Abstract

Beginning with an energy loss relation of the form S = aVn, it is possible to describe a number of basic analytical types of flows. The derived general equation may be shown to give solutions for simple cases such as radial and vortex flows as well as reducing to Laplace's equation. Laminar flow is a special case with n = 1, and further solutions range from laminar to fully turbulent flow.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

First of all models of the various transfer processes that occur in the snow cover are discussed in relation to its internal structure. When these processes are unsteady they can be described by the various forms of the equation of diffusion. However, the fact that the snowpack has a stratified structure complicates the application of this type of equation. To overcome this problem, in a particular case, a model is proposed for the flow of melt water in the presence of ice layers.  相似文献

Abstract

The interaction of a mean flow with a random fluctuation field is considered. This interaction is described by the averaged Navier-Stokes equation in which terms nonlinear in the fluctuation field are expressed in terms of the mean flow and the statistical properties of the fluctuation field, which is assumed to be homogeneous, isotropic, and helical. Averaged equations are derived using a functional technique. These equations are solved for a mean background flow that depends linearly on the position vector. The solutions show that large-scale vortices may arise in this system.  相似文献

Abstract

A finite element model to simulate runoff and soil erosion from agricultural lands has been developed. The sequential solutions of the governing differential equations were found: Richards' equation with a sink term for infiltration and soil water dynamics under cropped conditions; St Venant equation with kinematic wave approximation for overland and channel flow; and sediment continuity equation, for soil erosion. The model developed earlier has been improved to simulate erosion/deposition in impoundments and predicted and observed soil loss values were in reasonably good agreement when the model was tested for a conservation bench terrace (CBT) system. The finite element model was extensively applied to study the hydrological behaviour of a CBT system vis-à-vis the conventional system of sloping borders. The model estimates runoff and soil loss reasonably well, under varying conditions of rainfall and at different crop growth stages. The probable reasons for discrepancies between observation and simulation are reported and discussed. Sensitivity analysis was carried out to study the effect of various hydrological, soil and topographical parameters, such as ratio of contributing to receiving areas, weir length, depth of impoundment, slope of contributing area, etc. on the flow behaviour in a CBT system.  相似文献

Abstract

The adjustment of a nonlinear, quasigeostrophic, stratified ocean to an impulsively applied wind stress is investigated under the assumption that barotropic advection of vortex tube length is the most important nonlinearity. The present study complements the steady state theories which have recently appeared, and extends earlier, dissipationless, linear models.

In terms of Sverdrup transport, the equation for baroclinic evolution is a forced advection-diffusion equation. Solutions of this equation subject to a “tilted disk” Ekman divergence are obtained analytically for the case of no diffusion and numerically otherwise. The similarity between the present equation and that of a forced barotropic fluid with bottom topography is shown.

Barotropic flow, which is assumed to mature instantly, can reverse the tendency for westward propagation, and thus produce regions of closed geostrophic contours. Inside these regions, dissipation, or equivalently the eddy field, plays a central role. We assume that eddy mixing effects a lateral, down-gradient diffusion of potential vorticity; hence, within the closed geostrophic contours, our model approaches a state of uniform potential vorticity. The solutions also extend the steady-state theories, which require weak diffusion, by demonstrating that homogenization occurs for moderately strong diffusion.

The evoiution of potential vorticity and the thermocline are examined, and it is shown that the adjustment time of the model is governed by dissipation, rather than baroclinic wave propagation as in linear theories. If dissipation is weak, spin-up of a nonlinear ocean may take several times that predicted by linear models, which agrees with analyses of eddy-resolving general circulation models. The inclusion of a western boundary current may accelerate this process, although dissipation will still play a central role.  相似文献

Abstract

Solutions of the steady, inviscid, non-linear equations for the conservation of potential vorticity are presented for linearly sheared geostrophic flow over a right circular cylinder. The indeterminancy introduced by the presence of closed streamline regions is removed by requiring that the steady flow retains above topography a given fraction of that fluid initially present there, assuming the flow to have been started from rest. Those solutions which retain the largest fraction in uniform and negatively sheared streams satisfy the Ingersoll (1969) criterion (that, in the limit of vanishingly small viscosity, closed streamline regions are stagnant) and so are unaffected by Ekman pumping. These flows are set up on the advection time scale. In positively sheared flows the maximum retention solutions do not satisfy the Ingersoll criterion and thus would be slowly spun down on the far longer viscous spin-up time.

