Survival of the tubicolous amphipodAmpelisca abdita in a sediment toxicity test was negatively correlated with the presence of indigenousNephtys incisa. The gut contents ofN. incisa held in uncontaminated sediment included identifiable portions of the amphipods.A. abdita andMicrodeutopus gryllotalpa. Although most nephtyid polychaete worms are active predators,Nephtys incisa has been considered a nonselective deposit-feeder. We coclude thatN. incisa will prey upon amphipods under laboratory conditions. This predation may be a factor in the exclusion of surface-dwelling amphipods from theNephtys-Nucula community common in southern New England.  相似文献

Throughout the last century, the Swedish coasts, have been exposed to climatic variation and human influence, and this has altered the biota in some areas. Diatoms and silicoflagellates in a periodically-laminated sediment core from Koljö Fjord (Swedish west coast) were examined to assess recent changes in the microalgal community. The most notable changes in the plankton occurred at the beginning of a long period of water column stratification in the fjord that extended from 1930 to 1980. The planktonic flora changed from a community dominated byBacterosira bathyomphala andThalassionema nitzschioides during the 1800s to a community dominated byDetonula confervacea, T. nitzschioides, andThalassiosira spp. after 1930. Silicoflagellates, were more abundant after 1940. Planktonic variations corresponded to oscillations in climate, hydrography, and weather, which determine water column stability in the fjord. The tychopelagic species,Paralia sulcata, was more abundant in unlaminated sections of the core, indicating preference for a vertically mixed water column. No direct effects of increased nutrient loading on the plankton could be established. Epiphytic diatoms show a period of decline from the 1950s to 1990s. This trend probably follows a shift in the macroalgal community to less-suitable host species. To what extent this pattern has been influenced or reinforced by humans cannot be determined at the present time. The results from Koljö Fjord, in particular the exploration of meteorological and physical oceanographic influences on algal dynamics, emphasize the importance of distinguishing between natural and humaninduced changes in the environment.  相似文献

This two-part study examined the benthic macrofaunal community in Delaware salt marsh impoundments having partial tidal restriction. The first part compared abundance, diversity, and taxonomic composition in three habitat types in impoundments—creeks, vegetated creek banks, and ponds—to those found in natural marshes. Impoundment effects were present but were habitat-specific. Abundances were higher in natural marsh creeks than in impoundment creeks, and diversities were higher in impoundment ponds than in natural marsh ponds. Vegetated bank communities in impoundments were about 50% insects and arachnids and 50% oligochaetes, while natural bank communities were primarily oligochaetes and the polychaeteManayunkia aestuarina. This is likely due to the decrease in flooding of the vegetated high marsh caused by partial impoundment. Pond and creek community composition also showed impoundment effects: in comparison with natural marshes, impoundments had higher proportions of the burrowing anemoneNematostella vectensis, nemerteans, andTubificoides sp. oligochaetes and lower proportions of the oligochaeteClitellio arenarius. The second part of the study compared benthic macrofauna in an impoundment before, during, and after the water level was lowered so that some bottom sediments were exposed and some covered with just a few centimeters of water for several weeks. During this event, macrofaunal abundances were reduced and the community shifted from being dominated by annelids, anemones, and nemerteans toward one dominated by annelids and insects. About 6 wk after reflooding, persistent effects of this disturbance were still suggested by greatly increased abundances and 96% dominance by one species of oligochaete,Paranais litoralis. Impoundment management plans calling for periods of sediment exposure or very low water may want to consider the potential for strong and persistent effects on the macrofaunal community.  相似文献

