Summary. A novel 3-axis superconducting magnetometer has been constructed using just one SQUID (Superconducting Quantum Interference Device) sensor. The magnetometer has been placed in a large mu-metal shield together with a non-magnetic oven and 3-axis af demagnetizer. Once a sample is entered into the system a microprocessor controller executes a predetermined measuring and demagnetizing/remagnetizing sequence. The system was originally designed automatically to determine field magnitude values from ceramics and igneous rocks but has proved itself to be a useful general purpose palaeomagnetic instrument.  相似文献

Laboratory studies of depositional DRM   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3
Summary. Acquisition of magnetic remanence in slurries of fme grained organic muds settling in long tubes is investigated using a cryogenic magnetometer. The average settling behaviour of remanence carrying grains relative to the whole sediment gives information about the relative magnetic grain size spectrum, whereas the response of settled deposits to vibration gives an indication of the degree of alignment of particles and their average shape.
Two classes of behaviour are apparent in both the time and field dependence of detrital remanent magnetization (DRM) acquisition. Dilute slurries settling in the Earth's field (analogous to detrital sedimentation) acquire a remanence which reaches a maximum after about 2 day, whereas for concentrated slurries (analogous to slumped or bioturbated sediments) this takes only a matter of minutes. The field dependence of DRM in dilute slurries is in plausible quantitative agreement with Stacey's extension of the classical Langevin expression for the susceptibility of a paramagnetic gas, whereas concentrated slurries show a quasi-linear dependence of DRM on the applied field. Inclination errors are generally absent, but do appear in fields less than about 0.5 Oe, and when the magnetic fraction settles out preferentially. A weak negative dependence of DRM on temperature is found, but the results are too crude to provide a further test of Stacey's theory.
Remanence acquisition in slurries settled in zero field indicates that short term post-depositional magnetization processes are relatively unimportant in slurries that have ceased to compact rapidly. A large increase in remanence from naturally occurring sediments to slowly redeposited long cores, to rapidly settled slurries is best explained as a feature of compaction.  相似文献

A newly developed field distribution measuring system based on a high- T c SQUID has been employed in the study of magnetic mineral distribution in several Permian sedimentary rocks. The instrument consists of a small, 1.4×1.4 mm sized YBaCu-oxide SQUID magnetic field sensor that is operated in a thin-walled dewar, so that the sample's surface, at room temperature, can be scanned at a distance of only ∼1.5 mm. The samples were subjected to a saturation remanence perpendicular to the surface and the scanning measurements in zero field reveal that the magnetization might be carried by only a small part of a sample, in one case associated with secondary oxide phases. High-resolution magnetic scans can aid in the interpretation of the magnetic remanence acquisition process.  相似文献

A magnetic study was carried out on lacustrine sediments from the Zoigê basin, Tibetan Plateau, in order to obtain a better understanding of palaeoclimatic changes there. Gyromagnetic remanence (GRM) acquisition is unexpectedly observed during static three-axis alternating field (AF) demagnetization in about 20 per cent of a large number of samples. X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis on a magnetic extract clearly shows that greigite is the dominant magnetic mineral carrier. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) reveals that the greigite particles are in the grain size range of 200–300  nm, possibly in the single-domain state. Greigite clumps of about 3  μm size are sealed by silicates. Fitting of XRD peaks yields a crystalline coherence length of about 15  nm, indicating that the particles seen in the SEM are polycrystalline.
GRM intensities of most samples are of the same order as the NRM, while others show much stronger GRM although their magnetic properties are similar. Variation of the demagnetization sequence confirms that GRM is mainly produced perpendicular to the AF direction. The anisotropy direction can be derived from GRM, but more systematic studies are needed for detailed conclusions. An attempt to correct for GRM failed due to high GRM intensities and because smaller GRM acquisition was also found along the demagnetization axis. Behaviours of acquisition and AF demagnetization of GRM are comparable with those of NRM, ARM, IRM, indicating fine grain sizes of remanence carriers.  相似文献

