Comets
Summary The status of cometary astronomy and astrophysics as of mid-1992 is reviewed, i.e. at a time when the first in situ observations of comets in 1985–86 have been thoroughly discussed, interpreted and compared with ground-based investigations. Many earlier ideas about comets were vindicated and a plethora of new discoveries resulted which have now led to reformulation of certain observational strategies and, in particular, to greatly improved possibilities for the detailed physical/chemical modelling of many cometary phenomena.A main purpose of this paper is to assess the current situation and to provide a reasonably complete, yet concise and critical evaluation of the most important questions and promising lines of research in this field. After a short introduction which defines the overall subject and the framework of the present review (Sect. 1), we take a look at some of the major past developments of our concepts about comets, in particular the crucial new insights which were gained during the past four decades (Sect. 2). The rapid advances in observational technology have greatly extended the realm of accessible problems and we next discuss the present possibilities and restrictions of the various techniques employed (Sect. 3).Part II of this paper discusses the modelling of cometary comae and tails (Sect. 4), the cometary nucleus (Sect. 5), the evolution (Sect. 6) and origin (Sect. 7) of comets and ends with an overview of the main questions now being asked by cometary studies (Sect. 8).  相似文献

Recent experimental results on the evolution of targets, simulating cometary bodies and interplanetary grains, under the action of energetic protons are summarized. The main finding is that carbon-rich volatiles evolve toward a complex organic material which in turn, when bombarded at higher doses, is transformed to a carbon-like material becoming completely different from the original matrix. The applications of these results to comets and interplanetary grains shows that galactic or solar fast protons are able to build up large amounts of organic refractory material down to depths of ∼ 100 m in a comet and of carbon-like materials on grains that are supposed to be cometary debris. This implies that relevant component materials of comets and grains lose their supposed “primitive” nature and “forget” what they were in the galactic cloud from which the Solar System was generated.  相似文献

The “mass loading” of the solar wind by cometary ions produced by the photoionization of neutral molecules outflowing from the cometary nucleus plays a major role in the interaction of the solar wind with cometary atmospheres. In particular, this process leads to a decrease in the solar wind velocity with a transition from supersonic velocities to subsonic ones through the bow shock. The so-called single-fluid approximation, in which the interacting plasma flows are considered as a single fluid, is commonly used in modeling such an interaction. However, it is occasionally necessary to know the distribution of parameters for the components of the interacting plasma flows. For example, when the flow of the cometary dust component in the interplanetary magnetic field is considered, the dust particle charge, which depends significantly on the composition of the surrounding plasma, needs to be known. In this paper, within the framework of a three-dimensional magnetohydrodynamic model of the solar wind flow around cometary ionospheres, we have managed to separately obtain the density distributions of solar wind protons and cometary ions between the bow shock and the cometary ionopause (in the shock layer). The influence of the interplanetary magnetic field on the position of the point of intersection between the densities with the formation of a region near the ionopause where the proton density is essentially negligible compared to the density of cometary ions is investigated. Such a region was experimentally detected by the Vega-2 spacecraft when investigating Comet Halley in March 1986. The results of the model considered below are compared with some experimental data obtained by the Giotto spacecraft under the conditions of flow around Comets Halley and Grigg–Skjellerup in 1986 and 1992, respectively. Unfortunately, our results of calculations on Comet Churyumov–Gerasimenko are only predictive in character, because the trajectory of the Rosetta spacecraft, which manoeuvred near its surface for several months, is complex.  相似文献

In the paper the potential sources of energy of cometary outbursts have been reviewed. Considerations focus on four probable sources of the outbursts' energy. These are the polymerization of hydrogen cyanide HCN, impacts with the meteoroids, destruction of cometary grains in the field of strong solar wind and the transformation of amorphous water Ice into the crystalline one. The values of released energy and jumps of cometary brightness caused by these mechanisms have been discussed. A modern approach to the problem of the thermodynamical evolution of the comet nucleus which includes amorphous water ice is considered as the starting point in the discussion presented in the paper. The main characteristics of an outburst of a hypothetical comet belonging to the Jupiter family comet are calculated. The obtained results are in a good agreement with the characteristics observed during the real outbursts of comets. The main conclusion of this paper confirms a general presumption that the cometary outbursts can have different causes. However, the hypothesis concerning the amorphous water ice transformation appears to be the most probable one. (© 2007 WILEY-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA, Weinheim)  相似文献