Marsh creation has come into increasing use as a measure to mitigate loss of valuable wetlands. However, few programs have addressed the functional ecological equivalence of man-made marshes and their natural counterparts. This study addresses structural and functional interactions in a man-made and two natural marshes. This was done by integrating substrate characteristics and marsh utilization by organisms of two trophic levels. Sediment properties, infaunal community composition, andFundulus heteroclitus marsh utilization were compared for a man-madeSpartina salt marsh (between ages 1 to 3 yr) in Dills Creek, North Carolina, and adjacent natural marshes to the east and west. East natural marsh and planted marsh sediment grain-size distributions were more similar to each other than to the west natural marsh due to shared drainage systems, but sediment organic content of the planted marsh was much lower than in either natural marsh. This difference was reflected in macrofaunal composition. Natural marsh sediments were inhabited primarily by subsurface, deposit-feeding oligochaetes whereas planted marsh sediments were dominated by the tube-building, surface-deposit feeding polychaetesStreblospio benedicti andManayunkia aestuarina. Infaunal differences were mirrored inFundulus diets. Natural marsh diets contained more detritus and insects, because oligochaetes, though abundant, were relatively inaccessible. Polychaetes and algae were major constituents of the planted marshFundulus diet. Though naturalmarsh fish may acquire a potentially less nutritive, detritus-based diet relative to the higher animal protein diet of the planted marsh fish,Fundulus abundances were markedly lower in the planted marsh than in the natural marshes, indicating fewer fish were being supported. LowerSpartina stem densities in the planted marsh may have provided inadequate protection from predation or insufficient spawning sites for the fundulids. After three years, the planted marsh remained functionally distinct from the adjacent natural marshes. Mitigation success at Dills Creek could have been improved by increasing tidal flushing, thereby enhancing, access to marine organisms and by mulching withSpartina wrack to increase sediment organic-matter content and porosity. Results from this study indicate that salt marshes should not be treated as a replaceable resource in the short term. The extreme spatial and temporal variability inherent to salt marshes make it virtually impossible to exactly replace a marsh by planting one on another site.  相似文献

Spatial and temporal variations in the abundances and distributions of oligochaetes of a southwestern Louisiana estuary were examined as part of a long term study of community structure of benthic macroinvertebrates. Quantitative samples were collected at monthly intervals from nine stations for two years and an additional 17 stations were sampled once. A tubificid oligochaete,Tubificoides denouxi n. sp., is described from the five species collected. The two predominant oligochaetes,Tubificoides heterochaetus andT. denouxi, were congeneric and exhibited completely allopatric distributions. Two oligochaete species with-restricted distributions,Monopylephorus helobius andLimnodriloides sp., were sympatric withT. denouxi, whileThalassodrilides belli, although less abundant, was sympatric with bothT. denouxi andT. heterochaetus. Sexually mature specimens ofT. denouxi andT. belli were collected only in the summer,T. heterochaetus was sexually mature in both winter and summer collections, andMonopylephorus helobius was sexually mature in spring and summer collections. Many of the studies of Oligochaeta have concluded that correlation exists between sediment grain size and species demography. Our data demonstrate a strong relationship between salinity and the abundance and distribution of estuarine species.Tubificoides denouxi was found only within the salinity range of 14.8 to 22.0‰ salinity,T. heterochaetus was found only within the range of 2.3 to 14.1‰, andT. belli had a salinity distribution intermediate between the previous species. No relationship was found between sediment grain-size analysis, water depth or hydrographic variables and species distribution.  相似文献

Examination of small-scale spatial variation in essential to understanding the relationships between environmental factors and benthic community structure in estuaries. A sampling experiment was performed in October 1993 to measure infauna association with sediment composition and salinity gradients in Nueces Bay, Texas, USA. The bay was partitioned into four salinity zones and three sediment types. Higher densities of macrofaua, were found in sediments with greater sand content and in areas with higher salinity. High diversity was also associated with high homogeneous salinity (31–33‰) and greater sand content. Macrofauna biomass and diversity were positively correlated with bottom salinity, porewater salinity, and bottom dissolved inorganic nitrogen (DIN). Furthermore, species dominance shifted along the estuarine gradient.Streblospio benedicti dominated at lower salinity, but,Mediomatsus ambiseta andMulinia lateralis were the dominant species at higher salinity. Statistical analyses revealed significant correlations for sediment characteristics (i.e., increased fine sediments, water content, and total organic carbon) with decreased total abundance and diversity. Increased salinity and DIN were correlated with increased total biomass, diversity, and macrofauma community structure. These physico-chemical variables are regulated by freshwater inflow, so inflow is an important factor influencing macrofauna community structure by indirectly influencing the physico-chemical environment.  相似文献

