A 700 km wide-angle reflection/refraction profile carried out in the central North Atlantic west of Ireland crossed the Erris Trough, Rockall Trough and Rockall Bank, and terminated in the western Hatton-Rockall Basin. The results reveal the presence of a number of sedimentary basins separated by basement highs. The Rockall Trough, with a sedimentary pile up to 5 km thick, is underlain by thinned continental crust 8–10 km thick. Some major fault block structures are identified, especially on the eastern margin of the Rockall Trough and in the adjacent Erris Trough. The Hatton-Rockall Basin is underlain by westward-thinning continental crust 22–10 km thick. Sedimentary strata are up to 5 km thick. The strata in the Rockall Trough and Hatton-Rockall Basin probably range in age from Late Palaeozoic to Cenozoic. However, the basins have different sedimentation histories and differ in structural style. The geometry of the crust and sediments suggests that the Rockall Trough originated by pure shear crustal stretching, associated with rift deposits and Cenozoic thermal sag strata. In contrast, the development of the Erris Trough, located on unthinned continental crust, was facilitated by shallow, brittle extension with little deep crustal attenuation. A two-layered crust occurs throughout the region. The lower crustal velocity in the Hatton-Rockall Basin is higher than that in the Rockall Trough. The velocity structure shows no indication of crustal underplating by upper mantle material in the region.

Between 1996 and the mid-2000s the upper waters (200–700 m) of the Rockall Trough became warmer (+0.72 °C), saltier (+0.088) and reduced in nitrate and phosphate (−2.00 µM and −0.14 µM respectively). These changes, out-with calculated errors, can be explained by the varying influence of southern versus subpolar water masses in the basin as the Subpolar Gyre weakened and contracted. Upper water properties strongly correlate with a measure of the strength of the Subpolar Gyre (the first principal component of sea surface height over the Subpolar North Atlantic) prior to the mid-2000s. As the gyre weakens, the upper layers of the trough become warmer (r−0.85), more saline (r−0.86) and reduced in nitrate and phosphate (r+0.81 and r+0.87 respectively). Further the proportion of subpolar waters in the basin decreases from around 50% to less than 20% (r+0. 88). Since the mid−2000s the Subpolar Gyre has been particularly weak. During this period temperatures decreased slightly (−0.21 °C), salinities remained near constant (35.410±0.005) and phosphate levels low and stable (0.68±0.02 µM). These relative lack of changes are thought to be related to the maximum proportion of southern water masses within the Rockall Trough having been reached. Thus the upper water properties are no longer controlled by changes in the relative importance of different water masses in the basin (as prior to the mid-2000s), but rather a different process. We suggest that when the gyre is particularly weak the interannual changes in upper water properties in the Rockall Trough reflect changes in the source properties of the southern water masses. Since the early-2000s the Subpolar Gyre has been weaker than observed since 1992, or modelled since 1960–1970. Hence upper waters within the Rockall Trough may be warmer, saltier and more depleted in nitrate and phosphate than at any time in the last half century.

Near-seabed (<50 m) sediments were studied throughout the Irish sector of the Rockall Trough (ca. 123,000 km2) based on a combined analysis of shallow seismic (3.5 kHz) and multibeam swath data acquired by the Irish National Seabed Survey and reprocessed here at higher resolution. The detailed identification of seven acoustic facies served to classify the Rockall Trough into six main sedimentary provinces, incorporating the well-known Feni Drift, Donegal-Barra Fan and Rockall Bank mass flow. In the northern part of the study area, extensive mass transport deposits from both flanks of the trough are the dominant depositional features. Debris flow deposits formed by ice streaming of the British-Irish ice sheet characterise most of the Donegal-Barra Fan, whereas turbidite deposition occurs towards the toe of the fan. On the western margin of the trough, the post-glacial Rockall Bank mass flow deposit displays a rough topography with no acoustic penetration. Several failure scarps are visible on the flank of the bank where the mass flow originated, and pass downslope into large sediment lobes and smaller debris flow deposits. Smaller-scale mass transport deposits were also discovered close to some canyons indenting the eastern slope. High seismic penetration characterises the Feni contourite drift deposit, and precise mapping of its geographical extent shows that it is considerably wider than previously reported. The sediment waves that drape this drift are interpreted as predominantly relict features, and their varied geometry suggests a complex oceanographic regime. In the deeper part of the trough, the data reveal novel evidence of the widespread occurrence (about 12,000 km2) of distinct seismic and backscatter signatures indicating the possible presence of fluid escape structures within fine-grained sediments of mixed contouritic, hemipelagic and turbiditic origin. Sediment overloading and increased pore pressure resulting from extensive mass wasting to the north of the area is a likely cause of dewatering-rooted fluid migration towards the seabed, but further investigations are required to confirm the nature and origin of such fluids in the Rockall Trough.

