With accelerated melting of alpine glaciers, understanding the future state of the cryosphere is critical. Because the observational record of glacier response to climate change is short, palaeo‐records of glacier change are needed. Using proglacial lake sediments, which contain continuous and datable records of past glacier activity, we investigate Holocene glacier fluctuations on northeastern Baffin Island. Basal radiocarbon ages from three lakes constrain Laurentide Ice Sheet retreat by ca. 10.5 ka. High sedimentation rates (0.03 cm a?1) and continuous minerogenic sedimentation throughout the Holocene in proglacial lakes, in contrast to organic‐rich sediments and low sedimentation rates (0.005 cm a?1) in neighbouring non‐glacial lakes, suggest that glaciers may have persisted in proglacial lake catchments since regional deglaciation. The presence of varves and relatively high magnetic susceptibility from 10 to 6 ka and since 2 ka in one proglacial lake suggest minimum Holocene glacier extent ca. 6–2 ka. Moraine evidence and proglacial and threshold lake sediments indicate that the maximum Holocene glacier extent occurred during the Little Ice Age. The finding that glaciers likely persisted through the Holocene is surprising, given that regional proxy records reveal summer temperatures several degrees warmer than today, and may be due to shorter ablation seasons and greater accumulation‐season precipitation. Reconstructions of past environmental changes are critical for understanding the natural variability of Earth's climate system and for providing a context for present and future global change. Radiocarbon-dated lake sediments from Lake CF3, northeastern Baffin Island, Arctic Canada, are used to reconstruct past environmental conditions over the last 11,200 years. Numerous proxies, including chironomid-inferred July air temperatures, diatom-inferred lakewater pH, and sediment organic matter, reveal a pronounced Holocene thermal maximum as much as 5°C warmer than historic summer temperatures from 10,000 to 8500 cal yr B.P. Following rapid cooling 8500 cal yr B.P., Lake CF3 proxies indicate cooling through the late Holocene. At many sites in northeastern Canada, the Holocene thermal maximum occurred later than at Lake CF3; this late onset of Holocene warmth is generally attributed to the impacts of the decaying Laurentide Ice Sheet on early Holocene temperatures in northeastern Canada. However, the lacustrine proxies in Lake CF3 apparently responded to insolation-driven warmth, despite the proximity of Lake CF3 to the Laurentide Ice Sheet and its meltwater. The magnitude and timing of the Holocene thermal maximum at Lake CF3 indicate that temperatures and environmental conditions at this site are highly sensitive to changes in radiative forcing.  相似文献

The analysis of cores collected in northernmost Baffin Bay, from within the area of the North Water Polynya, permits definition of a composite sedimentary sequence ca. 12 m thick spanning the last 10 000 14C yr, with only a few discontinuities. Palynological analyses were performed in order to reconstruct changes in surface water conditions and biogenic production. Transfer functions, using dinocyst assemblages, were applied to estimate sea‐surface temperature (SST) and salinity, as well as the seasonal duration of sea ice cover. At the base of the record, prior to 9300 14C yr BP, dinocysts and organic linings of benthic foraminifers are sparse, indicating harsh conditions and low productivity. After ca. 9300 14C yr BP, the increased concentration of benthic foraminifers (up to 103 linings cm?3) and dinocyst fluxes (102–103 cysts cm?2 yr?1) reveals high biological productivity related to open‐water conditions. The early to middle Holocene, from ca. 9000 to ca. 3600 14C yr BP, is marked by relatively high species diversity in dinocyst assemblages and the significant occurrence of autotrophic taxa such as Spiniferites elongatus, Pentapharsodinium dalei and Impagidinium pallidum. This assemblage suggests conditions at least as warm as at present. From ca. 6400 to ca. 3600 14C yr BP, transfer functions indicate warmer conditions than at present, with SST in August fluctuating up to 5.5°C. A multiproxy study of palaeoceanographic and climatic changes in northernmost Baffin Bay shows that major environmental changes have occurred since the deglaciation of the area at about 12 500 cal. yr BP. The interpretation is based on sedimentology, benthic and planktonic foraminifera and their isotopic composition, as well as diatom assemblages in the sedimentary records at two core sites, one located in the deeper central part of northernmost Baffin Bay and one in a separate trough closer to the Greenland coast. A revised chronology for the two records is established on the basis of 15 previously published AMS 14C age determinations. A basal diamicton is overlain by laminated, fossil-free sediments. Our data from the early part of the fossiliferous record (12 300–11 300 cal. yr BP), which is also initially laminated, indicate extensive seasonal sea-ice cover and brine release. There is indication of a cooling event between 11 300 and 10 900 cal. yr BP, and maximum Atlantic Water influence occurred between 10 900 and 8200 cal. yr BP (no sediment recovery between 8200 and 7300 cal. yr BP). A gradual, but fluctuating, increase in sea-ice cover is seen after 7300 cal. yr BP. Sea-ice diatoms were particularly abundant in the central part of northernmost Baffin Bay, presumably due to the inflow of Polar waters from the Arctic Ocean, and less sea ice occurred at the near-coastal site, which was under continuous influence of the West Greenland Current. Our data from the deep, central part show a fluctuating degree of upwelling after c . 7300 cal. yr BP, culminating between 4000 and 3050 cal. yr BP. There was a gradual increase in the influence of cold bottom waters from the Arctic Ocean after about 3050 cal. yr BP, when agglutinated foraminifera became abundant. A superimposed short-term change in the sea-surface proxies is correlated with the Little Ice Age cooling.  相似文献