In this paper we analyze the dynamical behavior of large dust grains in the vicinity of a cometary nucleus. To this end we consider the gravitational field of the irregularly shaped body, as well as its electric and magnetic fields. Without considering the effect of gas friction and solar radiation, we find that there exist grains which are static relative to the cometary nucleus; the positions of these grains are the stable equilibria. There also exist grains in the stable periodic orbits close to the cometary nucleus. The grains in the stable equilibria or the stable periodic orbits won’t escape or impact on the surface of the cometary nucleus. The results are applicable for large charge dusts with small area-mass ratio which are near the cometary nucleus and far from the Solar. It is found that the resonant periodic orbit can be stable, and there exist stable non-resonant periodic orbits, stable resonant periodic orbits and unstable resonant periodic orbits in the potential field of cometary nuclei. The comet gravity force, solar gravity force, electric force, magnetic force, solar radiation pressure, as well as the gas drag force are all considered to analyze the order of magnitude of these forces acting on the grains with different parameters. Let the distance of the dust grain relative to the mass centre of the cometary nucleus, the charge and the mass of the dust grain vary, respectively, fix other parameters, we calculated the strengths of different forces. The motion of the dust grain depends on the area-mass ratio, the charge, and the distance relative to the comet’s mass center. For a large dust grain (> 1 mm) close to the cometary nucleus which has a small value of area-mass ratio, the comet gravity is the largest force acting on the dust grain. For a small dust grain (< 1 mm) close to the cometary nucleus with large value of area-mass ratio, both the solar radiation pressure and the comet gravity are two major forces. If the a small dust grain which is close to the cometary nucleus have the large value of charge, the magnetic force, the solar radiation pressure, and the electric force are all major forces. When the large dust grain is far away from the cometary nucleus, the solar gravity and solar radiation pressure are both major forces.  相似文献

Abstract— Understanding the nature of the cometary nucleus remains one of the major problems in solar system science. Whipple's (1950) icy conglomerate model has been very successful at explaining a range of cometary phenomena, including the source of cometary activity and the nongravitational orbital motion of the nuclei. However, the internal structure of the nuclei is still largely unknown. We review herein the evidence for cometary nuclei as fluffy aggregates or primordial rubble piles, as first proposed by Donn et al. (1985) and Weissman (1986). These models assume that cometary nuclei are weakly bonded aggregations of smaller, icy‐conglomerate planetesimals, possibly held together only by self‐gravity. Evidence for this model comes from studies of the accretion and subsequent evolution of material in the solar nebula, from observations of disrupted comets, and in particular comet Shoemaker‐Levy 9, from measurements of the ensemble rotational properties of observed cometary nuclei, and from recent spacecraft missions to comets. Although the evidence for rubble pile nuclei is growing, the eventual answer to this question will likely not come until we can place a spacecraft in orbit around a cometary nucleus and study it in detail over many months to years. ESA's Rosetta mission, now en route to comet 67P/Churyumov‐Gerasimenko, will provide that opportunity.  相似文献

In this paper we have endeavored to critically evaluate our present understanding of cometary atmospheres. Following a brief introduction of the significance of the study of cometary atmospheres (Section 1), the relevant photometric and spectroscopic observations are summarized in Section 2.The interaction with the solar radiation, with regard to both the excitation of the observed species as well as the dissociation of stable molecules evaporating from the nucleus, is considered in Sections 3 and 4. The gas phase chemistry likely to take place in the dense inner coma is next considered in Section 5.The exospheric and hydrodynamic models of the expanding cometary atmosphere are considered in detail in Section 6, and both their limitations as well as possible improvements are discussed. The observed chemical composition of the neutral atmosphere and the inferred chemical composition of the volatile component of the nucleus, together with possible variations between different classes of comets is next considered in Section 7, and their possible cosmogonic significance is discussed. In conclusion, some of the important directions in which future research should progress, in order to provide more complete and secure knowledge of cometary atmospheres, are stressed (Section 8).Astrophysics and Space Science Review Paper.  相似文献

