Carbon has been proposed as a potential light element in planetary cores, included in models of planetary core formation, and found in meteoritic samples and minerals. To better understand the effect of C on the partitioning behavior of elements, solid/liquid partition coefficients (D = (solid metal)/(liquid metal)) were determined for 17 elements (As, Au, Co, Cr, Cu, Ga, Ge, Ir, Ni, Os, Pd, Pt, Re, Ru, Sb, Sn, and W) over a range of C contents in the Fe-Ni-C system at 1 atm. The partition coefficients for the majority of the elements increased as the C content of the liquid increased, an effect analogous to that of S for many of the elements. In contrast, three of the elements, Cr, Re, and W, were found to have anthracophile (C-loving) preferences, partitioning more strongly into the metallic liquid as the C content increased, resulting in decreases to their partition coefficients. For half of the elements examined, the prediction that partitioning in the Fe-Ni-S and Fe-Ni-C systems could be parameterized using a single set of variables was not supported. The effects of S and C on elemental partitioning behavior can be quite different; consequently, the presence of different non-metals can result in different fractionation patterns, and that uniqueness offers the opportunity to gain insight into the evolution of planetary bodies.  相似文献

Element partitioning in metal-light element systems is important to our understanding of planetary differentiation processes. In this study, solid-metal/liquid-sulfide, liquid-metal/liquid-sulfide and solid-metal/troilite partition coefficients (D) were determined for 18 elements (Ag, As, Au, Co, Cr, Cu, Ge, Ir, Ni, Os, Pd, Pt, Mo, Mn, Re, Ru, Se and W) in the graphite-saturated Fe-S-C system at 1 atm. Compared at the same liquid S concentration, the solid/liquid partition coefficients are similar to those in the Fe-S system, but there are systematic differences that appear to be related to interactions with carbon dissolved in the solid metal. Elements previously shown to be “anthracophile” generally have larger solid/liquid partition coefficients in the Fe-S-C system, whereas those that are not have similar or smaller partition coefficients in the Fe-S-C system. The partitioning of trace elements between C-rich and S-rich liquids is, in most cases, broadly similar to the partitioning between solid metal and S-rich liquid. The highly siderophile elements Os, Re, Ir and W are partitioned strongly into the C-rich liquid, with D ? 100. The partition coefficients for Pt, Ge and W decrease significantly at the transition to liquid immiscibility, while the partition coefficient for Mo increases sharply. The bulk siderophile element patterns of ureilite meteorities appear to be better explained by separation of S-rich liquid from residual C-rich metallic liquid at temperatures above the silicate solidus, rather than by separation of S-rich liquid from residual solid metal at lower temperatures.  相似文献

We have investigated the partitioning of Ir. Ge, Ga, W, Cr, Au, P, and Ni between solid metal and metallic liquid as a function of temperature and S-concentration of the metallic liquid. Partition coefficients for siderophile elements such as Ir, W, Ga and Ge increase by factors of 10–100 as the Sconcentration of the metallic liquid increases from 0–30 wt%. Partition coefficients for other siderophile elements such as Ni, Au and P increase by only factors of 2–3. In contrast, partition coefficients for the more chalcophile element Cr decrease. These experimentally-determined partition coefficients have been used in conjunction with a fractional crystallization model to reproduce the geochemical behavior of Ni, P, Au and Ir during the magmatic evolution of groups IIAB, IIIAB, IVA and IVB iron meteorites. The mean S-concentration for each group increases in the order IVB, IVA, IIIAB, IIAB, in accord with cosmochemical prediction. However, we are unable to reproduce the geochemical behavior of Ge, Ga, W and Cr in an internally consistent way. We conclude that the magmatic histories of these iron meteorite groups are more complex than has been generally assumed.  相似文献

The solubility limits of the α (kamacite) and γ (taenite) phases in the Fe-Ni and Fe-Ni-P phase diagrams have been measured at low temperatures, 700-300°C. The predicted αα + γ retrograde solubility below 500°C was demonstrated experimentally for the first time in the Fe-Ni system. The minimum solubility of Ni in γ at the γα boundary increases with decreasing temperature to as much as 54 wt% at 300°C. The addition of P increases the maximum solubility of Ni in α by as much as 1.6 wt% and decreases the minimum solubility of Ni in γ by as much as 7 wt% at 300°C.The solubility limits of kamacite and taenite were also obtained from heat-treated samples of the Grant and Cape York iron meteorites. The data indicate that in iron meteorites minor and trace elements other than P do not significantly shift the Ni solubility limits of the Fe-Ni and Fe-Ni-P phase diagrams. The measured phase diagrams can be used to explain the Agrell effect and the differences in maximum Ni content of taenite among irons and chondrites. The formation of plessite and the influence of the measured solubility limits on the cooling rate simulation method are also considered.  相似文献

Laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS) was used to measure distributions of the siderophile elements V, Fe, Co, Ni, Mo, Ru, Rh, Pd, W, Re, Os, Ir, Pt, and Au in Fremdlinge with a spatial resolution of 15 to 25 μm. A sulfide vein in a refractory inclusion in Allende (CV3-oxidized) is enriched in Rh, Ru, and Os with no detectable Pd, Re, Ir, or Pt, indicating that Rh, Ru, and Os were redistributed by sulfidation of the inclusion, causing fractionation of Re/Os and other siderophile element ratios in Allende CAIs. Fremdlinge in compact Type-A inclusions from Efremovka (CV3-reduced) exhibit subsolidus exsolution into kamacite and taenite and minimal secondary formation of V-magnetite and schreibersite. Siderophile element partitioning between taenite and kamacite is similar to that observed previously in iron meteorites, while preferential incorporation of the light PGEs (Ru, Rh, Pd) relative to Re, Os, Ir, and Pt by schreibersite was observed. Fremdling EM2 (CAI Ef2) has an outer rim of P-free metal that preserves the PGE signature of schreibersite, indicating that EM2 originally had a phosphide rim and lost P to the surrounding inclusion during secondary processing. Most Fremdlinge have chondrite-normalized refractory PGE patterns that are unfractionated, with PGE abundances derived from a small range of condensation temperatures, ∼1480 to 1468 K at Ptot = 10−3 bar. Some Fremdlinge from the same CAI exhibit sloping PGE abundance patterns and Re/Os ratios up to 2 × CI that likely represent mixing of grains that condensed at various temperatures.  相似文献

Sulfur is a potential light element in the liquid outer core of the Earth. Its presence in segregating metal may have had an influence in distribution of metal-loving (siderophile) elements during early accretion and core formation events in the Earth. The observed “excess” abundance of siderophile elements in the terrestrial mantle, relative to an abundance expected from simple core-mantle equilibrium at low temperature and pressure, may indicate a reduction in the iron-loving tendency of siderophile elements in the presence of sulfur in the metallic phase. The present experimental partitioning study between iron-carbon-sulfur-siderophile element bearing liquid metal and liquid silicate shows that for some siderophile elements this sulfur effect may be significant enough to even change their character to lithophile. Large and intricate variations in metal-silicate partition coefficients (Dmet/sil) have been observed for many elements, e.g., Ni, Co, Ge, W, P, Au, and Re as a function of sulfur content. Moderately siderophile elements Ge, P, and W show the most significant response (sulfur-avoidance) by an enhanced segregation into the associated sulfur-deficient phases. Highly siderophile elements Ir, Pt, and Re show a different style of sulfur-avoidance (alloy-preference) by segregating as sulfur-poor, siderophile element-rich alloys. Both groups are chalcophobic. Dmet/sil for Ni, Co, and Au moderately decreases with increasing sulfur-content in the liquid metal. Dmet/sil for chalcophile element, Cr, in contrast, increases with sulfur. Irrespective of the sulfur-content, in the presence of a carbon-saturated liquid metal, P is always lithophile. The general nonmetal-avoidance tendency of siderophile elements (and acceptance of chalcophile elements) in the liquid metal, postulated by Jones and Malvin (1990) in the FeNiS(sulfur)M (siderophile) system is found to be present in the metal-silicate system as well. A sulfur-bearning liquid metal segregation can potentially reduce the metal-loving nature of many elements to explain the excess paradox. Sulfur-bearing core segregation, however, might require an efficient draining of exsolved immiscible sulfide liquids from the molten silicate, or an increasing siderophility of sulfur at high pressure to reduce the mantle sulfur content to the observed (<300 ppm) value. Moreover, the chondritic relative abundance pattern of many moderately or highly siderophile elements in the upper mantle is not explained by the presence of sulfur in the segregating metals. Core formation is more complex and intricate than equilibrium segregation.  相似文献

Laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry was used to measure abundances of P, Cr, Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, Ga, Ge, As, Mo, Ru, Rh, Pd, Sn, Sb, W, Re, Os, Ir, Pt, and Au in metal grains in the Bencubbin-like chondrites Bencubbin, Weatherford, and Gujba to determine the origin of large metal aggregates in bencubbinites. A strong volatility-controlled signature is observed among the metal grains. The refractory siderophiles Ru, Rh, Re, Os, Ir, and Pt are unfractionated from one another, and are present in approximately chondritic relative abundances. The less refractory elements Fe, Co, Ni, Pd, and Au are fractionated from the refractory siderophiles, with a chondritic Ni/Co ratio and a higher than chondritic Pd/Fe ratio. The moderately volatile siderophile elements Ga, Ge, As, Sn, and Sb are depleted in the metal, relative to chondritic abundances, by up to 3 orders of magnitude. The trace siderophile element data are inconsistent with the following proposed origins of Bencubbin-Weatherford-Gujba metal: (1) condensation from the canonical solar nebula, (2) oxidation of an initially chondritic metal composition, and (3) equilibration with a S-rich partial melt. A condensation model for metal-enriched (×107 CI) gas is developed. Formation by condensation or evaporation in such a high-density, metal-enriched gas is consistent with the trace element measurements. The proposed model for generating such a gas is protoplanetary impact involving a metal-rich body.  相似文献

Earth’s core may contain C, and it has been suggested that C in the core could stabilize the formation of a solid inner core composed of Fe3C. We experimentally examined the Fe-C system at a pressure of 5 GPa and determined the Fe-C phase diagram at this pressure. In addition, we measured solid metal/liquid metal partition coefficients for 17 trace elements and examined the partitioning behavior between Fe3C and liquid metal for 14 trace elements. Solid metal/liquid metal partition coefficients are similar to those found in one atmosphere studies, indicating that the effect of pressure to 5 GPa is negligible. All measured Fe3C/liquid metal partition coefficients investigated are less than one, such that all trace elements prefer the C-rich liquid to Fe3C. Fe3C/liquid metal partition coefficients tend to decrease with decreasing atomic radii within a given period. Of particular interest, our 5 GPa Fe-C phase diagram does not show any evidence that the Fe-Fe3C eutectic composition shifts to lower C contents with increasing pressure, which is central to the previous reasoning that the inner core may be composed of Fe3C.  相似文献

Concentrations of Ag, Au, Cd, Co, Re, Zn and Platinum-group elements (PGE) have been determined in sulfide minerals from zoned sulfide droplets of the Noril’sk 1 Medvezky Creek Mine. The aims of the study were; to establish whether these elements are located in the major sulfide minerals (pentlandite, pyrrhotite, chalcopyrite and cubanite), to establish whether the elements show a preference for a particular sulfide mineral and to investigate the model, which suggests that the zonation in the droplets is caused by the crystal fractionation of monosulfide solid solution (mss). Nickel, Cu, Ag, Re, Os, Ir, Ru, Rh and Pd, were found to be largely located in the major sulfide minerals. In contrast, less than 25% of the Au, Cd, Pt and Zn in the rock was found to be present in these sulfides. Osmium, Ir, Ru, Rh and Re were found to be concentrated in pyrrhotite and pentlandite. Palladium and Co was found to be concentrated in pentlandite. Silver, Cd and Zn concentrations are highest in chalcopyrite and cubanite. Gold and platinum showed no preference for any of the major sulfide minerals. The enrichment of Os, Ir, Ru, Rh and Re in pyrrhotite and pentlandite (exsolution products of mss) and the low levels of these elements in the cubanite and chalcopyrite (exsolution products of intermediate solid solution, iss) support the mss crystal fractionation model, because Os, Ir, Ru, Rh and Re are compatible with mss. The enrichment of Ag, Cd and Zn in chalcopyrite and cubanite also supports the mss fractionation model these minerals are derived from the fractionated liquid and these elements are incompatible with mss and thus should be enriched in the fractionated liquid. Gold and Pt do not partition into either iss or mss and become sufficiently enriched in the final fractionated liquid to crystallize among the iss and mss grains as tellurides, bismithides and alloys. During pentlandite exsolution Pd appears to have diffused from the Cu-rich portion of the droplet into pentlandite.  相似文献

