We investigate the stability of a dense neutral shell that is accelerated outward by the hot-gas pressure and that loses its mass through photoionization by radiation from the central star. We assume the H I shell to be thin and use the Lagrangian coordinates to describe its motion. We show that a flow accompanied by cumulative effects emerges during the nonlinear development of the instability. We estimate the influence of the radiative cooling rate on the motion and determine parameters of the gas in the cumulative region. The results obtained are compared with the observations of the nebulae NGC 7293 and NGC 2392.  相似文献

We examine the effects of Io ejecta on the surface and environment of Europa. We find that the observed sulfur on the trailing side of Europa, when interpreted as a deposit in equilibrium between implanation of, and sputtering by, corotating Io ejecta, implies a slow loss of material from Europa by sputtering. From this we infer that the spectrum of particles sputtered from water ice is soft. The quantity of observed sulfur and its confinement to the trailing hemisphere appear to exclude significant implantation and sputtering by energetic heavy ions. We also conclude that the contribution from Europa to the magnetospheric plasma (even at Europa itself) is negligible compared to the matter ejected from Io.  相似文献

We study the persistence of warps in galactic discs in the presence of massive haloes. A disc is approximated by a set of massive rings, while a halo is represented by a conventional n -body simulation. We confirm the conclusion of Nelson &38; Tremaine that a halo responds strongly to an embedded precessing disc. This response invalidates the approximations made in the derivation of classical 'modified tilt' modes. We show that the response of the halo causes the line of nodes of a disc that starts from a modified tilt mode to wind up within a few dynamical times. We explain this finding in terms of the probable spectrum of true normal modes of a combined disc–halo system. The key physical point is that in each radial range the halo rapidly aligns with the disc, so calculations based on the assumption that, in the presence of a warped disc, the halo retains a regular spheroidal structure are based on a fatally flawed assumption.  相似文献

We investigate the effect of a planet on an eccentric orbit on a two-dimensional low-mass gaseous disc. At a planet eccentricity above the planet's Hill radius divided by its semimajor axis, we find that the disc morphology differs from that exhibited by a disc containing a planet in a circular orbit. An eccentric gap is created with eccentricity that can exceed the planet's eccentricity and precesses with respect to the planet's orbit. We find that a more massive planet is required to open a gap when the planet is on an eccentric orbit. We attribute this behaviour to spiral density waves excited at corotation resonances by the eccentric planet. These act to increase the disc's eccentricity and exert a torque opposite in sign to that exerted by the Lindblad resonances. The reduced torque makes it more difficult for waves driven by the planet to overcome viscous inflow in the disc.  相似文献

We study the propagation of solitary waves of vortices within a spherical shell which constitutes the uppermost layer of a solid planet. This solid-liquid configuration rotates with constant angular velocity about an axis which is fixed with respect to the solid surface. The fluid within the shell is inviscid, incompressible, and of constant density. The motion imparted by the planetary rotation upon this fluid mass is governed by the Laplace tidal equation from which the potential of the extraplanetary forces has been deleted. Consistent with this ocean model, we establish that the stream function of a solitary wave of vortices must satisfy a third-order partial differential equation. We obtain solutions to this wave equation by imposing the condition that the vertical component of vorticity be functionally related to the stream function. We find that this dependence must necessarily be of the exponential type and that the solution to the wave equation then reduces to a quadrature depending on some arbitrary parameters. We prove that we can always choose the values of these parameters in order to approximate the integral in question by means of an analytic function: we reach a representation of the stream function of a solitary wave of vortices in terms of hyperbolic functions of time and position.This paper is dedicated to the memory of Professor Zdenek Kopal.  相似文献

In this paper, we shall study the problem of stability of polar oscillations of a non-rotating Newtonian superfluid star. We find that the stability of the latter system is guaranteed by the positive definiteness of a matrix quantity. We also find conditions which characterize the occurrence of zero-frequency polar modes, which marks the onset of polar instability. We find that the negative definiteness of the mentioned matrix quantity implies instability of the system. We apply our results to show that the polar oscillations of a non-rotating Newtonian superfluid star in the zero-temperature approximation are marginally stable.  相似文献

We investigate the damping of neutron star r modes due to the presence of a viscous boundary (Ekman) layer at the interface between the crust and the core. Our study is motivated by the possibility that the gravitational wave driven instability of the inertial r modes may become active in rapidly spinning neutron stars, for example, in low-mass X-ray binaries, and the fact that a viscous Ekman layer at the core–crust interface provides an efficient damping mechanism for these oscillations. We review various approaches to the problem and carry out an analytic calculation of the effects due to the Ekman layer for a rigid crust. Our analytic estimates support previous numerical results, and provide further insight into the intricacies of the problem. We add to previous work by discussing the effect that compressibility and composition stratification have on the boundary-layer damping. We show that, while stratification is unimportant for the r-mode problem, composition suppresses the damping rate by about a factor of 2 (depending on the detailed equation of state).  相似文献