The role of Mediterranean Overflow Water (MOW) in creating subsurface salinity anomalies within the Rockall Trough, a gateway to high latitude areas of deep convection, has been examined closely in recent years. Eulerian investigations of high latitude property fields have suggested that these subsurface anomalies are likely the result of variability in the zonal extent of the eastern limb of the subpolar gyre: when expanded into the eastern North Atlantic, the gyre is presumed to limit the extent to which MOW is able to penetrate northward to subpolar latitudes. However, though the depth of the subsurface salinity anomalies in the Rockall Trough supports the hypothesis that the intermittent presence of MOW is involved in creating the anomalies, MOW pathways to the Rockall Trough have not yet been established. Here, Lagrangian trajectories from floats released in the eastern North Atlantic between 1996 and 1997 and synthetic trajectories launched within an eddy-resolving ocean general circulation model are used to demonstrate that two main density neutral transport pathways lead to the Rockall Trough. One pathway involves the transport of relatively fresh waters as part of the North Atlantic Current and the other involves the transport of relatively salty waters from the eastern reaches of the subtropical North Atlantic. The results from this study indicate that changes in these pathways over time can explain the subsurface salinity variability in the Rockall Trough.

Total platinum-group elements (PGEs) abundances in basalts from the spreading axis of Mariana Trough ranged from 0.418×10~(-9) to 1.022×10~(-9), and primitive mantle-normalized PGE patterns are of positive slope showing the relative enrichment of PPGE (platinum, palladium, rhodium) and gold relative to IPGE. Compared with other mantle-originated rocks, these basalts have lower PGE contents and wider ranges of primitive mantle-normalized ratios of palladium content to iridium one, palladium content to platinum one and palladium content to gold one exhibiting relative platinum and iridium depletion. Characteristics of PGE patterns indicated that the studied Mariana Trough basalts originated from low partial melting, and the MORB mantle beneath the spreading center had been contaminated by the arc-island mantle. In the aspect of trace elements, Mariana Trough basalts showed the enrichment of LILE, lead and LREE, indicating that they had been influenced by subduction compositions. All these demonstrated that Mariana Trough basalts are products of partial melting from a mixed mantle (the contamination of MORB mantle by arc-island mantle).

The Rockall Bank Mass Flow (RBMF) is a large, multi-phase submarine slope failure and mass flow complex. It is located in an area where the Feni Drift impinges upon the eastern flank of the Rockall Bank in the NE Atlantic. A 6100 km2 region of slope failure scarps, extending over a wide water depth range and with individual scarps reaching up to 22 km long and 150 m high, lies upslope of a series of mass flow lobes that cover at least 18,000 km2 of the base of slope and floor of the Rockall Trough. The downslope lobe complex has a negative topographic relief along much of its northern boundary, being inset below the level of the undisplaced contourite drift at the base of slope. The southern margin is topographically more subtle but is marked by the sharp termination of sediment waves outside the lobe. Within the lobe complex the southern margin of the largest lobe shows a positive relief along its southern margin. The initial failure is suggested to have occurred along coherent layer-parallel detachment surfaces at depths of up to 100 m and this promoted initial downslope block sliding which in turn transformed into debris flows which moved out into the basin. The remains of a deep erosional moat linked to the onlapping contourite complex bisects the region of failed slope, and post-failure thermohaline currents have continued to modify the mass flow in this area. Differential sedimentation and erosion associated with the moat may have promoted slope instability. Following the major failure phase, continuous readjustments of the slope occurred and resulted in small-volume turbidites found in shallow gravity cores collected on the lobes. The short term trigger for the failure remains uncertain but earthquake events associated with a deep-seated tectonic lineament to the north of the mass flow may have been important. A Late Pleistocene age for the slope failure is likely. The RBMF is unusual in that it records large-scale collapse of a contourite body that impinged on a sediment-undersupplied slope system. Unlike many other large slope failure complexes along the NE Atlantic margin, the RBMF occurs in a region where there was little overloading by glacial sediment.