For arbitrary isolated topography, both the partial retention and Ingersoll problems are reduced to a one-dimensional non-linear integral equation and the solution of the Ingersoll problem obtained in the limit of strong positive shear. The stagnant region is symmetric about the zero velocity line and extends to infinity in the streamwise direction. Its cross-stream width is proportional to the rotation rate and fractional height occupied by the obstacle and inversely proportional to the strength of the shear, decreasing inversely as the square of distance upstream and downstream.  相似文献

Abstract

Non-Darcian flow in a finite fractured confined aquifer is studied. A stream bounds the aquifer at one side and an impervious stratum at the other. The aquifer consists of fractures capable of transmitting water rapidly, and porous blocks which mainly store water. Unsteady flow in the aquifer due to a sudden rise in the stream level is analysed by the double-porosity conceptual model. Governing equations for the flow in fractures and blocks are developed using the continuity equation. The fluid velocity in fractures is often too high for the linear Darcian flow so that the governing equation for fracture flow is modified by Forcheimer's equation, which incorporates a nonlinear term. Governing equations are coupled by an interaction term that controls the quasi-steady-state fracture—block interflow. Governing equations are solved numerically by the Crank-Nicolson implicit scheme. The numerical results are compared to the analytical results for the same problem which assumes Darcian flow in both fractures and blocks. Numerical and analytical solutions give the same results when the Reynolds number is less than 0.1. The effect of nonlinearity on the flow appears when the Reynolds number is greater than 0.1. The higher the rate of flow from the stream to the aquifer, the higher the degree of nonlinearity. The effect of aquifer parameters on the flow is also investigated. The proposed model and its numerical solution provide a useful application of nonlinear flow models to fractured aquifers. It is possible to extend the model to different types of aquifer, as well as boundary conditions at the stream side. Time-dependent flow rates in the analysis of recession hydrographs could also be evaluated by this model.  相似文献

Abstract

The problem of topographic forcing by an obstacle against the boundary of a rotating flow is considered in various parameter regimes. The timescale for the motion is the topographic vortex-stretching time, which is inversely proportional to the background rotation rate and the fractional height of the obstacle. For slow flows this time is short compared with the advection time and the governing equation of conservation of potential vorticity is linear. The final state satisfies the non-linear equation for the advection of potential vorticity, however, and so time dependence has given a specific solution to a non-linear problem. The presence of the sidewall causes a stagnant Taylor column to be set up far more rapidly than cases with no sidewall. It is shown that viscosity and mixing arrests the inviscid evolution at some stage, thus some fluid still crosses the obstacle in the steady state. These solutions suggest that experimental results on separation obtained by Griffiths and Linden (1983) can tentatively be ascribed to entrainment and expulsion of fluid through vertical shear layers at the edge of the topography.  相似文献

Abstract

In this paper we study analytically the simplest fluid mechanical model which can mimic the convective behavior which is thought to occur in the solid mantles of the terrestrial planets. The convecting materials are polycrystalline rocks, whose creep behavior depends very strongly on temperature and probably also on pressure. As a simple model of this situation, we consider the flow of a Newtonian viscous fluid, whose viscosity depends strongly on temperature (only), and in fact has an infinite viscosity below a certain temperature, and a constant viscosity above this temperature. This model would also be directly relevant to the convection of a melt beneath its own solid phase (e.g. water below ice, though in that case there are other physical complications).

