One-hundred and three nearby bright Main-Sequence stars of spectral type F and G have been searched for infrared excess in order to find out Vega-like characteristics. In our sample of bright Main-Sequence F and G stars none of the G-type stars show infrared excess but 4 out of 28 F-type stars are Vega-like and the equilibrium distances of dust shells are within the planet-forming region.  相似文献

Cassini UVIS star occultations by the F ring detect 13 events ranging from 27 m to 9 km in width. We interpret these structures as likely temporary aggregations of multiple smaller objects, which result from the balance between fragmentation and accretion processes. One of these features was simultaneously observed by VIMS. There is evidence that this feature is elongated in azimuth. Some features show sharp edges. At least one F ring object is opaque and may be a “moonlet.” This possible moonlet provides evidence for larger objects embedded in Saturn's F ring, which were predicted as the sources of the F ring material by Cuzzi and Burns [Cuzzi, J.N., Burns, J.A., 1988. Icarus 74, 284-324], and as an outcome of tidally modified accretion by Barbara and Esposito [Barbara, J.M., Esposito, L.W., 2002. Icarus 160, 161-171]. We see too few events to confirm the bi-modal distribution which Barbara and Esposito [Barbara, J.M., Esposito, L.W., 2002. Icarus 160, 161-171] predict. These F ring structures and other youthful features detected by Cassini may result from ongoing destruction of small parent bodies in the rings and subsequent aggregation of the fragments. If so, the temporary aggregates are 10 times more abundant than the solid objects. If recycling by re-accretion is significant, the rings could be quite ancient, and likely to persist far into the future.  相似文献

We present results of nonlinear, two-dimensional, numerical simulations of magneto-acoustic wave propagation in the photosphere and chromosphere of small-scale flux tubes with internal structure. Waves with realistic periods of three to five minutes are studied, after horizontal and vertical oscillatory perturbations are applied to the equilibrium model. Spurious reflections of shock waves from the upper boundary are minimized by a special boundary condition. This has allowed us to increase the duration of the simulations and to make it long enough to perform a statistical analysis of oscillations. The simulations show that deep horizontal motions of the flux tube generate a slow (magnetic) mode and a surface mode. These modes are efficiently transformed into a slow (acoustic) mode in the v A<c S atmosphere. The slow (acoustic) mode propagates vertically along the field lines, forms shocks, and remains always within the flux tube. It might effectively deposit the energy of the driver into the chromosphere. When the driver oscillates with a high frequency, above the cutoff, nonlinear wave propagation occurs with the same dominant driver period at all heights. At low frequencies, below the cutoff, the dominant period of oscillations changes with height from that of the driver in the photosphere to its first harmonic (half period) in the chromosphere. Depending on the period and on the type of the driver, different shock patterns are observed.  相似文献

We present near-infrared (1.24-2.26 μm) images of Saturn's E and G rings which were taken with the W.M. Keck telescope in 1995 August 9-11, during the period that Earth crossed Saturn's ring plane. Our data confirm that the E ring is very blue. Its radial and vertical structure are found to be remarkably similar to that apparent in the HST ringplane crossing data at visible wavelengths, reinforcing models of the ring's peculiar narrow or very steep particle size distribution. Our data show unambiguously that the satellite Tethys is a secondary source of material for the E ring. The G ring is found to be distinctly red, similar in color to Jupiter's main ring, indicative of a (more typical) broad particle size distribution.  相似文献

We both test and offer an alternative to a meteoroid bombardment model (M. R. Showalter 1998, Science282, 1099-1102) and suggest that anomalous localized brightenings in the F ring observed by Voyager result from disruptive collisions involving poorly consolidated moonlets, or “rubble piles.” This model can also explain the transient events observed during ring plane crossing. We have developed an evolutionary model that considers both the competing effects of accretion and disruption at the location of the F ring. Our numerical model is a Markov process where probabilities of mass transfer between the states of the system form a “transition matrix.” Successive multiplications of this matrix by the state vector generate expectation values of the distribution after each time step as the system approaches quasi-equilibrium. Competing effects of accretion and disruption in the F ring are found to lead to a bimodal distribution of ring particle sizes. In fact, our simulation predicts the presence of a belt of kilometer-sized moonlets in the F ring. These moonlets may continually disrupt one another and re-accrete on short time scales. We also agree with J. N. Cuzzi and J. A. Burns (1988, Icarus74, 284-324), who suggest that the classical F ring itself may be the consequence of a relatively recent collision between two of the largest of these yet unseen objects. Cassini observations can confirm the existence of the moonlet belt by directly observing these objects or the waves they create in the rings.  相似文献

The protoplanetary nebular analog to the planetary Rossby wave is developed. Linear dispersion relations are derived. It is found that the nebular Rossby wave propagates freely in the nebular azimuthal direction and slowly grows in the radial direction. Possible ramifications for the nebula are raised for the reverse transition of turbulence into Rossby waves and zonal jets via the Rhines mechanism (P. B. Rhines 1975, J. Fluid Mech.69, 417–443), specifically, the formation of long-lived vortices and the accretion of solid bodies.  相似文献