Volcanic rocks both from the northern East China Sea (NECS) shelf margin and the northern Okinawa Trough are subalkaline less aluminous, and lower in High Field Strength Elements (HFSE).These rocks are higher in Large Ion Lithophile Elements (LILE),thorium and uranium contents, positive lead anomalies, negative Nb-Ta anomalies, and enrichment in Light Rare Earth Elements (LREE).Basalts from the NECS shelf margin are akin to Indian Ocean Mid-Ocean Ridge Basalt (MORB),and rhyolites from the northern Okinawa Trough have the highest 207 Pb/ 204 Pb and 208 Pb/ 204 Pb ratios. The NECS shelf margin basalts have lower 87 Sr/ 86 Sr ratios,ε N d and σ 18 O than the northern Okinawa Trough silicic rocks.According to 40 K– 40 Ar isotopic ages of basalts from the NECS shelf margin, rifting of the Okinawa Trough may have been active since at least 3.65–3.86 Ma.The origin of the NECS shelf margin basalt can be explained by the interaction of melt derived from Indian Ocean MORB-like mantle with enriched subcontinental lithosphere. The basalts from both sides of the Okinawa Trough may have a similar origin during the initial rifting of the Okinawa Trough, and the formation of basaltic magmas closely relates to the thinning of continental crust. The source of the formation of the northern Okinawa Trough silicic rocks was different from that of the middle Okinawa Trough, which could have been generated by the interaction of basaltic melt with an enriched crustal component. From the Ryukyu island arc to East China, the Cenozoic basalts have apparently increasing trends of MgO contents and ratios of LREE to Heavy Rare Earth Elements (HREE),suggesting that the trace element variabilities of basalts may have been influenced by the subduction of the Philippine Sea plate, and that the effects of subduction of the Philippine Sea plate on the chemical composition of basaltic melts have had a decreasing effect from the Ryukyu island arc to East China.

The Wyville Thomson Ridge forms part of the barrier to the meridional circulation across which cold Nordic Sea and Arctic water must traverse to reach the Atlantic Ocean. Overflow rates across the ridge are variable (but can be dramatic at times), and may provide a subtle indicator of significant change in the circulation in response to climate change. In spring 2003, a series of CTD sections were conducted during a large overflow event in which Norwegian Sea Deep Water (NSDW) cascaded down the southern side of the ridge into the Rockall Trough at a rate of between 1 and 2 Sv. The NSDW was partially mixed with overlying North Atlantic Water (NAW), and comprised about 1/3rd of the cascading water. The components of NAW and NSDW in the overflow were sufficiently large that there must have been a significant divergence of the inflow through the Faroe-Shetland Channel, and of the outflow through the Faroe Bank Channel. As the plume descended, its temperature near the sea bed warmed by over 3 °C in about a day. Although the slope was quite steep (0.03), the mean speed of the current (typically 0.36 m s−1) was too slow for significant entrainment of NAW to occur (the bulk Richardson number was of order 5). However, very large overturns (up to 50 m) were evident in some CTD profiles, and it is demonstrated from Thorpe scale estimates that the warming of the bottom waters was due to mixing within the plume. It is likely that some of the NSDW had mixed with NAW before it crossed the ridge. The overflow was trapped in a gully, which caused it to descend to great depth (1700 m) at a faster rate, and with less modification due to entrainment, than other overflows in the North Atlantic. The water that flowed into the northern part of the Rockall Trough had a temperature profile that ranged from about 3 to 8 °C. Water with a temperature of >6 °C probably escaped into the Iceland Basin, between the banks that line the north-western part of the Trough. Colder water (< 6 °C) must have travelled down the eastern side of the Rockall Bank, and may have had a volume flux of up to 1.5 Sv.