As a consequence of this assumption, there is a vigorous convection zone overlain by a stagnant lid, as also observed in analogous laboratory experiments (Nataf and Richter, 1982). The analysis is then very similar to that of Roberts (1979), but the extension to variable viscosity introduces important differences, most notably that the boundary between the lid and the convecting zone is unknown, and not horizontal. The resulting buoyancy induced stresses near this boundary are much larger than the stresses produced by buoyancy in the side-wall plumes, and mean that the dynamics of this region, and hence also the heat flux, are independent of the rest of the cell. We give a first order approximation for the Nusselt number-Rayleigh number relationship.  相似文献

Abstract

Fresh-water lenses are formed in unconfined saline aquifers in response to deep percolation from rainfall, artificial recharge, and seepage from irrigation waters and/or in response to injecting fresh water through vertical or horizontal wells. An approximate differential equation is derived in terms of the depth of the fresh-salt water interface below the initial position of the saline-water table. This equation is analogous to that of the ground-water motion in two dimensions. The wealth of knowledge available from solving the latter equation is used to obtain approximate expressions for the movement of the fresh-salt water interface in several flow systems wherein this interface does not reach the bottom of the aquifer. These approximate solutions as well as others for related quantities of interest may afford useful tools for rationally planning the extraction of usable waters from such flow systems.  相似文献

Abstract

Ultrasonic spectroscopy is highly suitable for real-time measurement, in particular for dense particle systems. In the present study, a novel measurement device, namely a portable ultrasonic device (PUD), is designed and manufactured for measuring solid suspension concentration and flow velocity simultaneously with respect to the propagation of ultrasound waves in a solid–liquid mixture at different temperatures. A series of experiments were conducted in the laboratory to obtain the ultrasonic attenuation of kaolin and reservoir sediment solutions within a wide range of concentrations (1000–300 000 mg/L) at various temperatures (15–27°C). The resulting data were regressed to establish linear functions of attenuation and temperature for concentration. The experimental data were compared with theoretical simulated results to show the effect of particle size distribution on concentration measurement. The flow meter part of the PUD was verified by a standard-speed carriage in the towing tank. According to experimental tests by PUD, it was demonstrated that the accuracy for concentration in full scale is ±5%, and the accuracy for flow velocity is ±2%. Compared with sampled data, good agreements were also found by employing the PUD for sediment concentration and flow velocity measurements in turbidity currents during typhoon floods in a reservoir, which demonstrates that the PUD is operable and reliable on site.

Abstract

The investigation is concerned with the impact of initial uncertainties on predictions. The problem can be solved exactly for sufficiently simple non-linear systems where an exact solution to the deterministic problem is known. In this paper we shall use the advective equation as an example.

It is found that the behavior at large times of the system depends on the initial uncertainty and the nature of the probability density function.

In applications it is normally necessary to introduce a closure approximation because exact analytical solutions are unknown. Such a closure scheme based on the neglect of third and higher moments will be used in the example and solutions from the closure scheme will be compared with the exact solutions.

It is found that the asymptotic values of the uncertainty may be less than the initial uncertainty.  相似文献

Abstract

The groundwater flow equation governing the elevation (h) of the steady-state phreatic surface in a sloping aquifer fed by constant recharge over a bi-circular sector is rhh′ ? r 2 Bh′ + Pr 2 ? PR 2 = 0, where r is the radial coordinate, P is a constant involving recharge and aquifer properties, and B is the slope of the aquifer—bedrock boundary. The derived flow equation describes radially convergent flow through a sloping aquifer that discharges to a water body of fixed head. One important simplification is that in which the width of the bi-circular sector is constant, and the draining land becomes a rectangular aquifer. The bi-circular sector and rectangular-strip groundwater flow problems are solved in terms of implicit equations. The solutions for the steady-state phreatic surfaces depend on the ratio of recharge to hydraulic conductivity, the slope of the aquifer-bedrock, and the downstream constant-head boundary. Computational examples illustrate the application of the solutions.  相似文献

Abstract

It is shown that the inclusion of the nonlinear terms in the equations of motion of a coupled density front of zero potential vorticity results in wave solutions which merely propagate with time. The linear theory, on the other hand, predicts an exponential temporal growth. The nonlinear equation admits steady solutions representing standing waves whereas if the nonlinear terms are omitted no steady solutions exist. The general initial value problem is difficult to solve numerically since the linear problem is ill posed.

