Many of the faults within the Lake Moondarra area cropout as wide zones which are filled with massive or fibrous milky quartz. Additionally, a variety of rock fragments from the surrounding metasediments are present in the fault zones. The second regional slaty cleavage, S2, is locally observed through the quartz and country rock fragments within some of the zones, indicating that these fault fills originated pre- or early syn-S2. The absence of the first regional slaty cleavage, S1, suggests that the fault fills developed post or late syn-S1. Evidence supporting an early syn-S2 timing for the development of these fills is provided by the results of oxygen isotope analysis carried out on quartz specimens collected from the faults and also by the nature of the quartz. Specimens of quartz taken from the various fault zones have δ18O values between 12.4 and 14.5‰. This suggests that metamorphic water isotopically equilibrated with connate formation water was the aqueous fluid which transported the silica. δ18O values for the silica in the quartz-rich, sometimes dolomitic, metasediments of the Mount Isa and Haslingden Groups within the Lake Moondarra area are similar to the quartz within the fault fills. The lack of any metamorphic event between the first and second deformation, together with the sometimes fibrous nature of the fault-filling material with fibres parallel to the mineral elongation in S2 (i.e. L22), suggests that the quartz in the faults was derived syntectonically at grain to grain contacts in the metasediments within the Lake Moondarra area, early in the development of S2. The quartz is believed to have moved by the process of solution transfer to the faults as they underwent dilation during D2. Subsequently the quartz was precipitated as a result of a chemical potential gradient.  相似文献

Dinosaur skin impressions are rare in the Upper Jurassic Morrison Formation, but different sites on the Howe Ranch in Wyoming (USA), comprising specimens from diplodocid, camarasaurid, allosaurid and stegosaurian dinosaurs, have proven to be a treasure-trove for these soft-tissue remains. Here we describe stegosaurian skin impressions from North America for the first time, as well as the first case of preservation of an impression of the integument that covered the dorsal plates of stegosaurian dinosaurs in life. Both have been found closely associated with bones of a specimen of the stegosaurian Hesperosaurus mjosi Carpenter, Miles and Cloward 2001. The scales of the skin impression of H. mjosi are very similar in shape and arrangement to those of Gigantspinosaurus sichuanensis Ouyang 1992, the only other stegosaurian dinosaur from which skin impressions have been described. Both taxa show a ground pattern of small polygonal scales, which in some places is interrupted by larger oval tubercles surrounded by the small scales, resulting in rosette-like structures. The respective phylogenetic positions of G. sichuanensis as a basal stegosaurian and H. mjosi as a derived form suggest that most stegosaurians had very similar skin structures, which also match the most common textures known in dinosaurs. The integumentary impression from the dorsal plate brings new data to the long-lasting debate concerning the function of dorsal plates in stegosaurian dinosaurs. Unlike usual dinosaur skin impressions, the integument covering the dorsal plates does not show any scale-like texture. It is smooth with long and parallel, shallow grooves, a structure that is interpreted as representing a keratinous covering of the plates. The presence of such a keratinous covering has affects on all the existing theories concerning the function of stegosaurian plates, including defense, thermoregulation, and display, but does not permit to rule out any of them.  相似文献

Secondary soft-bottom dwellers evolved several times in the Arcoida. These include semi-infaunal endobyssate taxa and free-burrowing species. The Jurassic arcoid bivalve Grammatodon inaequivalvis (Goldfuss, 1837) is remarkable for showing different sculptures on its left and right valve. A functional analysis of the shell points to a reclining mode of life on soft bottoms. This interpretation is corroborated by the occurrence of this species in very fine-grained sediments, and by taphonomic patterns such as “butterflied” preservation. It is proposed here that this species was resting on its left valve on the sediment, probably without byssal attachment. This reclining mode of life of G. inaequivalvis was hitherto undescribed from soft-bottom dweller arcoid bivalves.  相似文献