A 187Re-187Os isochron including data for all twelve IVB irons gives an age of 4579 ± 34 Ma with an initial 187Os/188Os of 0.09531 ± 0.00022, consistent with early solar system crystallization. This result, along with the chemical systematics of the highly siderophile elements (HSE) are indicative of closed-system behavior for all of the HSE in the IVB system since crystallization.Abundances of HSE measured in different chunks of individual bulk samples, and in spot analyses of different portions of individual chunks, are homogeneous at the ±10% level or better. Modeling of HSE in the IVB system, therefore, is not impacted by sample heterogeneities. Concentrations of some other elements determined by spot analysis, such as P, Cr and Mn, however, vary by as much as two orders of magnitude and reflect the presence of trace phases.Assuming initial S in the range of 0 to 2 wt.%, the abundances of the HSE Re, Os, Ir, Ru, Pt, Rh, Pd and Au in bulk IVB irons are successfully accounted for via a fractional crystallization model. For these elements, all IVB irons can be interpreted as being representative of equilibrium solids, liquids, or mixtures of equilibrium solids and liquids. Our model includes changes in bulk D values (ratio of concentration in the solid to liquid) for each element in response to expected increases in S and P in the evolving liquid. For this system, the relative D values are as follow: Os > Re > Ir > Ru > Pt > Rh > Pd > Au. Osmium, Re, Ir and Ru were compatible elements (favor the solid) throughout the IVB crystallization sequence; Rh, Pd and Au were incompatible (favor the liquid). Extremely limited variation in Pt concentrations throughout the IVB crystallization sequence requires that D(Pt) remained at unity. In general, D values derived from the slopes of logarithmic plots, compared with those calculated from recent parameterizations of D values for metal systems are similar, but not identical. Application of D values obtained by the parameterization method is problematic for comparisons of the compatible elements with similar partitioning characteristics. The slope-based approach works well for these elements. In contrast, the slope-based approach does not provide viable D values for the incompatible elements Pd and Au, whereas the parameterization method appears to work well. Modeling results suggest that initial S for this system may have been closer to 2% than 0, but the elements modeled do not tightly constrain initial S.Consistent with previous studies, our calculated initial concentrations of HSE in the IVB parent body indicate assembly from materials that were fractionated via high temperature condensation processes. As with some previous studies, depletions in redox sensitive elements and corresponding high concentrations of Re, Os and Ir present in all IVB irons are interpreted as meaning that the IVB core formed in an oxidized parent body. The projected initial composition of the IVB system was characterized by sub-chondritic Re/Os and Pt/Os ratios. The cause of this fractionation remains a mystery. Because of the refractory nature of these elements, it is difficult to envision fractionation of these elements (especially Re-Os) resulting from the volatility effects that evidently affected other elements.  相似文献

Hypotheses for the origin of the Moon involve variants on capture, double-planet, and fission processes. Double-planet and fission hypotheses are examined in the light of siderophile trace elements. The siderophile trace elements chosen (W, Re, Mo, P, Ga, Ge) have well understood geochemical behavior such that appropriate metal/silicate partition coefficients are available and their abundances in the lunar and terrestrial mantles 4.4–4.5 × 109 years ago may be reasonably inferred. The fission hypothesis of Ringwood (1979) is not consistent with the behavior of Re, Mo, and P. The hybrid fission hypothesis of Wankeet al. (1983) overcomes many of the deficiencies of ringwood's hypothesis, but is not readily reconcilable with the behavior of Re and Ir. The double-planet hypothesis as most recently advanced by Newsom and Drake (1982, 1983) appears to be consistent with siderophile element behavior in the Moon.  相似文献

For accurate mathematical modeling of trace-element partitioning during igneous fractionation, adsorption should be considered. Because of adsorption, the partitioning of elements between liquid and a surface layer of a crystal is often not the same as the partitioning between liquid and the solid crystal at true equilibrium. In some minerals e.g. high-calcium pyroxene, the effect of adsorption during crystal growth may be very important; this is suggested by the frequent occurrence of sector zoning in augite, and the wide range in measured partition coefficients for such elements as rare earths. The ions which are enriched by adsorption are usually those which are favored substituents according to Goldschmidt's rules. In other minerals, uptake of trace elements may be closer to equilibrium partitioning, rather than being determined by kinetic factors. For example, the relative partitioning of REE, U, Th and Pb into feldspars is qualitatively predicted by Pauling's rules for complex ionic crystals, rather than by Goldschmidt's rules.  相似文献

