Effect of the typhoon passage on the western boundary region of a two-layer ocean with bottom topography is studied. The ocean is initially at rest and is set in motion by a typhoon passing parallel to the west coast. Equations that represent barotropic and baroclinic modes of motions are solved numerically by means of the method of finite differences. Motions of the barotropic mode are assumed to be horizontally non-divergent. In this mode, an elongated vortex is produced by the typhoon and propagates toward the south after passage of the typhoon. Behavior of the vortex may be interpreted as continental shelf waves. It is found that the formation and propagation of continental shelf waves are hardly affected by the density stratification. As for the baroclinic response, the typhoon causes considerable interface displacements along its track. The interface displacements are associated with geostrophic motions and remain for long time, though they are formed on the continental slope. Besides the large scale baroclinic response, internal Kelvin waves are induced along the artificial east wall.  相似文献

Properties of coastal trapped waves when the pycnocline intersects a sloping bottom are studied using a two-layer model which has slopes in both layers. In this system there is an infinite discrete sequence of modes, and four different sorts of waves exist: the barotropic Kelvin wave, the upper shelf wave, the lower shelf wave and the internal Kelvin-type wave. They all propagate with the coast to their right in the Northern Hemisphere. The upper and lower shelf waves are due to the topographic-effect on the upper-layer and lower-layer slopes, respectively. Their motions are dominant in the respective layers being accompanied by significant interface elevations. The properties of the upper (lower) shelf wave are almost unaffected by the existence of a lower-layer (upper-layer) slope. The motion of the internal Kelvin-type wave is confined to the region around the line where the density interface intersects the bottom slope.The modes, except that with the fastest phase speed (the barotropic Kelvin wave), are assigned mode numbers in order of descending frequency. Characteristics of Mode 1 change with wavenumber; the upper shelf wave for small wavenumbers and the internal Kelvin-type wave for large wavenumbers (high frequencies). The higher modes of Mode 2 and above can be classified into the upper and lower shelf waves.  相似文献

On the assumption that motions of the barotropic mode are horizontally nondivergent, action of the wind stress with longshore variation on a two-layer ocean adjacent to the meridional east coast is studied. Only the equatorward wind stress is considered. Along the east coast, upwelling is induced by the direct effect of the coast and is confined in a narrow strip with the width of the order of the internal radius of deformation. The upwelling propagates poleward with the internal gravity wave speed. Coastal upwelling induced by the wind stress with longshore variation may be interpreted as the generation and propagation of internal Kelvin waves. Associated with the coastal upwelling, the equatorward flow in the upper layer and the poleward flow in the lower layer are formed as an internal mode of motions. When the bottom topography with the continental shelf and slope is taken into account, occurrence of the poleward undercurrent is delayed by a few days because of the generation of continental shelf waves. And, after the forcing is stopped, the shelf waves propagate poleward away from the upwelling region and the poleward undercurrent fully develops. At the margin of the continental shelf, another upwelling region is induced and propagates poleward.  相似文献

A stability of planetary waves on an infinite beta-plane is investigated in an idealized two-layer fluid system for the large local Rossby numberM. When a primary wave is barotropic, two kinds of barotropic instability modes are found. One of them was previously discussed byGill (1974). When a primary wave is baroclinic, two different kinds of modes that enable barotropic and baroclinic energy transfers are found. The one that has the larger growth rate gains its energy mainly from the mean shear of the primary wave when the internal rotational Froude numberF is smaller than 1/2. WhenF is larger than 1/2, however, the available energy conversion of the primary wave is dominant. This mode has a fairly large part of its energy in the barotropic motion although the primary wave is purely baroclinic.The effect ofO(M –2) corrections is found to have a stabilizing influence on all symmetrical modes. The geophysical applications of the present analysis are suggested in the context.  相似文献