The standard thermodynamic properties at 25°C, 1 bar (ΔG fo, ΔH fo, S o, C Po, V o, ω) and the coefficients of the revised Helgeson–Kirkham–Flowers equations of state were evaluated for several aqueous complexes formed by dissolved metals and either arsenate or arsenite ions. The guidelines of Shock and Helgeson (Geochim Cosmochim Acta 52:2009–2036, 1988) and Sverjensky et al. (Geochim Cosmochim Acta 61:1359–1412, 1997) were followed and corroborated with alternative approaches, whenever possible. The SUPCRT92 computer code was used to generate the log K of the destruction reactions of these metal–arsenate and metal–arsenite aqueous complexes at pressures and temperatures required by the EQ3/6 software package, version 7.2b. Apart from the AlAsO4o and FeAsO4o complexes, our log K at 25°C, 1 bar are in fair agreement with those of Whiting (MS Thesis, Colorado School of Mines, Golden, CO, 1992). Moreover, the equilibrium constants evaluated in this study are in good to fair agreement with those determined experimentally for the Ca–dihydroarsenate and Ca–hydroarsenate complexes at 40°C (Mironov et al., Russ J Inorg Chem 40:1690, 1995) and for Fe(III)–hydroarsenate complex at 25°C (Raposo et al., J Sol Chem 35:79–94, 2006), whereas the disagreement with the log K measured for the Ca–arsenate complex at 40°C (Mironov et al., Russ J Inorg Chem 40:1690, 1995) might be due to uncertainties in this measured value. The implications of aqueous complexing between dissolved metals and arsenate/arsenite ions were investigated for seawater, high-temperature geothermal liquids and acid mine drainage and aqueous solutions deriving from mixing of acid mine waters and surface waters. Pachycephalosaurs, a group of ornithischian dinosaurs with distinctive cranial ornamentation and skull domes, underwent dramatic changes in cranial morphology during ontogeny. This has caused debate about whether some specimens belong to juveniles or adults, which impacts studies of pachycephalosaur phylogeny and evolution. One such debate concerns a small skull roof specimen from the Campanian (Upper Cretaceous) of New Mexico, NMMNH P-33898, which was originally described as an indeterminate juvenile but later regarded as a mature adult and erected as the holotype of a new small-bodied species, Stegoceras novomexicanum. We restudied NMMNH P-33898 using computed tomography scanning, morphometric and phylogenetic analyses, and comparisons to growth series of other pachycephalosaurs (Stegoceras validum, Pachycephalosaurus wyomingensis). We conclude that two purported paratype specimens of Stegoceras novomexicanum cannot be referred to the same taxon as the holotype, that the holotype and controversial paratypes all belong to immature specimens and not aberrant small-bodied adults, but that current evidence cannot clearly determine whether NMMNH P-33898 is a juvenile belonging to its own diagnostic species (S. novomexicanum) or is a juvenile of Stegoceras validum, Sphaerotholus goodwini, or another known taxon. We review the pachycephalosaur record of New Mexico and demonstrate that pachycephalosaurs were important components of dinosaur faunas in the southern part of Western North America during the ∼15 million years before the end-Cretaceous extinction, just as they were in roughly contemporaneous northern localities.  相似文献

In this paper, white Portland cement was used as an experimental material. Prismatic specimens with pre-existing flaws at different angles of inclination (α) varying through 0°, 30°, 45°, 60°, 75° to 90° and cylindrical specimens with different numbers of pre-existing flaws (n) varying through 0, 1, 2 to 3 were tested under uni-axial compression tests. Crack initiation, propagation, coalescence, and failure were observed. The corresponding analytical expression for the stress intensity factor under uni-axial compression was derived, the coefficient of friction and the stress intensity factor of the specimens on the surfaces of the crack were analysed, and the corrective coefficient for the stress intensity factor was introduced. Fatigue tests with a loading frequency of f = 100 Hz were carried out on cylindrical specimens with constant amplitude of the cyclic load which is a proportion of the compressive load at failure (F f) obtained from the uni-axial compression tests. The fatigue property of the specimens was analysed and the relationship (S max − lg N f) between the maximum stress and the number of loading cycles at failure for specimens with pre-existing flaws was proposed. The effect of pre-existing flaws on the fatigue life (N f) and dynamic load (S D) which can be applied was investigated.  相似文献

