A study of the galactic structure has been made by deriving the brightness distribution of the galactic plane at 2.2 m and 4.2 m near infrared region using infrared objects detected by ground-based sky surveys. The infrared brightness distribution shows distinct peaks at every 8–12° galactic longitude and indicates a periodic structure. The one-to-one positional correlation observed between the periodic structure in 2.2 m infrared brightness and the 2.6 mm CO emission line suggests that the near-infrared sources are strongly associated with dense clouds of molecular hydrogen distributed in the galactic plane.  相似文献

In this paper we present a study of the velocity components of the local centroids in the galactic plane for a point-axial stellar system model in a non-stationary state and with an equatorial plane of symmetry. The main results obtained are:(1) A displacement and attenuation of the maximum of the velocity-distance curve for different values of the direction. (2) The existence of expansion and contraction zones in the galactic plane.It must be pointed out that, in general, these velocity-distance curves require corrections due to the inclination of the galaxy. In the same way, it would be necessary to integrate the light along the line of vision. In the cylindrical case this latter factor has been studied by Catala (1975). However, these corrections do not greatly affect the structural form of the rotation curve as far as the aspects dealt with in this paper are concerned.  相似文献

The present paper is the introduction to a systematic analysis of 123 6-degree fields near the galactic plane, recorded in the medium ultraviolet (2000 Å) by the ballon-borne experiment SCAP 2000 of the Laboratoire d'Astronomie Spatiale, Marseille, and Geneva Observatory. The available data are presented and the general properties of the images are briefly discussed.It is shown that the high selectivity of the UV passband regarding spectral type, together with the strong interstellar extinction at that wavelength, provide the necessary conditions for an efficient application of Wolf's method to study the distribution of interstellar matter in the solar neighbourhood. The results of a fast analysis of the available data are presented here.  相似文献

Major spiral arms were traced from the distribution of long-period classical cepheids on the projected galactic plane. The position of these spiral features have been compared with those from other optical tracers such as H II regions and OB star groups. A method is proposed for constructing a map of the electron density distribution in the galactic plane. Data on the dispersion measures DM of more than 1500 pulsars and their distances, found by an independent method, are used. The independent distances of the pulsars are estimated using an empirical relation of the form LP α β W δ between the radio luminosity L of the pulsars and their periods P, the rate of change . of their periods, and the half width W of their pulses. A method is introduced for constructing two-color maps for the in-plane component of the magnetic field of our galaxy in (R, l) and (DM, l) coordinates. It is shown that, in agreement with the standard models of the galactic magnetic field, the magnetic field in neighboring spiral arms reverses direction. However, the magnetic field in the spiral arm of Sagittarius differs significantly from the standard magnetic field model, with the major difference being that the magnetic fields in the southern and northern hemispheres are oppositely directed in the spiral arm of Sagittarius. It is proposed that this distribution of the magnetic field can be explained best by assuming that the spiral arm of Sagittarius, or, at least, a magnetic spiral arm in that region, is not symmetric with respect to the galactic plane and lies mainly in the northern hemisphere.  相似文献

To test the hypothesis about the existence of two different subsystems of novae in the Galaxy, disk and bulge novae, we have constructed the spatial distribution of 64 novae in z coordinate. A large number of fast novae, believed to be disk novae, are at a considerable distance from the Galactic plane (up to z ~ 3700 pc), which cannot be explained by the photometric measurement errors. Slow novae, believed to be bulge novae, show a higher concentration to the Galactic plane (z ? 1700 pc). The application of the Kolmogorov-Smirnov test has shown that the hypothesis of two populations is valid with a probability of 95.6%.  相似文献

