Ice concentration data from passive microwave sensors are not reliable during the summer melt season. In this study passive microwave ice concentration estimates are improved upon through the assimilation of ice surface temperature data from the Moderate-Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS). Ice concentration from the analysis is converted to ice extent and compared with data from the Interactive Multisensor Snow and Ice Mapping System (IMS). Ice concentration analysis from data assimilation is in better agreement with the IMS data than the original passive microwave data, with the largest improvements occurring during sea-ice melt.  相似文献

The recent decline in Arctic sea-ice cover (SIC) shows seasonal and regional characteristics. The retreat of summer sea ice has occurred mainly in the Pacific sector of the Arctic. In this study, using the moving t-test, we found an abrupt change event in the long-term sea-ice area in the Pacific sector in summer 1989. This event was linked to the phase shift of the Arctic Oscillation (AO) or the Northern Annular Mode (NAM). Corresponding with the AO/NAM phase shift from negative to positive, the area of the northern hemisphere stratospheric polar vortex decreased abruptly in winter 1988/89. Comparisons of two periods before (1979–1988) and after (1989–1993) the abrupt decrease in sea ice show that an anomalous winter sea level pressure (SLP) was induced by changes in the polar vortex leading to an anomalous cyclonic ice drift in the Pacific sector. The changes in SLP and wind field persisted into the following spring, resulting in a decrease in SIC and warming of the surface air temperature (SAT). The influence of the spring SLP and SAT on ice persisted into the following summer. Meanwhile, the increased summer net surface heat flux over the ocean and sea ice as a result of the decreased spring ice cover further contributed to the summer sea-ice melt.  相似文献

分析了北极海冰的变化规律及其与ENSO循环在准四年时间尺度上的可能联系.结果表明(59.5~179.5°E,60.5~89.5.N)的高纬海域范围内(包括喀拉海、拉普捷夫海及东西伯利亚海,简称为A区)的北极海冰变化以9月份变率最大并具有准四年周期,在这个周期段上A区极冰与Nino 3区的海温变化有明显的位相差.当Nino 3区SST滞后海冰约16个月时,两者达到最大负相关.A区的9月海冰面积指数和SST的时滞相关系数分布表明,次年4月开始在赤道东太平洋区域出现一显著负相关区,次两年的2月负相关达到最大,之后减弱消失.这表明9月A区海冰面积偏小,则次年春季以后出现E1 Nin0现象.海冰与环流相关分析表明,其相互影响机制可能是由于少冰年的弱冷源效应,使得该地区上空气旋环流发展,并通过中高纬相互作用促进北太平洋西北部及东亚沿岸距平气旋式环流的发展,有利于赤道异常西风形成从而触发和维持El Nino事件的产生和发展.  相似文献

利用Hadley海冰密集度资料和NCEP/NCAR再分析资料,分析了北极海冰融冰量及其与大气变量年际关系的年代际变化。结果表明,北极海冰存在显著的年代际变化,且有较强的区域性。东西伯利亚海和波弗特海海冰融冰量的平均值变大且方差增大,格陵兰岛以东洋面海冰融冰量的量值和变率均在减弱。对3个不同气候时段内北极海冰融冰量进行EOF分解,前两个模态均在3个气候时段发生显著的年代际变化,东西伯利亚海海冰融冰量的增加与EOF第一模态年代际变化相关,而EOF第二模态则明显造成了波弗特海海冰的年代际消融。并且,与之相应的大气环流也出现了明显的年代际变化,它们与AO/NAO的年际关系也存在年代际转折,融冰量第二模态与AO的年际关系更为紧密,1960—1990年第二模态与AO的相关系数仅为0.186,而1980—2010年相关系数已升高至0.367。整个北冰洋的海冰融冰量与AO的年际关系也出现了年代际增强,尤其是东西伯利亚地区海冰融冰量与AO的年际关系发生了年代际增强,1980—2010年两者相关达到了0.4以上。而波弗特海融冰量与AO相关系数变化较大,1960—1990年其的相关系数高达-0.488,1980年后却减少至0.161。然而AO却未发生明显的年代际变化。造成北极海冰融冰量及其与大气变量年际关系发生年代际变化的主要因子之一是波弗特高压,其年代际减弱使得极区向东西伯利亚海和波弗特海的海冰输送减弱,导致这两个区域海冰减少,使得AO与北极海冰的年际关系发生了年代际转折。  相似文献