We perform Monte Carlo simulations of cosmic ray-induced hard X-ray radiation from the Earth's atmosphere. We find that the shape of the spectrum emergent from the atmosphere in the energy range 25–300 keV is mainly determined by Compton scatterings and photoabsorption, and is almost insensitive to the incident cosmic ray spectrum. We provide a fitting formula for the hard X-ray surface brightness of the atmosphere as would be measured by a satellite-borne instrument, as a function of energy, solar modulation level, geomagnetic cut-off rigidity and zenith angle. A recent measurement by the INTEGRAL observatory of the atmospheric hard X-ray flux during the occultation of the cosmic X-ray background by the Earth agrees with our prediction within 10 per cent. This suggests that Earth observations could be used for in-orbit calibration of future hard X-ray telescopes. We also demonstrate that the hard X-ray spectra generated by cosmic rays in the crusts of the Moon, Mars and Mercury should be significantly different from that emitted by the Earth's atmosphere.  相似文献

V838 Mon is the prototype of a new class of objects. Understanding the nature of its multistage outburst and similar systems is challenging. So far, several scenarios have been invoked to explain this group of stars. In this work, the planets-swallowing model for V838 Mon is further investigated, taking into account the findings that the progenitor is most likely a massive B-type star. We find that the super-Eddington luminosity during the eruption can explain the fast rising times of the three peaks in the optical light curve. We used two different methods to estimate the location where the planets were consumed. There is a nice agreement between the values obtained from the luminosities of the peaks and from their rising time-scale. We estimate that the planets were stopped at a typical distance of one solar radius from the centre of the host giant star. The planets-devouring model seems to give a satisfying explanation to the differences in the luminosities and rising times of the three peaks in the optical light curve of V838 Mon. The peaks may be explained by the consumption of three planets or alternatively by three steps in the terminal falling process of a single planet. We argue that only the binary merger and the planets-swallowing models are consistent with the observations of the new type of stars defined by V838 Mon.  相似文献

We investigate a new theory of the origin of the irregular satellites of the giant planets: capture of one member of a ∼100-km binary asteroid after tidal disruption. The energy loss from disruption is sufficient for capture, but it cannot deliver the bodies directly to the observed orbits of the irregular satellites. Instead, the long-lived capture orbits subsequently evolve inward due to interactions with a tenuous circumplanetary gas disk.We focus on the capture by Jupiter, which, due to its large mass, provides a stringent test of our model. We investigate the possible fates of disrupted bodies, the differences between prograde and retrograde captures, and the effects of Callisto on captured objects. We make an impulse approximation and discuss how it allows us to generalize capture results from equal-mass binaries to binaries with arbitrary mass ratios.We find that at Jupiter, binaries offer an increase of a factor of ∼10 in the capture rate of 100-km objects as compared to single bodies, for objects separated by tens of radii that approach the planet on relatively low-energy trajectories. These bodies are at risk of collision with Callisto, but may be preserved by gas drag if their pericenters are raised quickly enough. We conclude that our mechanism is as capable of producing large irregular satellites as previous suggestions, and it avoids several problems faced by alternative models.  相似文献

We analyse different methods of searching for planets around neutron stars by timing observations of pulsars. To this end, we study a few interesting models describing TOA residual variations that are observed, or could be observed, and which can mimic planets. We carry out a detailed theoretical analysis of the behaviour of these methods in the situations mentioned. We show that it is very helpful to look at these phenomena as some kind of quasi-periodic variations of residuals of time of arrival of pulsar pulses. We demonstrate that such a model-independent approach leads to promising conclusions that can be useful when analysing timing observations of pulsars to find planets or to prove that observed phenomena are of planetary origin.  相似文献

We assess the effect of a population of high-redshift quasars on the 21-cm power spectrum during the epoch of reionization. Our approach is to implement a seminumerical scheme to calculate the three-dimensional structure of ionized regions surrounding massive haloes at high redshift. We include the ionizing influence of luminous quasars by populating a simulated overdensity field with quasars using a Monte Carlo Markov Chain algorithm. We find that quasars modify both the amplitude and shape of the power spectrum at a level which is of the same order as the fractional contribution to reionization. The modification is found both at constant redshift and at constant global neutral fraction, and arises because ionizing photons produced by quasars are biased relative to the density field at a level that is higher than stellar ionizing photons. The modification of the power spectrum is likely to be small, rendering the effect of quasars difficult to isolate. However, we find the modification of the power spectrum by quasars to be at a level that is comparable to the precision expected for future low-frequency telescopes. Correct interpretation of observations will therefore require the effect of quasars to be considered, and our results imply that quasar ionization will need to be included in detailed modelling of observed 21-cm power spectra.  相似文献