Earthquakes that trigger tsunamis are of great geological, ecological and socio-economic importance. The knowledge of the recurrence interval of these events will give information about the hazard for a region. Coastal sediments on the Andaman Islands located in the eastern Bay of Bengal were investigated to find evidence for palaeotsunamis and palaeoearthquakes. Fieldwork was conducted on Red Skin Island and North Cinque Island, south of South Andaman. Sediment material from event-layers was dated by optically stimulated luminescence and radiocarbon dating method. The results show evidence possibly for one earthquake at about 1,000 or 3,000 years before the present together with deposits from possible tsunamis and storms. The complex pattern of co- and post-seismic uplift and subsidence of the Andaman Islands is reflected in the investigated sections and made it possible to reconstruct an event-history for the last 3,000 years.  相似文献

Magnetic analyses have been carried out on sediments collected from Lough Catherine. Northern Ireland, as part of a wider environmental study. The sediments span the whole of the Holocene. Radiocarbon and pollen dating of the palaeomagnetic signature locked in the sediments form the basis of an Irish Holocene geomagnetic master curve. The mineral magnetic characteristics of the sediments correspond with environmental changes, such as eighteenth century landscaping and the elm decline as revealed by pollen analyses. Both marginal and central sediments have been analysed. The sediments can be correlated by using either magnetic, pollen, or 14 C measurements. These three independent core correlation methods all agree extremely well with each other. A mathematical method is described which can be used to calculate continuous accumulation rates and influxes.  相似文献

Primnoa resedaeformis is a deep-sea gorgonian coral with a two-part skeleton of calcite and gorgonin (a fibrillar protein), potentially containing long-term records of valuable paleo-environmental information. For various reasons, both radiocarbon and U/Th dating of these corals is problematic over the last few centuries. This paper explores aspartic acid racemization dating of the gorgonin fraction in modern and fossil specimens collected from the NW Atlantic Ocean. Radiocarbon dating of the fossil specimen indicates a lifespan of 700 ± 100 years, the longest yet documented for any octocoral. Gorgonin amino acid compositions were identical in the fossil and modern specimens, indicating resistance to organic diagenesis. Similar to bone collagen, the fibrillar protein of gorgonin may impose conformational constraints on the racemization of Asp at low temperatures. The rate of racemization of aspartic acid (d/l-Asp) was similar to previously published results from an 1800 year old anemone (Gerardia). The age equation was: age (years BP 2000 AD) = [(d/l − 0.020 (±.002))/.0011 (±.0001)]2 (r2 = 0.97, p < .001). The error in an age estimate calculated by d/l-Asp was marginally better than that for 14C dating over the most recent 50-200 years, although the dating error may be improved by inclusion of more samples over a broader time range. These results suggest that d/l-Asp dating may be useful in augmenting 14C dating in cases where 14C calibrations yield two or more intercept ages, or in screening samples for further 14C or U/Th dating.  相似文献

