The characteristics of galaxies with and without a bar in the infrared range are compared, using two complete samples that we have compiled. The data obtained show that star formation occurs more actively in barred galaxies than in galaxies without a bar, which it is natural to believe is a consequence of the presence of the bar itself. This is a statistical study of galaxies with a UV excess. A sample of 702 Kazarian galaxies (KG) is used. The KGs are identified with objects from the MAPS, IRAS FSC, IRAS PSC, and NVSS catalogs. The O and E magnitudes are known for more than 92% of the KGs. It is shown that the KG sample is complete up to 16m.0 in the blue and to 16m.5 in the red. More than 36% of the KGs are identified with infrared (IR) sources at wavelengths of 12, 25, 60, and 100 m. Calculations of the far IR (FIR) luminosities show that 4% of the KGs are strong FIR emitters (LFIR ≥ 1011 L). More than 32% of the KGs have been identified as radio sources at a frequency of 1.4 GHz. A determination of the radio luminosities shows that the sample of KGs with known radial velocities include one powerful, LR ≥ 1025 W/Hz, radio object (Kaz 273) which is a BL Lac object. A close correlation (r=0.93) is bound between the FIR and radio luminosities for galaxies with a UV excess. An examination of the relationship between the FIR and radio luminosities for galaxies in different spectral classes shows that the correlation coefficient is higher (r=0.99) and the slope of the fit curve is larger (a=1.18) for Seyfert galaxies. Calculations of the logarithm of the ratio of the FIR and radio fluxes indicate that the sample includes 4 KGs with a radio excess, while there are none with an IR excess. __________ Translated from Astrofizika, Vol. 50, No. 3, pp. 369–379 (August 2007).  相似文献

The relationship between the IR luminosity of spiral galaxies in the 40-120 mm range and their radio luminosity at 0.408,1.49,2.38,5.0, and 10.7 GHz is investigated. At all frequencies there is a close correlation between the radio luminosity and the infrared luminosity of spiral galaxies. The slopes of the relationships between radio and IR luminosities are less than unity at all frequencies, but they differ little from it within the error limits. A close correlation also exists between the fluxes of radio and IR emission. The correlation coefficients are high for objects of all morphological subtypes, while the relationships between radio and IR luminosities are nearly linear. They are also nearly linear for spiral galaxies of different classes in the Byurakan classification. It is also shown that the correlation between radio and IR luminosities is weakened for high IR luminosities. Translated from Astrofizika, Vol. 43, No. 1, pp. 33-44, January–March, 2000.  相似文献

Various characteristics of galaxies with and without a bar are compared in two complete samples compiled by the authors. It is found that the two types of spiral galaxies hardly differ from each other in a number of parameters and properties, such as nuclear activity and degree of concentration in groups. Star formation evidently occurs more efficiently in barred galaxies, however. Bars are encountered more often in intermediate and late subtypes of disk galaxies. Barred galaxies in groups are redder, on the average, than those outside of groups. Luminosity functions are constructed both for galaxies with and without bars. It is shown that objects with relatively flat radio emission spectra are mainly encountered among spiral galaxies of morphological subtypes Sa and Sab (including barred galaxies of these subtypes). Objects both with flat and with steep spectra are encountered among galaxies of morphological subtypes later than Sab. The near and mid-IR properties of barred and unbarred spiral galaxies are discussed on the basis of complete samples that were compiled earlier. The two types of spirals are shown not to differ from one another in emission power in the near and mid-IR ranges. Multiple regression and principal component analysis have been applied to investigate near and mid-IR properties of SB and SA galaxies, particularly their relation to X-ray and radio continuum emissions. There are definite differences between SB and SA spirals in the near and mid-IR. In the case of SB galaxies, the compactness of 10 m emission is closely related to the J - H color index, and the redder J - H color corresponds to relatively more extended emission at 10 m. It is assumed that these are caused by the bar itself, which stimulates enhanced star formation in a barred galaxy with respect to unbarred spiral.  相似文献

Distributions of the surface brightness and the surface color of five barred spiral galaxies expressed in the form of digital maps are presented. This is the first step to determine the composition of the components of barred spiral galaxies — bar, spiral arm, inner ring and outer ring — and to obtain an accurate picture of the dynamical model of a barred spiral galaxy. We have found that (a) the bar is redder than the spiral arm and has a color similar to that of the disk and (b) the inner ring of theSB(r) type galaxy is bluer than the bar and rather resembles the spiral arm.  相似文献