为研究前期以及同时期北极海冰异常对中国夏季高温的影响,根据近50年来中国160个台站的夏季高温资料以及近50年来的北极海冰资料,用SVD诊断分析方法,提取出两场相关最强,协方差最大的三个时次--分别为同期、海冰超前夏季高温9个月和超前13个月.分析研究表明:当北极海冰发生异常时,中国夏季高温异常的响应是滞后的,尤其是滞后9个月、13个月时;北极海冰在1978-1979年突然异常减少,且1979年以后维持海冰偏少的态势;当前期或同时期的北极海冰出现异常增多(减少)时,在中国夏季高温场上的响应以"南区"、"北区"夏季高温异常偏低(偏高),与海冰变化反位相;"中区"夏季高温异常偏高(偏低),与海冰变化同位相.  相似文献

Seasonal minimum Antarctic sea ice extent (SIE) in 2022 hit a new record low since recordkeeping began in 1978 of 1.9 million km2 on 25 February, 0.17 million km2 lower than the previous record low set in 2017. Significant negative anomalies in the Bellingshausen/Amundsen Seas, the Weddell Sea, and the western Indian Ocean sector led to the new record minimum. The sea ice budget analysis presented here shows that thermodynamic processes dominate sea ice loss in summer through enhanced poleward heat transport and albedo–temperature feedback. In spring, both dynamic and thermodynamic processes contribute to negative sea ice anomalies. Specifically, dynamic ice loss dominates in the Amundsen Sea as evidenced by sea ice thickness (SIT) change, while positive surface heat fluxes contribute most to sea ice melt in the Weddell Sea.  相似文献

利用1961年12月—2022年2月新疆冬季气温、北极海冰等资料,探讨北极海冰变化影响新疆冬季气温的物理模态、影响机制。结果表明,北极海冰的变化与新疆大部冬季气温呈正相关,北极海冰变化通过改变北半球大气高低空配置进而影响新疆冬季气温。另外,不同海区的海冰变化对新疆冬季气温的影响有显著区别:格陵兰海—丹麦海峡、拉普捷夫海—东西伯利亚海海冰异常偏多时,新疆大部冬季气温偏高。巴伦支海—喀拉海、鄂霍次克海—白令海峡、哈德孙湾—戴维斯海峡海冰异常偏多时,新疆大部冬季气温偏低。  相似文献

采用Walsh的1953~1990年逐月北极海冰密集度资料、1953~1987年北半球海表温度资料、1946~1989年月平均500hPa高度场以及1980~1989年850hPa高度场、风场和温度场资料,研究了冬季北极关键区(喀拉海、巴伦支海海区)海冰面积变化对后期北太平洋海表温度的影响。研究结果表明:冬季喀拉海、巴伦支海海冰可以影响初夏北太平洋中部海温。冬季该海区海冰偏多,则冬、春季节亚洲大陆冷空气活动偏北,春季白令海海冰偏少、阿留申低涡减弱西移,引导偏北的大陆冷空气南下,在热力和动力共同作用下,使北太平洋中部海温偏低;相反,冬季喀拉海、巴伦支海海冰偏少时,则冬、春季节亚洲大陆冷空气活动偏南,冷空气在东亚地区向南爆发,同时,白令海海冰偏多、阿留申低涡加深东移,北太平洋中部西风偏强且位置偏北,东太平洋副热带高压位置也偏北,使北太平洋中部海温受到来自低纬度地区暖湿气流的影响,海温将偏高。  相似文献

