We have previously shown that the linewidth distribution in AGN can be accounted for by an axisymmetric broad-emission-line region. In this paper we show that the linewidth distribution changes with redshift and that these changes are dependent on H 0 and q 0. We show that relatively small samples of AGN at high redshift with measured linewidth at half maximum can be used to distinguish between values of H 0 and q 0. Furthermore, larger low-redshift samples can be used to distinguish between luminosity functions and hence different models of quasar evolution.  相似文献

The redshifted spectral line radiation emitted from both atomic fine-structure and molecular rotational transitions in the interstellar medium (ISM) of high-redshift galaxies can be detected in the centimetre, millimetre and submillimetre wavebands. Here we predict the counts of galaxies detectable in an array of molecular and atomic lines. This calculation requires a reasonable knowledge of both the surface density of these galaxies on the sky, and the physical conditions in their ISM. The surface density is constrained using the results of submillimetre-wave continuum surveys. Follow-up OVRO Millimeter Array observations of two of the galaxies detected in the dust continuum have provided direct measurements of CO rotational line emission at redshifts of 2.56 and 2.81. Based on these direct high-redshift observations and on models of the ISM that are constrained by observations of low-redshift ultraluminous infrared galaxies, we predict the surface density of line-emitting galaxies as a function of line flux density and observing frequency. We incorporate the sensitivities and mapping speeds of existing and future millimetre/submillimetre-wave telescopes and spectrographs, and so assess the prospects for blank-field surveys to detect this line emission from gas-rich high-redshift galaxies.  相似文献

Previous observations with the Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer ( RXTE ) have suggested that the power spectral density (PSD) of NGC 3783 flattens to a slope near zero at low frequencies, in a similar manner to that of Galactic black hole X-ray binary systems (GBHs) in the 'hard' state. The low radio flux emitted by this object, however, is inconsistent with a hard state interpretation. The accretion rate of NGC 3783 (∼7 per cent of the Eddington rate) is similar to that of other active galactic nuclei (AGN) with 'soft'-state PSDs and higher than that at which the GBH Cyg X-1, with which AGN are often compared, changes between 'hard' and 'soft' states (∼2 per cent of the Eddington rate). If NGC 3783 really does have a 'hard'-state PSD, it would be quite unusual and would indicate that AGN and GBHs are not quite as similar as we currently believe. Here we present an improved X-ray PSD of NGC 3783, spanning from ∼10−8 to ∼10−3 Hz, based on considerably extended (5.5 yr) RXTE observations combined with two orbits of continuous observation by XMM–Newton . We show that this PSD is, in fact, well fitted by a 'soft' state model which has only one break, at high frequencies. Although a 'hard'-state model can also fit the data, the improvement in fit by adding a second break at low frequency is not significant. Thus NGC 3783 is not unusual. These results leave Arakelian 564 as the only AGN which shows a second break at low frequencies, although in that case the very high accretion rate implies a 'very high', rather than 'hard' state PSD. The break frequency found in NGC 3783 is consistent with the expectation based on comparisons with other AGN and GBHs, given its black hole mass and accretion rate.  相似文献

I review here a few important questions that X‐shooter can help tackle and answer in the field of quasar absorption lines. This includes (i) determine the ionizing background and the physical state of the inter‐galactic medium (IGM) by analysing the characteristics of the Lyman‐α forest and the proximity effect; (ii) investigate the metal content of the high redshift IGM; (iii) study the small scale transverse correlation in the IGM by observing pairs of quasars with small separation in the sky; (iv) study the galaxy‐IGM relations by detecting the counterpart of damped Lyman‐α systems (DLAs) or determining the correlation between the properties of galaxies and absorption lines; (v) detect and characterize the long‐sought cold diffuse molecular (H2 and CO) interstellar medium (ISM) of high redshift galaxies and study its dust content (© 2011 WILEY‐VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. We model the cosmological co-evolution of galaxies and their central supermassive black holes (BHs) within a semi-analytical framework developed on the outputs of the Millennium Simulation. This model, described in detail by Croton et al. and De Lucia and Blaizot, introduces a 'radio mode' feedback from active galactic nuclei (AGN) at the centre of X-ray emitting atmospheres in galaxy groups and clusters. Thanks to this mechanism, the model can simultaneously explain: (i) the low observed mass dropout rate in cooling flows; (ii) the exponential cut-off in the bright end of the galaxy luminosity function and (iii) the bulge-dominated morphologies and old stellar ages of the most massive galaxies in clusters. This paper is the first of a series in which we investigate how well this model can also reproduce the physical properties of BHs and AGN. Here we analyse the scaling relations, the fundamental plane and the mass function of BHs, and compare them with the most recent observational data. Moreover, we extend the semi-analytic model to follow the evolution of the BH mass accretion and its conversion into radiation, and compare the derived AGN bolometric luminosity function with the observed one. While we find for the most part a very good agreement between predicted and observed BH properties, the semi-analytic model underestimates the number density of luminous AGN at high redshifts, independently of the adopted Eddington factor and accretion efficiency. However, an agreement with the observations is possible within the framework of our model, provided it is assumed that the cold gas fraction accreted by BHs at high redshifts is larger than at low redshifts.  相似文献

We investigate the practice of assigning high spin temperatures to damped Lyman α absorption systems (DLAs) not detected in H  i 21-cm absorption. In particular, Kanekar & Chengalur have attributed the mix of 21-cm detections and non-detections in low-redshift  ( z abs≤ 2.04) DLAs  to a mix of spin temperatures, while the non-detections at high redshift were attributed to high spin temperatures. Below   z abs= 0.9  , where some of the DLA host galaxy morphologies are known, we find that 21-cm absorption is normally detected towards large radio sources when the absorber is known to be associated with a large intermediate (spiral) galaxy. Furthermore, at these redshifts, only one of the six 21-cm non-detections has an optical identification and these DLAs tend to lie along the sight-lines to the largest background radio continuum sources. For these and many of the high-redshift DLAs occulting large radio continua, we therefore expect covering factors of less than the assumed/estimated value of unity. This would have the effect of introducing a range of spin temperatures considerably narrower than the current range of  Δ T s≳ 9000 K  , while still supporting the hypothesis that the high-redshift DLA sample comprises a larger proportion of compact galaxies than the low-redshift sample.  相似文献