Results of the first detailed study of the climate proxy record in the loess-palaeosol sequence at Xining-one of the few palaeoclimate sites in the currently arid western Loess Plateau of China-illustrate the importance of making many types of rock-magnetic measurements other than susceptibility. A multiparameter approach yielded confirmation that here, as elsewhere in the Loess Plateau, the susceptibility enhancement in palaeosols was caused primarily by ultrafine magnetite and maghaemite. Nevertheless, magnetic enhancement was caused not exclusively by changes in relative grain size, but also by variations in concentration and mineralogy of the magnetic fraction.
The effects of concentration variations were removed through normalization of susceptibility and anhysteretic remanence with saturation magnetization and saturation remanence, respectively. the resulting signal was ascribed more confidently to variation in magnetic grain size, which in turn was interpreted as a better proxy of pedogenesis than simple susceptibility. Variations in magnetic mineralogy were also determined to constrain interpretations further. the data were then used to discuss climate history at Xining. Finally, results from Xining were compared with other western sites and contrasted with eastern sites.
In summary: (1) data is presented from a new Loess Plateau site which also appears to yield a global climate signal; (2) a demonstration is made of a more rock-magnetically robust way to separate concentration, composition and grain-size controls on susceptibility and other magnetic parameters; and (3) models are provided for inter-regional comparisons of palaeoclimate proxy records.  相似文献

Summary. A record of geomagnetic field polarity for the Barremian, Aptian and Albian stages of the Early Cretaceous has been derived in three over-lapping sections of pelagic carbonate rocks in the Umbrian Apennines of northern Italy. The remanence carrier in the greyish-white Majolica limestone and Fucoid Marls is magnetite, with haematite also an important constituent in a zone of 'couches rouges' within the Fucoid Marls. The weak remanent magnetizations were measured with a cryogenic magnetometer. Alternating field or thermal demagnetization was used to isolate the characteristic remanent magnetization (ChRM) in 655 specimens from 248 stratigraphic levels. The samples respond positively to a tectonic fold test, indicating that the ChRM predates the Late Tertiary folding of the Umbrian sequence. The magnetic stratigraphy derived from variations of virtual geomagnetic pole latitude clearly defines the recognizable reversal pattern associated with Mesozoic marine magnetic anomalies M0 to M4. The sections have been zones palaeontologically on the basis of planktonic foraminifera and calcareous nannofossil assemblages. The ages of magnetic anomalies M0 to M4 determined in this way are somewhat older than those in the reversal time scale of Larson & Hilde (1975). Anomaly M0 is located in the Early Aptian, close to the Aptian/Barremian boundary. A long period of normal polarity in the Aptian and Albian corresponds to the early part of the Cretaceous magnetic quiet zone. It is interrupted in the Late Aptian by a reversal which we find in only one of the Fucoid Marl sections, and which has not been reported in oceanic magnetic anomaly investigations.  相似文献