Radio wave propagation through an inhomogeneous, random plasma produces a variety of observable phenomena – group delay, Faraday rotation, refraction, angular broadening, spectral broadening, and scintillations in phase, amplitude, and frequency. These may be exploited to constrain the mean and fluctuating properties of the medium through a variety of remote sensing techniques. In the case of the solar corona and the solar wind, the mean density, magnetic field, solar wind speed, and the spatial spectrum of the density fluctuation scan all be constrained in regions that are inaccessible to in situmeasurements. We model the propagation of a coronal shock wave, using nonlinear geometrical acoustics. The method is based on the Wentzel–Kramers–Brillouin (WKB) approach and takes into account the main properties of nonlinear waves: i) dependence of the wave front velocity on the wave amplitude, ii) nonlinear dissipation of the wave energy, and iii) progressive increase in the duration of solitary shock waves. We address the method in detail and present results of the modeling of the propagation of shock-associated extreme-ultraviolet (EUV) waves as well as Moreton waves along the solar surface in the simplest solar corona model. The calculations reveal deceleration and lengthening of the waves. In contrast, waves considered in the linear approximation keep their length unchanged and slightly accelerate.  相似文献

We present ‘empirical’ models (pressure vs. density) of Saturn's interior constrained by the gravitational coefficients J2, J4, and J6 for different assumed rotation rates of the planet. The empirical pressure-density profile is interpreted in terms of a hydrogen and helium physical equation of state to deduce the hydrogen to helium ratio in Saturn and to constrain the depth dependence of helium and heavy element abundances. The planet's internal structure (pressure vs. density) and composition are found to be insensitive to the assumed rotation rate for periods between 10h:32m:35s and 10h:41m:35s. We find that helium is depleted in the upper envelope, while in the high pressure region (P?1 Mbar) either the helium abundance or the concentration of heavier elements is significantly enhanced. Taking the ratio of hydrogen to helium in Saturn to be solar, we find that the maximum mass of heavy elements in Saturn's interior ranges from ∼6 to 20 M. The empirical models of Saturn's interior yield a moment of inertia factor varying from 0.22271 to 0.22599 for rotation periods between 10h:32m:35s and 10h:41m:35s, respectively. A long-term precession rate of about 0.754 yr−1 is found to be consistent with the derived moment of inertia values and assumed rotation rates over the entire range of investigated rotation rates. This suggests that the long-term precession period of Saturn is somewhat shorter than the generally assumed value of 1.77×106 years inferred from modeling and observations.  相似文献

High-dispersion and low-resolution data are combined to search for super-metal-rich (SMR) FGK stars in the solar neighbourhood and Baade's Window. The data are assessed by using statistical analysis, with their rms errors playing a key role. A star is considered to be SMR if its value of     , while 'borderline' SMR status may be assigned if     . Borderline SMR status is assigned to μ Leo and three other giants, but no full-fledged SMR giants are found in either Baade's Window or the solar neighbourhood. By contrast, the existence of SMR class     stars turns out to be well established, with values found for [Fe/H] that are as large as ∼+0.4 dex. It is concluded that this apparent contrast between class     stars and giants should not be interpreted in astrophysical terms at present because of marked shortcomings in the available data base for giants. Recommendations are made about future research that may cure this problem and extend present knowledge about SMR dwarfs.  相似文献

A sample containing 1 026 stars of spectral types F, G, and K, mainly dwarfs, from the solar neighbourhood with available space velocities and metallicities is treated. The treatment comprises a statistical analysis of the metallicity and velocity data and calculation of galactocentric orbits. Sample stars identified as members of the galactic halo are detached from the rest of the sample based on the values of their metallicities, velocity components and galactocentric orbits. In identifying halo stars a new, kinematical, criterion is proposed. Except one, these halo stars are the metal‐poorest ones in the sample. Besides, they have very high velocities with respect to LSR. On the other hand, the separation between the thin disc and thick one is done statistically based on LSR space velocities, membership probability (Schwarzschild distribution with assumed parameters) and galactocentric orbits. In the metallicity these two groups are not much different. For each of the three subsamples the mean motion and velocity ellipsoid are calculated. The elements of the velocity ellipsoids agree well with the values found in the literature, especially for the thin disc. The fractions of the subsystems found for the present sample are: thin disc 93%, thick disc 6%, halo 1%. The sample stars established to be members of the thin disc are examined for existence of star streams. Traces of both, known and unknown, star streams are not found (© 2009 WILEY‐VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA, Weinheim)  相似文献