The simulated Arctic sea ice drift and its relationship with the near-surface wind and surface ocean current during 1979-2014 in nine models from China that participated in the sixth phase of the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project(CMIP6)are examined by comparison with observational and reanalysis datasets.Most of the models reasonably represent the Beaufort Gyre(BG)and Transpolar Drift Stream(TDS)in the spatial patterns of their long-term mean sea ice drift,while the detailed location,extent,and strength of the BG and TDS vary among the models.About two-thirds of the models agree with the observation/reanalysis in the sense that the sea ice drift pattern is consistent with the near-surface wind pattern.About the same proportion of models shows that the sea ice drift pattern is consistent with the surface ocean current pattern.In the observation/reanalysis,however,the sea ice drift pattern does not match well with the surface ocean current pattern.All nine models missed the observational widespread sea ice drift speed acceleration across the Arctic.For the Arctic basin-wide spatial average,five of the nine models overestimate the Arctic long-term(1979-2014)mean sea ice drift speed in all months.Only FGOALS-g3 captures a significant sea ice drift speed increase from 1979 to 2014 both in spring and autumn.The increases are weaker than those in the observation.This evaluation helps assess the performance of the Arctic sea ice drift simulations in these CMIP6 models from China.  相似文献

利用1979~2012年青藏高原125个基本、基准站观测日最高及最低气温数据、Hadley中心月平均海冰覆盖率资料、ERA-Interim的风场、高度场等再分析资料,根据相关统计分析、合成分析等方法系统地分析了青藏高原地区秋、冬季冷昼和冷夜日数(低温日数)与关键影响海区海冰的关系及影响机理。结果表明,夏、秋季关键海区海冰偏少时,秋、冬季极地和青藏高原地区500 h Pa位势高度减小,中高纬西伯利亚地区位势高度增强,北极至青藏高原有明显由北向南波动通量,高压反气旋系统在西伯利亚地区形成与壮大,青藏高原以北风场呈现明显偏北风,Rossby波在青藏高原及其以北地区呈现由北向南波动形式,青藏高原以北的西风带地区Rossby波东传减缓,导致经向活动加强,北部冷空气易于通过气流向高原侵袭,秋、冬季青藏高原低温日数将偏多。  相似文献

Boundary-layer measurements made from the Swedish icebreaker Oden during the Arctic Ocean Experiment 2001 (AOE-2001) are analysed. They refer mainly to ice drift in the central Arctic during the period 2–21 August 2001. On board Oden a remote sensing array with a wind profiler, cloud radar and a scanning microwave radiometer, and a regular weather station operated continuously; soundings were also released during research stations. Turbulence and profile measurements on an 18-m mast were deployed on the ice, along with two sodar systems, a microbarograph array and a tethered sounding system. Surface flux and meteorological stations were also deployed on nearby ice floes. There is a clear diurnal cycle in radiation and also in wind speed, cloud base and visibility. It is absent in temperature and humidity, probably due to the very strong control by melting/ freezing ice and snow. In the advection of warm air, latent heat of melting maintains the surface temperature at 0 °C, while with a negative energy balance the latent heat of freezing of the salty ocean water acts to maintain the surface temperature > −2 °C. The constant presence of water at the surface maintains a relative humidity close to 100%, and this is also often facilitated by an increasing specific humidity through the capping inversion, making entrainment a moisture source. This ensures cloudy conditions, with low cloud and fog prevailing most of the time. Intrusions of warm and moist air from beyond the ice edge are frequent, but the local Arctic boundary layer remains at a relatively constant temperature, and is shallow and well mixed with strong capping inversions. Power spectra of surface-layer wind speed sometimes show large variance at low frequency. A scanning radiometer provides a monitoring of the vertical thermal structure with a spatial and temporal resolution not seen before in the Arctic. There are often two inversions, an elevated main inversion and a weak surface inversion, and occasionally additional inversions occur. Enhanced entrainment across the main inversion appears to occur during frontal passages. Variance of the scanning radiometer temperatures occurs in large pulses rather than varying smoothly, and the height to the maximum variance appears to be a reasonable proxy for the boundary-layer depth.  相似文献