Recent success in fitting the shrinking object model for dissolution kinetics to biogenic silica, silica gel, simple salts, sucrose and gypsum prompted this study of the effects of common ions upon gypsum dissolution kinetics. Middle-ground dissolutions were mainly studied, in which shrinkage of the surface area, S, is significant, and the system approaches, but does not reach, saturation, c sat. Dissolution was monitored by conductimetry. At a constant ionic strength of 0.060 M, the net rate for gypsum dissolution is given by \textNet \textRate = k\textb ·S ·(c\textsat - c ) {\text{Net}}\,{\text{Rate}} = k_{\text{b}} \cdot S \cdot (c_{\text{sat}} - c ) , where k b is a rate constant, and c can be expressed alternatively in terms of either [Ca2+], [SO4 2−] and [ε±], that part of the electrolyte concentration contributed by gypsum dissolution, or as the equivalent total concentrations of these species, for example, [SO4 2−]T. The presence of either calcium or sulphate as a common ion slows dissolution, and the effect of this upon c sat, k b and k f, the forward rate constant, is discussed. Contrary to previous experience, it is emphasised that each fitting of the shrinking object model demands its own value of the Solubility of gypsum, c sat, which can be derived from the Solubility Product. This experience with gypsum is aligned with previous work on calcite, to develop a unified approach to the batch dissolution of salts. It highlights serious deficiencies in the way earlier common-ion experiments were conceived and enacted, and in particular with the rate equation of Sj?berg (Geochim Cosmochim Acta 40:441–447, 1976) for calcite above a pH of 7. Common-ion experiments are shown to be crucially important for probing the back reaction to dissolutions and might be applied to the far bigger problem of silicate-mineral dissolution, where ‘non-linear kinetics’ are often observed.  相似文献

A computer aided design analysis using high-resolution laser scans of the bones of the stegosaur Kentrosaurus aethiopicus Hennig 1915 from the Late Jurassic Tendaguru Formation indicates that in the habitual walking pose the forelimbs were probably held erect, and that strong humeral flexion and abduction mainly occurred in a defensive stance. Rapid gaits with unsupported phases could not be used. The neck allowed sufficient lateral flexion to guarantee good sight in all directions including posteriorly. The tail covered an arch of roughly 180° and had sufficient range to be used as a weapon. Possibly, the animal could accomplish tail blows against specific targets in sight. Also, a tripodal pose is suggested to have been possible, roughly doubling the maximum vertical feeding height of Kentrosaurus.  相似文献

A critical review of earlier references to Precambrian fossils in South Australia shows that Radiolaria could be present but that other animal remains listed or described by earlier authors have been wrongly interpreted. There is no evidence for the presence of Arthropods in this material.The fauna described bySprigg from the early Cambrian sandstone and quartzite of Ediacara consists not only of Medusae. Recent studies have shown that it includes specimens resembling the types ofPteridinium andRangea from the Nama Series of Southwest Africa. They are now considered as related to living Pennatulacea. In addition, there are present the annelidSpriggina, possibly Siphonophora, and at least two entirely new forms of invertebrates.This assemblage is followed by a sequence of undoubted Lower Cambrian faunas from the lowest Archaeocyatha horizon up to theProtolenus-Zone. The Ediacara fauna which consists only of soft-bodied animals is entirely unlike any known Cambrian fauna. This fact supports the view that it is Precambrian.  相似文献

