The NASA Ames HIFOGS spectrometer observed comet C/1995 O1 (Hale-Bopp) at epochs including 96 Oct 7–14 UT (2.8 AU), 97 Feb 14–15 UT (1.2 AU), 97 Apr 11 UT (0.93 AU), and 97 Jun 22, 25 UT (1.7 AU). The HIFOGS 7.5–13.5 μm spectrophotometry (R = 360 - 180) of the silicate feature at 2.8 AU is identical in shape to the ISO SWS spectra of comet Hale-Bopp (Crovisier et al., 1997); the strong 11.2 μm peak in the structured silicate feature is identified as olivine. Upon close passage to the sun, the HIFOGS spectra at 1.2 AU and 0.93 AU reveals strong peaks at 9.3 μm and 10.0 μm. The post-perihelion 10 μm silicate feature at 1.7 AU is weaker but has nearly the same shape as the pre-perihelion spectra at 1.2 AU, reverting to its pre-perihelion shape: there is no change in the dust chemistry by close passage to the sun. The appearance of the strong peaks at 9.3 μm and 10.0 μm at rh ≲ 1.7 AU is attributed to the rise in the contribution of pryoxenes (clino-pyroxene and orthopyroxene crystals) to the shape of the feature, and leads to the hypothesis that the pyroxenes are significantly cooler than the olivines. The pyroxenes are radiating on the Wien side of the blackbody at 2.8 AU and transition to the Rayleigh-Jeans tail of the blackbody upon closer approach to the Sun. Composite fits to the observed 10 μm silicate features using IDPs and laboratory minerals shows that a good empirical fit to the spectra is obtained when the pryoxenes are about 150 K cooler than the olivines. The pyroxenes, because they are cooler and contribute signficantly at perihelion, are more abundant than the olivines. The perihelion temperature of the pyroxenes implies that the pyroxenes are more Mg-rich than the other minerals including the olivines, amorphous olivines, and amorphous pyroxenes. The PUMA-1 flyby measurements of comet P/Halley also indicated an overabundance of Mg-rich pryoxenes compared to olivines. Comet Hale-Bopp's pyroxenes are similar to pyroxere IDPs from the ’Spray‘ class, known for their D-richness and their unaltered morphologies: Hale-Bopp's Mg-rich pyroxenes may be pristine relic ISM grains. The dust coma of comet Hale-Bopp was observed in the thermal infrared over a wide range in solar heating (R = 4.9–0.9 AU) and over the full wavelength range from 3 μm to 160 μm. Unusual early activity produced an extensive coma containing small warm refractory grains; already at 4.9 AU, the 10 μm silicate emission feature was strong and the color temperature was 30% above the equilibrium blackbody temperature. Near perihelion the high color temperature, strong silicate feature, and high albedo indicated a smaller mean grain size than in other comets. The 8–13 μm spectra revealed a silicate emission feature similar in shape to that seen in P/Halley and several new and long period comets. Detailed spectral structure in the feature was consistent over time and with different instruments; the main peaks occur at 9.3, 10.0 and 11.2 μm. These peaks can be identified with olivine and pyroxene minerals, linking the comet dust to the anhydrous chondritic aggregate interplanetary dust particles. Spectra at 16–40 μm taken with the ISO SWS displayed pronounced emission peaks due to Mg-rich crystalline olivine, consistent with the 11.2 μm peak. We describe 5 to 18 μm broadband images and R ∼ 100 spectra of comet Hale-Bopp taken with SpectroCam-10 on the 5 m Hale telescope during six runs between 1996 June and 1997 April. Our data show the gradual warming of dust grains as the comet approached perihelion. In June, the 10 μm silicate emission feature was already stronger than observed in any other comet, and it increased to about 3 times the continuum level near perihelion. Spectral structure attributed to a crystalline olivine grain component remained relatively constant, but other features associated with pyroxenes appeared to vary with heliocentric distance. Spectra of comet C/1995 O1 (Hale-Bopp) were obtained with the Infrared Space Observatory (ISO) at medium resolution with the grating spectrometer in the photometer (PHT-S) and/or at high resolution with the short wavelength spectrometer (SWS) and long wavelength spectrometer (LWS) in April 