Using a consistent perturbation theory for collisionless disk-like and spherical star clusters, we construct a theory of slow
modes for systems having an extended central region with a nearly harmonic potential due to the presence of a fairly homogeneous
(on the scales of the stellar system) heavy, dynamically passive halo. In such systems, the stellar orbits are slowly precessing,
centrally symmetric ellipses (2: 1 orbits). Depending on the density distribution in the system and the degree of halo inhomogeneity,
the orbit precession can be both prograde and retrograde, in contrast to systems with 1: 1 elliptical orbits where the precession
is unequivocally retrograde. In the first paper, we show that in the case where at least some of the orbits have a prograde
precession and the stellar distribution function is a decreasing function of angular momentum, an instability that turns into
the well-known radial orbit instability in the limit of low angular momenta can develop in the system. We also explore the
question of whether the so-called spoke approximation, a simplified version of the slow mode approximation, is applicable
for investigating the instability of stellar systems with highly elongated orbits. Highly elongated orbits in clusters with
nonsingular gravitational potentials are known to be also slowly precessing 2: 1 ellipses. This explains the attempts to use
the spoke approximation in finding the spectrum of slow modes with frequencies of the order of the orbit precession rate.
We show that, in contrast to the previously accepted view, the dependence of the precession rate on angular momentum can differ
significantly from a linear one even in a narrow range of variation of the distribution function in angular momentum. Nevertheless,
using a proper precession curve in the spoke approximation allows us to partially “rehabilitate” the spoke approach, i.e.,
to correctly determine the instability growth rate, at least in the principal (O(α
T−1/2) order of the perturbation theory in dimensionless small parameter α
T, which characterizes the width of the distribution function in angular momentum near radial orbits. 相似文献

We have classified orbits in a stationary triaxial stellar system created from a cold dissipationless collapse of 100,000 particles. In order to integrate the orbits, two potential approximations with different fitting functions were used in turn. We found that the relative amount of chaotic versus regular orbits does depend on the chosen approximation of potential, even though both models resulted in very good fits of the underlying exact potential. On the other hand, the content of regular orbits, i.e., its distribution among main families, does not strongly depend of the potential approximation, being therefore a more robust signature of the gravitational system under study. 相似文献

We consider disk and spherical subsystems of stars with nearly radial orbits under conditions when the well-known radial orbit instability is not possible. This requires that the precession of stellar orbits be retrograde, i.e., in the direction opposite to the orbital rotation of stars. We show that an instability that is an analogue of the loss-cone instability known in plasma physics can then develop in the presence of a “loss cone” in the angular momentum distribution of stars, which ensures a deficit or even absence of stars with low angular momenta. Examples of systems with a loss cone are the centers of galaxies or star clusters with massive black holes. The instability can produce a flux of stars onto the galactic center, i.e., it can serve as a mechanism of fueling the nuclear activity of galaxies. Mathematically, the problem is reduced to analyzing simple characteristic equations that describe small perturbations in a disk and a sphere of radially highly elongated stellar orbits. In turn, these characteristics equations are derived through a number of successive simplifications of the general linearized Vlasov equations (i.e., the system that includes the collisionless Boltzmann kinetic equation and the Poisson equation) in action—angle variables. 相似文献

Observations of the Galactic Centre show evidence of one or two disc-like structures of very young stars orbiting the central supermassive black hole within a distance of a few 0.1 pc. A number of analyses have been carried out to investigate the dynamical behaviour and consequences of these discs, including disc thickness and eccentricity growth as well as mutual interaction and warping. However, most of these studies have neglected the influence of the stellar cusp surrounding the black hole, which is believed to be one to two orders of magnitude more massive than the disc(s).
By means of N -body integrations using our bhint code, we study the impact of stellar cusps of different compositions. We find that although the presence of a cusp does have an important effect on the evolution of an otherwise isolated flat disc, its influence on the evolution of disc thickness and warping is rather mild in a two-disc configuration. However, we show that the creation of highly eccentric orbits strongly depends on the graininess of the cusp (i.e. the mean and maximum stellar masses). While Chang recently found that full cycles of Kozai resonance are prevented by the presence of an analytic cusp, we show that relaxation processes play an important role in such highly dense regions and support short-term resonances. We thus find that young disc stars on initially circular orbits can achieve high eccentricities by resonant effects also in the presence of a cusp of stellar remnants, yielding a mechanism to create S-stars and hypervelocity stars.
Furthermore, we discuss the underlying initial mass function (IMF) of the young stellar discs and find no definite evidence for a non-canonical IMF. 相似文献