Osmium isotopic compositions, abundances of highly siderophile elements (HSE: platinum group elements, Re and Au), the chalcogen elements S, Se and Te and major and minor elements were analysed in physically separated size fractions and components of the ordinary chondrites WSG 95300 (H3.3, meteorite find) and Parnallee (LL3.6, meteorite fall). Fine grained magnetic fractions are 268-65 times enriched in HSE compared to the non-magnetic fractions. A significant deviation of some fractions of WSG 95300 from the 4.568 Ga 187Re-187Os isochron was caused by redistribution of Re due to weathering of metal. HSE abundance patterns show that at least four different types of HSE carriers are present in WSG 95300 and Parnallee. The HSE carriers display (i) CI chondritic HSE ratios, (ii) variable Re/Os ratios, (iii) lower than CI chondritic Pd/Ir and Au/Ir and (iv) higher Pt/Ir and Pt/Ru than in CI chondrites. These differences between components clearly indicate the loss of refractory HSE carrier phases before accretion of the components. Tellurium abundances correlate with Pd and are decoupled from S, suggesting that most Te partitioned into metal during the last high-temperature event. Tellurium is depleted in all fractions compared to CI chondrite normalized Se abundances. The depletion of Te is likely associated with the high temperature history of the metal precursors of H and LL chondrites and occurred independent of the metal loss event that depleted LL chondrites in siderophile elements. Most non-magnetic and slightly magnetic fractions have S/Se close to CI chondrites. In contrast, the decoupling of Te and Se from S in magnetic fractions suggests the influence of volatility and metal-silicate partitioning on the abundances of the chalcogen elements. The influence of terrestrial weathering on chalcogen element systematics of these meteorites appears to be negligible.  相似文献

Usually it is assumed that the partitioning of trace elements into titanite in metaluminous granitoid plutonic environments takes place under equilibrium conditions and that compositional zoning is due solely to progressive changes in melt chemistry and/or mineral/melt partition coefficients. Examination of titanites from a variety of Caledonian metaluminous granitoids and related rocks has revealed that sector zoning is present, indicating disequilibrium partitioning. The sector zoning in titanites is defined principally by the distribution of the rare earth elements (REE), Y, Nb, Al and Fe. The REE, Y and Nb preferentially occur within the minor (100) sectors relative to the morphologically important (111) sectors. The reverse is true of Al and Fe which preferentially occur within the (111) sectors relative to the (100) sectors. The patterns of sector zoning are complicated by the fact that the relative growth rates of the various crystal faces fluctuated during growth. Sector zoning indicates that crystal-interface kinetics are responsible for the observed patterns of element partitioning. It is concluded that differences in the lateral-layerspreading rates of crystal faces bring about the sector zoning. The results have implications for the use of trace element partition coefficients in the modelling of fractionation processes.  相似文献

Siderophile element abundances in individual metal grains in the ungrouped chondrite Grosvenor Mountains (GRO) 95551 and in the ordinary chondrites Tieschitz H3.6, Soko-Banja LL4, and Allegan H5 were measured with laser ablation-inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry. Matrix metal in GRO 95551 falls into two distinct compositional groups, a high-Ni group with 7.2 ± 0.4 wt% Ni and a low-Ni group with 3.7 ± 0.1 wt% Ni, indicating that kamacite/taenite equilibration at ∼1020 K was followed by rapid cooling. The nonrefractory siderophile elements P, Co, Cu, Ga, Ge, As, Pd, and Au also partition between the high-Ni and low-Ni metal in a manner consistent with kamacite/taenite fractionation, but the refractory siderophiles Ru, Re, Os, Ir, and Pt show correlated variations that are unrelated to kamacite/taenite partitioning and indicate that variations in refractory components of the metal were not completely erased during equilibration at ∼1020 K. The Ni-normalized bulk metal composition of GRO 95551 is refractory depleted and volatile rich relative to Bencubbin and related metal-rich chondrites but bears strong similarities to equilibrated ordinary chondrite metal. GRO 95551 represents a new chondrite type with chemical affinity to the ordinary chondrites. Individual metal grains in unequlibrated ordinary chondrites also have correlated variations in refractory siderophile contents that cannot be produced by redox processes alone; these variations span three orders of magnitude and diminish with increasing metamorphic grade of the ordinary chondrites.  相似文献