The Rock-Eval pyrolysis and TOC analysis have been widely used to evaluate the source rock quality. The atomic H/C ratio of kerogen, however, has been overlooked in source rock evaluation. In this study, coal and carbonaceous samples, including 26 from northwestern Taiwan, 12 from China, and 4 from the United States were analyzed, and integrated with 157 published data, to explore the significance of atomic H/C ratio as a parameter of source rock evaluation. Two different linear trends were observed in the cross-plot of S 1 versus S 2. Field outcropped shale or C-shale exhibits a steeper slope compared to that of coal samples which can be attributed to the compositional difference in their organic material. A rather strong positive correlation for H% versus S 2 illustrates the contribution of H-containing macerals, especially exinite. Organic matters in the samples studied are of type II/III kerogen based on the relationship between HI and T max. The H/C ratio, as well as the HI, S 1, and S 2, generally decreases with the maturity increasing. The H/C ratio decreases slightly from 1.1 to 0.7 with the maturity increasing from R o 0.55 to 0.85%. Samples with H/C ratio in this range show significant change in certain other geochemical parameters (e.g. HI, S 1, S 2, S 1 + S 2, S 1/(S 1 + S 2), S 1/TOC, (S 1 + S 2)/TOC, T max). The (S 1 + S 2)/TOC ratio (defined as QI) was used as an indicator of the hydrocarbon potential. The QI, HI, and H/C ratio show a certain correlation, all increasing accordingly. The QI of the samples analyzed in this study is approximately 100–380 (mgHC/gTOC), similar to that of most humic coals for oil and gas generation. Samples with R o value lower than 0.55% always show significant variation in their HI, ranging from 80 to 520 mgHC/gTOC. It is inferred that hydrocarbon potential started from R o 0.55% and atomic H/C ratio 1.1 in this study.  相似文献

Fossilised hind limb bones from the late Middle Miocene (approximately 14 million-year-old [MYA]) Fort Ternan, Kadianga West and Ngorora localities in Western Kenya indicate the presence of a new representative of the ostrich genus Struthio. These new fossils represent some of the oldest known records for Struthio yet described, slightly younger than Struthio coppensi, from the Lower Miocene of Namibia. Because the four sub-species of the modern-day ostrich (Struthio camelus camelus, Struthio camelus australis, Struthio camelus massaicus, and Struthio camelus molybdophanes) inhabit the plains of Africa, and as recently as the 1940s, a fifth sub-species was also present in the Middle East and Saudi Arabia (Struthio camelus syriacus), records of Struthio from Kenya and Namibia testify to the much wider distribution of these cursorial birds in the relatively recent past. This is further supported by the very high frequency of ostrich eggshell fragments found across Africa and Eurasia, which vastly outweighs the amount of skeletal material uncovered over the last century.  相似文献

