We present the results of a 22-cm radio survey carried out with the Australia Telescope Compact Array (ATCA) covering the A3558 complex, a chain formed by the merging ACO clusters A3556–A3558–A3562 and the two groups SC 1327−312 and SC 1323−313, located in the central region of the Shapley Concentration. The purpose of our survey is to study the effects of cluster mergers on the statistical properties of radio galaxies and to investigate the connection between mergers and the presence of radio haloes and relic sources.
We found that the radio source counts in the A3558 complex are consistent with the background source counts. The much higher optical density compared with the background is not reflected as a higher density of radio sources. Furthermore, we found that no correlation exists between the local density and the radio source power, and that steep-spectrum radio galaxies are not segregated in denser optical regions.
The radio luminosity function for elliptical and S0 galaxies is significantly lower than for cluster early-type galaxies and for those not selected to be in clusters at radio powers log P1.4 ≳22.5, implying that the probability of a galaxy becoming a radio source above this power limit is lower in the Shapley Concentration compared with any other environment. Possible explanations will be presented.
The detection of a head–tail source in the centre of A3562, coupled with careful inspection of the 20-cm NRAO VLA Sky Survey (NVSS) and of 36-cm MOST observations, allowed us to spot two extended sources in the region between A3562 and SC 1329−313, i.e. a candidate radio halo at the centre of A3562 and low brightness extended emission around a 14.96-mag Shapley galaxy. The relation between these two extended galaxies and the ongoing group merger in this region of the Shapley Concentration are discussed. 相似文献

We report and discuss the results of a 22-cm radio survey carried out with the Australia Telescope Compact Array (ATCA) covering the A3528 complex, a chain formed by the merging ACO clusters A3528–A3530–A3532 , located in the central region of the Shapley Concentration. Simultaneous 13-cm observations are also presented. Our final catalogue includes a total of 106 radio sources above the flux density limit of 0.8 mJy. By cross-correlation with optical and spectroscopic catalogues we found 32 optical counterparts, nine of them belonging to the A3528 complex.

We present a combined analysis of the BeppoSAX and ROSAT PSPC observation of the cluster of galaxies A3562, a massive member of the core of the Shapley supercluster. With a complex and interacting structure composed from two groups of galaxies and A3558 to the west, the surface brightness of A3562 shows excess in the sectors to east and south when compared with an azimuthally averaged model of the emission. The emission tends to be flatter, and the distribution of the gas broader, along the merging axis and in opposition to the two groups. We present the first determination of the gradients of the gas temperature and metallicity for a cluster in the Shapley region at large distance from the cluster centre. From an analysis of the BeppoSAX data in annuli and sectors, we observe both the profiles to be flat within 8 arcmin (∼0.62 Mpc), with emission-weighted values of kT =5.1±0.2 keV and Z =0.39±0.05 Z⊙ . The value of the temperature is consistent with recent ASCA measurements and is significantly higher than previous estimates obtained from ROSAT and EXOSAT . We discuss the possible reasons for this disagreement. Between 8 and 20 arcmin, the plasma temperature declines to about 3.2 keV. When a polytropic profile is used to represent the gas temperature profile, the best-fitting polytropic index is 1.16±0.03. These results imply a total mass within the virial radius of between 40 and 80 per cent lower than the optical estimate, and a gas mass fraction of about 30 per cent. 相似文献

We present a detailed study of the morphological features of 22 rich galaxy clusters. Our sample is constructed from a cross-correlation of optical data with X-ray (0.1–2.4 keV) ROSAT pointed observations. We systematically compare cluster images and morphological parameters in an attempt to reliably identify possible substructure in both optical and the X-ray images. To this end, we compute various moments of the optical and X-ray surface-brightness distribution such as the ellipticities, centre-of-mass shifts and ellipsoidal orientations. We assess the significance of our results using Monte Carlo simulations. We find significant correlations between the optical and X-ray morphological parameters, indicating that in both parts of the spectrum it is possible to identify correctly the dynamical state of a cluster. Most of our clusters (17/22) have a good one-to-one correspondence between the optical and the X-ray images, and about 10 appear to have strong indications of substructure. This corresponds to a minimum percentage of order ∼45 per cent, which is in very good accordance with other similar analyses. Finally, five out of 22 systems (∼22 per cent) seem to have distinct subclumps in the optical which are not verified in the X-ray images, and thus are suspect of being due to optical projection effects. These results will serve as a useful guide in interpreting subsequent analyses of large optical cluster catalogues. 相似文献