Air quality in eastern China has becoming more and more worrying in recent years, and haze is now No.1 air pollution issue. Results in this study show the decreasing Arctic sea ice(ASI) is an important contributor to the recent increased haze days in eastern China. The authors find that the number of winter haze days(WHD) in eastern China is strongly negatively correlated with the preceding autumn ASI during 1979–2012, and about 45%– 67% of the WHD interannual to interdecadal variability can be explained by ASI variability. Following previous studies on the impact of ASI loss on the northern hemisphere climate, the authors' studies further reveal that the reduction of autumn ASI leads to positive sea-level pressure anomalies in mid-latitude Eurasia, northward shift of track of cyclone activity in China, and weak Rossby wave activity in eastern China south of 40N during winter season. These atmospheric circulation changes favor less cyclone activity and more stable atmosphere in eastern China, leading to more haze days there. Furthermore, the patterns of circulation changes associated with autumn ASI and WHD are in very good agreement over the East Asia, particularly in eastern China. The authors suggest that haze pollution may continue to be a serious issue in the near future as the decline of ASI continues under global warming.  相似文献

Associations between the autumn Arctic sea ice concentrations (SICs) and North American winter precipitation were examined using singular value decomposition. The results show that a reduced SIC in the majority of the Arctic is accompanied by dry conditions over the Great Plains, the southern United States, Mexico, eastern Alaska, and southeastern Greenland, and by wet conditions over the majority of Canada, the northeastern United States, and the majority of Greenland. Atmospheric circulation anomalies associated with the SIC variability show a wave train structure that is persistent from autumn to winter and is responsible for the covariability between the autumn Arctic SICs and North American winter precipitation. This relationship suggests a potential long-term outlook for the North American winter precipitation.  相似文献

本文应用奇异值分解等统计方法,探讨冬季北太平洋海冰浓度、海温与大尺度大气环流型间的联系。分析结果表明:冬季北太平洋海域海冰存在一个主要的分布型,即鄂霍次克海和白令海的海冰呈反位相。海冰的该种分布特征是与大气中的WP型紧密联系的,并以大气超前海冰一个月最为明显。同时,WP型强迫作用于黑潮暖流区的海温,海温滞后大气一个月。具体表现为在东亚冬季风较弱的年份,鄂霍次克海海冰增多,白令海海冰减少,黑潮暖流区海温增高,反之则相反。  相似文献

The data-collection campaign for the 2008 International Polar Year–Circumpolar Flaw Lead System Study saw the Canadian Coast Guard Ship (CCGS) Amundsen, a research icebreaker, overwinter in high-concentration unconsolidated sea ice in Amundsen Gulf. Environmental monitoring continued into the open-water season. During this period, the Amundsen registered five relatively deep mean sea-level pressure minima (less than 100?kPa). Three were selected for further analysis based on season and the nature of the underlying ocean or sea-ice surface: (1) a winter pressure minimum over unconsolidated sea ice, (2) a spring pressure minimum which likely contributed to the break-up of the sea-ice cover on Amundsen Gulf, and (3) a summer pressure minimum over open water. The characteristics of these pressure minima and the impact of their passage on the atmospheric boundary layer and on the sea-ice cover as they crossed Amundsen Gulf were examined. Several features were revealed by the analysis. (1) The winter and summer pressure minima were migratory cyclones accompanied by Arctic frontal waves with characteristics very similar to the polar frontal waves associated with the migratory cyclones found at more southerly latitudes, whereas the spring pressure minimum was attributed to an Arctic frontal trough of low pressure with the cyclonic centre remaining south of the Gulf. (2) The passage of the frontal-wave cyclone in winter and the frontal trough of low pressure in spring disrupted the equilibrium that had been established during more settled periods between the atmospheric boundary layer and the mosaic surface (leads, polynyas, and sea ice); however, equilibrium was quickly re-established. (3) In summer, the thermal structure of the lower atmospheric boundary layer persisted through the passage of the frontal-wave cyclone over the open-water surface. (4) The passage of the frontal-wave cyclone in winter and the frontal trough of low pressure in spring modified the mesoscale sea-icescape.  相似文献