Mineral magnetic signatures in a long core from Lake Qarun, Middle Egypt   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
The analysis and interpretation of changes in mineral magnetic signatures from a long (ca. 8.2 m) sedimentary sequence recovered from Lake Qarun, Middle Egypt in 2003 spanning a timescale of approximately the last 2,000 years is reported. A suite of mass specific susceptibility and magnetic remanence measurements were made at irregular intervals downcore on 39 samples. These samples were selected on the basis of trends and abrupt changes in whole-core magnetic susceptibility measured using a Bartington® MS2E sensor and were analysed for low and high temperature loss on ignition and their particle size distribution. Trends in all mineral magnetic concentration parameters are remarkably similar and were initially used to divide the core into three magnetically distinct zones. The upper and lower sections of the core (0–119 cm and 445–822 cm depth) are characterised by low values for all magnetic concentration parameters. Between 153 and 380 cm depth, concentration parameters are considerably higher, although somewhat variable. The S ratio and percentage loss of remanence after 24 h (IRMloss) follow a different trend and are inversely related to each other. A low S ratio (<0.7) is associated with a loss of remanence of >4%. On the basis of these parameters, the core can be divided into four zones, and differences in magnetic mineralogy between these four zones were confirmed by measurement of IRM acquisition curves. The major difference between concentration parameters and ratios or percentage loss of IRM lies in the identification of an additional zone below 619 cm depth where the S ratio is high and IRMloss is low. There is little evidence to suggest that the magnetic signatures are controlled by particle size or by trends in organic matter and/or carbonate content. The signatures appear to be predominantly detrital and show little evidence of post-depositional alteration through dissolution or authigenic addition of bacterial magnetite or greigite. Analysis of Saharan dust deposition rates in Northern Egypt suggests that atmospheric fallout is likely to make only a very minor contribution (<1%) to sedimentation rates in Lake Qarun. The downcore trends therefore appear to reflect major changes in fluvial sediment sources over the ca. 2,000 year time period spanned by this ~8 m core. Preliminary mineral magnetic characterisations of potential local sources suggest that these cannot account for the range of signatures recorded in the Qarun sediments and it is hypothesised that these sediments are derived from Nile river floods.  相似文献

Recent conceptual models have attributed the weak depositional remanent magnetizations observed in natural sediments to flocculation processes in the water column. Magnetic particles included into flocs have not only to rotate themselves into alignment with the geomagnetic field but also the larger particles to which they are attached, making remanence acquisition an inefficient process. Alignment is hindered further when the magnetization vectors of the particles in any given floc partially cancel, reducing the overall magnetic torque. Existing numerical simulations of flocculation effects on depositional remanence formation have been limited to spherical bodies with translational and rotational motion acting independently of each other. In the case of non-spherical flocs, the translational and rotational motion are coupled and such bodies will describe a complex trajectory through the water column. Calculations will be presented that show the torque exerted on a non-spherical floc by the surrounding water can be orders of magnitude greater than the magnetic torque. Non-spherical flocs will, therefore, align less efficiently with the geomagnetic field and hydrodynamic effects may play an important role in controlling the magnitude of sedimentary remanence.  相似文献

Experiments involving the gradual drying out of controlled mixtures of soil and organic lake sediment during storage at room temperature show that this leads to a loss of magnetic susceptibility and isothermal remanence greatly in excess of the initial values for the sediment components of the mixtures. We conclude that during storage in the moist state, soil-derived, fine-grained, ferrimagnetic iron oxides (magnetite and/or maghemite) are transformed to paramagnetic and/or imperfect antiferrimagnetic minerals. The imperfect anti-ferromagnetic component of the initial mixtures, which probably includes goethite, appears to survive and may even increase during storage. The experimental results compare well with the previously documented effects of storing wet sediment from the site, Peckforton Mere, Cheshire, U.K., over a comparable time interval. We conclude that transformation of fine grained ferrimagnets during storage diagenesis may be responsible for many of the examples of loss of magnetic susceptibility and remanence attributed by other authors solely to the oxidation of an iron sulphide such as greigite. Only where greigite is positively identified is it valid to infer a contribution from it to the magnetic properties of lake sediments: loss of susceptibility or remanence during storage is not alone a sufficient basis for such an inference. Early drying of samples will normally avoid the effects of storage diagenesis; and recent sediment samples so treated will, where greigite formation, bacterial magnetite and magnetite dissolution are insignificant, provide a valid basis for source identification on the basis of magnetic properties.  相似文献