Noble metals, Mo, W, and 24 other elements were determined in six SNC meteorites of presumably Martian origin. Based on element correlations, representative siderophile element concentrations for the silicate mantle of Mars were inferred. From a comparison with experimentally determined metal/silicate partition coefficients of the moderately siderophile elements: Fe, Ni, Co, W, Mo, and Ga, it is concluded that equilibrium between core forming metal and silicates in Mars has occurred at high temperatures (around 2200°C) and low pressures (<1 GPa). This suggests that metal segregation occurred concurrently with rapid accretion of Mars, which is consistent with the inference from excess 182W in Martian meteorites (Lee and Halliday, 1997). Concentrations of Ir, Os, Ru, Pt, and Au in the analyzed Martian meteorites, except ALH84001, are at a level of approximately 10−2–10−3 × CI. The comparatively high abundances of noble metals in Martian meteorites require the addition of chondritic material after core formation. The similarity in Au/La and Pt/Ca ratios between ALH84001 and the other Martian meteorites suggests crystallization of ALH84001 after complete accretion of Mars.  相似文献

Recent experiments in the fields of crystal growth, crystal-melt element partitioning, and diffusion in magmatic melts make it possible to estimate disequilibrium partitioning for many species between liquid and crystals and to compute quantitative models which take into account partition coefficients, diffusivities and rates of crystal growth. A slight difference in the diffusivities of two isotopes should lead to selective depletion (or enrichment) in the crystals as they grow, resulting in varying isotopic ratios as crystallization proceeds. Reasonable hypotheses permit under general kinetic conditions an estimation of magnitude of possible effects. The resulting isotopic fractionation for major elements (like oxygen) may exceed the per ml level; for trace elements the effects may be more significant (5–10 per ml), especially in the case of low partition coefficients, but analytical difficulties are formidable at present.  相似文献

Partition coefficients between olivine and melt at upper mantle conditions, 3 to 14 GPa, have been determined for 27 trace elements (Li, Be, B, Na, Mg, Al, Si, P, K, Ca, Sc, Ti, V, Cr, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, Rb, Sr, Y, Zr, Cs, Ba, La and Ce) using secondary-ion mass-spectrometry (SIMS) and electron-probe microanalysis (EPMA). The general pattern of olivine/melt partitioning on Onuma diagrams resembles those reported previously for natural systems. This agreement strongly supports the argument that partitioning is under structural control of olivine even at high pressure. The partition coefficients for mono- and tri-valent cations show significant pressure dependence, both becoming larger with pressure, and are strongly correlated with coupled substitution into cation sites in the olivine structure. The dominant type of trace element substitution for mono- and tri-valent cations into olivine changes gradually from (Si, Mg)↔(Al, Cr) at low pressure to (Si, Mg)↔(Al, Al) and (Mg, Mg)↔(Na, Al) at high pressure. The change in substitution type results in an increase in partition coefficients of Al and Na with pressure. An inverse correlation between the partition coefficients for divalent cations and pressure has been observed, especially for Ni, Co and Fe. The order of decreasing rate of partition coefficient with pressure correlates to strength of crystal field effect of the cation. The pressure dependence of olivine/melt partitioning can be attributed to the compression of cation polyhedra induced by pressure and the compensation of electrostatic valence by cation substitution. The concentrations of P, V, Cr, Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, Ga, Ge, As, Mo, Ru, Rh, Pd, W, Re, Os, Ir, Pt, and Au in the group IVB iron meteorites Cape of Good Hope, Hoba, Skookum, Santa Clara, Tawallah Valley, Tlacotepec, and Warburton Range have been measured by laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry. The data were fitted to a model of fractional crystallization of the IVB parent body core, from which the composition of the parent melt and metal/melt distribution coefficients for each element in the system were determined, for a chosen value of D(Ni). Relative to Ni and chondritic abundances, the parent melt was enriched in refractory siderophiles, with greatest enrichment of 5× chondritic in the most refractory elements, and was strongly volatile-depleted, down to 0.00014× chondritic in Ge. Comparison to an equilibrium condensation sequence from a gas of solar composition indicates that no single temperature satisfactorily explains the volatility trend in the IVB parent melt; a small (<1%) complement of ultrarefractory components added to metal that is volatile-depleted but otherwise has nearly chondritic abundances (for Fe, Co and Ni) best explains the volatility trend. In addition to this volatility processing, which probably occurred in a nebular setting, there was substantial oxidation of the metal in the IVB parent body, leading to loss of Fe and other moderately siderophile elements such as Cr, Ga, and W, and producing the high Ni contents that are observed in the IVB irons. By assuming that the entire IVB parent body underwent a similar chemical history as its core, the composition of the silicate that is complementary to the IVB parent melt was also estimated, and appears to be similar to that of the angrite parent.  相似文献
