaces undergoing reaction.It is suggested that the feldspar surfaces in an aquifer are old, compared to those of feldspars utilized in laboratory experiments. They have fewer defects and are smooth. The fresh surfaces of feldspars studied in the laboratory consist of many kinks and ledges and small-area terraces which dissolve faster.The differences in rate constants derived from field data on several specific catchments indicate that the anthropogenic processes which have operated during this century in Central Europe speed up the rate of dissolution by a factor of three. Modern agricultural practices speed up the rate by a factor of five.  相似文献

    The depositional history of the North Atlantic Ocean is described on the basis of about 120 deep-sea drill sites. Sediment fluxes were quantified by calculating accumulation rates (g·cm–2·my–1) of terrigenous and calcareous biogenic sediment components. They were plotted versus an absolute time scale, into palinspastic maps and into age versus paleodepth diagrams.Dominantly terrigenous deposits fill the deeper parts of the western and eastern subbasins of the North Atlantic Ocean, because of the depth-dependent dissolution of calcium carbonate. Along the continental margins they are mixed with biogenic calcareous and siliceous components. Temporal maxima in the terrigenous sediment input occurred in the Late Jurassic to Early Cretaceous time interval and from Middle Miocene to Recent times.High carbonate fluxes are also found in the Jurassic and Early Cretaceous and in the Neogene. The accumulation rates remained modest over most of the time in between. High fluxes are mainly restricted to the continental margins and to a minor extent to the Mid-Atlantic Ridge. The distribution patterns of calcareous material in the deepsea indicate large-scale sediment displacements.Input rates of terrigenous and biogenic calcareous materials seem to have varied simultaneously for long time intervals suggesting a causal relationship. They indicate a uniform depositional environment until Early Cretaceous. Then the North Atlantic Ocean differentiated into an eastern and western subbasin with their own depositional environments, which varied according to latitude and paleodepth.
    Zusammenfassung Die Ablagerungsgeschichte des Nordatlantischen Ozeans wurde auf der Grundlage von etwa 120 DSDP-Tiefseebohrungen rekonstruiert. Um den Sedimenteintrag zu quantifizieren, wurden Akkumulationsraten (in g·cm–2· my–1) für die terrigenen und biogenen kalkigen Sedimentkomponenten berechnet. Sie wurden gegen eine absolute Zeitskala aufgetragen, in palinspastischen Karten und in Alter/Paläotiefen-Diagrammen dargestellt.Ablagerungen hauptsächlich terrigener Zusammensetzung füllen die tieferen Teile der westlichen und östlichen Teilbecken des Nordatlantiks, da die kalkigen Sedimentkomponenten aufgrund einer CCD oberhalb des Beckenbodens aufgelöst wurden. Entlang der Kontmentalränder sind sie mit biogenen kalkigen und kieseligen Komponenten vermischt. Zeitliche Maxima im Eintrag terrigener Sedimentpartikel treten vom Späten Jura bis zur Frühen Kreide und vom Mittelmiozän bis heute auf.Hohe Karbonatsedimentation fand ebenfalls vom Jura bis zur Frühen Kreide und im Neogen statt. In der dazwischenliegenden Zeit blieben die CaCO3-Akkumulationsraten im allgemeinen gering. Hohe Akkumulationsraten waren vor allem auf die Kontinentalränder und, in geringerem Maße, auf den Mittelatlantischen Rücken beschränkt. Die Verteilungsmuster von Kalziumkarbonat in der Tiefsee weisen auf großräumige Sedimentumlagerungen hin.Akkumulationsraten terrigenen und biogenen kalkigen Materials scheinen sich über lange Zeiträume hinweg gleichzeitig geändert zu haben und deuten auf eine ursächliche Beziehung zwischen den beiden Komponenten hin. Sie belegen ein gleichförmiges Ablagerungsmilieu bis zur Frühen Kreide. Danach differenzierte sich der Nordatlantik in ein östliches und ein westliches Teilbecken, die je nach geographischer Breite und nach Paläotiefenverhältnissen ihr eigenes Ablagerungsmilieu entwickelten.

    Résumé L'histoire sédimentaire de l'Atlantique Nord a été reconstituée à partir de quelque 120 forages en mer profonde. Afin de quantifier l'apport sédimentaire, le taux d'accumulation (en gr·cm–2·ma–1) a été calculé pour les composants terrigénes d'une part et biogéniques calcaires d'autre part. Ces taux ont été reportés en fonction d'une échelle d'âges absolus sur des cartes palynspastiques et dans des diagrammes de paléo-profondeur.Les parties les plus profondes des bassins oriental et occidental de l'Atlantique Nord sont remplies par des dépôts de composition terrigéne dominante, en conséquence de la dissolution des carbonates sous la profondeur de compensation. Le long des marges continentales, les dépôts sont mêlés de composants biogéniques carbonatés et siliceux. Des maxima temporaires dans les apports terrigénes se marquent pendant les intervalles Jurassique supérieur -Crétacé inférieur et Miocène moyen-Récent.Une abondante sédimentation carbonatée s'est produite également du Jurassique au Crétacé inférieur ainsi qu'au Néogéne.Pendant la période intermédiaire, les taux d'accumulation du CaCO3 sont, en général restés faibles, les valeurs élevées restant localisées principalement sur les marges continentales et, dans une moindre mesure, sur la crête médiatlantique. La distribution du matériau calcaire en mer profonde indique des remaniements à grande échelle des sédiments.Les taux d'accumulation des matérieux terrigénes et biogéniques calcaires semblent présenter des variations simultanées au cours de longues périodes, ce qui suggère une cause commune. Ils indiquent un milieu de dépôt uniforme jusqu'au Crétacé inférieur. Ensuite, l'Atlantique Nord s'est différencié en deux bassins — oriental et occidental — possédant chacun ses propres conditions de milieu, variables en fonction de la latitude et de la paléoprofondeur.

    Phosphatized limestones from the Pourtales Terrace, Straits of Florida, have undergone fresh-water diagenesis, as shown by several selective petrologic features such as dissolution of aragonitic skeletal material and preservation and recrystallization of Mg-calcite. This interpretation is supported by the fact that greater than 94% of the uranium in these samples is in the U(VI) oxidation state. On the deeper Pourtales Escarpment, phosphatized limestones show no alteration features indicative of fresh-water diagenesis. The uranium in these samples is a mixture of U(IV) and U(VI) with oxidation-state ratios similar to other sea-floor phosphorites. Our interpretation of these data is that uranium in the terrace samples was oxidized when that area was emergent. The karsted surface of the terrace, therefore, is a result of subaerial exposure of this portion of the Floridan platform. The escarpment samples were never above sea level, and so more closely retain their original uranium oxidation-state ratios.  相似文献