The observation of ions created by ionization of cometary gas, either by ground-based observations or byin situmeasurements can give us useful information about the gas production and composition of comets. However, due to the interaction of ions with the magnetized solar wind and their high chemical reactivity, it is not possible to relate measured ion densities (or column densities) directly to the parent gas densities. In order to quantitatively analyze measured ion abundances in cometary comae it is necessary to understand their dynamics and chemistry. We have developed a detailed ion–chemical network of cometary atmospheres. We include production of ions by photo- and electron impact-ionization of a background neutral atmosphere, charge exchange of solar wind ions with cometary atoms/molecules, reactions between ions and molecules, and dissociative recombination of molecular ions with thermal electrons. By combining the ion–chemical network with the three-dimensional plasma flow as computed by a new fully three-dimensional MHD model of cometary plasma environments (Gombosiet al.1996) we are able to compute the density of the major cometary ions everywhere in the coma. The input parameters for our model are the solar wind conditions (density, speed, temperature, magnetic field) and the composition and production rate of the gas. We applied our model to Comet P/Halley in early March 1986, for which the input parameters are reasonably well known. We compare the resulting column density of H2O+with ground-based observations of H2O+from DiSantiet al.(1990). The results of our model are in good agreement with both the spatial distribution and the absolute abundance of H2O+and with their variations with the changing overall water production rate between two days. The results are encouraging that it will be possible to obtain production rates of neutral cometary constituents from observations of their ion products.  相似文献

We consider the estimates of the main forces acting on dust particles near a cometary nucleus. On the basis of these estimates, the motion of dust particles of different structure and mass is analyzed. We consider the following forces: (1) the cometary nucleus gravity, (2) the solar radiation pressure, and (3) the drag on dust particles by a flow of gas produced in the sublimation of cometary ice. These forces are important for modeling the motion of dust particles relative to the cometary nucleus and may substantially influence the dust transfer over its surface. In the simulations, solid silicate spheres and homogeneous ballistic aggregates are used as model particles. Moreover, we propose a technique to build hierarchic aggregates—a new model of quasi-spherical porous particles. A hierarchic type of aggregates makes it possible to model rather large dust particles, up to a millimeter in size and larger, while no important requirements for computer resources are imposed. We have shown that the properties of such particles differ from those of classical porous ballistic aggregates, which are usually considered in the cometary physics problems, and considering the microscopic structure of particles is of crucial significance for the analysis of the observational data. With the described models, we study the dust dynamics near the nucleus of comet 67P/Churyumov–Gerasimenko at an early stage of the Rosetta probe observations when the comet was approximately at 3.2 AU from the Sun. The interrelations between the main forces acting on dust aggregates at difference distances from the nucleus have been obtained. The dependence of the velocity of dust aggregates on their mass has been found. The numerical modeling results and the data of spaceborne observations with the Grain Impact Analyzer and Dust Accumulator (GIADA) and the Cometary Secondary Ion Mass Analyzer (COSIMA) onboard the Rosetta probe are compared at a quantitative level.  相似文献

The possibility of impacts and their results in relation to the cometary outbursts between comets and other small bodies in the solar system has been investigated. Taking into consideration certain physical features of cometary nuclei and impacting bodies, the probability of impacts of small bodies moving in the main asteroid belt with hypothetical comets which represent three types: Jupiter family comets, Halley family comets and long period comets has been computed. The probability of impacts between comets and meteoroids at large heliocentric distances has also been estimated. Potential consequences of these events in relation to outbursts of the cometary brightness have been discussed. (© 2004 WILEY‐VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA, Weinheim)  相似文献

