Energetic particle response in electromagnetic fields of ULF HM-waves in the magnetosphere is reviewed. Pc4–5 geomagnetic pulsations observed at the synchronous altitude are classified into three types, in respect to their major magnetic field polarization in different directions, local time dependence, and different characteristics of accompanied flux modulations of energetic particles, i.e., two nearly transverse waves with the azimuthal and the radial polarization, and the compressional stormtime pulsations. Firstly, we formulate the drift kinetic theory of particle flux modulations under the constraint of the magnetic moment conservation. A generalized energy integral of the particle motion interacting with a ULF-wave with the three-dimensional structure propagating to the azimuthal direction is obtained in the L-shell coordinate of a mirror magnetic field. Its linearized form is reduced to the same form as the previously derived energy change, including the bounce-drift resonant interaction. It is shown that the perturbed guiding center distribution function of energetic particles consists of four contributions, the adiabatic mirror effect corresponding to pitch-angle change, the kinetic effects due to energy change and the accompanying L-shell displacement, and the bounceaveraged drift phase bunching. Secondly, the basic HM-wave modes constitutingcoupling ULF oscillations in non-uniform plasmas are discussed in different models of approach for different plasma states. The diamagnetic drift Alfvén wave and the compressional drift wave with a larger azimuthal mode number in a high-beta plasma are candidates for the stormtimes pulsations. The former is intrinsically a guided localized mode, while the latter is a non-localized mode. By making use of the above preparation, we apply the developed drift kinetic theory to interpret the phase relationships between the ion flux modulation and the geomagnetic pulsation in some selected examples of observations, demonstrating a fair agreement in theoretical results with the observations.  相似文献

We consider a pressureless plasma in a thin magnetic-flux tube with a twisted magnetic field. We study the effect of twisted magnetic field on the nature of propagating kink waves. To do this, the restoring forces of oscillations in the linear ideal magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) were obtained. In the presence of a twisted magnetic field, the ratio of the magnetic-tension force to the gradient of the magnetic pressure increases for the mode with negative azimuthal wave number, but it decreases for the mode with positive azimuthal wave number. For the kink mode with positive azimuthal mode number, the ratio of the forces is more affected by the twisted magnetic field in dense loops. For the kink mode with negative azimuthal mode number, the perturbed magnetic pressure is negligible under some conditions. The magnetic twist increases (diminishes) the damping of the kink waves with positive (negative) azimuthal mode number due to resonant absorption. Our conclusion is that introducing a twisted magnetic field breaks the symmetry between the nature of the kink waves with positive and negative azimuthal wave number, and the wave can be a purely Alfvénic wave in the entire loop.  相似文献

We describe the observation of a magnetic pulsation with a period of 55 s, recorded at geostationary orbit by three satellites (ATS 6, SMS 1 and SMS 2) in the local time sector 2100–2400. We use magnetic data from all three spacecraft and also plasma data from ATS 6. The pulsation had a large compressional magnetic component which appeared to be balanced by pressure fluctuations in the hot ring current plasma which were in antiphase with the magnetic variations. This allows the wave to be guided along a field line. From the plasma data we are also able to obtain estimates of the field line displacement and hence the electric field, which enables us to conclude that this is a second harmonic field line resonance. We find that the wave has a very short East-West (E-W) wavelength (m?100) and a westward azimuthal group velocity of about 30 km s?1. The most probable source for this wave is a bounce resonant interaction with ring current protons. The characteristics of this wave are in many ways similar to those of giant pulsations observed on the ground. ATS 6 was near the inner edge of the ring current electrons and as the wave converted the 10 keV electron Alfvén layer back and forth across ATS 6, we were able to estimate the Alfvén layer energy gradient and obtain a value of 1 keV in 1000 km. This gradient is considerably steeper than that predicted by a steady uniform convection electric field.  相似文献

It is assumed that the original impulse producing Pi-2 pulsations is generated in the ionosphere at the moment of a brightening of aurora. The electric field is known to decrease in the auroral arc almost by an order of magnitude. The electric impulse that appears will be transferred along magnetic field lines and reflected from the ionosphere of the opposite hemisphere, forming the standing Alfvén wave. The electric field impulse of 100 mVm is capable of causing magnetic field oscillations of order of 100 γ. Reflection of the Alfvén impulse from the ionosphere with horizontal inhomogeneities corresponding to different forms of auroras is studied. The following is found: (a) the resonance is possible only for harmonics with the rotating vector of polarization; (b) the resonance periods appear to depend essentially on the ionospheric conductivity; this may bring a significant error into determination of the magnetospheric plasma density from the pulsation periods; (c) the auroral zone exerts a screening influence on the pulsations excited at latitudes higher than the zone itself.  相似文献

