The THEMISTOCLE array of 18 Cherenkov detectors which has a 3 TeV gamma energy threshold, has detected a signal from the Crab nebula at a 5.8 standard deviation level. Information on the energy spectrum is obtained in the range 3–15 TeV. The integrated flux can be fitted with the form, Φ (> E) = (3.7 ± 0.5) × 10-12 (E/5)-−1.5 ± 0.20 cm−2 s−1 (E in TeV) compatible with the extrapolation of results at lower energies. The Crab signal is used to measure the angular resolution of the multi-telescope technique. The value obtained is 2.3 mr (0.15°) in agreement with the results of simulations, and confirms the interest of this new method for multi-TeV gamma-ray detection.  相似文献

A simultaneous, maximum-likelihood determination of the distance and kinematic parameters of the Pleiades is made. The results are: distance of the cluster d = 135.56 ± 0.72 pc, dispersion σd = 7.66 ± 0.80 pc; space velocity V = 25.94 ± 0.13 km/s, dispersion σv = 0.58 ± 0.09 km/s coordinates of the convergent point A = 101.95° ± 0.47°, D = −41.36° ± 0.29°.  相似文献

Observations of photons at E ≥ 550 GeV from the Crab Nebula are presented and used to assess the potential of multi-telescope systems for γ-ray astronomy.

The Whipple observatory 10 m and 8 m imaging atmospheric erenkov telescopes have been used to provide a stereoscopic view of air showers to make a more complete measurement of air shower parameters. Here we present a measurement of the spread in the arrival direction of primary γ-rays originating from a point source. The data show that the shower arrival direction can be reconstructed with an accuracy of σ = 0.°14.  相似文献

A new imaging atmospheric Cherenkov telescope with a light-weight reflector has been constructed. Light, robust, and durable mirror facets of containing carbon fiber reinforced plastic laminates were developed for the telescope. The reflector has a parabolic shape (f/1.1) with a 30 m2 surface area, which consists of 60 spherical mirror facets. The image size of each mirror facet is 0°.08 (FWHM) on average. The attitude of each facet can be adjusted by stepping motors. After the first in situ adjustment, a point image of about 0°.14 (FWHM) over 3° field of view was obtained. The effect of gravitational load on the optical system was confirmed to be negligible at the focal plane. The telescope has been in operation with an energy threshold for γ-rays of 300 GeV since May 1999.  相似文献

Using data from the HEGRA air shower array, taken in the period from April 1998 to March 2000, upper limits on the ratio Iγ/ICR of the diffuse photon flux Iγ to the hadronic cosmic ray flux ICR are determined for the energy region 20–100 TeV. The analysis uses a gamma–hadron discrimination which is based on differences in the development of photon- and hadron-induced air showers after the shower maximum. A method which is sensitive only to the non-isotropic component of the diffuse photon flux yields an upper limit of Iγ/ICR (at 54 TeV) <2.0×10−3 (at the 90% confidence level) for a sky region near the inner galaxy (20°< galactic longitude <60° and |galactic latitude |<5°). A method which is sensitive to both the isotropic and the non-isotropic component yields global upper limits of Iγ/ICR (at 31 TeV) <1.2×10−2 and Iγ/ICR (at 53 TeV) <1.4×10−2 (at the 90% confidence level).  相似文献

On the basis of radial velocity and Hipparcos proper motion data, we have analyzed the galactic kinematics of classical Cepheids. Using the 3-D Ogorodnikov-Milne model we have determined the rotational velocity of the Galaxy to be V0 = 240.5 ± 10.2 km/s, on assuming a glactocentric distance of the Sun of R0 = 8.5 kpc. The results clearly indicate a contracting motion in the solar neighbourhood of (∂Vθ∂θ)/R = −2.60 ± 1.07 km s−1 kpc−1, along the direction of galactic rotation. Possible reason for this motion is discussed. The solar motion found here is S = 18.78 ± 0.86 km/s in the direction l = 54.4° ± 2.9° and b = +26.6° ± 2.6°.  相似文献