Predation on benthic polychaetes associated with seagrass beds was examined in laboratory and field predator inclusion experiments with one fish and three invertebrate predators. Predation had differential effects on polychaete taxa which depended on their microhabitat utilization patterns. The magnitude of predation effects strongly depended on the predator species, with the shrimpPenaeus duorarum having the greatest impact and the pinfishLagodon rhomboides the least. Abundance of spionid polychaetes, which are located near the sediment-water interface, was reduced most often by predation. Nereid and capitellid polychaete abundances were reduced by some predators and not by others. The results emphasize the need for more detailed natural history information on polychaete species in order to improve the interpretation of results from predation experiments.  相似文献

The hard clam Mercenaria mercenaria burrows deeper into the sediment when the predaceous sea star, Asterias forbesi is present. The supposition that this increase in burial depth represents an escape response designed to reduce predation was tested experimentally by regulating clam burial depth through manipulation of the amount of sediment available for burial. Mercenaria maintained at zero depth were eaten by Asterias at greater rates than those held at ordinary burial depths (2.5–3.0 cm). These clams in turn were eaten at greater rates than those maintained at escape depths (4.0–4.5 cm). The results unambiguously establish an anti-predator function for the burrowing response, as well as underscoring the protective function of the fossorial habit. They are not confounded by behavioral predator food preferences, inherent differences between prey species, or debilitating side effects of preventing prey from escaping. Mechanisms by which the burrowing response may reduce predation are discussed and observations on the unreported clam-digging behavior of Asterias forbesi are presented.  相似文献

The feeding habits of several fish species in a water reservoir of the Ria Formosa, Portugal, that has similar ecological characteristics to the outside tidal channels, were studied and compared with food availability. The gilthead seabream (Sparus aurata), the most abundant fish species, mainly selected gastropods and bivalves, although occasionally fish and small crustaceans such as tanaids, ostracods, and cumaceans were also selected. Polychaetes, although abundant in the environment, were not particularly selected by any of the fish species studied. The diets of all the species studied were characterized by a large variety of prey, allowing them to survive in environments of low diversity and poor stability, such as coastal lagoons. These fish are largely benthic feeders, essentially eating the epimacroinvertebrates and endomacroinvertebrates and, occasionally, fish.Diplodus vulgaris andDiplodus annularis preferentially selected gastropods and small crustaceans.Spondyliosoma cantharus generally preyed on crustaceans, including the highly mobile epifauma, the mysids, and decapods.Halobatrachus didactylus andAnguilla anguilla, had very diversified diets that included fish.Mullus barbatus were found to have selected all groups of crustaceans and also bivalves. Wrasses, gobies, andDiplodus sargus, all small-sized fish, singled out small crustaceans, gastropods, and bivalves. The Sparids were the least specialized predators, with broader niches than the other species. They preferentially selected molluscs, which were abundant in the environment. A large overlap of diets was observed and competition may be important when fish biomass is high.  相似文献

The European green crab (Carcinus maenas) is a highly successful marine invader, having established populations in a number of areas outside its natural range in the last 100 years. In South Australia,C. maenas can be abundant on intertidal mud flats, which are used by juveniles of the native blue swimmer crab (Portunus pelagicus) and could have the potential to cause substantial negative effects on this species. The influence of adult blue and green crabs on habitat selection by juvenile blue crabs was tested to determine if they responded to both predators in a similar fashion. The presence of predators did not influence habitat selection by juvenile blue crabs in either laboratory or field experiments, but juvenile behavior in the selected habitat did differ between the two adult species. Many more crabs buried themselves beneath the substrate when adult conspecifics were present than when adult green crabs were present. Burying in the presence of adult green crabs was no more frequent than when predators were absent. It remains to be determined if this makes juvenile blue crabs more vulnerable to predation by green crabs than by adults of their own species, or if the difference in response is because green crabs pose a different or lesser threat.  相似文献