Unmixing magnetic remanence curves without a priori knowledge   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Many of the natural materials studied in rock and environmental magnetism contain a mixed assemblage of mineral grains with a variety of different origins. Mathematical decomposition of the bulk magnetic mineral assemblage into populations with different properties can therefore be a source of useful environmental information. Previous investigations have shown that such unmixing into component parts can provide insights concerning source materials, transport processes, diagenetic alteration, authigenic mineral growth and a number of other processes. A new approach will be presented that performs a linear unmixing of remanence data into coercivity based end-members using only a minimal number of assumptions. A non-negative matrix factorization (NMF) algorithm for unmixing remanence data into constituent end-members is described with case studies to demonstrate the utility of the approach. The shape of the end-members and their abundances obtained by NMF is based solely on the variation in the measured data set and there is no requirement for mathematical functions or type curves to represent individual components. Therefore, in contrast to previous approaches that aimed to unmix curves into components corresponding to individual minerals and domain states, NMF produces a genetically more meaningful decomposition showing how a data set can be represented as a linear sum of invariant parts. It has been found that the NMF algorithm performs well for both absolute and normalized remanence curves, with the capacity to process thousands of measured data points rapidly.  相似文献

As part of the Ant-Plane project for summertime scientific research and logistics in the coastal region of Antarctica, we developed six types of small autonomous UAVs (unmanned aerial vehicles, similar to drones; we term these vehicles ‘Ant-Planes’) based on four types of airframe. In test flights, Ant-Plane 2 cruised within 20 m accuracy along a straight course during calm weather at Sakurajima Volcano, Kyushu, Japan. During a period of strong winds (22 m/s) at Mt. Chokai, Akita Prefecture, Japan, Ant-Plane 2 maintained its course during a straight flight but deviated when turning leeward. An onboard 3-axis magneto-resistant magnetometer (400 g) recorded variations in the magnetic field to an accuracy of 10 nT during periods of calm wind, but strong magnetic noise was observed during high winds, especially head winds. Ant-Plane 4-1 achieved a continuous flight of 500 km, with a maximum flight altitude of 5690 m. The Ant-Plane can be used for various types of Antarctic research as a basic platform for airborne surveys, but further development of the techniques employed in takeoff and landing are required, as well as ready adjustment of the engine and the development of small onboard instruments with greater reliability.  相似文献

A palaeomagnetic study of the Elgee Formation red siltstones and shales in the Palaeoproterozoic Kimberley Basin of northwestern Australia has been carried out. All seven sampling sites revealed an extremely stable magnetic remanence carried by haematite. The age of the formation is confined by precise SHRIMP U–Pb ages of early diagenetic xenotime from rocks both above and below it to be 1704 + 7/−14 Ma, but this may represent a minimum age. The youngest detrital zircon grains in the underlying formation provide a maximum age of 1786 ± 14 Ma for the formation. The extreme stability of the remanence, the dissimilarity of the remanent direction from expected younger palaeomagnetic directions, and the lack of regional overprint in the 1790 ± 4 Ma Hart Dolerite just north of the study region support a primary origin for the remanence. A marginally positive fold test also supports a primary origin. The mean direction of D = 92.2°, I = 14.9°, α 95 = 6.4° gives a palaeopole at 4.4°S, 210.0°E with dp = 3.3°, dm = 6.5°. This pole, a previously reported palaeopole from the Hart Dolerite and ca. 1700 Ma overprint poles from the Pilbara Craton all agree with palaeopoles of similar ages from the McArthur Basin of northern Australia. Palaeomagnetic results thus suggest that the North and West Australian cratons were possibly joined together by approximately 1.7 Ga.  相似文献