The motion of a black hole about the centre of gravity of its host galaxy induces a strong response from the surrounding stellar population. We treat the case of a harmonic potential analytically and show that half of the stars on circular orbits in that potential shift to an orbit of lower energy, while the other half receive a positive boost and recede to a larger radius. The black hole itself remains on an orbit of fixed amplitude and merely acts as a catalyst for the evolution of the stellar energy distribution function f ( E ). We show that this effect is operative out to a radius of approximately three to four times the hole's influence radius, R bh . We use numerical integration to explore more fully the response of a stellar distribution to black hole motion. We consider orbits in a logarithmic potential and compare the response of stars on circular orbits, to the situation of a 'warm' and 'hot' (isotropic) stellar velocity field. While features seen in density maps are now wiped out, the kinematic signature of black hole motion still imprints the stellar line-of-sight mean velocity to a magnitude ≃13 per cent the local rms velocity dispersion σ. A study in three dimensions suggests a reduced effect for polar orbits. 相似文献

We used a multipolar code to create, through the dissipationless collapses of systems of 1,000,000 particles, three self-consistent
triaxial stellar systems with axial ratios corresponding to those of E4, E5 and E6 galaxies. The E5 and E6 models have small,
but significant, rotational velocities although their total angular momenta are zero, that is, they exhibit figure rotation;
the rotational velocity decreases with decreasing flattening of the models and for the E4 model it is essentially zero. Except
for minor changes, probably caused by unavoidable relaxation effects, the systems are highly stable. The potential of each
system was subsequently approximated with interpolating formulae yielding smooth potentials, stationary for the non-rotating
model and stationary in the rotating frame for the rotating ones. The Lyapunov exponents could then be computed for randomly
selected samples of the bodies that make up the different systems, allowing the recognition of regular and partially and fully
chaotic orbits. Finally, the regular orbits were Fourier analyzed and classified using their locations on the frequency map.
As it could be expected, the percentages of chaotic orbits increase with the flattening of the system. As one goes from E6
through E4, the fraction of partially chaotic orbits relative to that of fully chaotic ones increases, with the former surpassing
the latter in model E4; the likely cause of this behavior is that triaxiality diminishes from E6 through E4, the latter system
being almost axially symmetric. We especulate that some of the partially chaotic orbits may obey a global integral akin to
the long axis component of angular momentum. Our results show that is perfectly possible to have highly stable triaxial models
with large fractions of chaotic orbits, but such systems cannot have constant axial ratios from center to border: a slightly
flattened reservoir of highly chaotic orbits seems to be mandatory for those systems. 相似文献

We investigate how the formation and evolution of extrasolar planetary systems can be affected by stellar encounters that occur in the crowded conditions of a stellar cluster. Using plausible estimates of cluster evolution, we show how planet formation may be suppressed in globular clusters while planets wider than ≳0.1 au that do form in such environments can be ejected from their stellar system. Less crowded systems such as open clusters have a much reduced effect on any planetary system. Planet formation is unaffected in open clusters and only the wider planetary systems will be disrupted during the cluster's lifetime. The potential for free-floating planets in these environments is also discussed. 相似文献

We investigate different approximate methods of computing the perturbations on the orbits of Oort cloud comets caused by passing stars, by checking them against an accurate numerical integration using Everhart’s RA15 code. The scenario under study is the one relevant for long-term simulations of the cloud’s response to a predefined set of stellar passages. Our sample of stellar encounters simulates those experienced by the Solar System currently, but extrapolated over a time of 1010 years. We measure the errors of perihelion distance perturbations for high-eccentricity orbits introduced by several estimators – including the classical impulse approximation and Dybczyński’s (1994, Celest. Mech. Dynam. Astron. 58, 1330–1338) method – and we study how they depend on the encounter parameters (approach distance and relative velocity). We introduce a sequential variant of Dybczyński’s approach, cutting the encounter into several steps whereby the heliocentric motion of the comet is taken into account. For the scenario at hand this is found to offer an efficient means to obtain accurate results for practically any domain of the parameter space. 相似文献