Rockall Trough may represent the oldest part of the Atlantic Ocean north of latitude 51°N. Stratigraphical evaluation of this hypothesis has been hindered by the lack of dateable samples of the Trough's sedimentary succession. A recent programme of dredging, aimed at sampling the sediment prism along the Trough's upper continental slope, yielded five hauls of in-situ carbonate rocks. Microfaunal analysis of these rocks suggests that the deposition of the marginal sediment prism spans the Late Cretaceous—Recent interval, tending to confirm that Rockall Trough was already in being in Late Cretaceous times.

One of the major pathways in the northern part of the Meridional Overturning Circulation (MOC) is that of the deep water in the Nordic Seas that runs through the Faroe-Shetland Channel (FSC) and Faroe Bank Channel (FBC), as well as crossing the Wyville Thomson Ridge (WTR), on its way into the Atlantic Ocean. The WTR overflow cascades down the southern side of the ridge via the narrow Ellett Gully to the Cirolana Deep (CD) which, at 1700 m, is the deepest hole in the extreme north of the Rockall Trough. The overflow accounts for nearly 1/10th of the total Faroe-Shetland Channel Bottom Water (FSCBW) discharged through the Faroese channels and is an important intermediate water mass in the Rockall Trough. Over a period of only seven days in April 2003 bottom water temperatures cooled dramatically, from 4.46 to 3.03 °C in the CD and from 3.93 to 2.54 °C in the Ymir Trough (YT). A numerical general circulation model (MITgcm) has been applied in order to reproduce the details of this dense water overflow event. Model results were consistent with the observed cooling and total water transport. It was found that the descending gravity current forms a pair of mesoscale eddies with cyclonic and anticyclonic vorticity at the exit to the CD. Analysis of mixing processes were obtained when a passive tracer was included in the model. It was found that downstream flow is characterized by an explosive detrainment regime in the CD. The model sensitivity runs revealed that the final depth to which the overflow descends depends on the initial upstream velocity of the overflow, as well as the buoyancy difference. It is argued that models of overflows need to have realistic representations of the density structure of the overflow, and sufficiently fine vertical resolution, for the subsequent fate of the overflow to be accurately represented.

Rockall Bank is an unusual example of an isolated continental shelf developed on the subsided Rockall Plateau microcontinent. The sediment distribution on Rockall Bank has been investigated using topographic, seismic, sonar and photographic data. The present sedimentation regime may reflect post-Flandrian transgressive burial of the older substrate. The limited development of the shelf reflects the lack of sediment supply available on Rockall Bank which, with the exception of glacial periods, has probably been submerged for the past 37 m.y.

Wyville Thomson Ridge Overflow Water (WTOW), which is the only part of the outflow from the Norwegian Sea not to directly enter the Iceland Basin, is shown to be a significant water mass in the northern Rockall Trough. It is found primarily at intermediate depths (600–1200 m) beneath the northward flowing warm Atlantic waters, and above recirculating Mediterranean influenced waters and Labrador Sea Water (LSW). The bottom of the WTOW layer can be identified by a mid-depth inflexion point in potential temperature–salinity plots. An analysis of historical data reveals that WTOW has been present in all but eight of the last 31 years at 57.5°N in the Rockall Trough. A denser component of WTOW below 1500 m has also been present, although it appears to be less persistent (12 out of the 31 years) and limited to the west of the section. The signature of intermediate WTOW was absent in two periods, the mid-1980s and early 1990s, both of which coincided with a freshening, and probable increase in volume, of LSW in the trough. Potential temperature–salinity diagrams from historical observations indicate that WTOW persists at least as far south as 55°N (and as far west as 20°W in the Iceland Basin) although its signature is quickly lost on leaving the Rockall Trough. We suggest that a transport of WTOW down the western side of the trough exists, with WTOW at intermediate depths entering the eastern trough either via a cyclonic recirculation, or as a result of eddy activity. Further, WTOW is seen on the Rockall–Hatton Plateau and in the deep channels connecting with the Iceland Basin, suggesting additional possible WTOW transport pathways. These suggested transport routes remain to be confirmed by further observational or modelling studies.