The Solar System dust bands discovered by IRAS are toroidal distributions of dust particles with common proper inclinations. It is impossible for particles with high eccentricity (approximately 0.2 or greater) to maintain a near constant proper inclination as they precess, and therefore the dust bands must be composed of material having a low eccentricity, pointing to an asteroidal origin. The mechanism of dust band production could involve either a continual comminution of material associated with the major Hirayama asteroid families, the equilibrium model (Dermott et al. (1984) Nature 312, 505–509) or random disruptions in the asteroid belt of small, single asteroids (Sykes and Greenberg (1986) Icarus 65, 51–69). The IRAS observations of the zodiacal cloud from which the dust band profiles are isolated have excellent resolution, and the manner in which these profiles change around the sky should allow the origin of the bands, their radial extent, the size-frequency distribution of the material and the optical properties of the dust itself to be determined. The equilibrium model of the dust bands suggests Eos as the parent of the 10° band pair. Results from detailed numerical modeling of the 10° band pair are presented. It is demonstrated that a model composed of dust particles having mean semimajor axis, proper eccentricity and proper inclination equal to those of the Eos family member asteroids, but with a dispersion in proper inclination of 2.5°, produces a convincing match with observations. Indeed, it is impossible to reproduce the observed profiles of the 10° band pair without imposing such a dispersion on the dust band material. Since the dust band profiles are matched very well with Eos, Themis and Koronis type material alone, the result is taken as strong evidence in favor of the equilibrium model. The effects of planetary perturbations are included by imposing the appropriate forced elements on the dust particle orbits (these forced elements vary with heliocentric distance). A subsequent model in which material is allowed to populate the inner solar system by a Poynting-Robertson drag distribution is also constructed. A dispersion in proper inclination of 3.5° provides the best match with observations, but close examination of the model profiles reveals that they are slightly broader than the observed profiles. If the variation of the number density of asteroidal material with heliocentric distance r is given by an expression of the form 1/rτ then these results indicate that γ < 1 compared with γ = 1 expected for a simple Poynting-Robertson drag distribution. This implies that asteroidal material is lost from the system as it spirals in towards the Sun, owing to interparticle collisions.  相似文献

The orbit of Intercosmos 13 rocket (1975-22B) has been determined at 103 epochs between 30 April 1975 and 10 April 1980 from almost 7000 observations. One hundred and three values of inclination have been determined and corrections incoporated for the effects due to zonal harmonic, lunisolar and tesseral harmonic perturbations, precession, and solid Earth tides. The modified data have been analysed to yield values of the atmospheric rotation rate, Λ rev day−1, viz. Λ = 0.94 ± 0.10 at an average height of 322 ± 6 km and Λ = 1.27 ± 0.02 at 288 km. Analysis of the inclination near 14th-order resonance has indicated lumped harmonic values 109 1.01.4 = − 76.13 ± 12.47, 109 1,014 = − 29.89 ± 32.64, 109 −1.214 = − 63.11 ± 15.44 109 −1.214 = − 32.52 ± 26.96, for inclination 82.952°.  相似文献

An M.F. radar (2.2 MHz) operating at Saskatoon, Canada (52°N, 107°W) has been used to produce continuous wind data ( 80–110km) from September 1978–April 1981. The 24-, 12-h tidal oscillations reveal regular summer-winter transitions; in particular the semi-diurnal tide demonstrates strikingly regular and rapid equinoctial changes over the three years. The vernal and autumnal equinox changes are clearly different in morphology. Shorter term tidal fluctuations (2d τ 10d) are compared with mean winds and gravity wave amplitudes, as well as with satellite-derived stratospheric temperatures.

Spectral analysis of monthly data sets for 1980, from 90–105 km, reveal oscillations of the expected 8-, 12-, 24-h periods, but also of 10-, 16- and 2-, 5/6d. A modulation of the “2-d” wave by the 12-h wave is suggested as a possible cause of these surprisingly regular oscillations.  相似文献

When the local solar zenith angle, χL, is < 105° the 6300 A line is much stronger than expected on the basis of F region ionic recombination alone. Between 95 and 105° the additional intensity is quantitatively explained by production of O(1D) from photolysis of O2 in the Schumann-Runge continuum, (λλ 1300–1750 A) using current values for solar flux, atmospheric composition and quenching of O(1D) by N2. The Schumann-Runge (SR) component exhibits a large seasonal variation with a maximum in summer. We interpret this variation as implying a seasonal change in thermospheric O2 abundance; the change seems largely to reflect a variation in O2 density at the base of the diffusive regime although some contribution may come from changes in thermospheric temperature structure. Large changes in the SR component exist from day to day and with a 27 day period following a major magnetic storm. The photodissociation source becomes inadequate when xl < 95°; at 90° more than half of the intensity comes from still another source which we identify as local photoelectron excitation of O atoms.  相似文献