The stars that populate the solar neighbourhood were formed in stellar clusters. Through N -body simulations of these clusters, we measure the rate of close encounters between stars. By monitoring the interaction histories of each star, we investigate the singleton fraction in the solar neighbourhood. A singleton is a star which formed as a single star, has never experienced any close encounters with other stars or binaries, or undergone an exchange encounter with a binary. We find that, of the stars which formed as single stars, a significant fraction is not singletons once the clusters have dispersed. If some of these stars had planetary systems, with properties similar to those of the Solar System, the planets' orbits may have been perturbed by the effects of close encounters with other stars or the effects of a companion star within a binary. Such perturbations can lead to strong planet–planet interactions which eject several planets, leaving the remaining planets on eccentric orbits. Some of the single stars exchange into binaries. Most of these binaries are broken up via subsequent interactions within the cluster, but some remain intact beyond the lifetime of the cluster. The properties of these binaries are similar to those of the observed binary systems containing extrasolar planets. Thus, dynamical processes in young stellar clusters will alter significantly any population of Solar System-like planetary systems. In addition, beginning with a population of planetary systems exactly resembling the Solar System around single stars, dynamical encounters in young stellar clusters may produce at least some of the extrasolar planetary systems observed in the solar neighbourhood. 相似文献

We have numerically investigated the stability of retrograde orbits/trajectories around Jupiter and the smaller of the primaries in binary systems RW-Monocerotis (RW-Mon) and Krüger-60 in the presence of radiation. A trajectory is considered as stable if it remains around the smaller mass for at least few hundred binary periods. In case of circular binary orbit, we find that the third order resonance provides the basis for reduction of stability region of retrograde motion of particle in RW-Mon and Sun-Jupiter system both in the presence and absence of radiation. Considering finite ellipticity in Sun-Jupiter system we find that for distant retrograde orbits, radiation from the Sun increases the width of the stable region and covers a significant portion of the region obtained in the absence of solar radiation. Further, due to solar radiation pressure, the stable region in the neighborhood of Jupiter has been found to shift much below the characteristic asymptotic line for the periodic retrograde orbits. In case of Krüger-60 we observe the distant retrograde orbits around the smaller of the primaries get affected considerably with increase in radiation parameter β1. Further the range of velocities for which stable motion may persist narrows down for distant retrograde orbits in this system. 相似文献

The dynamical evolution of small stellar groups composed of N=6 components was numerically simulated within the framework of a gravitational N-body problem. The effects of stellar mass loss in the form of stellar wind, dynamical friction against the interstellar medium, and star mergers on the dynamical evolution of the groups were investigated. A comparison with a purely gravitational N-body problem was made. The state distributions at the time of 300 initial system crossing times were analyzed. The parameters of the forming binary and stable triple systems as well as the escaping single and binary stars were studied. The star-merger and dynamical-friction effects are more pronounced in close systems, while the stellar wind effects are more pronounced in wide systems. Star-mergers and stellar wind slow down the dynamical evolution. These factors cause the mean and median semimajor axes of the final binaries as well as the semimajor axes of the internal and external binaries in stable triple systems to increase. Star mergers and dynamical friction in close systems decrease the fraction of binary systems with highly eccentric orbits and the mean component mass ratios for the final binaries and the internal and external binaries in stable triple systems. Star mergers and dynamical friction in close systems increase the fraction of stable triple systems with prograde motions. Dynamical friction in close systems can both increase and decrease the mean velocities of the escaping single stars, depending on the density of the interstellar medium and the mean velocity of the stars in the system. 相似文献

We systematically investigate the encounters between the Sun and neighbouring stars and their effects on cometary orbits in the Oort cloud, including the intrinsic one with the star Gl 710 (HIP 89 825), with some implications to stellar and cometary dynamics. Our approach is principally based on the combination of a Keplerian‐rectilinear model of stellar passages and the Hipparcos Catalogue (ESA 1997). Beyond the parameters of encounter, we pay particular attention to the observational errors in parallaxes and stellar velocities, and their propagation in time. Moreover, as a special case of this problem, we consider the collision probability of a star passing very closely to the Sun, taking also into account the mutual gravitational attraction between the stars. In the part dealing with the influence of stellar encounters on the orbital elements of Oort cloud comets, we derive new simple formulae calculating the changes in the cometary orbital elements, expressed as functions of the Jeans impulse formula. These expressions are then applied to calculate numerical values of the element changes caused by close encounters of neighbouring stars with some model comets in the Oort cloud. Moreover, the general condition for an ejection of comets from the cloud effected by a single encounter is derived and discussed. 相似文献