1996 (Crovisier et al., 1996), September–October 1996 (Crovisier et al., 1997a, b) and December 1997, at distances from the Sun of 4.6, 2.9 and 3.9 AU, respectively. For the first time, high-resolution spectra of a comet covering the entire 2.4 to 200 μm spectral range were obtained. The vibrational bands of H2O, CO2 and CO are detected in emission with PHT-S. Relative production rates of 100:22:70 are derived for H2O:CO2:CO at 3 AU pre-perihelion. H2O is observed at high spectral resolution in the ν3 group of bands around 2.7 μm and the ν2 group around 6 μm with SWS, and in several rotational lines in the 100–180 μm region with LWS. The high signal-to-noise ratio of the ν3 band observed on September–October 1996 allows accurate determinations of the water rotational temperature (28 K) and of its ortho-to-para ratio(2.45 ± 0.10, which significantly differs from the high temperature limit and corresponds to a spin temperature of 25 K). Longward of 6 μm the spectrum is dominated by dust thermal continuum emission, upon which broad emission features are superimposed. The wavelengths of the emission peaks correspond to those of Mg-rich crystalline olivine (forsterite). In the September–October 1996 spectra, emission features at 45 and 65 μm and possible absorption at 2.9–3.2 μm suggest that grains of water ice were present at 3 AU from the Sun. The observations made post-perihelion in late December 1997 led to the detections of H2O, CO2 and CO at 3.9 AU from the Sun (Figures 1 and 2). The production rates were ≈3.0 × 1028,3.5 × 1028 and ≈1.5 × 1029 s-1, respectively. This corresponds to H2O:CO2:CO = 100:110:500 and confirms that at such distances from the Sun, cometary activity is dominated by sublimation of CO and CO2 rather than by H2O. We present a new set of diagnostics which allow us to trace and classify in a statistical manner the mid-IR emission produced by active galactic nuclei (AGN) and star-forming regions. We construct a diagram based on the strength of the unidentified infrared band (UIB)at 6.2 μm, and the intensity of the continuum at short (6 μm) and long wavelengths (15 μm). We interpret the integrated mid-IR emission in late-type galaxies as resulting from three individual contributions coming from HII regions, diffuse/photodissociation regions (PDRs), and AGN. Based on this assumption, our diagnostic diagram provides a quantitative estimate of the AGN and starburst contribution to an observed mid-IR spectrum. We show that UIB emission is very faint or absent in regions harbouring intense and hard radiation fields as in the case of AGN or ‘pure’ HII starburst regions where UIB carriers can be destroyed by photodissociation. However, contrary to starburst spectra, typical AGN spectra present a strong hot continuum below 9 μm originating from hot dust heated by the AGN radiation field. An extrapolation of this diagnostic towards other mid-IR observations should improve our knowledge of the AGN/starburst connection. We present near infrared reflectance spectra from 0.8 to 2.5 μm of two asteroids with low Tisserand invariant, 1373 Cincinnati and 2906 Caltech. We compare our spectra with cometary nuclei and other asteroids in their class. Asteroids Cincinnati and Caltech have Tisserand invariant values of 2.72 and 2.97, respectively, values less than 3 are considered suggestive of cometary origin. The observed spectral slopes in the near-infrared are consistent with both the spectra of cometary nuclei and of primitive asteroids. However, both asteroids have features in the near-infrared that are not seen in cometary nuclei, but are present in other X-type asteroids. 1373 Cincinnati has a sharp slope change between 0.75 and 1.0 μm and 2906 Caltech has a broad and shallow absorption between 1.35 and 2.2 μm. Our attempts to model the visible and near-infrared spectrum of these two objects, with the components successfully used by Emery and Brown (2004, Icarus 164, 104–121) to fit Trojan asteroids, did not yield acceptable fits.Visiting Astronomer at the Infrared Telescope Facility, which is operated by the University of Hawaii under contract to the National Aeronautics and Space Administration.  相似文献