We used high-resolution echelle spectra with high signal-to-noise ratio to determine with a high degree of accuracy some atmospheric parameters (T eff, log g and [Fe/H]) for 68 non-variable supergiants of types F, G, and K and 26 classical Cepheids in 302 pulsation phases. Very accurate effective temperatures, with errors of only 10–30 K, were determined by the line-depth ratio method. We found that the observed intrinsic color indices (B ? V)0 can be related to these parameters: (B ? V)0 = 57.984? 10.3587(log T eff)2 + 1.67572(log T eff)3 ? 3.356 log g+ 0.321 V t + 0.2615[Fe/H] + 0.8833log g(log T eff). With this empirical relation, the intrinsic colors of individual supergiants and classical Cepheids of spectral types F0-K0 and of luminosity classes I and II can be estimated with an accuracy as high as 0.05 m , which is comparable to the accuracy of the most elaborate photometric procedures. In view of large distances to supergiants, the method we propose here allows a large-scale mapping of interstellar extinction with an accuracy of 0.1–0.2 m in a quite large region of the Galaxy.  相似文献

I have compiled here the three libraries of high and mid-resolution optical spectra of late-type stars I have recently published. The libraries include F, G, K and M field stars, from dwarfs to giants. The spectral coverage is from 3800 to 1000 Å, with spectral resolution ranging from 0.09 to 3.0 Å. These spectra include many of the spectral lines most widely used as optical and near-infrared indicators of chromospheric activity. The spectra have been obtained with the aim of providing a library of high and mid-resolution spectra to be used in the study of active chromosphere stars by applying a spectral subtraction technique. However, the data set presented here can also be utilized in a wide variety of ways. A digital version of all the fully reduced spectra is available via FTP and the World Wide Web (WWW) in FITS format. This revised version was published online in July 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.  相似文献

The abundances of two chemical elements of the iron group, viz., Cr and Ti, were determined by their high-resolution spectra for 22 A, F, and G supergiants in the solar neighborhood (within 700 pc). The titanium and chromium abundances were obtained using the Cr II and Ti II lines. The average chromium abundance of log?(Cr) = 5.70 ± 0.13 within the error limit corresponds to the solar abundance of log?(Cr) = 5.64. The average titanium abundance of log?(Ti) = 4.89 ± 0.10 within the error limit is very close to the solar abundance of log?(Ti) = 4.95. The average Cr and Ti abundances may be indicative of the fact that the average metallicity of young closely located stars is identical to that of the Sun.  相似文献

We discuss the cosmological reconstruction in modified Gauss-Bonnet (GB) gravity. It is demonstrated that the modified GB gravity may describe the most interesting features of late-time cosmology. We derive explicit form of effective phantom cosmological models ending by the finite-time future singularity (Big Rip) and without singularities in the future (Little Rip).  相似文献

In this paper, the first statistically rigorous test is performed to determine whether there are dwarfs in the solar neighbourhood with [Fe/H] > +0.2 dex. The possibility that no such stars exist is rejected with a confidence limit exceeding 99.994 per cent. If the threshold value is raised to +0.38 dex, the corresponding hypothesis is rejected with a confidence limit of 98.5 per cent. It is tentatively found that this upper limit does not depend on the presence or absence of planets orbiting metal-rich stars. In a result that is unchanged from a previous paper, the upper limit for the known metallicities of giants is found to be about 0.2 dex lower than the limit for dwarfs. Stars that might be observed to improve the upper metallicity limit for dwarfs are listed.  相似文献

Assuming that similar organic components as in comet 81P/Wild 2 are present in incoming meteoroids, we try to anticipate the observable signatures they would produce for meteor detection techniques. In this analysis we consider the elemental and organic components in cometary aggregate interplanetary dust particles and laboratory analyses of inter- and circumstellar carbon dust analogues. On the basis of our analysis we submit that (semi) quantitative measurements of H, N and C produced during meteor ablation will open an entire new aspect to using meteoroids as tracers of these volatile element abundances in active comets and their contributions to the mesospheric metal layers.  相似文献

Molecular oxygen produced by the decomposition of icy surfaces is ubiquitous in Saturn's magnetosphere. A model is described for the toroidal O2 atmosphere indicated by the detection of and O+ over the main rings. The O2 ring atmosphere is produced primarily by UV photon-induced decomposition of ice on the sunlit side of the ring. Because O2 has a long lifetime and interacts frequently with the ring particles, equivalent columns of O2 exist above and below the ring plane with the scale height determined by the local ring temperature. Energetic particles also decompose ice, but estimates of their contribution over the main rings appear to be very low. In steady state, the O2 column density over the rings also depends on the relative efficiency of hydrogen to oxygen loss from the ring/atmosphere system with oxygen being recycled on the grain surfaces. Unlike the neutral density, the ion densities can differ on the sunlit and shaded sides due to differences in the ionization rate, the quenching of ions by the interaction with the ring particles, and the northward shift of the magnetic equator relative to the ring plane. Although O+ is produced with a significant excess energy, is not. Therefore, should mirror well below those altitudes at which ions were detected. However, scattering by ion-molecule collisions results in much larger mirror altitudes, in ion temperatures that go through a minimum over the B-ring, and in the redistribution of both molecular hydrogen and oxygen throughout the magnetosphere. The proposed model is used to describe the measured oxygen ion densities in Saturn's toroidal ring atmosphere and its hydrogen content. The oxygen ion densities over the B-ring appear to require either significant levels of UV light scattering or ion transmission through the ring plane.  相似文献