The reflection and refraction of MHD waves through an “open” magnetopause (rotational discontinuity) is studied. It is found that most of the incident wave energy can be transmitted through the open magnetopause. A transverse Alfvén wave (or a compressional magnetosonic wave) from the solar wind incident upon the open magnetopause would generally lead to the generation of both the transverse Alfvén and compressional magnetosonic waves in the magnetosphere. Transmission of Alfvén waves in the coplanar rotational discontinuity is studied in detail. The integral power of the Alfvén-wave transfer is found to be proportional to the open magnetic flux of the magnetosphere and is typically ~ 1% of the power of the total electromagnetic energy transfer through the open magnetopause. The transmitted wave power may contribute significantly to the geomagnetic pulsations observed on the ground, especially in the open-field-line region.  相似文献

Radially pulsating stars are shown to radiate fast and slow magnetoacoustic waves into the interstellar gas. No Alfvén waves are excited, because the oscillations are radially symmetric. Calculations were performed for the following two limiting cases: hot, weakly magnetized interstellar plasma and cold plasma with a strong magnetic field. In these limiting cases, pulsating stars excite mostly fast magnetoacoustic waves, while the excitation of slow magnetoacoustic waves is weak. Magnetogasdynamic fields of density, velocity, and magnetic-field perturbations in the interstellar medium were found. Relations were derived to calculate the radiated power and its estimates are given for various conditions in the medium. It is shown that radially stratified wave structures with wavelengths from 1 AU to several tenths of a parsec must exist in the vicinity of pulsating stars.  相似文献

We numerically investigate Alfvén waves propagating along an axisymmetric and non-isothermal solar flux tube embedded in the solar atmosphere. The tube magnetic field is current-free and diverges with height, and the waves are excited by a periodic driver along the tube magnetic field lines. The main results are that the two wave variables, the velocity and magnetic field perturbations in the azimuthal direction, behave differently as a result of gradients of the physical parameters along the tube. To explain these differences in the wave behavior, the time evolution of the wave variables and the resulting cutoff period for each wave variable are calculated and used to determine regions in the solar chromosphere where strong wave reflection may occur.  相似文献

Applying an Alfvén-Wave-Extended-QRH-approximation and the method of characteristics, we solve the equations of motion for outwardly propagating Alfvén waves analytically for three different cases of an azimuthal dependence of the background solar wind, (a) for a pure fast-slow stream configuration, (b) for the situation where the high-speed stream originates from a diverging magnetic field region, and (c) for the case of (b) and an initially decreasing density configuration (‘coronal hole’). The reaction of these waves on the background state as well as mode-mode coupling effects are neglected. These three solar wind models are discussed shortly. For the superimposed Alfvén waves we find, on an average, that there is a strong azimuthal dependence of all relevant wave parameters which, correlated with the azimuthal distributions of the solar wind variables, leads to good agreements with observations. The signature of high-speed streams and these correlations could clearly indicate solar wind streams originating from ‘coronal holes’. Contrary to the purely radial dependent solar wind, where outwardly propagating Alfvén waves are exclusively refracted towards the radial direction, we now find a refraction nearly perpendicular to the direction of the interplanetary magnetic field in the compression region and closely towards the magnetic field direction down the trailing edge and in the low-speed regime.  相似文献

We study a nonlinear mechanism for the excitation of kinetic Alfvén waves (KAWs) by fast magneto-acoustic waves (FWs) in the solar atmosphere. Our focus is on the excitation of KAWs that have very small wavelengths in the direction perpendicular to the background magnetic field. Because of their small perpendicular length scales, these waves are very efficient in the energy exchange with plasmas and other waves. We show that the nonlinear coupling of the energy of the finite-amplitude FWs to the small-scale KAWs can be much faster than other dissipation mechanisms for fast wave, such as electron viscous damping, Landau damping, and modulational instability. The nonlinear damping of the FWs due to decay FW = KAW + KAW places a limit on the amplitude of the magnetic field in the fast waves in the solar corona and solar-wind at the level B/B 0∼10−2. In turn, the nonlinearly excited small-scale KAWs undergo strong dissipation due to resistive or Landau damping and can provide coronal and solar-wind heating. The transient coronal heating observed by Yohkoh and SOHO may be produced by the kinetic Alfvén waves that are excited by parametric decay of fast waves propagating from the reconnection sites.  相似文献