The three-satellite SIGNE network has observed 26 confirmed gamma-ray bursts in the period September 1978–June 1979. Burst time histories may be used to define several classes of events, with a strong resemblance between events in a given class, but different arrival directions. The spectra of two gamma-ray bursts have been found to evolve from shapes which turn over at low energy during the start of the event, to near power law spectra at the end of the event.Paper presented at the Symposium on Cosmic Gamma-Ray Bursts held at Toulouse, France, 26–29 November, 1979.  相似文献

A sample of 230 galaxies has been compiled based on their IRAS FSC fluxes to study their multiwavelength properties and carry out comparative analyses with other similar samples. To understand the nature of these galaxies, a comparison with a sample of bright ULIRGs having fluxes at 60 μm  > 1 Jy and 14 optically faint IRAS FSC galaxies is presented. This comparison shows that galaxies found by IRAS are not always strong infrared sources and that the objects from the sample of ULIRGs represent a sample of extreme galaxies, which are very powerful infrared sources. We have confirmed the consistency between Star Formation Rates (SFRs) calibrated based on luminosities of the PAH feature at 7.7 μm and radio 1.4 GHz flux densities. We have estimated the extinction for our 230 objects using SFRs calibrated from the PAH feature compared to ultraviolet flux, which shows that only 1% of the ultraviolet continuum typically escapes extinction by dust within a starburst.  相似文献

A new sample of extra-Galactic radio sources having a peak in the continuous spectrum near 1 GHz has been compiled, using data available in the literature on their radio flux densities, and some characteristic parameters of radio sources in this sample have been calculated. The median value of the calculated spectral indices of radio sources in the sample is -0.95, the median flux density at the peak (Sm) is 465 mJy, and almost half the radio sources (14 out of 30) have ultrasteep spectra, for which the spectral indices in the high-frequency range are α <-1.0 (S ∝ vα). During the recent apparition of comet Hale—Bopp (1995 O1) near infrared photometric observations were carried out in the J, H, K filter bands and also in the 3.0—3.4 μm region at the 1.2 m telescope at Gurushikkar, India. The effective temperature of the comet was substantially higher than the equilibrium blackbody temperature. A mean superheat value of 1.83 was derived in the post-perihelion phase which implies that a large fraction of the grain population are made up of small and hot grains with radii <0.5 μm. High albedo values of ∼0.4 were also derived in the scattering angle range 135° to 160° which could explain the unusual brightness of comet Hale—Bopp. This revised version was published online in July 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.  相似文献

The imminent return of the Genesis Sample Return Capsule (SRC) from the Earth’s L1 point on September 8, 2004, represents the first opportunity since the Apollo era to study the atmospheric entry of a meter-sized body at or above the Earth’s escape speed. Until now, reentry heating models are based on only one successful reentry with an instrumented vehicle at higher than escape speed, the 22 May 1965 NASA “FIRE 2” experiment. In preparation of an instrumented airborne and ground-based observing campaign, we examined the expected bolide radiation for the reentry of the Genesis SRC. We find that the expected emission spectrum consists mostly of blackbody emission from the SRC surface (T∼ ∼2630 K@peak heating), slightly skewed in shape because of a range of surface temperatures. At high enough spectral resolution, shock emission from nitrogen and oxygen atoms, as well as the first positive and first negative bands of N2+, will stand out above this continuum. Carbon atom lines and the 389-nm CN band emission may also be detected, as well as the mid-IR 4.6-μm CO band. The ablation rate can be studied from the signature of trace sodium in the heat shield material, calibrated by the total amount of matter lost from the recovered shield. A pristine collection of the heat shield would also permit the sampling of products of ablation.  相似文献

We present a first analysis of a deep X-ray spectrum of the isolated neutron star RBS1223 obtained with XMM-Newton. Spectral data from four new monitoring observations in 2005/2006 were combined with archival observations obtained in 2003 and 2004 to form a spin-phase averaged spectrum containing 290 000 EPIC-pn photons. This spectrum shows higher complexity than its predecessors, and can be parameterised with two Gaussian absorption lines superimposed on a blackbody. The line centers, E 2≃2E 1, could be regarded as supporting the cyclotron interpretation of the absorption features in a field B∼4×1013 G. The flux ratio of those lines does not support this interpretation. Hence, either feature might be of truly atomic origin.   相似文献