We studied and compared the radial profiles of globular clusters and of the stellar bulge component in three galaxies of the Fornax cluster observed with the WFPC2 of the Hubble Space Telescope ( HST ). The stars are more concentrated toward the galactic centres than globular clusters, in agreement with what has already been observed in many other galaxies: if the observed difference is the result of evolution of the globular cluster systems starting from initial profiles similar to those of the halo–bulge stellar components, a relevant fraction of their initial mass (74, 47 and 52 per cent for NGC 1379, 1399 and 1404, respectively) should have disappeared in the inner regions. This mass has probably contributed to the nuclear field population, local dynamics and high-energy phenomena in the primeval life of the galaxy. An indication in favour of the evolutionary interpretation of the difference between the globular cluster system and stellar bulge radial profiles is given by the positive correlation we found between the value of the mass lost from the globular cluster system and the central galactic black hole mass in the set of seven galaxies for which these data are available. 相似文献

As part of an extensive radio–IR–optical–X-ray study of ROSAT clusters of galaxies in the Hydra region we have observed the bimodal Abell cluster A3528, located in the core of the Shapley Supercluster ( z ≃ 0.053), with the Molonglo Observatory Synthesis Telescope at 843 MHz and the Australia Telescope Compact Array at 1.4 and 2.4 GHz. This is part I in a series of papers which looks at the relationship between the radio and X-ray emission in samples of ROSAT selected clusters. The radio source characteristics — tailed morphologies and steep spectra — are consistent with the effects of a dense intracluster medium and the pre-merging environment of A3528. In particular, we present evidence that the minor member of the radio-loud dumbbell galaxy located at the centre of the northern component of A3528 is on a plunging orbit. We speculate that this orbit may have been induced by the tidal interactions between the merging components of A3528. In addition, the radio source associated with the dominant member of the dumbbell galaxy exhibits many of the characteristics of compact steep spectrum sources. We argue that the radio emission from this source was triggered ∼ 106 yr ago by tidal interactions between the two members of the dumbbell galaxy, strengthening the argument that compact steep spectrum (CSS) sources are young. Re-analysis of archive pointed Position Sensitive Proportional Counter (PSPC) data using multiresolution filtering suggests the presence of an AGN and/or a cooling flow in the southern component of A3528. 相似文献

We apply the stochastic model of iron transport developed by Rebusco et al. to the Centaurus cluster. Using this model, we find that an effective diffusion coefficient D in the range 2 × 1028 –4 × 1028 cm2 s−1 can approximately reproduce the observed abundance distribution. Reproducing the flat central profile and sharp drop around 30–70 kpc , however, requires a diffusion coefficient that drops rapidly with radius so that D > 4 × 1028 cm2 s−1 only inside about 25 kpc . Assuming that all transport is due to fully developed turbulence, which is also responsible for offsetting cooling in the cluster core, we calculate the length- and velocity-scales of energy injection. These length-scales are found to be up to a factor of ∼10 larger than expected if the turbulence is due to the inflation and rising of a bubble. We also calculate the turbulent thermal conductivity and find it is unlikely to be significant in preventing cooling. 相似文献

We present indications of rotation in the galaxy cluster A2107 by a method that searches for the maximum gradient in the velocity field in a flat disc-like model of a cluster. Galaxies from cumulative subsamples containing more and more distant members from the cluster centre are projected on to an axis passing through the centre and we apply a linear regression model on the projected distances x and the line-of-sight velocities V . The axis with the maximum linear correlation coefficient r max = max[ r ( V , x )] defines the direction of the maximum velocity gradient, and consequently it presents the major axis of the apparently elliptical cluster. Because the effects of rotation are subtle, we put strong emphasis on the estimation of the uncertainties of the results by implementing different bootstrap techniques. We have found that rotational effects are more strongly expressed at distances of 0.26–0.54 Mpc from the cluster centre. The total virial mass of the cluster is (3.2 ± 0.6) × 1014 M⊙ , while the virial mass, corrected for rotation, is (2.8 ± 0.5) × 1014 M⊙ . 相似文献

We study the globular cluster (GC) system of the dust-lane elliptical galaxy NGC 6702, using B -, V - and I -band imaging observations carried out at the Keck telescope. This galaxy has a spectroscopic age of ≈2 Gyr suggesting recent star formation. We find strong evidence for a bimodal GC colour distribution, with the blue peak having a colour similar to that of the Galactic halo GCs. Assuming that the blue GCs are indeed old and metal-poor, we estimate an age of 2–5 Gyr and supersolar metallicity for the red GC subpopulation. Despite the large uncertainties, this is in reasonable agreement with the spectroscopic galaxy age. Additionally, we estimate a specific frequency of S N =2.3±1.1 for NGC 6702. We predict that passive evolution of NGC 6702 will further increase its specific frequency to S N ≈2.7 within 10 Gyr, in closer agreement to that of typical present-day ellipticals. We also discuss evidence that the merger/accretion event that took place a few Gyr ago involved a high gas fraction. 相似文献

