We describe a simple irradiance monitor intended for use in assessing the suitability of candidate sites for a worldwide network of small solar telescopes. Radio noise continuum emissions observed in metric and deca-metric wave frequencies are, in general, associated with actively varying sunspot groups accompanied by the S-component of microwave radio emissions. It is known that these continuum emission sources, often called type I storm sources, are often associated with type III burst storm activity from metric to hectometric wave frequencies. This storm activity is, therefore, closely connected with the development of these continuum emission sources.It is shown that the S-component emission in microwave frequencies generally precedes by several days the emission of these noise continuum storms of lower frequencies. In order for these storms to develop, the growth of sunspot groups into complex types is very important with the increase of the average magnetic field intensity and area of these groups. In particular, the types of these groups such as and are very important on the generation of noise continuum storm sources and sharp increase of the flux of these continuum emissions. This fact suggests that sunspot magnetic configuration and its variation, both space and time, are very effective on the growth of the sources for these noise continuum emissions.Although we have not known yet the true mechanism of these emissions, it is very likely that energetic electrons, 10 to 100 keV, accelerated in association with the variation of sunspot magnetic fields, are responsible as the sources of those radio emissions. Furthermore it seems that these electrons are contributing to the emission of type III burst storms, which are associated with the noise continuum storm sources. In explaining the origin of these storms, some plasma processes must be taken into consideration. Furthermore, it should be remarked that the storage mechanism of the electrons mentioned above plays an important role in generating both the noise continuum emissions and type III burst storms, because on-fringe type III bursts are all generated above these noise continuum storms sources. After reviewing the theories of these noise continuum storm emissions, a model is briefly considered to explain the relation between these continuums and type III bursts, and a discussion is given on the role of energetic electrons on these two emissions. It is pointed out that instabilities associated with these electrons and their relation to their own stabilizing effects are important in interpreting both of these storm emissions.Astrophysics and Space Science Review Paper.  相似文献

Observations with the 6-m telescope revealed eight new magnetic, chemically peculiar stars: HD 29925, HD 40711, HD 115606, HD 168796, HD 178892, HD 196691, HD 209051, and BD+32°2827. Zeeman observations of all these objects have been carried out for the first time. We selected candidates by analyzing the depression profile at a wavelength of λ5200 Å. This technique for selecting candidate magnetic stars was shown to be efficient: we found magnetic fields in 14 of the 15 objects that we selected for our observations with a Zeeman analyzer. A maximum longitudinal field strength B e exceeding 8 kG was found in HD 178892; in HD 209051 and HD196691, B e reaches 3.3 and 2.2 kG, respectively. For the remaining stars, we obtained lower limits of the longitudinal field (more than several hundred G).  相似文献

The infrared and radio continuum fluxes of a number of OB-stars are compared to theoretical models. This gives us information about the mass loss rates and the structure of the stellar wind. The more extreme O-star Pup appears to show an effect of clumping in its continuum flux.  相似文献

This article describes the observations of a type III radio burst observed at 103 MHz simultaneously by the two radio telescopes situated at Rajkot (22.3°N, 70.7°E) and Thaltej (23°N, 72.4°E). This event occurred on September 30, 1993 at about 0430 UT and lasted for only half a minute. The event consisted of several sharp spikes in a group. The rise and fall time of these are comparable, however the peaks of individual spikes varied by a factor of four. The comparison of these observations with the data of solar radio spectrograph HiRAS indicates that this was a metric radio burst giving highest emission at about 103 MHz.  相似文献

The type-I radio continuum may arise from the combination of two electrostatic waves, both directed nearly normal to the magnetic field. One wave, near the upper-hybrid frequency, is generated by gyroresonance with superthermal electrons and comes into equilibrium with these electrons. The other wave, at the lower-hybrid frequency, is generated by the loss-cone instability of trapped superthermal protons in those wave directions for which the lower-hybrid frequency is an exact multiple of the proton gyrofrequency. The brightness temperature of the continuum indicates both the energy of the superthermal electrons and the existance of at least a small number of superthermal protons.  相似文献

We studied 24 spotless flares of Ha importance 1 which occurred during the 21st cycle of solar activity. The spotless flares could be grouped in three categories according to their location and time history of the associated active region. Our association of the flares with radio events was based on relative timing and on the flare importances. Weak microwave gradual rise and fall events were frequently recorded during the occurrence of the spotless flares. A few flares from our sample could be associated with impulsive and complex microwave bursts. More than six hours after the two-ribbon flare of 21 May 1980, the hard X-ray spectrometer aboard the SMM imaged an extensive arch above the flare region which proved to be the lowest part of a stationary post-flare noise storm recorded at the same time at Culgoora. The X-ray arch extended over 3 or more arc minutes to a projected distance of 95 000 km, and its real altitude was most probably between 110 000 and 180 000 km. The mean electron density in the cloud was close to 109 cm–3 and its temperature stayed for many hours at a fairly constant value of about 6.5 × 106 K. The bent crystal spectrometer aboard the SMM confirms that the arch emission was basically thermal. Variations in brightness and energy spectrum at one of the supposed footpoints of the arch seem to correlate in time with radio brightness suggesting that suprathermal particles from the radio noise regions dumped in variable quantities into the low corona and transition layer; these particles may have contributed to the population of the arch, after being trapped and thermalized. The arch extended along the H = 0 line thus apparently hindering any upward movement of the upper loops reconnected in the flare process. There is evidence from Culgoora that this obstacle may have been present above the flare since 15–30 min after its onset.  相似文献