Using an Infrared photometer with InSb photovoltaic detector at the 182cm Copernicus telescope of the Asiago Observatory, Italy, we have measured theJHKL’ M magnitudes of 12 IRC sources 7 of which are very late type stars with [ICIT -K] greater than 5 magnitudes. These data have been fitted to blackbody distributions to obtain their effective temperatures. The present data, in combination with other available photometric data at longer wavelengths seems to indicate excess emission at 11 μm from sources 10066, 10510 and 10234, and at 19.8 μm from source 20052. The source 60098 shows extreme infrared colours. Work carried out when the first author was a guest scientist at Max Planck-Institut für Extraterrestrische Physik,Garching FRG.  相似文献

A follow-up survey using the Submillimetre High-Angular Resolution Camera (SHARC-II) at 350 μm has been carried out to map the regions around several 850-μm-selected sources from the Submillimetre HAlf Degree Extragalactic Survey (SHADES). These observations probe the infrared (IR) luminosities and hence star formation rates in the largest existing, most robust sample of submillimetre galaxies (SMGs). We measure 350-μm flux densities for 24 850-μm sources, seven of which are detected at ≥2.5σ within a 10 arcsec search radius of the 850-μm positions. When results from the literature are included the total number of 350-μm flux density constraints of SHADES SMGs is 31, with 15 detections. We fit a modified blackbody to the far-IR (FIR) photometry of each SMG, and confirm that typical SMGs are dust-rich  ( M dust≃ 9 × 108 M)  , luminous  ( L FIR≃ 2 × 1012 L)  star-forming galaxies with intrinsic dust temperatures of ≃35 K and star formation rates of  ≃400 M yr−1  . We have measured the temperature distribution of SMGs and find that the underlying distribution is slightly broader than implied by the error bars, and that most SMGs are at 28 K with a few hotter. We also place new constraints on the 350-μm source counts, N 350(>25 mJy) ∼ 200–500 deg−2.  相似文献

Laboratory infrared emission and absorption spectra have been taken of terrestrial silicates, meteorites and lunar soils in the form of micrometer and sub-micrometer grains. The emission spectra were taken in a way that imitates telescopic observations. The purpose was to see which materials best simulate the 10 m astrophysical feature. The emission spectra of dunite, fayalite and Allende give a good fit to the 10 m broadband emission feature of comets Bennett and Kohoutek. A study of the effect of grain size on the presence of the 10 m emission feature of dunite shows that for particles larger than 37 m no feature is seen. The emission spectrum of the Murray meteorite, a Type 2 carbonaceous chondrite, is quite similar to the intermediate resolution spectrum of comet Kohoutek in the 10 m region. Hydrous silicates or amorphous magnesium silicates in combination with high-temperature condensates, such as olivine or anorthite, would yield spectra that match the intermediate resolution spectrum of comet Kohoutek in the 10 m region. Glassy olivine and glassy anorthite in approximately equal proportions would also give a spectrum that is a good fit to the cometary 10 m feature.Invited contribution to the Proceedings of a Workshop onThermodynamics and Kinetics of Dust Formation in the Space Medium held at the Lunar and Planetary Institute, Houston, 6 8 September, 1978.  相似文献

High energy gammay–ray emission from an extended region between the squasars 3C273 and 3C279 in Virgo has been detected by the Energetic Gamma Ray Experiment Telescope (EGRET) on the Compton Gamma Ray Observatory(CGRO). This emission shows a remarkably constant flux over an observation time of years between June 1991 and December 1993. The data analysis shows, that the structure is not the result of an instrumental effect. The object has a perfect power law photon spectrum with index α=-2.06 ± 0.05 which is different from the spectra of the neighboring quasars 3C273 and 3C279. Integration of the spectrum leads to a flux estimation of (7.0± 0.3) × 10-7 γ cm-2s-1 above 100 MeV. No galactic or extragalactic counterpart is found at other wavelengths. Indications point, however, at an extragalactic origin of the gamma radiation. This revised version was published online in July 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.  相似文献