A scenario is proposed to explain the preferential heating of minor ions and differential-streaming velocity between minor ions and protons observed in the solar corona and in the solar wind. It is demonstrated by test-particle simulations that minor ions can be nearly fully picked up by intrinsic Alfvén-cyclotron waves observed in the solar wind based on the observed wave energy density. Both high-frequency ion-cyclotron waves and low-frequency Alfvén waves play crucial roles in the pickup process. A minor ion can first gain a high magnetic moment through the resonant wave–particle interaction with ion-cyclotron waves, and then this ion with a large magnetic moment can be trapped by magnetic mirror-like field structures in the presence of the low-frequency Alfvén waves. As a result, the ion is picked up by these Alfvén-cyclotron waves. However, minor ions can only be partially picked up in the corona because of the low wave energy density and low plasma β. During the pickup process, minor ions are stochastically heated and accelerated by Alfvén-cyclotron waves so that they are hotter and flow faster than protons. The compound effect of Alfvén waves and ion-cyclotron waves is important in the heating and acceleration of minor ions. The kinetic properties of minor ions from simulation results are generally consistent with in-situ and remote features observed in the solar wind and solar corona.  相似文献

Based on the event observed by ISEE 3 near the Earth’s orbit at 01:21 UT on April 5, 1979, we investigate the diffusive shock acceleration of ions and the generation of Alfvén waves by accelerated particles near the quasi-parallel parts of interplanetary shock fronts within a quasi-linear approach. The theory is shown to give an excessively high level of Alfvén wave generation by accelerated particles at significant deflection angles of the interplanetary magnetic field from the normal to the shock front. At the Earth’s orbit, the Alfve´ n waves produced by accelerated ions are confined within the frequency range 5 × 10?2?0.5 Hz, and their spectral peak with a wave amplitude δBB corresponds to a frequency ν = (1?2)×10?2 Hz. The high-frequency part of the wave spectrum (ν ≥ 0.5 Hz) is subjected to damping on thermal protons. The calculated spectra of the accelerated ions and Alfvén waves generated by them reproduce the main features observed in experiments.  相似文献

The excitation of Alfvénic waves in solar spicules by localized Alfvénic pulses is investigated. A set of incompressible MHD equations in the two-dimensional xz plane with steady flows and sheared magnetic fields is solved. Stratification due to gravity and transition region between chromosphere and corona is taken into account. An initially localized Alfvénic pulse launched below the transition region can penetrate from transition region into the corona. We show that the period of the transversal oscillations is in agreement with those observed in spicules. Moreover, it is found that the excited Alfvénic waves spread during propagation along the spicule length, and suffer efficient damping of the oscillations amplitude. The damping time of the transverse oscillations increased with decreasing k b values.  相似文献

Alfvénic waves are thought to play an important role in coronal heating and solar wind acceleration. Here we investigate the dissipation of standing Alfvén waves due to phase mixing at the presence of steady flow and sheared magnetic field in the stratified atmosphere of solar spicules. The transition region between chromosphere and corona has also been considered. The initial flow is assumed to be directed along spicule axis, and the equilibrium magnetic field is taken 2-dimensional and divergence-free. It is determined that in contrast to propagating Alfvén waves, standing Alfvén waves dissipate in time rather than in space. Density gradients and sheared magnetic fields can enhance damping due to phase mixing. Damping times deduced from our numerical calculations are in good agreement with spicule lifetimes. Since spicules are short living and transient structures, such a fast dissipation mechanism is needed to transport their energy to the corona.  相似文献

Alfvénic waves are thought to play an important role in coronal heating and solar wind acceleration. Here we investigate the dissipation of such waves due to phase mixing at the presence of shear flow and field in the stratified atmosphere of solar spicules. The initial flow is assumed to be directed along spicule axis and to vary linearly in the x direction and the equilibrium magnetic field is taken 2-dimensional and divergence-free. It is determined that the shear flow and field can fasten the damping of standing Alfvén waves. In spite of propagating Alfvén waves, standing Alfvén waves in Solar spicules dissipate in a few periods. As height increases, the perturbed velocity amplitude does increase in contrast to the behavior of perturbed magnetic field. Moreover, it should be emphasized that the stratification due to gravity, shear flow and field are the facts that should be considered in MHD models in spicules.  相似文献

An analysis of micropulsation data, recorded at Borok during upstream wave events observed by the HEOS satellite in the solar wind, clearly demonstrates that pulsation activity was present at Borok only when the solar wind velocity was sufficiently large compared with the sunward component of the Alfvén velocity along the interplanetary magnetic field. We show that the form of this relationship is consistent with the generation of the Borok pulsations by the Kelvin-Helmholtz mechanism at the magnetopause. The experimentally determined threshold for this wave excitation agrees best with theory when the latter represents a magnetosheath flow of finite thickness and nonlinear effects of the interaction are included. The modified theoretical treatment is given in the appendix.  相似文献