The benthic fauna of a small cove of the Hudson River containing the aquatic plantMyriophyllum spicatum L. was studied for a one-year period. The fauna was characteristic of oligohaline zones of United States east coast estuaries. Total abundance of invertebrates retained on a 0.12 mm mesh sieve averaged 124,631 organisms m?2 (sediment and plant populations combined) and ranged up to 196,000 m?2. During the May–August period, invertebrates living on the plants comprised 16–35% of the invertebrate fauna in the cove. Chironomid larvae were the most abundant organisms on plants and the third most abundant in the sediments. Two assemblages of chironomid species were recognized; one lived solely in the sediments, the other lived primarily on the plants.Chironomus decorus andTanytarsus sp. dominated the former group andCricotopus sylvestris the latter. The chironomidDicrotendipes modestus utilized both habitats. During the May–August period, chironomid biomass on the plants comprised approximately 50% of total chironomid biomass in the cove. The mean dry-weight biomass of chironomids in the cove (1.6 g m?2) is estimated to be sixteen times greater than that of the fauna in the deeper areas of the river. Because chironomid larvae are eaten by fish and invertebrates, shallow water regions with their rich chironomid (and other fauna) may contribute importantly to the trophic dynamics of estuarine systems. *** DIRECT SUPPORT *** A01BY009 00004  相似文献

A benthic annular flume for both laboratory and in situ deployment on intertidal mudflats is described. The flume provides a means of quantifying material flux (i.e., biodeposition of suspended particulates, sediment resuspension, nutrients, oxygen, and contaminants) across the sediment-water interface in relation to changes in current velocity and benthic community structure and/or population density of key macrofauna species. Flume experiments have investigated the impact of the infaunal bivalveMacoma balthica and the epifaunal bivalveMytilus edulis on seston and sediment flux at the sediment-water interface. The bioturbatorMacoma was found to increase the sediment resuspension and/or erodability by 4-fold, at densities similar to those recorded at the Skeffling mudflat (Humber estuary) (i.e., >1000 individuals m?2). There was a significant correlation between sediment resuspension andMacoma density (r=0.99; p<0.001), which supported previous in situ field observations indicating bioturbation byMacoma enhanced sediment erodability. Biodeposition rates (g m?2 h1) ofMytilus edulis andCerastoderma edule were quantified and related to changes in population density in a mussel bed (Cleethorpes, Humber estuary). Biodeposition rates were up to 40-times the natural sedimentation rates. At the highest mussel bed densities (i.e., 50–100% cover or >1400 mussels m?2) the physical presence of this epifaunal bivalve on the sediment surface reduced erosion by 10-fold. The shift from net biodeposition to net erosion occurred at current velocities of 20–25 cm s?1. These results demonstrate that infaunal and epifaunal bivalves can have a significant impact on seston flux or sediment deposition and on sediment resuspension or erodability in estuaries where there are extensive mudflats.  相似文献

Leporids (Lagomorpha, Mammalia), especially the mountain hare (Lepus timidus) and the European rabbit (Oryctolagus cuniculus), have been among the most abundant small game in western Europe since the Pleistocene. These animals are preferred prey for more than 40 predators, which increases the chances of finding their skeletal remains at archaeological or natural sites, and in particular karstic formations alternately occupied by Palaeolithic human societies and other predators. Moreover, specific eco-ethological characteristics for both species also offer the possibility to produce a substantial quantity of their bones accumulated by natural mortality without predation, making it more difficult to identify their origin in the fossil record. Despite this fact, the taphonomic signature of accidental-natural accumulations of leporids in karsts, such as pitfalls, has never been properly characterised. In order to address these issues, we carried out a detailed taphonomic study of leporid remains in a pitfall without any evidence of human activity, namely at Coulet des Roches (Monieux, Vaucluse, south-eastern France). At this site, leporids are the most abundant species throughout the Last Glacial Maximum sedimentary sequence. The bone accumulation was analysed in order to determine the most relevant criteria to identify a natural accumulation that results from the accidental fall of individuals in the pitfall. The relative proportions of each species are consistent with their current ethology, and their mortality profiles are compatible with the structure of a living natural population. The completeness rate of the different skeletal portions for both species is relatively high, bones are less fragmented and, unlike what might be expected, very few anatomical connections were preserved. The observed anatomical representation, breakage, and bone surface modification patterns are discussed and compared with available data concerning accumulations with predation. Taken together, the identified criteria contribute valuable help in the recognition of accidental mortality in the fossil record, as well as to evaluate the proportion of leporid bones accumulated naturally and those accumulated by predation, human or not, in a deposit.  相似文献