The behaviour of ice sheets as they retreated from their Last Glacial Maximum (LGM) positions provides insights into Lateglacial and early Holocene ice‐sheet dynamics and climate change. The pattern of deglaciation of the Laurentide Ice Sheet (LIS) in arctic fiord landscapes can now be well dated using cosmogenic exposure dating. We use cosmogenic exposure and radiocarbon ages to constrain the deglaciation history of Clyde Inlet, a 120 km long fiord on northeastern Baffin Island. The LIS reached the continental shelf during the LGM, retreated from the coastal lowlands by 12.5 ± 0.7 ka (n = 3), and from the fiord mouth by 11.7 ± 2.2 ka (n = 4). Rapid retreat from the outer fiord occurred 10.3 ± 1.3 ka (n = 6), with the terminus reaching the inner fiord shortly after 9.4 ka (n = 2), where several moraine systems were deposited between ca. 9.4 and ca. 8.4 ka. These moraines represent fluctuations of the LIS during the warmest summers since the last interglaciation, and this suggests that the ice sheet was responding to increased snowfall. Before retreating from the head of Clyde Inlet, the LIS margin fluctuated at least twice between ca. 7.9 and ca. 8.5 ka, possibly in response to the 8.2 ka cold event. The picritic lavas of Baffin Island represent one of the most primitive Phanerozoic volcanic suites in the world with MgO contents ranging from 22 wt% (29 Mg, cation unit = Mg/100 cations) for olivine-rich lavas to 11 wt% (16 Mg) for olivine-poor lavas. Two magma types can be recognized on the basis of trace element and isotopic geochemistry. N-type magma, which dominates the high-MgO lavas, has depleted LREE patterns [(La/Sm)N0.6–0.7] typical of N-MORB, K/Ti<0.05, and 87Sr/86Sr <0.7032. E-type magma, which dominates the lower MgO lavas, has flat to slightly enriched LREE patterns [(La/Sm)N1.1–1.2] typical of E-MORB, K/Ti>0.5 and 87Sr/86Sr ranging between 0.7032–0.7039. These two magma types are, however, virtually indistinguishable in terms of major clements and many other trace elements. The E and N-type samples are intermixed throughout the volcanic succession, indicating that both types of magma erupted contemporaneously. Although the compositional spectrum observed for major and highly incompatible elements is consistent with olivine fractionation, crystal fractionation cannot account for the difference in the LREE between E-type and N-type lavas. Crustal contamination involving a lower crust composition cannot reproduce the more magnesian E-type lavas.and can only repoduce the lowest (La/Sm)N ratios of the E-type lavas if high degrees of assimilation (50%) have occurred. Partial melting models can reasonably account for the distinct (La/Sm)N ratios and the similar Zr/Y values of the two magma types, but fail to reproduce the observed abundances or REE, Sr, Y and Zr. Compositionally different mantle sources are required to explain the two distinct magma types observed in Baffin Island. A model in which the mantle source is a mixture of enriched plume material and depleted entrained mantle in the head of a mantle plume may explain the contemporaneous eruption of N and E-type magmas in the Baffin Bay picritic suite. The Baffin Island E-type lavas are less enriched in Sr, Y and Zr contents and have lower Zr/Y, for similar (La/Sm)N than the other E-type lavas of the northern North Atlantic region.  相似文献

Melting glaciers and ice caps on Baffin Island contribute roughly half of the sea-level rise from all ice in Arctic Canada, although they comprise only one-fourth of the total ice in the region. The uncertain future response of arctic glaciers and ice caps to climate change motivates the use of paleodata to evaluate the sensitivity of glaciers to past warm intervals and to constrain mechanisms that drive glacier change. We review the key patterns and chronologies of latest Pleistocene and Holocene glaciation on Baffin Island. The deglaciation by the Laurentide Ice Sheet occurred generally slowly and steadily throughout the Holocene to its present margin (Barnes Ice Cap) except for two periods of rapid retreat: An early interval 12 to 10 ka when outlet glaciers retreated rapidly through deep fiords and sounds, and a later interval 7 ka when ice over Foxe Basin collapsed. In coastal settings, alpine glaciers were smaller during the Younger Dryas period than during the Little Ice Age. At least some alpine glaciers apparently survived the early Holocene thermal maximum, which was several degrees warmer than today, although data on glacier extent during the early Holocene is extremely sparse. Following the early Holocene thermal maximum, glaciers advanced during Neoglaciation, beginning in some places as early as 6 ka, although most sites do not record near-Little Ice Age positions until 3.5 to 2.5 ka. Alpine glaciers reached their largest Holocene extents during the Little Ice Age, when temperatures were 1–1.5 °C cooler than during the late 20th century. Synchronous advances across Baffin Island throughout Neoglaciation indicate sub-Milankovitch controls on glaciation that could involve major volcanic eruptions and solar variability. Future work should further elucidate the state of glaciers and ice caps during the early Holocene thermal maximum and glacier response to climate forcing mechanisms.  相似文献