A unified theory of low frequency instabilities in a two component (cold and hot) finite-β magnetospheric plasma is suggested. It is shown that the low frequency oscillations comprise two wave modes : compressional Alfvén and drift mirror mode. No significant coupling between them is found in the long-wave approximation. Instabilities due to spontaneous excitation of these oscillations are considered. It is found that the temperature anisotropy significantly influences the instability growth rate at low frequency. A new instability due to the temperature anisotropy and density gradient appears when the frequency of compressional Alfvén waves is close to the drift mirror mode frequency. The theoretical predictions are compared in detail with the Pc5 event of 27 October 1978 observed simultaneously by the GEOS 2 satellite and the STARE radar facility. It is shown that the experimental results can be interpreted in terms of a compressional Alfvén wave driven by the drift anisotropy instability.  相似文献

We consider a model of a coronal loop that is a cylindrical magnetic tube with two surface electric currents. Its principal sausage mode has no cut-off in the long-wavelength limit. For typical coronal conditions, the period of the mode is between one and a few minutes. The sausage mode of flaring loops could cause long-period pulsations observed in microwave and hard X-ray ranges. There are other examples of coronal oscillations: long-period pulsations of active-region quiet loops in the soft X-ray emission are observed. We assume that these can also be caused by sausage waves. The question arises of how the sausage waves are generated in quiet loops. We assume that they can be generated by torsional oscillations. This process can be described in the framework of the nonlinear three-wave interaction formalism. The periods of interacting torsional waves are similar to the periods of torsional oscillations observed in the solar atmosphere. The timescale of the sausage-wave excitation is not much longer than the periods of interacting waves, so that the sausage wave is excited before torsional waves are damped.  相似文献

A study is made of the influence of cool dispersion (due to ion inertia) upon the propagation of Alfvén waves in the magnetosphere. It is shown that the Alfvén velocity minimum elongated along the magnetic field, may act as a waveguide. Some waveguiding properties of the plasmapause are investigated and relevant eigen-modes determined. The possibility of interpreting geomagnetic pulsations of various types as eigen-oscillations of the waveguide at the plasmapause, is discussed.  相似文献

Excess heating of the active region solar atmosphere is interpreted by the decay of MHD slow-mode waves produced in the corona through the non-linear coupling of Alfvén waves supplied from subphotospheric layers. It is stressed that the Alfvén-mode waves may be very efficiently generated directly in the convection layer under the photosphere in magnetic regions, and that such magnetic regions, at the same time, provide the ‘transparent windows’ for Alfvén waves in regard to the Joule and frictional dissipations in the photospheric and subphotospheric layers. Though the Alfvén waves suffer considerable reflection in the chromosphere and in the transition layer, a certain fraction of this large flux is propagated out to the corona, and a large velocity amplitude exceeding the local Alfvén velocity is attained during the propagation along the magnetic tubes of force into a region of lower density and weaker magnetic field. The otherwise divergence-free velocity field in Alfvén waves gets involved in such a case with a compressional component (slow-mode waves) which again is of considerable velocity amplitude relative to the local acoustic velocity when estimated by using the formulation for non-linear coupling between MHD wave modes derived by Kaburaki and Uchida (1971). Therefore, the compressional waves thus produced through the non-linear coupling of Alvén waves will eventually be thermalized to provide a heat source. The introduction of this non-linear coupling process and the subsequent thermalization of thus produced slow-mode waves may provide means of converting the otherwise dissipation-free Alfvén mode energy into heat in the corona. The liberated heat will readily be redistributed by conduction along the magnetic lines of force, with higher density as a consequence of increased scale height, and thus the loop-like structure of the coronal condensations (or probably also the thread-like feature of the general corona) may be explained in a natural fashion.  相似文献

We suggest a two-step mechanism for the generation of the parallel electric field at the Alfvén wave. At the first step, the coupling with the compressional mode due to the magnetic field non-uniformity and finite plasma pressure provides the parallel magnetic field of Alfvén wave. At the second step, the compressional mode acquires the parallel electric field due to coupling with the electrostatic mode as required by the quasi-neutrality condition in kinetics. The parallel electric field acquired by the Alfvén mode is considerably larger than that due to the single-step coupling between the Alfvén and electrostatic modes in kinetics.  相似文献