A new species of cladid(?) crinoid, Segmentocolumnus (col.) clarksoni, based on distinctive, disarticulated stem material, is described from the Upper Llandovery Kilbride Formation. Hitherto, this unit has yielded two taxa based on single, nearly complete crinoids. In contrast, S. (col.) clarksoni is known from numerous specimens, including common long pentagonal, pentameric, heteromorphic pluricolumnals with symplectial articulations, broad pentagonal lumina and narrow claustra. A related morphospecies is known from the Ashgill (Upper Ordovician) of Ireland. The fossil echinoderms of the Llandovery (Lower Silurian) are poorly known globally. Where present in this interval, echinoderms are more commonly preserved as disarticulated ossicles and rarely as complete specimens. Complete crinoids have now been identified from nine horizons in the Llandovery of the British Isles, making this one of the better known pelmatozoan faunas from this time interval. However, only two of these occurrences have yielded as many as five or more identifiable taxa. Seven of the nine occurrences are Upper Llandovery (Telychian). Genera are typical of the Silurian or (Upper Ordovician + Silurian); the only remnant Ashgill taxon that did not survive the Llandovery was the morphogenus Segmentocolumnus (col.) Recent excavations in the Middle Triassic Prosanto Formation (Ladinian, Ct. Grisons, Switzerland) have produced new material of the genus Besania Brough 1939. These specimens show many previously unrecorded details. Some features differ from those of the type species Besania micrognathus, and we therefore erect a new species, Besania schaufelbergeri sp. nov. This new material has prompted a re-evaluation of the phylogenetic interrelationships of the genus. The taxon seems to be closely related to basal Halecostomi. A basanite–nephelinite glass suite from early submarine Kilauea defines a continuous compositional array marked by increasing concentrations of incompatible components with decreasing SiO2, MgO, and Al2O3. Like peripheral and post-shield strongly alkalic Hawaiian localities (Clague et al. in J Volcanol Geotherm Res 151:279–307, 2006; Dixon et al. in J Pet 38:911–939, 1997), the early Kilauea basanite–nephelinite glasses are interpreted as olivine fractionation products from primary magnesian alkalic liquids. For early Kilauea, these were saturated with a garnet–phlogopite–sulfide peridotite assemblage, with elevated dissolved CO2 contents responsible for the liquids’ distinctly low-SiO2 concentrations. Reconstructed primitive liquids for early Kilauea and other Hawaiian strongly alkalic localities are similar to experimental 3 GPa low-degree melts of moderately carbonated garnet lherzolite, and estimated parent magma temperatures of 1,350–1,400°C (olivine–liquid geothermometry) match the ambient upper mantle geotherm shortly beneath the base of the lithosphere. The ~3 GPa source regions were too hot for stable crystalline carbonate and may have consisted of ambient upper mantle peridotite containing interstitial carbonate–silicate or carbonatitic liquid, possibly (Dixon et al. in Geochem Geophys Geosyst 9(9):Q09005, 2008), although not necessarily, from the Hawaiian mantle plume. Carbonate-enriched domains were particularly susceptible to further melting upon modest decompression during upward lithospheric flexure beneath the advancing Hawaiian Arch, or by conductive heating or upward drag by the Hawaiian mantle plume. The early Kilauea basanite–nephelinite suite has a HIMU-influenced isotopic character unlike other Hawaiian magmas (Shimizu et al. in EOS Tran Amer Geophys Union 82(47): abstr V12B-0962, 2001; Shimizu et al. in Geochim Cosmochim Acta 66(15A):710, 2002) but consistent with oceanic carbonatite involvement (Hoernle et al. in Contrib Mineral Petrol 142:520–542, 2002). It may represent the melting products of a fertile domain in the ambient upper mantle impinged upon and perturbed by the sustained plume source that feeds later shield-stage magmatism.  相似文献

This work deals with the study of the ammonoid record of a classical stratigraphic section of Aptian age, the Francisco Zarco Dam (Durango State, northeast Mexico). A detailed biostratigraphical analysis considered 1281 specimens systematically sampled on a bed-by-bed basis. Taphonomy, taxonomic composition and paleocology of the studied assemblage, were also stressed. We formally propose an ammonite zonation for this section, which consists of two interval zones, Dufrenoyia justinae and Gargasiceras? adkinsi, one taxon range zone Caseyella aguilerae, and one biohorizon Huastecoceras trispinosoides. Among those biostratigraphic units, three are of new definition. Another topic discussed herein concerns to the problematic definition of the Lower-Upper Aptian boundary using the first stratigraphical appearance of the genus Epicheloniceras. From a paleoecological point of view, we recognized the ammonoid assemblage of the Francisco Zarco Dam section, to be representative of a distal platform environment. Finally, we compared the zonation built for this section with that considered the standard zonation for the Tethyan Domain, concluding that the differences are so substantial that an independent zonation for the Central Atlantic is necessary.  相似文献

An incomplete skull of the leptonectid ichthyosaur Eurhinosaurus longirostris found in the Rietheim Member (previously “Posidonienschiefer”; Toarcian, Early Jurassic) of Staffelegg, Canton Aargau, is the first record from Switzerland of this taxon and supports the status of Eurhinosaurus longirostris as a palaeobiogeographic very widespread ichthyosaur species in the Early Toarcian of Western Europe. Being from either the Bifrons or Variabilis zone, it is one of the youngest records of Eurhinosaurus and one of the few diagnostic ichthyosaur finds from this time interval. The partial skull is well articulated and preserved three-dimensionally in a carbonate concretion. Both the mode of preservation of the ichthyosaur and an associated ammonoid (Catacoeloceras raquinianum) provided the age of the concretion, which had been collected from scree. Taphocoenosis and taphonomy show the C. raquinianum to be one of few non re-worked fossils recorded from the Early to Late Toarcian boundary (Bifrons/Variabilis zone) of northern Switzerland in general and of this ammonite species in particular. The Toarcian section at Staffelegg differs from other localities where strata of the same age are exposed with respect to facies variations of the Rietheim Member (previously “Posidonienschiefer”, Early Toarcian) and the extraordinarily high thickness of the Gross Wolf Member (previously “Jurensis-Mergel”, Late Toarcian).  相似文献