The question of the association of quasars with galaxies is re-examined using 785 quasars at |b| 30, δ − 02°30′ in the new Hewitt and Burbidge Catalog (1980) and all galaxies in the “Uppsala General Catalogue of Galaxies” (Nilson, 1973). The results of the two-point cross-correlation function are presented and they show that there are on the average 0.153 ± 0.011 more galaxies within 10'.0 of a QSO than would be expected if the QSOs were distributed randomly. We find the marginal significance of the tendency for correlation between QSOs and galaxies to increase with increasing redshifts z or apparent magnitudes V. The nearest neighbor test has also been taken to analyse the same data as well as get further evidence for the apparent association between QSOs and galaxies.  相似文献

We have measured the absolute proper motions of 534 stars in a 1.5° × 1.5° region around the cluster M3, using 14 plates taken with a 40-cm refractor spanning 80 years. 24 stars in the ACT catalogue were used to define the reference frame and the reduction was made using the central overlapping technique. Using the new data, the membership probabilities were redetermined. The mean absolute motion of the cluster was found to be −0.3 ± 0.3 mas/yr in R.A., and −3.1 ± 0.3 mas/yr in declination. Combining the present data with the known distance and radial velocity, the three-dimensional galactic orbit of M3 was calculated for Allen's galactic potential.  相似文献

The existence of sidereal semidiurnal variation of cosmic-ray intensity in a rigidity region 102-103 GV has been reported by many researchers, but there is no consensus of opinion on its origin. In this paper, using the observed semidiurnal variations in a rigidity range (300–600 GV) with 10 directional muon telescopes at Sakashita underground station (geog. lat. = 36°, long. = 138°E, DEPTH = 80 m.w.e.), the authors determine the magnitudes (η1, η2) and directions (a1, a2) of the first- and second-order anisotropies in the following galactic cosmic-ray intensity distribution (j)

, where Pnis the nth order spherical function and χn is the pitch angle of cosmic rays with respect to an. For the determination, the influence of cosmic-ray's heliomagnetospheric modulation, geomagnetic deflection and nuclear interaction with the terrestrial material and also of the geometric configuration of the telescopes are taken into account. Usually, the semidiurnal variation is produced by the second-order anisotropy. The present observation, however, requires also the first-order anisotropy which usually produces only the diurnal variation, but can produce also the semidiurnal variation as a result of the heliospheric modulation. The first- and second-order anisotropies are characterized with η1) > 0 and η2 < 0 have almost the same direction (a1 a2) specified by the right ascension ( 0.75 h) and declination (δ 50°S) and, therefore, they can be expressed, as a whole, by an axis-symmetric anisotropy of loss-cone type (i.e. deficit intensities in a cone). It is noteworthy that this anisotropy approximately coincides with that inferred from the air shower observation at Mt Norikura in the rigidity region 104 GV.  相似文献

The distribution of meteor signals reflected from a backscatter radar is considered according to their duration. This duration time (T) is used to classify the meteor echoes and to calculate the mass index (S) of different meteoroids of shower plus sporadic background. Observational data on particle size distribution of the Geminid meteor shower are very scarce, particularly at low latitudes. In this paper the observational data from Gadanki radar (13.46°N, 79.18°E) have been used to determine the particle size distribution and the number density of meteoroids inside the stream of the Geminid meteor shower. The mean variation of meteor number density across the stream has been determined for three echo duration classes, T<0.4, T=0.4–1 and T>1 s. We are more interested in the appearance of echoes of various durations and therefore meteors of various masses in order to understand more on the filamentary structure of the stream. It is observed that the faint particle flux peaks earlier than the larger particles. We found a decreasing trend in the mass index values from the day of peak activity to the next observation days. The mass index profile was found to be U-shaped with a minimum value near the time of peak activity. The observed minimum s values are 1.64±0.05 and 1.65±0.04 in the years 2003 and 2005, respectively. The activity of the shower indicates the mass segregation of meteoroids inside the stream. Our results are best comparable with the “scissors” structure model of the meteoroid stream formation of Ryabova [2007. Mathematical modeling of the Geminid meteoroid stream. Mon. Not. R. Astron. We used the 13.7 m millimeter-wave telescope of the Qinghai Station of Purple Mountain Observatory at Delingha to carry out simultaneous mapping observations in the 12CO(J = 1 − 0), 13CO(J = 1 − 0) and CO18 (J = 1 − 0) lines towards 11 isolated star-forming molecular cores selected from the sample of Spitzer's c2d program. For all three lines, these sources were all observed to the positions of half the peak intensity of the 13CO(J = 1 − 0) line. The volume density, local thermodynamic equilibrium mass MLTE and virial mass MVIR were derived for each of the molecular cores. The obtained ratio of MVIR to MLTE is 0.85 ± 0.40 for the 13CO(J = 1 − 0) cores and 0.77 ± 0.35 for the CO18 (J = 1 − 0) cores. The density profiles of the cloud cores were also calculated.  相似文献