The flatfish community of the Sado estuary was studied based on beam trawl catches in six sampling areas. Temperature and salinity were recorded during surveys and sediment composition was determined at each sampling area. A total of 12 species were identified (1 Bothidae, 1 Pleuronectidae, and 10 Soleidae).Dicologoglossa hexophthalma (Bennett 1831),Microchirus ocellatus (Linnaeus 1758), andSynaptura lusitanica (Capello 1868) were new records to this estuarine system.Monochirus hispidus Rafinesque, 1814, was the most abundant species (about 80% of the total individuals caught). Community structure reflected both spatial and temporal patterns. A longitudinal abundance pattern was noticed with some species much more abundant in outer estuarine areas, namelyM. hispidus, Arnoglossus laterna (Walbaum 1792), andBuglossidium luteum (Risso 1810), while others, such asSolea solea (Linnaeus 1758) andSolea senegalensis Kaup, 1858, presented the highest densities in inner areas. Besides temperature and salinity gradients, species distribution was also influenced by sediment composition. Seasonal variation was mainly determined by the different periods of juvenile peak abundance according to the species which emphasize the role of the estuary as a nursery ground for several flatfish species.  相似文献

We experimentally evaluate the effect of migratory shorebirds on the benthic fauna of three southwestern Atlantic Argentinean stop-over and wintering sites: Bahía Samborombon (35°30′–36°22′S, 57°23′W), Mar Chiquita coastal lagoon (37°40′S, 57°26′W), and Bahía Blanca (38°48′–39°25′S, 50°–62°25′W). The experiments consisted of exclusion ceilings and controls (both 1 m2), with 10 replicates each and aligned at the same tidal level. During December 1994–May 1995 these experiments were done, twice in Bahía Samborombon, twice at two sites (Sotelo and Celpa) 4 km apart in Mar Chiquita coastal lagoon, and three times in Bahía Blanca. Three polychaete species (Laeonereis acuta, Nephtys fluviatilis, andHeteromastus similis) were found in similar densities in both areas of the Mar Chiquita lagoon.L. acuta andN. fluviatilis were affected in Sotelo, but there was no treatment effect in Celpa. In Sotelo the most abundant shorebirds were Hudsonian godwit (Limosa haemastica), American golden plover (Pluvialis dominica), and White-rumped sandpiper (Calidris fuscicollis), and in Celpa the most abundant shorebirds were White-rumped sandpiper, two-banded plower (Charadrius falklandicus), and lesser yellowlegs (Tringa flavipes). The largest polychaete densities were in the upper sediment layer (0–6 cm), which was also the most affected layer. Three polychaete species were found in Bahía Samborombon (L. acuta, H. similis, andNeanthes succinea), but onlyH. similis showed a treatment effect. The most abundant shorebirds in Samborombon were white-rumped sandpiper and two-banded plover. No effect was detected in Bahía Blanca, where the most abundant shorebirds were white-rumped sandpiper and American golden plover. In all cases, the species affected by shorebirds were the most abundant species. From the two sites of Mar Chiquita, there was a treatment effect only in Sotelo, which was also the area with higher shorebirds counts. However, much lower densities observed in Samborombon (similar to the unaffected area of Mar Chiquita) also produced a significant decrease in infaunal abundance. These evidences also suggest that just selection of study sites may produce different views of the interaction between shorebirds and benthic species.  相似文献

Habitat-related densities of natant macrofauna were compared between vegetated and nonvegetated areas in aSpartina alterniflora marsh on Galveston Island, Texas. The most abundant macrofauna were crustaceans,Palaemonetes pugio, Penaeus aztecus, Penaeus setiferus, andCallinectes sapidus, and small fish,Gobiosoma bosci, Lagodon rhomboides, Leiostomus xanthurus, Fundulus similis andMicropogonias undulatus. Excluding residentsP. pugio, G. bosci andF. similis, most of the macrofauna were transient juveniles of estuarine-dependent species. Among crustaceans,P. pugio, P. aztecus, andC. sapidus were significantly more dense in vegetated habitat, butP. setiferus was not consistently more abundant in either vegetated or nonvegetated habitat. Of 29 species of fishes, 14 were usually in vegetation, 11 were more often on nonvegetated bottom, and 5 were indifferent to either habitat. Much seasonal variability in abundances ofP. aztecus, P. setiferus, andC. sapidus, but notP. pugio, could be attributed to changes in temperature, salinity and water-level. Strong selection for vegetated habitat byP. aztecus was related to the historical water-level pattern coinciding with seasonal periods of marsh flooding. Apparently, high seasonal tides during the spring and fall facilitated access to vegetated habitat in the marsh and exploitation by transientP. aztecus. In contrast, strong selection for vegetation byP. pugio, abundant year-around in the marsh, was not similarly influenced by seasonal changes in water-level. Overall, habitat-related densities and physical interactions suggest that marsh physiography together with differences in tides may greatly determine the extent to which certain estuarine macrofauna utilize marsh habitats.  相似文献