The large differences in drift velocities between the solar wind protons and the picked-up ions of cometary origin cause the Alfvén waves (among others) to become unstable and generate turbulence. A self-consistent treatment of such instabilities has to take into account that these cometary ions affect the solar wind plasma in a decisive way. With the help of a previously developed formalism one finds the correct Alfvén instability criterion, which is here nondispersive, in contrast to recent calculations where the cometary ions are treated as a low-density, high-speed, and non-neutral beam through an otherwise undisturbed solar wind. The true bulk speed of the combined solar wind plus cometary ion plasma clearly shows the mass-loading and deceleration of the solar wind near the cometary nucleus, indicating a bow shock. The instability criterion is also used to determine the region upstream where the Alfvén waves can be unstable, based upon recent observations near comet Halley.  相似文献

There exist many comets with near-parabolic orbits in the Solar System. Among various theories proposed to explain their origin, the Oort cloud hypothesis seems to be the most reasonable (Oort, 1950). The theory assumes that there is a cometary cloud at a distance 103 – 105 AU from the Sun and that perturbing forces from planets or stars make orbits of some of these comets become of near-parabolic type. Concerning the evolution of these orbits under planetary perturbations, we can raise the question: Will they stay in the Solar System forever or will they escape from it? This is an attractive dynamical problem. If we go ahead by directly solving the dynamical differential equations, we may encounter the difficulty of long-time computation. For the orbits of these comets are near-parabolic and their periods are too long to study on their long-term evolution. With mapping approaches the difficulty will be overcome. In another aspect, the study of this model has special meaning for chaotic dynamics. We know that in the neighbourhood of any separatrix i.e. the trajectory with zero frequency of the unperturbed motion of an Hamiltonian system, some chaotic motions have to be expected. Actually, the simplest example of separatrix is the parabolic trajectory of the two body problem which separates the bounded and unbounded motion. From this point of view, the dynamical study on near-parabolic motion is very important. Petrosky's elegant but more abstract deduction gives a Kepler mapping which describes the dynamics of the cometary motion (Petrosky, 1988). In this paper we derive a similar mapping directly and discuss its dynamical characters.  相似文献

Comets seem to be composed of matter, which is supposed to have the same molecular composition as protosolar nebula. Although there are no unbiased evidence that cometary nuclei retain the molecular composition inherited from the protosolar cloud, the observed properties of comets indicate that there is at least a resemblance between cometary composition and the material properties of dense interstellar clouds. Therefore the origin of comets could be searched in the cold stages of the protosolar nebula and molecular abundances of grain mantles in this nebula may be similar to those in the cometary dust. It is suggested that comets may contain pristine, virtually unaltered protosolar material and their study might be very relevant way to more information about processes in early stages of the solar nebula. Our knowledge about composition of the cometary nucleus is still relatively scarce, but we can partly deduce it from data obtained either by ground-based spectroscopy or by in situ mass spectrometry from space experiments. Most important were the discovery of fluffy CHON particles composed partly or even completely from compounds containing light elements. No consensus concerning the presence of interstellar pristine matter in comet has been reached from various approaches to determine the relationship between comets and interstellar grains. Most of these studies are based on infrared spectroscopy. Another method is the comparison on the chemical models of the protosolar nebula with the volatile compounds of the cometary nuclei. Both gas-phase and grain-surface chemistry are considered and initial gas-phase atomic abundances are assumed to be protosolar. The cometary matter is certainly not identical with the typical material of dense interstellar cool dense clouds, but it is closer to it than any other type of matter in solar system so far accessible to us. The data from comets combined with models of chemical evolution of matter in environment similar as prevailed the early stage of presolar nebula may at least impose constrains on the condition for comet formation. Here presented study is a preliminary contribution to such studies.  相似文献

The majority of new ground-based discoveries of comets comes from large surveys devoted, predominantly, to Near Earth Asteroids. The first step in distinguishing these newly discovered members of the population of cometary bodies consists inconfirmatory astrometric observations along with detection of their cometaryfeatures. Although both amateur and professional stations take part in suchconfirmatory observations, only some of them do a preliminary analysis of thecometary activity of a particular newly discovered body. A timely recognitionof cometary features of a particular body having an unusual orbit can help inplanning further observing campaigns.A main goals of the Klet Observatory NEO astrometric follow-upprogramme consists of an analysis of possible cometary activity of newlydiscovered unusual bodies. Here, we describe several examples (comets C/1999 S4 (LINEAR) and so on). We also mention an extension of our programme to fainterobjects after the completion ofa new 1-m telescope at the Klet Observatory.  相似文献