Grain growth rates in partially molten olivine aggregates were determined experimentally at a pressure of 1 GPa. The aim of the experiments with fine-grained starting material (solution–gelation derived Fo90 olivine with a grain size of ∼1 μm with 2 and 4 wt.% added basaltic glass) was to determine growth rates during steady-state grain growth. A series of experiments was conducted at a fixed temperature of 1,350°C for durations from 2 to 700 h, and a second series at fixed duration (168 h) at temperatures from 1,250 to 1,450°C. The resulting activation energy (E=390 kJ/mol) and growth exponent (n=4.3) are comparable to melt-free results (Nichols and Mackwell 1991). The observed grain size distributions are broader than those predicted for normal grain growth or Ostwald ripening and most similar to the Log-normal distribution. The observed melt distribution is influenced by the continuous rearrangement of neighboring grains during growth. The relatively large growth exponent observed in this study and by Nichols and Mackwell (1991) where secondary phases are present suggests that grain growth in the upper mantle is slower than predicted by Karato (1989).  相似文献

A refined thermodynamic model of H2O and CO2 bearing cordierite based on recent data on volatile incorporation into cordierite (Thompson et al. in Contrib Mineral Petrol 142:107–118, 2001; Harley and Carrington in J Petrol 42:1595–1620, 2001) reflects non-ideality of channel H2O and CO2 mixing. The dependence of cordierite H2O and CO2 contents on P, T and equilibrium fluid composition has been calculated for the range 600–800°C and 200–800 MPa. It has been used for establishing thermodynamic conditions of cordierite formation and the following retrograde PT paths of cordierite rocks from many localities. Estimates of the H2O and CO2 activities have shown that cordierites in granites, pegmatites and high-pressure granulites were formed in fluid-saturated conditions and wide range of H2O/CO2 relations. Very low cordierite H2O contents in many migmatites may be caused not only by fluid-undersaturated conditions at rock formation and H2O leakage on retrograde PT paths but also by the presence of additional volatile components like CH4 and N2. The pressure dependence of cordierite-bearing mineral equilibria on fluid H2O/CO2 relations has been evaluated.  相似文献

Elastic wave velocities for dense (99.8% of theoretical density) isotropic polycrystalline specimens of synthetic pyrope (Mg3Al2Si3O12) were measured to 1,000 K at 300 MPa by the phase comparison method of ultrasonic interferometry in an internally heated gas-medium apparatus. The temperature derivatives of the elastic moduli [(∂Ks/∂T) P = −19.3(4); (∂G/∂T) P = −10.4(2) MPa K−1] measured in this study are consistent with previous acoustic measurements on both synthetic polycrystalline pyrope in a DIA-type cubic anvil apparatus (Gwanmesia et al. in Phys Earth Planet Inter 155:179–190, 2006) and on a natural single crystal by the rectangular parallelepiped resonance (RPR; Suzuki and Anderson in J Phys Earth 31:125–138, 1983) method but |(∂Ks/∂T) P | is significantly larger than from a Brillouin spectroscopy study of single-crystal pyrope (Sinogeikin and Bass in Phys Earth Planet Inter 203:549–555, 2002). Alternative approaches to the retrieval of mixed derivatives of the elastic moduli from joint analysis of data from this study and from the solid-medium data of Gwanmesia et al. in Phys Earth Planet Inter 155:179–190 (2006) yield ∂2 G/∂PT = [0.07(12), 0.20(14)] × 10−3 K−1 and ∂2 K S /∂PT = [−0.20(24), 0.22(26)] × 10−3 K−1, both of order 10−4 K−1 and not significantly different from zero. More robust inference of the mixed derivatives will require solid-medium acoustic measurements of precision significantly better than 1%.  相似文献