We investigate the secular dynamics of three-body circumbinary systems under the effect of tides. We use the octupolar non-restricted approximation for the orbital interactions, general relativity corrections, the quadrupolar approximation for the spins, and the viscous linear model for tides. We derive the averaged equations of motion in a simplified vectorial formalism, which is suitable to model the long-term evolution of a wide variety of circumbinary systems in very eccentric and inclined orbits. In particular, this vectorial approach can be used to derive constraints for tidal migration, capture in Cassini states, and stellar spin–orbit misalignment. We show that circumbinary planets with initial arbitrary orbital inclination can become coplanar through a secular resonance between the precession of the orbit and the precession of the spin of one of the stars. We also show that circumbinary systems for which the pericenter of the inner orbit is initially in libration present chaotic motion for the spins and for the eccentricity of the outer orbit. Because our model is valid for the non-restricted problem, it can also be applied to any three-body hierarchical system such as star–planet–satellite systems and triple stellar systems. 相似文献

We study spherical and disc clusters in a near-Keplerian potential of galactic centres or massive black holes. In such a potential orbit precession is commonly retrograde, that is, the direction of the orbit precession is opposite to the orbital motion. It is assumed that stellar systems consist of nearly-radial orbits. We show that if there is a loss-cone at low angular momentum (e.g. due to consumption of stars by a black hole), an instability similar to loss-cone instability in plasma may occur. The gravitational loss-cone instability is expected to enhance black hole feeding rates. For spherical systems, the instability is possible for the number of spherical harmonics l ≥ 3 . If there is some amount of counter-rotating stars in flattened systems, they generally exhibit the instability independent of azimuthal number m . The results are compared with those obtained recently by Tremaine for distribution functions monotonically increasing with angular momentum.
The analysis is based on simple characteristic equations describing small perturbations in a disc or a sphere of stellar orbits highly elongated in radius. These characteristic equations are derived from the linearized Vlasov equations (combining the collisionless Boltzmann kinetic equation and the Poisson equation), using the action-angle variables. We use two techniques for analysing the characteristic equations: the first one is based on preliminary finding of neutral modes, and the second one employs a counterpart of the plasma Penrose–Nyquist criterion for disc and spherical gravitational systems. 相似文献

Plane, periodic stellar orbits in the spiral gravitational field of the Galaxy superimposed on the axisymmetric background potential are studied in the epicyclic approximation. The superposition of such orbits is illustrated to demonstrate the response of the stellar system to an imposed spiral density perturbation. 相似文献

We study spherically symmetrical equilibrium states of collisionless stellar systems confined to a spherical box. These equilibrium states correspond to the statistics introduced by Lynden-Bell in his theory of 'violent relaxation', and are described by a Fermi–Dirac distribution function. We compute the corresponding equilibrium diagram and show that a global entropy maximum exists for any accessible control parameter. This equilibrium state shows a pronounced separation between a degenerate core and a halo. We therefore check that degeneracy is able to stop the gravitational collapse (of a collisionless system), and we propose a simple model for the 'core–halo' structure. We also discuss the relevance of our study for real galaxies or other astrophysical systems such as massive neutrinos. 相似文献

We consider star clusters with monoenergetic distribution functions that monotonically
increase with angular momentum in the entire range of angular momenta (from purely radial orbits to circular ones) or have
a growing region only at low angular momenta. In these cases, there are orbits with a retrograde precession, i.e., in a direction
opposite to the orbital rotation of the star. The presence of a gravitational loss-cone instability, which is also observed
in systems of 1: 1 orbits in near-Keplerian potentials, is associated with such orbits. In contrast to 1: 1 systems, the loss-cone
instability takes place even for distribution functions monotonically increasing with angular momentum, including those for
systems with circular orbits. The regions of phase space with retrograde orbits do not disappear when the distribution function
is smeared in energy. We investigate the influence of a weak inhomogeneity of a heavy halo with a density that decreases with
distance from the center. 相似文献

More than about 50% of stars are in binaries, but most stellar population studies take single star stellar population (ssSSP) models, which do not take binary interactions into account. In fact, the integrated peculiarities of ssSSPs are different from those of stellar populations with binary interactions (bsSSPs). Therefore, it is necessary to investigate the effects of binary interactions on the Lick indices and colors of populations in detail. We show some formulae for calculating the difference between the Lick indices and colors of bsSSPs, and those of ssSSPs. Twenty-five Lick indices and 12 colors are studied in this work. The results can be conveniently used for calculating the effects of binary interactions on stellar population studies and for adding the effects of binary interactions into present ssSSP models. The electronic data and fortran procedures in the paper can be obtained on request from the authors. 相似文献