Observations of cometary comae in the infrared and in the near-ultraviolet suggest that polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are present in these environments. However, the chemical identity and abundance of these molecules are not clearly determined yet. Some species are probably more stable than others when submitted to the solar radiation field, and are therefore more likely to be observed. The photophysics of gas-phase PAHs in cometary environments is modelled. Photodissociation occurs when the heating by absorption of UV photons is more efficient than the radiative cooling. The lifetime of the molecules is found to depend on their size: small molecules being more stable than large ones. Furthermore, at 1 AU from the Sun, the lifetime of PAHs is found to be very short (20s for phenanthrene). This suggests that, if observed in the gas phase in cometary environments, these molecules should be produced by an extended source.  相似文献

Until cometary matter can be studied in-situ or cometary samples are brought back to Earth for analysis, theoretical models and laboratory studies remain a crucial tool for revealing the nature of cometary matter. Constraints on the nature of the primordial material available for incorporation into comets and other solar system material comes from analysis of data from space-based and ground-based observatories. The structure of the nuclear ice component, which may have coexisting amorphous/crystalline phases and include clathrates and other trapped guest molecules, strongly influences the cometary outgassing properties. This paper reviews laboratory work on ice and carbon aceous compounds and discusses their significance for cometary chemistry. Special emphasis will be given to studies on the thermal processing of ices and their implications for the structure changes and subsequent release of volatiles. We also describe the preliminary results of a model of nuclear outgassing, and discuss how such model scan be used to infer the chemical structure of the nuclearices. Furthermore, we confront cometary data with the analysis of carbonaceous meteorites. Recent laboratory results on volatile compounds and the macro molecular structure of carbonaceous meteorites allow us to investigate the link of small bodies in the Solar System. Until ROSETTA will land on comet Wirtanen and study directly the nuclear composition, laboratory measurements of ice and refractory analogs will — together with the analysis of meteorites —significantly improve our knowledge on the origin and structure ofcomets.  相似文献

An important cause of the activation and development of active processes on the surface of a cometary nucleus is direct solar radiation illuminating a part of the surface that is not shielded by dust. The intensity of solar radiation near the surface of a cometary nucleus depends on the thickness of the dust cloud above the active area. If the size of the dust cloud noticeably changes, the intensity considerably depends on time. In the present paper, we consider the nonlinear equation of radiative transfer in a dust cloud growing towards the incident wave front with a constant velocity. The change in the intensity of direct solar radiation along the dust jet originating from the active surface area of a cometary nucleus has been found. For the sake of comparison, the linear equation of radiative transfer was solved in the framework of this task. It turns out that the linear approach to the solution of the considered problem suggests a noticeable loss in the amount of direct radiation participating in the dust-jet formation. This loss is comparable with the intensity of solar radiation incident to the active area of a cometary nucleus after scattering in the cometary atmosphere.  相似文献

High-resolution spectra of comet 8P/Tuttle were obtained in the frequency range 3449.0–3462.2 cm−1 on 2008 January 3 ut using CGS4 with echelle grating on United Kingdom Infrared Telescope. In addition to observing solar pumped fluorescent lines of H2O, the long integration time (152 min on target) enabled eight weaker H2O features to be assigned, most of which had not previously been identified in cometary spectra. These transitions, which are from higher energy upper states, are similar in character to the so-called SH lines recorded in the post Deep Impact spectrum of comet Tempel 1. We have identified certain characteristics that these lines have in common, and which in addition to helping to define this new class of cometary line give some clues to the physical processes involved in their production. Finally, we derive an H2O rotational temperature of     and a water production rate of  (1.4 ± 0.3) × 1028  molecules s−1.  相似文献