The redshift dependence of spectral index in powerful radio galaxies   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
We present and discuss in this paper the rest frame radio spectra (1–25 GHz) of a sample of fourteen radio galaxies atz >2 from the newly defined MRC/1Jy complete sample of 558 radio sources. These galaxies are among the most powerful radio sources known and range in luminosity from 1028-1028·8 watt Hz-1 at 1 GHz. We find that the median rest frame spectral index of this sample of galaxies atz >2 is significantly steeper than that of a matched luminosity sample of 3CRR galaxies which are at a much lower redshift (0.85 <z < 1.7). This indicates that spectral index correlates primarily with redshift, at least in the luminosity range considered here. The difference between the distributions of rest frame spectral curvatures for the two samples does not appear to be statistically significant. We suggest a new explanation for the steeper spectra of radio galaxies at high redshift involving steeper electron energy spectra at injection. Electron energy spectra are expected to steepen in a first-order Fermi acceleration process, at both non-relativistic and relativistic shock fronts, as the upstream fluid velocity decreases. This may well be the case at high redshifts: the hotter and denser circum-galactic medium at high redshifts could result in slower speeds for the hotspot and the jet material behind it. The smaller sizes of radio sources at higher redshifts provide support to this scenario. Since deceased.  相似文献

The gas properties of barred and unbarred spiral galaxies are compared in two complete samples. It is found that two types of spiral galaxies do not differ from each other in atomic and molecular gas contents. On average there is 6 times more HI than H2 in spiral galaxies and the ratio MH2/MHI decreases from early to late types. The barred and unbarred spirals in general show a similar behaviors of the gas-to-luminosity relationships, but also there are certain differences between them such as correlation of two gas phases (HI and H2)for unbarred galaxies. It is suggested that different behaviors of two types galaxies are due to the higher star forming activity of barred with respect unbarred spirals. The expected values of HI and H2 gas contents have been estimated using blue and far-infrared emission. Published in Astrofizika, Vol. 43, No. 3, pp. 405-410, July–September, 2000.  相似文献

The dust‐to‐gas ratios in three different samples of luminous, ultraluminous, and hyperluminous infrared galaxies are calculated by modelling their radio to soft X‐ray spectral energy distributions (SED) using composite models which account for the photoionizing radiation from H II regions, starbursts, or AGNs, and for shocks. The models are limited to a set which broadly reproduces the mid‐IR fine structure line ratios of local, IR bright, starburst galaxies. The results show that two types of clouds contribute to the IR emission. Those characterized by low shock velocities and low preshock densities explain the far‐IR dust emission, while those with higher velocities and densities contribute to the mid‐IR dust emission. Clouds with shock velocities of 500 km s–1 prevail in hyperluminous infrared galaxies. An AGN is found in nearly all of the ultraluminous infrared galaxies and in half of the luminous infrared galaxies of the sample. High IR luminosities depend on dust‐to‐gas ratios as high as ∼0.1 by mass, however most hyperluminous IR galaxies show dustto‐gas ratios much lower than those calculated for the luminous and ultraluminous IR galaxies. The relationship between the rotation curves for the galaxies and the distribution of mass and angular momentum within the galaxies is examined. The theory of angular momentum transfer is applied to the observed properties of the galaxies. The coupling between the dynamical mass of a spiral galaxy and its luminosity is studied. Most of the spiral galaxies in subclusters surrounding NGC 4889, NGC 4874, and NGC 4839 in the Coma cluster are galaxies that have lower luminosities, with MB fainter than −21m.5. These galaxies are characterized by a higher mass-to-luminosity ratio than that of the galaxies with higher luminosities MB brighter than −21m.5, which suggests the presence of a large fraction of dark matter in the spiral galaxies of the subclusters. Dense molecular medium plays essential roles in galaxies. As demonstrated by the tight and linear correlation between HCN(1–0) and FIR luminosities among star-forming galaxies, from very nearby to high-z ones, the observation of a dense molecular component is indispensable to understand the star formation laws in galaxies. In order to obtain a general picture of the global distributions of dense molecular medium in normal star-forming galaxies, we have conducted an extragalactic CO(3–2) imaging survey of nearby spiral galaxies using the Atacama Submillimeter Telescope Experiment (ASTE). From the survey (ADIoS; ASTE Dense gas Imaging of Star-forming galaxies), CO(3–2) images of M 83 and NGC 986 are presented. Emphasis is placed on the correlation between the CO(3–2)/CO(1–0) ratio and the star formation efficiency in galaxies. In the central regions of some active galaxies, on the other hand, we often find enhanced or overluminous HCN(1–0) emission. The HCN(1–0)/CO(1–0) and HCN(1–0)/HCO+(1–0) intensities are often enhanced up to ∼0.2–0.3 and ∼2–3, respectively. Such elevated ratios have never been observed in the nuclear starburst regions. One possible explanation for these high HCN(1–0)/CO(1–0) and HCN(1–0)/HCO+(1–0) ratios is X-ray induced chemistry in X-ray dominated regions (XDRs), i.e., the overabundance of the HCN molecule in the X-ray irradiated dense molecular tori. If this view is true, the known tight correlation between HCN(1–0) and the star-formation rate breaks in the vicinity of active nuclei. Although the interpretation of these ratios is still an open question, these ratios have a great potential for a new diagnostic tool for the energy sources of dusty galaxies in the ALMA era because these molecular lines are free from dust extinction.  相似文献