The density of the Carolina marsh clam,Polymesoda caroliniana (Bosc), was determined in three adjacent tidal marsh communities which differed only in plant species composition. Clam density was inversely related to the density (biomass) of plant roots and rhizomes in sediments and directly related to density of plant stems (numbers). Clam abundance was not related to the basal area of plant stems. Each plant community contained clams of various ages from juvenile to adult indicating continued recruitment and survival. These data suggest thatP. caroliniana is most abundant inJuncus roemerianus marshes because there are fewer roots and rhizomes (mean of 2.5 kg m?2) to hamper burrwing as compared toSpartina alterniflora andcynosuroides (5.1 and 6.3 kg m?2, respectively) dominated marshes. Salinity, floding frequency, distance from flooding water, and sediment type were essentially constant among the three plant communities. Root/rhizome density should be collected along with other environmental parameters during studies of benthic organisms on marshes because it potentially limits the occurrence or abundance of some species.  相似文献

The vertical distribution of infauna was quantified in eight strata from 0–35 cm in sand and mud sediments of a lower mesohaline subestuary of Chesapeake Bay. Large numbers of small polychaetes, amphipods, and clams occurred in the upper 5 cm of both sediment types, whereas large clams (Macoma balthica in mud andMya arenaria in sand) extended down to 30 cm and comprised most of the biomass in their respective sediment types. There was extensive overlap of the species inhabiting both sediment types. Vertical stratification within and among species apparently reflected constraints on burrowing depth related to body size rather than resource partitioning among competitors. The maximal sediment penetration of 35 cm, which was exhibited byHeteromastus filiformis, was considerably less than the maximal penetration for deep burrowing species in some marine infaunal communities. Several species which burrowed deeper than 5 cm exhibited significant temporal shifts in their vertical distribution.  相似文献

Predation is likely the primary source of mortality for juvenile penaeid shrimp and, therefore, a key factor driving their population dynamics. We sampled juvenile penaeids and their potential predators in a salt marsh from July to August 2012 to examine the impact of these predators and possible size-selective predation on the shrimp population. We quantified predator impact using the frequency of occurrence (FO) index and a relative predation index (RPI) that accounts for predator abundance and the number of shrimp consumed per individual predator. Size selectivity was assessed by comparing the size distribution of shrimp in the study area to the size distribution of shrimp removed from predator stomachs. Two penaeid species, white shrimp Litopenaeus setiferus and brown shrimp Farfantepenaeus aztecus, were collected, and most (86%) were juvenile white shrimp ≤?12 mm carapace length. Spotted seatrout Cynoscion nebulosus, which consumed relatively large shrimp, was the most important predator based on the FO index. Bay whiff Citharichthys spilopterus, which ate the smallest shrimp, was the most important predator based on the RPI. The size distribution of shrimp removed from predator stomachs differed from those collected in the study area; the smallest shrimp were disproportionally more abundant in predator stomachs. Using the RPI, we identified some potentially important predators (e.g., bay whiff) that may impact shrimp populations by consuming the smallest shrimp in estuarine nurseries. Our approach could be useful for examining predator impacts on other populations of juvenile penaeids and more generally for any prey consumed by fish predators.  相似文献

Setty and Nigam (1980) had described 72 species of benthonic foraminifers from 25 inner shelf stations off central West Coast of India and the results showed somewhat patchy and anamolous distributions. This paper presents the results ofQ-mode factor analysis, which was applied to reduce the number of variables into assemblages. The analysis reveals 4 important foraminiferal assemblages.Ammonia beccarii—Ammonia annectens assemblage,Nonion boueanum—Florilus scaphum assemblage.Trochammina inflata assemblage andBulimina exilis assemblage. They can be related to freshwater run-off and organic matter contents of the sediment.  相似文献