In this Letter, we use the recent Chandra observation of Abell 2142 reported by Markevitch et al. to put constraints on thermal conduction in the intracluster plasma. We show that the observed sharp temperature gradient requires that classical conductivity has to be reduced at least by a factor of between 250 and 2500. The result provides a direct constraint on an important physical process relevant to the gas in the cores of clusters of galaxies. 相似文献

We report subarcsec-resolution X-ray imaging of the core of the Perseus cluster around the galaxy NGC 1275 with the Chandra X-ray Observatory . The ROSAT -discovered holes associated with the radio lobes have X-ray bright rims which are cooler than the surrounding gas and not a result of shocks. The holes themselves may contain some hotter gas. We map strong photoelectric absorption across the northern lobe and rim owing to a small infalling irregular galaxy, known as the high-velocity system. Two outer holes, one of which was previously known, are identified with recently found spurs of low-frequency radio emission. The spiral appearance of the X-ray cooler gas and the outer optical parts of NGC 1275 may be due to angular momentum in the cooling flow. 相似文献

Using metallicities from the literature, combined with the Revised Bologna Catalogue of photometric data for M31 clusters and cluster candidates [the latter of which is the most comprehensive catalogue of M31 clusters currently available, including 337 confirmed globular clusters (GCs) and 688 GC candidates], we determine 443 reddening values and intrinsic colours, and 209 metallicities for individual clusters without spectroscopic observations. This, the largest sample of M31 GCs presently available, is then used to analyse the metallicity distribution of M31 GCs, which is bimodal with peaks at [Fe/H]≈−1.7 and −0.7 dex. An exploration of metallicities as a function of radius from the M31 centre shows a metallicity gradient for the metal-poor GCs, but no such gradient for the metal-rich GCs. Our results show that the metal-rich clusters appear as a centrally concentrated spatial distribution; however, the metal-poor clusters tend to be less spatially concentrated. There is no correlation between luminosity and metallicity among the M31 sample clusters, which indicates that self-enrichment is indeed unimportant for cluster formation in M31.
The reddening distribution shows that slightly more than half of the GCs are affected by a reddening of E ( B − V ) ≲ 0.2 mag; the mean reddening value is E ( B − V ) = 0.28+0.23 −0.14 mag . The spatial distribution of the reddening values indicates that the reddening on the north-western side of the M31 disc is more significant than that on the south-eastern side, which is consistent with the conclusion that the north-western side is nearer to us. 相似文献

The impact of stochastic gas motions on the metal distribution in cluster cores is evaluated. Peaked abundance profiles are a characteristic feature of clusters with cool cores, and abundance peaks are probably associated with the brightest cluster galaxies (BCGs), which dwell in cluster cores. However, the width of the abundance peaks is significantly broader than the BCG light distribution, suggesting that some gas motions are transporting metals originating from within the BCG. Assuming that this process can be treated as diffusive, and using the brightest X-ray cluster A426 (Perseus) as an example, we estimate that a diffusion coefficient of the order of 2 × 1029 cm2 s−1 is needed to explain the width of the observed abundance profiles. Much lower (higher) diffusion coefficients would result in too peaked (too shallow) profiles. Such diffusion could be produced by stochastic gas motions, and our analysis provides constraints on the product of their characteristic velocity and their spatial coherence scale. We speculate that the activity of the supermassive black hole of the BCG is driving the stochastic gas motions in cluster cores. When combined with the assumption that the dissipation of the same motions is a key gas heating mechanism, one can estimate both the velocity and the spatial scale of such diffusive processes. 相似文献

The observed properties of young star clusters, such as the core radius and luminosity profile, change rapidly during the early evolution of the clusters. Here we present observations of six young clusters in M51 where we derive their sizes using Hubble Space Telescope ( HST ) imaging and ages using deep Gemini-North spectroscopy. We find evidence for a rapid expansion of the cluster cores during the first 20 Myr of their evolution. We confirm this trend by including data from the literature of both Galactic and extragalactic embedded and young clusters, and possible mechanisms (rapid gas removal, stellar evolutionary mass loss and internal dynamical heating) are discussed. We explore the implications of this result, focussing on the fact that clusters were more concentrated in the past, implying that their stellar densities were much higher and relaxation times ( t relax ) correspondingly shorter. Thus, when estimating if a particular cluster is dynamically relaxed (i.e. when determining if a cluster's mass segregation is due to primordial or dynamical processes), the current relaxation time is only an upper limit, with t relax likely being significantly shorter in the past. 相似文献