We study spherically symmetrical equilibrium states of collisionless stellar systems confined to a spherical box. These equilibrium states correspond to the statistics introduced by Lynden-Bell in his theory of 'violent relaxation', and are described by a Fermi–Dirac distribution function. We compute the corresponding equilibrium diagram and show that a global entropy maximum exists for any accessible control parameter. This equilibrium state shows a pronounced separation between a degenerate core and a halo. We therefore check that degeneracy is able to stop the gravitational collapse (of a collisionless system), and we propose a simple model for the 'core–halo' structure. We also discuss the relevance of our study for real galaxies or other astrophysical systems such as massive neutrinos.  相似文献

We investigate some of Tifft's recent statistical analyses of periodicities in extragalactic redshift samples. The values of the periodicities are refinements of those predicted by Lehto. The redshifts have been corrected for the apparent motion of the solar system relative to the cosmic background radiation and have been filtered by applying criteria such as 21 cm profile width and redshift. In all cases except one, our Monte-Carlo simulations show general agreement with Tifft's results. However, we find that one of his analyses is weakened by applying an inappropriate Bernoulli-trials statistic. We apply a new, more straightforward statistic that shows high statistical significance for some of the periodicities. We conclude that although some of Tifft's procedures seem to be open to some criticism, the periodicities are present at a level that is statistically significant.  相似文献

We use a model of polarized Galactic emission developed by the Planck collaboration to assess the impact of foregrounds on B -mode detection at low multipoles. Our main interest is in applications of noisy polarization data and in particular in assessing the feasibility of B -mode detection by Planck . This limits the complexity of foreground subtraction techniques that can be applied to the data. We analyse internal linear combination techniques and show that the offset caused by the dominant E -mode polarization pattern leads to a fundamental limit of   r ∼ 0.1  for the tensor–scalar ratio even in the absence of instrumental noise. We devise a simple, robust, template fitting technique using multifrequency polarization maps. We show that template fitting using Planck data alone offers a feasible way of recovering primordial B -modes from dominant foreground contamination, even in the presence of noise on the data and templates. We implement and test a pixel-based scheme for computing the likelihood function of cosmological parameters at low multipoles that incorporates foreground subtraction of noisy data.  相似文献

We study Parker instability (PI) operating in a non-adiabatic, gravitationally stratified, interstellar medium. We discuss models with two kinds of heating mechanisms. The first one results from photoionization models. The other, relying on supplemental sources, has been postulated by Reynolds, Haffner & Tufte. The cooling rate, corresponding to radiative losses, is an approximation to the one given by Dalgarno & McCray. An unperturbed state of the system represents a magnetohydrostatic and thermal equilibrium. We perform linear stability analysis by solving the boundary value problem. We find that the maximum growth rate of PI rises for increasing magnitudes of non-adiabatic effects. In the pure photoionization model, the maximum growth rate of the general non-adiabatic case coincides with the isothermal limit. Adding other sources of heat leads to a maximum growth rate that is larger than the one corresponding to the isothermal limit. We find that the influence of the supplemental heating on PI also leads to a decrease in temperature in magnetic valleys. Finally, we conclude that the initial gas cooling due to the action of PI may promote a subsequent onset of thermal instability in magnetic valleys and formation of giant molecular clouds.  相似文献

We present submillimetre data for the L1689 cloud in the ρ Ophiuchi molecular cloud complex. We detect a number of starless and pre-stellar cores and protostellar envelopes. We also detect a number of filaments for the first time in the submillimetre continuum that are parallel both to each other, and to filaments observed in the neighbouring L1688 cloud. These filaments are also seen in the 13CO observations of L1689. The filaments contain all of the star-formation activity in the cloud. L1689 lies next to the well-studied L1688 cloud that contains the ρ Oph-A core. L1688 has a much more active star-formation history than L1689 despite their apparent similarity in 13CO data. Hence, we label L1689 as the dog that didn't bark. We endeavour to explain this apparent anomaly by comparing the total mass of each cloud that is currently in the form of dense material such as pre-stellar cores. We note firstly that L1688 is more massive than L1689, but we also find that when normalized to the total mass of each cloud, the L1689 cloud has a much lower percentage of mass in dense cores than L1688. We attribute this to the hypothesis of Loren that the star formation in the ρ Ophiuchi complex is being affected and probably dominated by the external influence of the nearby Upper Scorpius OB association and predominantly by σ Sco. L1689 is further from σ Sco and is therefore less active. The influence of σ Sco appears none the less to have created the filaments that we observe in L1689.  相似文献