In addition we prove that the general similarity solution of the nonlinear equation tends to zero for large times, at any point in space, regardless of the initial condition.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

This paper presents a model of the groundwater flow into a river from an aquifer beneath the river. The mathematical problem is to solve Laplace's equation with a free boundary and the solution procedure uses a variational inequality which leads to an approximate solution using finite differences. The method can be used to provide for example, inflow conditions in river modelling calculations.  相似文献

Abstract

This paper develops a new analytical solution for the aquifer system, which comprises an unconfined aquifer on the top, a semi-confined aquifer at the bottom and an aquitard between them. This new solution is derived from the Boussinesq equation for the unconfined aquifer and one-dimensional leaky confined flow equation for the lower aquifer using the perturbation method, considering the water table over-height at the remote boundary. The head fluctuation predicted from this solution is generally greater than the one solved from the linearized Boussinesq equation when the ratio of the tidal amplitude to the thickness of unconfined aquifer is large. It is found that both submarine groundwater discharges from upper and lower aquifers increase with tidal amplitude–aquifer thickness ratio and may be underestimated if the discharge is calculated based on the average head fluctuation. The effects of the aquifer parameters and linearization of the Boussinesq equation on the normalized head fluctuation are also investigated.

Abstract

The process of wave steepening in Long's model of steady, two-dimensional stably stratified flow over orography is examined. Under conditions of the long-wave approximation, and constant values of the background static stability and basic flow, Long's equation is cast into the form of a nonlinear advection equation. Spectral properties of this latter equation, which could be useful for the interpretation of data analyses under mountain wave conditions, are presented. The principal features, that apply at the onset of convective instability (density constant with height), are:

i) a power spectrum for available potential energy that exhibits a minus eight-thirds decay, in terms of the vertical wavenumber k z -;

ii) a rate of energy transfer across the spectrum that is inversely proportional to the wavenumber for large k z -;

iii) an equipartition between the kinetic energy of the horizontal motion and the available potential energy, under the longwave approximation, although all the disturbance energy is kinetic at the point where convective instability is initiated. It is also shown that features i) and ii) apply to more general conditions that are appropriate to Long's model, not just the long-wave approximation. Application to fully turbulent flow or to conditions at the onset of shearing instability are not considered to be warranted, since the development only applies to conditions at the onset of convective instability.  相似文献

Abstract

A spherical α2-dynamo is presented as an expansion in the free decay modes of the magnetic field. In the limit of vanishing viscosity the momentum equation yields various asymptotic expansions for the flow, depending on the precise form of the dissipation and boundary conditions applied. A new form for the dissipation is introduced that greatly simplifies this asymptotic expansion. When these expansions are substituted back into the induction equation, a set of modal amplitude equations is derived, and solved for various distributions of the α-effect. For all choices of α the solutions approach the Taylor state, but the manner in which this occurs can vary, as previously found by Soward and Jones (1983). Furthermore, as hypothesized by Malkus and Proctor (1975), but not previously demonstrated, the post-Taylor equilibration is indeed independent of the viscosity in the asymptotic limit, and depending on the choice of a may be either steady-state or oscillatory.  相似文献

Abstract

A class of exact solutions to the steady, two-dimensional magnetohydrodynamic equations ina cylindrical geometry is presented. These may model both closed and open magnetic structures found in the solar atmosphere. For closed structures, it is found that increasing the flow speed causes the summit of the arcade of closed magnetic fieldlines to rise. Parameter ranges also exist where the solution has regions of open and closed field, and so the solutions may be relevant for modelling flows in solar magnetic structures such as coronal streamers, X-ray bright points coronal plumes and coronal holes.  相似文献

Abstract

Abstract Land development often results in adverse environmental impact for surface and subsurface water systems. For areas close to the coast, land changes may also result in seawater intrusion into coastal aquifers. Due to this, it is important to evaluate potential adverse effects in advance of any land development. For evaluation purposes a combined groundwater recharge model is proposed with a quasi three-dimensional unconfined groundwater flow equation. The catchment water balance for a planned new campus area of Kyushu University in southern Japan, was selected as a case study to test the model approach. Since most of the study area is covered with forest, the proposed groundwater recharge model considers rainfall interception by forest canopy. The results show that simulated groundwater and surface runoff agree well with observations. It is also shown that actual evapotranspiration, including rainfall interception by forest canopy, is well represented in the proposed simulation model. Several hydrological components such as direct surface runoff rate, groundwater spring flow rate to a ground depression, trans-basin groundwater flow etc., were also investigated.  相似文献