Ground-based arrays of imaging atmospheric Cherenkov telescopes have emerged as the most sensitive γ-ray detectors in the energy range of about 100 GeV and above. The strengths of these arrays are a very large effective collection area on the order of 105 m2, combined with excellent single photon angular and energy resolutions. The sensitivity of such detectors is limited by statistical fluctuations in the number of Cosmic-ray initiated air showers that resemble γ-ray air showers in many ways. In this paper, we study the performance of simple event reconstruction methods when applied to simulated data of the Very Energetic Radiation Imaging Telescope Array System (VERITAS) experiment. We review methods for reconstructing the arrival direction and the energy of the primary photons, and examine means to improve on their performance. For a software threshold energy of 300 GeV (100 GeV), the methods achieve point source angular and energy resolutions of σ63% = 0.1° (0.2°) and σ68% = 15% (22%), respectively. The main emphasis of the paper is the discussion of γ–hadron separation methods for the VERITAS experiment. We find that the information from several methods can be combined based on a likelihood ratio approach and the resulting algorithm achieves a γ–hadron suppression with a quality factor that is substantially higher than that achieved with the standard methods used so far.  相似文献

In this paper we analyse the observational data obtained by the Chinese-made PZT in the two periods 1979 Feb – 1980 May and 1981 Dec – 1983 March. The internal accuracy of single star is found to be mu = ±13.0 ms, mφ = ±0. “144 for the first period, and mu = ±14.6 ms, mφ = ±0.” 152 for the second. Correction of star position is found by the chain method. The systematic error caused by the sealed window of the evacuated chamber and the temperature effect of the plate scale are investigated. We discuss the capability of ‘100 GeV’ class imaging atmospheric Cherenkov telescope (IACT) arrays as future powerful instruments of ground-based gamma-ray astronomy. It is assumed that the array is gathered from individually triggered quadrangular 4-IACT ‘cells’ with a linear size of about 100 m. The multi-cell concept allows coverage of large detection areas economically, and at the same time the effective exploitation of the stereoscopic approach of determination of the shower parameters using information obtained by several IACTs simultaneously. Determination of arrival directions of γ-ray primaries on an event-by-event basis with accuracy δθ ≤ 0.1° combined with high suppression efficiency (at both the hardware and software levels) of the background hadronic showers by a factor of ≈ 103, and large, up to 1 km2 collection areas, can provide minimum detectable energy fluxes of ≥ 100 GeV γ-rays from point sources down to 10−13 erg/cm2 s which is about 3 orders of magnitude lower than the current sensitivities achieved by the satellite-borne detectors at MeV and GeV energies. High sensitivities of multi-IACT arrays would partially compensate the limited efficiency of the technique for all-sky surveys, as well as allow study of moderately extended (≤ 1°) γ-ray sources. IACT arrays with minimum detectable fluence of ≥ 100 GeV γ-rays Sγ < 10−8 erg/cm2 are well suited for effective exploration of highly sporadic nonthermal phenomena from different classes of astrophysical objects on time-scales from ≤ 1 s to several minutes.  相似文献

The orbit of Cosmos 268 rocket (1969-20B) has been determined at 28 epochs during its 342-day life, with the aid of the PROP5 orbit refinement program. All available observations were used, including 16 from the Hewitt camera at Malvern, 28 from the 200-mm camera at Meudon, 56 from the kinetheodolite at the Cape Observatory, 700 visual observations from volunteer observers, 500 US Navy observations and 200 British radar observations. The orbits are of very good accuracy for such a high-drag satellite, most of the values of inclination having standard deviations less than 0.002°. The most accurate orbits are those utilizing photographic observations, and the best of these has standard deviations of 0.00001 in eccentricity and 0.0001° in inclination.

The values of inclination obtained, after correction to allow for the effects of other perturbing forces, have been analysed to determine zonal wind speeds in the upper atmosphere at heights a little above perigee (230–250 km) averaged over latitudes up to about 25°. The results show a clear distinction between the wind at night (21 to 03 hr local time), which is west-to-east with an average speed of 140 ± 50 m/sec, and the wind by day (08 to 17 hr), which is east-to-west with an average speed of 110 ± 50 m/sec.  相似文献