The Chinese Spectral Radio Heliograph(CSRH) is an advanced aperture synthesis solar radio heliograph, independently developed by National Astronomical Observatories, Chinese Academy of Sciences. It consists of 100 reflector antennas,which are grouped into two antenna arrays(CSRH-I and CSRH-II) for low and high frequency bands respectively. The frequency band of CSRH-I is 0.4–2 GHz and that for CSRH-II is 2–15 GHz. In the antenna and feed system, CSRH uses eleven feeds to receive signals coming from the Sun. The radiation pattern has a lower side lobe and the back lobe of the feed is well illuminated. The characteristics of gain G and antenna noise temperature T affect the quality of solar radio imaging. For CSRH, the measured G is larger than 60 d Bi and T is less than 120 K. After CSRH-I was established, we successfully captured a solar radio burst between 1.2–1.6 GHz on 2010 November12 using this instrument and this event was confirmed through observations with the Solar Broadband Radio Spectrometer at 2.84 GHz and the Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite. In addition, an image obtained from CSRH-I clearly revealed the profile of the solar radio burst. The other observational work involved the imaging the Fengyun-2E geosynchronous satellite which is assumed to be a point source.Results indicate that the data processing method applied in this study for deleting errors in a noisy image could be used for processing images from other sources.  相似文献

We study the statistical relationship between type III radio bursts and optical flares, using the comprehensive flare data base at the NOAA National Geophysical Data Center (Boulder, Colorado), and the radio observations obtained with the ARTEMIS multichannel spectrograph in Nancay (France), operating at 500–100 MHz.At variance with previous results, we find that type III probability of occurrence depends only weakly upon the spatial extension of the flare observed in H, but strongly upon its brightness. We also confirm that type III probability increases with proximity to sunspots and with mass motions (surges and prominence activity); in addition, our statistical data are consistent with both relations holding at fixed flare brightness. Thus, some of the conditions favorable to type III occurrence are characteristic of compact flares, while others are characteristic of large and long-duration flares, which are often related to mass ejections. This apparent paradox suggests that particle acceleration and magnetic expansion are at work simultaneously in the ejection of electron streams out of flaring sites.  相似文献

We study the occurrence probability of type III radio bursts during flares as a function of the flare position on the Sun. We find that this probability peaks around 30° east of the central meridian, which points to a reciprocal tilt of the average radiation pattern of type IIIs. We argue that anisotropic scattering of the radiation by overdense coronal fibers parallel to the magnetic field is the dominant factor determining the orientation of radiation patterns. It follows that the average magnetic field appears to be tilted 30° west from the vertical. We also find that within a given active region, the average type III production rate of flares peaks 1° west of the center of gravity of all the flares of this active region.We infer that the coronal magnetic field above active regions presents a strong east-west asymmetry, resulting from the well known asymmetry at the photospheric level. As the west side of an active region covers a smaller area with stronger magnetic field than the east side, western flares are generally closer to open field lines than eastern flares. As a consequence, accelerated particles on the trailing (east) side of active regions usually stay trapped in magnetic loops, while on the leading (west) side they are more likely to escape along open lines into interplanetary space. As a result of the initial westward tilt of these open lines, we estimate that the corresponding Archimedean spiral is on average (apparently) rooted 15° west of the flare.  相似文献

A plot of frequency separation in fine structure in solar continuum radio bursts against emission frequency indicates that the frequency structure cannot represent local proton plasma frequency modulation. However, the observations are consistent with the interpretation of the frequency structure as harmonics of the local electron cyclotron frequency and lead to reasonable estimates of the ratio between magnetic and kinetic pressures in stable coronal magnetic field configurations producing continuum radio sources.  相似文献

We have made scanning observations with the HartRAO 26-m radio telescope to obtain a pencil-beam map of 67 per cent of the sky at 2326 MHz. This is the highest resolution and highest frequency radio continuum map of this type made of such a large area of sky.   In this paper we describe the observations and data reduction procedures used to produce the survey. The resulting map has an angular resolution (HPBW) of 20 arcmin, and the rms pointing accuracy is 1.2 arcmin. The rms noise fluctuations are less than 30-mK T FB over the whole map. We estimate that the uncertainty in the temperature scale is less than 5 per cent, and that the error in the absolute zero level is better than 80-mK T FB in any direction.   High-contrast half-tone images of the data with a model of the diffuse galactic background subtracted are presented. These images show many complex emission structures up to and beyond 50° latitude, and illustrate the quality of the data. Extracts from the survey data are available via FTP by arrangement with the authors.  相似文献

By using the data of an especially great solar radio microwave burst occurring at 1700 UT on 30 October, 1992 in a very active active region NOAA/USAF Region 7321, on the basis of the theoretical emission mechanism of nonthermal gyro-synchrotron radiation, we have derived the radiation parameters such as the energy distribution of energetic electrons in the source region of the burst, the emission coefficient, absorption coefficient and source function of the gyro-synchrotron radiation and made a simple analysis.  相似文献