Cold-water coral reefs and mounds are observed mainly on slopes and topographic highs, in areas with high current speeds. Previous investigations of the near-bed hydrodynamic regime around cold-water coral mounds at the Southwest Rockall Trough margin have revealed the presence of internal waves with a diurnal tidal frequency. Hitherto only short-term measurements existed on the particle supply to the corals and data are lacking on the seasonal variability. Bottom landers equipped with sensors recording near-bottom current dynamics were deployed at two sites in a mound area on the Southwest Rockall Trough margin, one with a dense coral cover and one without coral cover. At both sites a similar seasonal variation in internal-wave activity was recorded with high activity during winter and summer months and less dynamic conditions in spring and autumn. Increased intensity of internal-wave activity, reflected in higher average near-bottom current speed and amplitude of daily temperature fluctuations, results in higher mass fluxes as recorded in the sediment traps. On the site without coral cover, mass fluxes are two times higher, compared to the site with dense coral cover. During periods of high mass fluxes a predominance of resuspended material was observed at both sites, as indicated by reduced 210Pb activity and low organic matter concentrations. The flux of resuspended material largely masked the primary pelagic signal. However, low δ15N values in early spring and summer marked the arrival of fresh particles on both sites. A dense coral framework, baffling a large amount of particles settling between the coral branches, results in differences in particle flux, chemical composition and freshness of the trapped material. On the long term the presence of a coral framework plays a crucial role in the build-up of cold-water coral mounds.

Compressional (VP) and shear (Vs) wave velocities have been measured to 1.0 kbar for 14 cores of well-consolidated sedimentary rock from Atlantic and Pacific sites of the Deep Sea Drilling Project. The range of VP (2.05–5.38 km/sec at 0.5 kbar) shows significant overlap with the range of oceanic layer-2 seismic velocities determined by marine refraction surveys, suggesting that sedimentary rocks may, in some regions, constitute the upper portion of layer 2. Differing linear relationships between VP and Vs for basalts and sedimentary rocks, however, may provide a method of resolving layer-2 composition. This is illustra ted for a refraction survey site on the flank of the Mid-Atlantic Ridge where layer-2 velocities agree with basalt, and two sites on the Saya de Malha Bank in the Indian Ocean where layer-2 velocities appear to represent sedimentary rock.

Hydrocarbons in the form of gases, oils and waxes have been observed in the basalts of the Faeroe Islands in the North Atlantic. Gases and traces of oil were observed in the outflowing water of the deep Lopra-1 well drilled in 1981. The hydrocarbon gas was fairly dry, with stable isotopic ratios of δ13C1−3=−41.4; −32.4; −26.5% respectively, typical of a thermogenic gas. High temperature gas chromatography of the oil showed that it consisted mostly of C13−60 n-alkanes. Biomarker distribution observed by GC-MS indicates that the oil was derived from a mature source rock deposited in an anoxic environment; this suggests that the source rock must lie beneath the known basalts.Waxes exhibiting bright yellow fluorescence under UV light were observed as coatings on zeolite minerals widely distributed on the Faeroe Islands. The waxes consist predominantly of higher n-alkanes shown by HTGC. The fluorescence indicates the presence of aromatic compounds. Biomarker distribution indicated that the waxes were derived at least in part from a source rock containing some terrestrial organic matter astestified by the low amounts of oleanane present. The waxes were probably deposited from traces of oil present in deeply circulating waters in fractures within the basalts.Coals which had been suspected to generate some of the hydrocarbons observed in the Faeroese basalts were also examined. Vitrinite values of Ro=0.5% as well as GC-MS analyses of the Suduroy coal extracts showed that these coals are immature and have not generated significant hydrocarbons.