The radiation pattern of the tsunami generated by a broad crustal deformation on or near the continental shelf is examined analytically in the framework of a linear long-wave approximation. Detailed discussion, however, is made only for a model of step-type bottom topography.The proportion of the energy trapped on the shelf as edge wave modes relative to that radiated into deep water increases with the decrease of the long-shore dimension of the source. The nearer is the source to the coastline, the greater is the rate of total edge wave generation. However, the proportion of higher modes increases for the source near the shelf edge.The proportion of the wave energy radiated in deep water, normal to the coastline, increases with the increase of the long-shore dimension of the source and/or the decrease of the depth difference between the shelf and deep water. Furthermore, this proportion increases with the increased distance of the source location from the coastline and approaches the value for the case without a shelf. For a source of the square shape, the directive difference of energy radiation in deep water is mainly caused by the refractive effect of the shelf edge. For larger long-shore dimension of the source, however, the geometric shape effect of the source is more important to cause the directive difference.  相似文献

This paper discusses, in terms of the geometrical optics approximation, how large-scale bottom irregularities influence the propagation of Rossby waves in the ocean. To describe the major peculiarities of the phenomenon, a two-layer model is applied, with the depth of the upper layer being considerably smaller than that of the lower layer. However, even with the bottom topography being allowed for, the wave motion is described by two Rossby wave modes, namely, a barotropic mode and a baroclinic mode. It is demonstrated that barotropic mode transformation caused by large irregularities of the sea-floor may lead to wave interaction, resulting in their anomalous distribution. Transmission and reflection coefficients are calculated for Rossby waves incident on a bottom topography with constant slope in a continuously stratified ocean. The characteristics of the coefficients are interpreted in terms of the quasigeostrophic waves on the slope. In the parameter range where only the barotropic Rossby waves can propagate in the region outside the slope, the bottom trapped wave plays the same role as the topographic Rossby wave in a homogeneous ocean, and hence the transmission is weak unless phase matching takes place. When both of the barotropic and baroclinic Rossby waves can propagate outside the slope, the total transmission can be strong. The bottom trapped wave affects the transmission and reflection, and it leads to the possibility that the Rossby wave is transmitted as a mode different from the incident mode. When the number of the wavy modes on the slope is smaller than that of the Rossby wave modes outside the slope, strong reflection occurs.The results for an ocean with linear distribution of the squared Brunt-Väisälä frequency are compared to those in a uniformly stratified ocean. The weakening of the stratification near the bottom is almost equivalent to reducing the effect of the slope.  相似文献

基于一组简化了的运动方程组,在充分考虑底Ekman层作用的情况下,提出一种横穿锋面的断面上流场结构的计算方法。应用该方法对东海横穿黑潮锋的不同断面上的流场(1989-1990年资料)进行计算。结果表明,黑潮锋左侧(向岸侧)存在较强的上升流,而锋区右侧(离岸侧)表现为海水的下降运动。垂直流速为(1-20)×10-3cm/s的量级,而横穿锋面方向的水平流速为1-3cm/s,其中以夏、秋季跃层附近最强。在陆架坡折处,上升流转向陆架。同时,还分析了正压场和斜压场对这种流场的不同贡献,认为在黑潮区,正压场起主要作用;而在内陆架区,斜压场则变得重要。将计算的流场与硝酸盐的分布比较表明,两者有较好的对应关系。  相似文献

采用东沙岛附近的一个长达9个月的锚定潜标的观测资料对南海北部的正压潮、内潮和余流情况进行了分析,得到了当地正压潮和内潮的特征。此处正压潮流以全日潮为主,秋、冬季相对较大,春季相对较小;正压余流受海盆尺度环流和地形的限制,在潜标观测期间的秋、冬、春三季基本以偏西向的正压流为主。内潮同正压潮一样,也以全日分潮为主,潮流椭圆随水深发生旋转,在110—120m附近存在内潮非常弱的一层。斜压余流在2009年2—3月比较异常,这是由于在此其间有一个中尺度涡经过。对此潜标数据采用经验正交函数分解的方法进行分析,发现海流的各个主要EOF模态与内波的垂向模态结构有一定的关联。  相似文献