A previous assessment of radiocarbon (14C) dates from alluvial units in southeastern Australia revealed a gap in the geochronological record that coincides with the Holocene climatic optimum. This gap in the alluvial record can be further refined using optically stimulated luminescence (OSL). The chronology of Holocene river terraces on Widden Brook, a sandy alluvial stream in southeastern Australia, was established using 14C and OSL techniques. Combined use of these independent techniques allows for a more rigorous assessment of the alluvial record. The robust chronology, consisting of 38 14C and 11 OSL samples, permitted identification of significant depositional variation within the catchment, resulting from localised geomorphic processes. The three terrace sequences identified yielded distinct chronologies, suggesting alluvial deposition at different times. The sequences exhibited a continuous chronology, which indicated continuous deposition throughout the Holocene. The chronology of terrace sequences within this catchment suggests that terrace formation can be attributed to localised geomorphic processes rather than climatic forcing. New analyses show that Tertiary tholeiitic basalts from the Baffin Bay area have generally primitive characteristics. Comparison of the bulk chemical compositions of the basalts with material of known phase relations suggests that these basalts have properties intermediate between investigated natural and synthetic compositions. A discrete group of these basalts coincides in projection with the composition of the liquid produced by the partial melting of garnet periodotite at 30 kb. The compositions in this group are believed to be parental to the other rocks in the province principally through a mechanism of olivine fractionation. Eclogite fractionation is invoked to account for the chemical differences between the two suites of basalts in Baffin Bay.  相似文献

The Baffin Bay picrites have been the focal point of a controversy concerning the MgO content of primary magmas derived from the upper mantle. A sample population of 48 lava chilled margins collected across the Baffin Bay volcanic succession at the northeastern tip of Padloping Island exhibits a prominent compositional mode between 14 and 16 weight percent MgO (19–22 Mg, cation units = Mg/100 cations). The petrography of these samples, however, requires that the Padloping magmas were mixtures of olivine crystals and liquid at their eruption. Olivine phenocrysts constituted 15 to 30 volume percent of these magmas and retain compositions requiring coexisting liquid compositions with only 10 to 13.5 weight percent MgO (14–18.5 Mg). However, highly magnesian, olivine xenocrysts (up to Fo 93) found in the most magnesian lavas require the former existence of liquids with at least 18 weight percent MgO (24 Mg). If these xenocrysts represent early cumulates, then the primary liquids of the Padloping suite must have been at least this MgO rich with temperatures greater than 1,425° C. Such primary liquids could have evolved by olivine crystallization to a steady state, equilibrated crystal — liquid mixtures in a shallow reservoir system prior to eruption. The compositions of the liquids of these mixtures appear to have been perched at the point of plagioclase saturation at approximately 1,275° C.Despite the complications of mechanical sorting of olivine crystals, the virtual compositional reciprocity of olivine addition and olivine fractionation requires that the bulk compositions of picritic lavas provide compositional analogues of their primary magmas. A comparison of Phanerozoic picrite suites indicates that the Fe contents of terrestrial primary magmas of tholeiitic affinity have a restricted range from 6–9 Fe. Primary magmas associated with intra-plate volcanism appear to be distinctly more Fe-rich than those associated with inter-plate volcanism. The Al/Si ratios of Phanerozoic picrite suites could suggest that the primary magmas of MORB volcanism have equilibrated with relatively Fe-poor source regions at deeper levels in the Earth's mantle than those of other tholeiitic primary magmas.  相似文献