We have modelled 38 barred galaxies by using near-infrared and optical data from the Ohio State University Bright Spiral Galaxy Survey. We constructed the gravitational potentials of the galaxies from H -band photometry, assuming a constant mass-to-light ratio. The halo component we choose corresponds to the so-called universal rotation curve. In each case, we used the response of gaseous and stellar particle disc to rigidly rotating potential to determine the pattern speed.
We find that the pattern speed of the bar depends roughly on the morphological type. The average value of corotation resonance radius to bar radius,     , increases from 1.15 ± 0.25 in types SB0/a–SBab to 1.44 ± 0.29 in SBb and 1.82 ± 0.63 in SBbc–SBc. Within the error estimates for the pattern speed and bar radius, all galaxies of type SBab or earlier have a fast bar     , whereas the bars in later type galaxies include both fast and slow rotators. Of 16 later type galaxies with a nominal value of     , there are five cases, where the fast-rotating bar is ruled out by the adopted error estimates.
We also study the correlation between the parameter     and other galactic properties. The clearest correlation is with the bar size: the slowest bars are also the shortest bars when compared to the galaxy size. A weaker correlation is seen with bar strength in a sense that slow bars tend to be weaker. These correlations leave room for a possibility that the determined pattern speed in many galaxies corresponds to actually that of the spiral, which rotates more slowly than the bar. No clear correlation is seen with either the galaxy luminosity or the colour.  相似文献

HST observations have shown that low-redshift 3CR radio galaxies often exhibit a point-like optical component positionally coincident with the GHz-frequency radio core. In this paper we discuss the correlation between the luminosities of the radio, optical and X-ray cores in these objects, and argue that all three components have a common origin at the base of the relativistic jets. In unified models, FR I radio galaxies should appear as dimmed, redshifted versions of BL Lac objects. We show that such models are consistent with the spectral energy distributions of the radio galaxies only if the nuclear X-ray emission in radio galaxies is inverse Compton in origin.  相似文献

We study the spatial orientation of 5 169 galaxies that have radial velocity 3 000 to 5 000 km s−1. The ‘position angle–inclination’ method is used to find the spin vector and the projections of spin vector of the galaxy rotation axes. The spatial isotropic distribution is assumed to examine the non-random effects. For this, we have performed chi-square, Fourier, and auto-correlation tests. We found a random alignment of spin vectors of total galaxies with respect to the equatorial coordinate system. The spin vector projections of total galaxies is found to be oriented tangentially with respect to the equatorial center. The spiral galaxies show a similar orientation as shown by the total sample. Five subsamples of barred spiral (late-type) galaxies show a preferred alignment. However, early-type barred spirals show a random orientation. A weak morphological dependence is noticed in the subsamples of late type barred spirals. A comparison with the previous works and the possible explanation of the results will be presented.  相似文献

A radio survey, using the Very Large Array at 20 and 90 cm λ has been carried out in the direction of 46 distant Abell clusters (0.1 ≲ z ≲ 0.3) dominated by a cD galaxy (clusters classified to be Bautz-Morgan I type). A radio source coincident with the cD galaxy was detected in 16 clusters. We find that the radio luminosity function of the cD galaxies at 20cm λ, and below the luminosityP 1.4ghz ≲ 1024.5 W Hz-1, is similar to that of brightest ellipticals in less clustered environments. Above this luminosity, the cDs seem to have a higher probability of becoming radio sources. The effect of optical brightness on radio emission is shown to be the same for the two classes. No significantly large population of very-steep-spectrum sources with spectral index α >1.2 (flux density ∝ frequency) was found to be associated with cD galaxies. A significant negative correlation is found between the radio luminosity of the cD galaxy and the cooling-time of the intra cluster medium near the galaxy. We also present evidence that the probability of radio emission from first-ranked galaxies is dependent upon their location relative to the geometrical centres of clusters and thus related to the morphological class and the evolutionary state of the clusters. We argue that both these effects are primarily caused by the dynamical evolution of these distant clusters of galaxies.  相似文献

The relative orientations of the optical and radio axes of radio galaxies are analyzed using data for 271 objects. It is found that the radio axes correlate with the minor axes of the optical galaxies for more elongated radio galaxies (K > 2.5, where K is the ratio of the lengths of the major and minor axes of the radio image) and for radio galaxies of the class FRII, whereas for less elongated radio galaxies (K < 2.5) and radio galaxies of the class FRI the radio axes correlate with the major axes of the optical galaxy. In both cases the correlation turns out to be more significant when the radio galaxies are classified in terms of their elongation than when they are classified in terms of the Fanaroff-Riley criterion. The classification in terms of elongation of the radio image can therefore be of interest for understanding overall problems associated with the mechanism of formation and evolution of radio galaxies. A theoretical foundation for such a classification may be the alternative mechanism of formation of radio galaxies from relativistic plasma ejected from the central part of the optical galaxy and moving in its large-scale, dipole magnetic field. The behavior of the gaseous phase in a barred galaxy is followed by computer simulations of the gas flow in a fixed potential formed by a bar and a disk. The results support a hypothesis that the dark lanes observed on the leading side of the bar in many SB galaxies are coinciding with the shock waves. Furthermore the results reject an outflow explanation of the arms but suggest these to be formed mechanically by the bar. Ring-shaped features were not reproduced but double arms were occasionally detected.  相似文献