One of the most important topics in astrophysics concern to the study of how the stars are born. Observational facts show that nearly all stars were born in groups within large massive complexes of gas and dust. An idea almost universally accepted, comes from the fact that gas associated with star formation is very inhomogeneous over a large range of size scales. The stars need to be formed by the fragmentation of large gas complexes. Studies of the interstellar medium show the existence of a hierarchical structure covering at least four orders of magnitude in density and length scale.Recently various studies have been made in an attempt to understand the process, or processes, responsible for the decay of large scales to small ones. Several processes have been suggested, however, some of them seem to be responsible only for generating the hierarchical structure on small scales.A study of the velocity distribution of molecular clouds in the solar vicinity, shows the existence of large velocity gradients perpendicular to the galactic plane. With the help of empirical data concerning the latitudinal distribution of galactic gamma rays the contribution of inverse Compton scattered gamma rays is calculated using various models concerning the distribution of high energy cosmic ray electrons perpendicular to the galactic plane. It is shown that gamma ray astronomy from regions with vanishing stellar and interstellar matter densities at energies greater than 100 MeV provides instructive information on the cosmic ray electron density. We find evidence for the existence of a broad galactic electron disk with a total thickness of at least 6.4 kpc. The uncertainties of the cosmic ray electron spectrum measurements above 100 GeV imply an additional uncertainty in the inverse Compton source function of at least a factor 6.  相似文献

A survey of the H 272 α recombination line at 325 MHz has been made towards 53 directions in the galactic plane using the Ooty Radio Telescope (ORT). 34 of these directions correspond to well-known Hn regions, 12 to SNRs and 6 to ‘blank’ areas selected so that the 5 GHz continuum is a minimum over the telescope beam of 2ℴ x 6 arcmin. Observing procedure and spectra of 47 sources towards which lines are detected are presented. Hydrogen recombination lines have been detected towards all the observed directions havingl <40ℴ. Carbon recombination lines are identified in 12 of the directions. The hydrogen line intensities are found to correlate well with the total continuum intensity (which includes the nonthermal galactic background) indicating that most of the lines arise due to stimulated emission by the background radiation. A preliminary discussion on the nature of the line-emitting regions is also presented.  相似文献

A radio continuum map of a 1°5 X 1°5 region in the galactic plane nearl = 54° is presented at 49 cm with a resolution of 100 arcsec X 200 arcsec. The shell source G 54.4 - 0.3 has the characteristics of a supernova remnant while the second large ring structure G 53.9 + 0.3 is a Hn ring consisting of W 52 and several small-diameter thermal sources. One of the twelve small-diameter sources (G 54.73 + 0.61) has a spectral index⇏ -1.6.  相似文献

An attempt is made to present all the relevant observations of our galactic centre and to explain them by means of a working scheme that involves a minimum number ofad hoc assumptions.In this scheme, the central engine is Sgr A*, a supermassive star of some 103 M and surface temperature 3.6×104 K in Keplerian rotation, fuelled by the strongly magnetized disk. It drives both a non-thermal (pair-plasma) wind and a thermal wind. Interactions with the central star cluster and with the circumnuclear disk give rise to the thermal vortex Sgr A West and to the non-thermal spill-over bubble Sgr A East. The relativistic pair plasma escapes supersonically through the galactic chimney into the galactic twin jets, as in Seyfert galaxies.  相似文献

The 21-cm line intensities in a (Z, R) distribution is studied at the locus of tangential points of the inner parts of the Galaxy using both Northern and Southern data. A corrugation effect is observed in the galactic neutral hydrogen layer with an average wave length of 2 kpc and a wave amplitude of 70 pc. The patterns obtained for the I and the IV quadrant indicate that the inner and the outer parts of the spiral arms are located, respectively, below and above the galactic plane. Also, with high angular resolution the corrugation pattern suggests the existence of ‘faults’ in a geological sense in the inter arm zones. Optical studies of spatial distribution of early objects show good agreement with the neutral hydrogen results, indicating that the observed corrugation pattern is an indication of real distribution of matter in the galactic layer, and not of a kinematical effect.  相似文献

There is a long term dynamical heating of stellar populations with age observed in the age – velocity dispersion – relation (AVR). This effect allows a determination of the star formation history SFR(t) from local kinematical data of main sequence stars. Using a self-consistent disk model for the vertical structure of the disk, we find from the kinematics of the stars in the solar neighbourhood that the SFR shows a moderate star burst about 10 Gyr ago followed by a continuous decline to the present day value consistent with the observed number of OB stars. The gravitational potential of the gas component and of the Dark Matter Halo is included and the effect of chemical enrichment, finite lifetime of the stars and mass loss of the stellar component are taken into account. The scale heights for main sequence stars together with the SFR is then used to determine constistently the IMF from the observed local luminosity function. The main new result is that the power law break in the present day mass function (PDMF) around 1 M is entirely due to evolutionary effects of the disk and does not appear in the IMF.