A detailed chronology of hydrological changes that occurred in northeastern Mali during the Holocene is based on approximately 30 14C dates of molluscs which were collected from the lacustrine and paludal deposits of the Ine Sakane sand sea. The presence of cemented paleodunes indicates that the end of the Pleistocene was and arid period. This was followed by an early Holocene lacustrine episode (ca. 9500–6500 yr B.P.) during which numerous lakes occupied depressions formed in the Cretaceous limestones and between the sand ridges. These lakes reflect a significant rise in the water table. Between ca. 6500 and 5500 yr B.P. the lakes dried up, although the water table remained close to the ground surface in several areas. Calcareous concretions formed at the water table fringe during this time, thereby “fossilizing” some of the middle Holocene dunes. A second lacustrine episode is dated between ca. 5500 and 4500 yr B.P.; it corresponds to the establishment of numerous Neolithic settlements in the area. Arid conditions have developed since about 4500 yr B.P. to attain the conditions of the present day. The isotopic composition (18O and 13C) of the fauna reflects highly variable hydrological conditions. Groundwaters were recharged by precipitation which was occasionally very depleted in heavy oxygen (δ18O ? ?13%.). Evaporation induced an enrichment in 18O; high concentrations characterize some lakes. The 13C content of fossil shells reflect: (1) species ecological requirements, (2) isotopic composition of the total inorganic dissolved carbon (TIDC) in groundwaters, and (3) the lake metabolism.  相似文献

A continuous record of insect (Chironomidae) remains preserved in lake sediments is used to infer temperature changes at a small lake in Arctic Canada through the Holocene. Early Holocene summers at the study site were characterized by more thermophilous assemblages and warmer inferred temperatures than today, presumably in response to the positive anomaly in Northern Hemisphere summer insolation. Peak early Holocene warmth was interrupted by two cold reversals between 9.5 and 8 cal ka BP, during which multiple cold-stenothermous chironomid taxa appeared in the lake. The earlier reversal appears to correlate with widespread climate anomalies around 9.2 cal ka BP; the age of the younger reversal is equivocal but it may correlate with the 8.2 cal ka BP cold event documented elsewhere. Widespread, abrupt climate shifts in the early Holocene illustrate the susceptibility of the climate system to perturbations, even during periods of enhanced warmth in the Northern Hemisphere.  相似文献

Holocene temporal and spatial reservoir age variations have been investigated in three Danish fjords (Horsens Fjord, Tempelkrog in Isefjord and Skælskør Nor) by 14C dating paired samples of terrestrial plant material and marine molluscs in sediment cores. The local reservoir age offsets at all three sites show significant temporal and local variations, with ΔR(t) values ranging from −425 to 620 yr. The ΔR(t) values for Horsens Fjord range from −425 to 0 yr, for Tempelkrog from −230 to 360 yr and for Skælskør Nor from 30 to 620 yr. The differences are best explained by differences in local hydrographic configuration, catchment characteristics and connection with the inner Danish seas. The observed temporal ΔR(t) variations are not synchronous, which is probably due to the overriding role played by numerous local factors affecting the ΔR(t) values. Based on the reservoir data from Horsens Fjord and Tempelkrog, it is suggested as a working hypothesis that the ΔR value for Kattegat prior to 4500 cal. yr BP was negative, i.e. between −130 and −200 yr. The temporal and local variations in the reservoir age underline the problems and uncertainties connected with radiocarbon-dating fossil human skeletons with marine diets. Overall, our data show that reservoir ages in Danish fjords and estuaries are both site-specific and time-specific, implying that modern reservoir ages cannot simply be applied back in time. This conclusion may also be valid in the case of fjords and estuaries in large parts of the Baltic too.  相似文献

The growing importance of understanding past abrupt climate variability at a regional and global scale has led to the realisation that independent chronologies of past environmental change need to be compared between various archives. This has in turn led to attempts at significant improvements in the required precision at which records can be dated. Radiocarbon dating is still the most prominent method for dating organic material from terrestrial and marine archives, and as such many of the recent developments in improving precision have been aimed at this technique. These include: (1) selection of the most suitable datable fractions within a record, (2) the development of better calibration curves, and (3) more precise age modelling techniques. While much attention has been focussed on the first two items, testing the possibilities of the relatively new age modelling approaches has not received much attention. Here, we test the potential for methods designed to significantly improve precision in radiocarbon-based age models, wiggle match dating and various forms of Bayesian analyses. We demonstrate that while all of the methods can perform very well, in some scenarios, caution must be taken when applying them. It appears that an integrated approach is required in real life dating situations where more than one model is applied, with strict error calculation, and with the integration of radiocarbon data with sedimentological analyses of site formation processes.  相似文献