Repeated laboratory-induced weak mechanical shocking ( c .  0.57  kg  m  s1 ) of marine sandstone samples showing drilling-induced remanence, from commercial bore cores from the North Sea and Prudhoe Bay, causes increases in their low-field susceptibility ( χ ) and their ability to acquire an isothermal remanent magnetization (IRM). These enhancements are reduced by some 20 per cent by AF demagnetization in 100  mT. Doubling the intensity of the shock doubles the susceptibilities and IRMs acquired. The susceptibility increase ceases after 300 to 400 shocks for the North Sea samples and 20 to 30 shocks for those from Prudhoe Bay, while the IRM saturates after 800–1000 and 30–50 shocks respectively. Continental, haematite-bearing sandstones from commercial bore cores with no drilling-induced remanence subjected to the same shocks do not show these effects. Differences in the magnetic mineralogy of shocked and unshocked marine samples suggest that the magnetic enhancement is predominantly due to the creation of pyrrhotite by shock-induced irreversible crystallographic changes in iron-bearing sulphides. When shocked during commercial drilling, these new ferromagnetic minerals acquire strong chemical (crystalline) remanences, associated with a wide spectrum of grain sizes, in the magnetic field of the drill string, and these are resistant to both thermal and AF demagnetization. Similar processes are likely in any situation involving the shock of physically metastable iron-bearing minerals, particularly anoxic sediments. A 5  cm non-magnetic collar between the drill stem and crown should drastically reduce the magnetic intensity of this effect under commercial conditions, but would not prevent its occurrence.  相似文献

Summary. Palaeomagnetic studies require a theory of magnetization mechanism of sediments and a method of estimating magnetic field intensity from their remanences. This paper establishes a physical basis for the generation of the remanence in deep-sea and lake sediments experimentally.
Redeposition experiments have been carried out under centrifugal force in weak magnetic fields. The centrifuging method produces post-depositional remanent magnetization (post-DRM) in the compacted sediment, and its remanence and susceptibility are compatible with those of natural sediments and reconstituted materials of other redepositional experiments. Three properties of the post-DRM have been deduced from the experiments: (1) the efficiency of acquisition of post-DRM decreases with increase in density during the compaction process, (2) the total post-DRM is equal to the sum of the partial post-DRM (addition law), and (3) time is not a substantial factor for alignment of the magnetic particles. These results lead to the conclusions that the magnetic particles do not rotate steadily but in a series of steps, and that the density change is the crucial factor giving rise to the post-DRM.
A mathematical formula representing the remanence record in sediments is proposed on the basis of the experimental results and the model. The principal equation is expressed as an integral of the product of three parameters over time when sediments have been compacted; the field intensity variation, characteristic function of the sediment and the time derivative of the density change.  相似文献

Summary. Continuous recordings were made of thermal demagnetizations of Isr, ARM and TRM induced in artificial rock specimens. The artificial rock specimens contained well-defined grain-size fractions of a natural titanomagnetite, which under an optical microscope was homogeneous. Using a Transmission Electron Microscope it was shown that submicroscopic inclusions exist within the titanomagnetite. Screening of the remanence of these inclusions by the surrounding titanomagnetite is thought to be responsible for the occurrence of 'peaks' in the continuous thermal decay curves of Isr and ARM; higher 'peaks' observed in the case of TRM are thought to be caused by the combined effects of screening and an anti-parallel remanence in the titanomagnetite. Further submicroscopic exsolution processes, which occur in the titanomagnetite as a result of repeated heating, can be deduced from the development of new 'peaks', from changes in the temperature at which the 'peak(s)'occur, their shape and their relative height. The use of stepwise demagnetization techniques on the titanomagnetite yielded erroneous directional results due to the screening in the titanomagnetite; the biasing effects due to screening could be avoided by using continuous thermal demagnetization techniques.  相似文献

Summary. This paper describes the magnetic remanence and susceptibility anisotropy of 42 samples of laminated clay from Peak Cavern. The sediments are shown to have acquired a stable remanent magnetization due to the depositional alignment of magnetite grains. The magnetic fabric data confirm the existence of alteration within a reddened surface layer. A record of geomagnetic secular variation in the underlying clay is compared to a dated lake sediment magnetostratigraphy to suggest that deposition occurred around 7000 yr bp . A method for estimating water current directions based on the remanence and magnetic fabric data is critically assessed before deducing the sense of palaeoflow in the cave.  相似文献