Within the framework of a two-layer model, we consider the process of, formation of livel in a closed basin under the action of a source with constant flow rate located on its boundary in the upper layer. The response of the level of the basin to the inflow of liquid is observed in the form of the baroclinic and barotropic modes. The baroclinic mode, has the form of an edge wave for which the deviation of level is positive for the upper layer and negative for the lower layer. The barotropic component of the level is almost spatially homogeneous and its intensity increases with time. The increase in the volume of the upper layer caused by the inflow of liquid on the boundary is almost completely attained in the barotropic mode. 基于2005年至2009年、2011年和2013年各年九月份南海开放航次获取的东北部120°E断面的水文观测资料,运用了地转流诊断和模态分解两种方法,研究了该断面流场结构和体积输运的年际变化特征。2005年、2006年、2007年和2013年流场呈显著斜压特征,断面上、下层流速方向相反;而2008、2009年和2011流场垂向变化不明显,呈现准正压结构。断面体积输运沿深度分布呈现三种方式:一致向西(2005年、2007年和2011年),上西下东(2008年和2013年)和上东下西(2006年和2009年)。断面净体积输运亦有显著年际变化,在2005年出现西向最大-11.2Sv,在2013年出现东向最大9.1Sv,而在2009年仅为西向-1.2Sv。模态分解表明,准正压结构的年份,流场主要被正压模态控制,但第一斜压亦不可忽略;而斜压结构的年份,流场由正压模和第一斜压模态共同主导。  相似文献

Current measurements were made at five moored stations over the continental shelf off the San'in coast of the Japan Sea for a month in the summer of 1980 to study the vertical structure of the nearshore branch of the Tsushima Current. The time-mean current for the observational period is 20 to 25 cm sec–1 eastward near the surface and about 10 cm sec–1 westward near the sea bottom except at the shallowest station. The time-mean current,i.e. the nearshore branch of the Tsushima Current is mainly due to the baroclinic modes. The currents are less variable in the first half of the observational period, but fluctuate with a several-day period in the latter half. The obtained current data were decomposed into barotropic and baroclinic modes to investigate the detailed characteristics of the fluctuations. In the latter half, the current fluctuations of the two modes with about a 5-day period are well correlated with each other, as the baroclinic mode lagging behind the barotropic mode by 12 hr. The barotropic current fluctuation is correlated to the sea level, with the former leading the latter by about 12 hr. The baroclinic current is correlated to the temperature at the subsurface layer with a shorter time lag.  相似文献

The abrupt depth increase which characterises the edge of many continental shelves determines a reduced horizontal length scale and a localised transition from shelf seas to the deep ocean. Particular forms of motion which may arise from the steep slopes include topographically guided currents along the slope, shelf-break upwelling, topographic Rossby waves and internal lee waves in the tidal current. The ocean/shelf mismatch may lead to a clear separation of water types, substantial reflection (from the shelf-edge neighbourhood) of all oceanic and shelf motions with periods greater than a few hours, and interaction between barotropic and baroclinic motions. Unstable longshelf currents, interleaving water masses, strong internal tides and internal waves, and narrow canyons enhance mixing across the shelf edge.  相似文献

We have determined the energetic and spatial characteristics of baroclinic and barotropic tidal semi-diurnal fluctuations using the current temperature and velocity data collected by 12 self-contained buoy stations (SCBS) near the shelf of the Republic of Guinea at depths ranging from 50 to 1000 m. Intensive baroclinic motion was observed to prevail near the bottom within the depth range 100–1000 m. The characteristics of free topographic trapped waves are investigated numerically for a two-layer model with basic flow, which is uniform, geostrophically balanced motion flowing parallel to the coast. Six modes are identified for this model with depth variations. They are external and internal Kelvin modes, a topographic Rossby mode, and additional three modes. The two of the additional modes are interesting. The first one is a quasi-geostrophic surface-trapped mode, while the second one is a quasi-geostrophic bottom-trapped mode. It is suggested that baroclinic instability takes place when these two modes take a resonance coupling each other.  相似文献