The white light during M dwarf flares has long been known to exhibit the broadband shape of a T≈10 000 K blackbody, and the white light in solar-flares is thought to arise primarily from hydrogen recombination. Yet, a current lack of broad-wavelength coverage solar flare spectra in the optical/near-UV region prohibits a direct comparison of the continuum properties to determine if they are indeed so different. New spectroscopic observations of a secondary flare during the decay of a megaflare on the dM4.5e star YZ CMi have revealed multiple components in the white-light continuum of stellar flares, including both a blackbody-like spectrum and a hydrogen-recombination spectrum. One of the most surprising findings is that these two components are anti-correlated in their temporal evolution. We combine initial phenomenological modeling of the continuum components with spectra from radiative hydrodynamic models to show that continuum veiling causes the measured anti-correlation. This modeling allows us to use the components’ inferred properties to predict how a similar spatially resolved, multiple-component, white-light continuum might appear using analogies to several solar-flare phenomena. We also compare the properties of the optical stellar flare white light to Ellerman bombs on the Sun.  相似文献

We present the Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE) photometric data of 158 Fermi-detected BL Lacs and investigate the nature of their mid-infrared (MIR) continuum emission. In the [3.4]-[4.6]-[12] μm color–color diagram, nearly all their colors lie within the WISE Blazar strip (WBS), which is an effective diagnostic tool to separate sources dominated by non-thermal radiation from those dominated by thermal radiation. This feature indicates that their MIR emission is predominantly non-thermal. This argument is further supported by the strong radio-MIR flux correlation. We derive their MIR spectral indices and compare them with the near-infrared (NIR) spectral indices. We find that there is a prevalent steepening from MIR spectrum to NIR spectrum. The low-frequency-peaked BL Lacs (LBLs) have on average a larger MIR spectral index and a higher MIR luminosity than the high-frequency-peaked BL Lacs (HBLs), and the intermediate-frequency-peaked BL Lacs (IBLs) appear to bridge them. The MIR-γ-ray flux correlation is highly significant. A strong positive correlation is also found between the MIR and γ-ray spectral indices. The γ-ray-MIR loudness is significantly correlated with the synchrotron peak frequency. Finally we propose that the γ-rays are highly associated with the MIR emission from the jet, and the γ-ray emission is likely from the synchrotron self-Compton process for the Fermi-detected BL Lacs in our sample.  相似文献

Motivated by the various examples of spatial variability in the power of the acoustic spectrum, we attempted to look for spatial variability in the peak frequency of the spectrum. However, the determination of this peak frequency on a spatial scale of a single pixel (8 arc sec for the GONG data) is limited by the stochastic variations in the power spectrum presumably caused by the stochastic nature of the excitation process. Averaging over a large number of spectra (100 spectra from a 10 × 10 pixel area) produced stabler spectra. The peak frequencies of 130 such locations were found to be distributed with a FWHM of about 130 Hz. A map of the spatial variation of this peak frequency did not show any strong feature with statistically significant deviation from the mean of the distribution. Likewise, the scatter in the peak frequencies masked the detection of magnetic-field-induced changes in the peak frequency. On a much larger scale, the N latitudes showed a slightly lower value of the peak frequency as compared to the S latitudes, although the difference (25 Hz) is barely larger than the r.m.s. spread (20 Hz).  相似文献

We report XMM-Newton observations of the isolated neutron star RBS1774 and confirm its membership as an XDINS. The X-ray spectrum is best fit with an absorbed blackbody with temperature kT=101 eV and absorption edge at 0.7 keV. No power law component is required. An absorption feature in the RGS data at 0.4 keV is not evident in the EPIC data, but it is not possible to resolve this inconsistency. The star is not seen in the UV OM data to m AB ∼21. There is a sinusoidal variation in the X-ray flux at a period of 9.437 s with an amplitude of 4%. The age as determined from cooling and magnetic field decay arguments is 105–106 yr for a neutron star mass of 1.35–1.5 M.   相似文献