Satellite magnetometers sometimes pass through regions of plasma, such as the terrestrial ionosphere, where the ionization is large enough that some of the original ambient field is excluded from the plasma. This reduction of field inside the plasma region comes from the 'diamagnetic' effect of the charged particles in their helical trajectory around the magnetic field lines. The (container of the) magnetometer will exclude the plasma, and a simple-minded approach, treating the ionosphere in the same way as for a conventional diamagnetic fluid, predicts that the field seen by the magnetometer will be somewhat larger than the (reduced) field in the plasma. However, the 'diamagnetic' properties of the ionosphere are quite different from those of a conventional diamagnetic. In particular, there is a 'reflection' of the ionospheric charged particles at the surface of the magnetometer, and the overall effect is that the magnetometer does actually measure the field present in the plasma before the magnetometer is inserted. Similarly, any leakage fields from the magnetometer have no effect in the magnetosphere.  相似文献

A record of normal-reversed-polarity transition has been obtained from a 4 m thickness of loess exposed at a section near Lanzhou, China. Magnetostratigraphic studies suggest it may represent a reversal bounding the onset of a reversed-polarity zone within the Jaramillo Normal Subchron. The natural remanent magnetization consists of two components: a low-coercivity (≤20mT), low-unblocking-temperature (≤300°C) component of viscous origin and a high-coercivity (>20mT), high-unblocking-temperature (250–700 °C) component carrying the characteristic remanence. Mineral magnetic analyses confirmed the presence of magnetite, its low-temperature oxidation products and haematite, each contributing to the remanence properties. Grain size and concentration showed limited variations and there was little evidence for the presence of the ultrafine magnetic phase commonly associated with palaeosol formation. Pedogenic processes appeared negligible and their effects unimportant, with detrital processes dominating the mineralogy and most probably the acquisition of the characteristic remanence. The reversal record was characterized by the decay and recovery of the geocentric axial dipole term with large directional swings occurring during periods of reduced relative palaeofield intensity. The virtual geomagnetic poles traced a complex path exhibiting no particular geographical confinement. Relative palaeofield intensity determinations were insensitive to the choice of normalization parameter and showed a distinctive asymmetry. Striking similarities were observed with the Matuyama-Jaramillo reversal record, obtained from the same section (Rolph 1993), and the Steens Mountain reversal record (Prévot el al. 1985), lending further support for the existence of unusually high post-transitional field intensities  相似文献

Palaeomagnetic results are presented from a volcanic sequence in Zhijin County, Guizhou Province, Southern China. The lavas and associated volcanic breccias comprising the sequence represent a southern extension of the Emeishan volcanic province. Biostratigraphic dating of interbedded limestone units and stratigraphic constraints indicate that the section formed during the late Permian (∼263–255  Ma), and is thus somewhat older than the Emei stratotype section in Sichuan Province, and close in age to reported estimates of the termination of the Permo-Carboniferous (Kiaman) reverse superchron. Rock magnetic analyses and reflected light microscopy indicate that the magnetic mineralogy of the lava units is dominated by fresh, primary magnetites containing a significant fraction of single-domain grains. Thermal demagnetization behaviour of the breccia units is poor, but most lava samples have one or two components of remanence above 250 °C. The normal polarity characteristic remanence held by the lavas implies a post-Kiaman age for this succession and suggests that the termination of the Kiaman occurred prior to 263  Ma, supporting recently published estimates. According to standard criteria, Thellier palaeointensity results from the lavas are of good quality and reveal that the dipole field strength was comparatively low shortly after the termination of the superchron. 80 per cent of samples record relative VDM values in the range 42–52 per cent of the present-day value, supporting recent studies of mid-Kiaman field intensity. This suggests that a low-energy dipole existed at least between 300 and 255  Ma and does not appear to have been confined to the stable reverse polarity interval.  相似文献
