Nine twentieth-century ordinary chondrite falls from China are described and classified. They include: Nantong (H6), Zaoyang (H5), Zhaodong (L4), Qidong (L-LL5), Raoyang (L6), Sheyang (L6), Guangnan (L6), Suizhou (L6) and Nan Yang Pao (L6). Kamacite in Qidong is rare and contains much more Co (15 mg/g) than is characteristic of L-group chondrites; Qidong may be a member of a chondrite group intermediate in its properties between L and LL. Zhaodong, Qidong, Raoyang, Sheyang and Suizhou have several olivine and/or low-Ca pyroxene grains with aberrant Fel(Fe + Mg) ratios; it is probable that these five chondrites are fragmental breccias. The lack of correlation between shock facies and occurrence of aberrant silicate grains suggests that breccia lithification caused only minimal shock effects in many meteorites. Alternatively, postshock annealing may have resulted in the recrystallization of shock-indicating phases, leading to assignment of a shock facies that is lower than that present immediately after the shock event.  相似文献

Abstract— We report the first petrologic examination of all stone meteorites of Fayette County, Texas. The 10 stones represent four or five different fall events. The three recovered Bluff stones represent two falls. Bluff (a), which includes the 145.5-kg Bluff #1 stone, is classified as L5(S4), whereas Bluff (b) is classified as L4(S3) and is represented by a single stone. The studied Cedar stones are classified as H4(S3), and all four Cedar stones appear to define a strewnfield. Round Top (a), classified as L5(S3) and represented by two stones, is unrelated to either Bluff or Cedar. Round Top (b) [H4(S3); 1 stone], whose exact provenance is unknown, might be a transported fragment of the Cedar shower.  相似文献

Abstract— We have classified 12 new, moderately to severely weathered meteorites from Roosevelt County, New Mexico (RC 079–090) that were recovered between 1969 and 1993. They include nine H chondrites and three L chondrites of petrologic types 4 to 6 and shock classification S1 to S4. Among these are a flight-oriented specimen of an H5 chondrite, an L4 chondrite with a porphyritic impact-melt rock clast, an H5 fragmental breccia with an unusual weathering assemblage (probably a Ca sulfate), and an H4 chondrite with unequilibrated pyroxenes.  相似文献

Abstract— Studies of 52 specimens recovered from the find site of the original Travis County meteorite reveal the presence of two distinct meteorites. Travis County (a), which includes the original Travis County meteorite, is the more abundant meteorite and is classified as an H5(S4) shock-blackened chondrite. Travis County (b) is classified as an H4(S2) chondrite with rare chondritic clasts of H group parentage, indicating that the meteorite is a breccia.  相似文献

Abstract— We report the histories and classifications of poorly known meteorites from the Oscar Monnig meteorite collection. Forestburg (a), Texas, is an L4(S2) ordinary chondrite. Forestburg (b), Texas, is a shock-blackened L5(S5) ordinary chondrite containing an impact-melt clast. Davy (a), Texas, L4(S2), is represented by several highly weathered stones. Davy (b), Texas, is a single stone classified as H4(S2). Harrison Township, Kansas, (L6(S4)) was found in the vicinity of several meteorites grouped as Ladder Creek but appears distinct. We have identified the second and largest fragment of the 1814 October Gurram Konda, India, L6(S3) meteorite fall and uncovered details of its early history.  相似文献

The topographic features on Venus are named with female names: craters and paterae have names of famous women as well as female first names, non-crater features have names of mythological characters. The first 80 names appeared on the maps after the Pioneer Venus mission; about 300 more names after the Venera 15 and 16 missions. 376 features of 17 types are now named. All the names are listed with their coordinates and attribute data. A large number of new names will be necessary after the MAGELLAN mission when detailed maps will be produced for nearly the whole surface of Venus.'Geology and Tectonics of Venus', special issue edited by Alexander T. Electron microprobe analyses and petrographic observations demonstrate that Almelo Township (L6), Beeler (LL6), Kalvesta (H4), Phillips County (L6), and Yocemento (L5) are typical ordinary chondrites. Selden has abnormally iron-rich silicates and nickel-rich metal, and it may have been a lower petrologic type that has been shocked to an LL5. Shielding corrected exposure ages range from 0.80 m.y. (Kalvesta) to 47.0 m.y. (Yocemento).  相似文献

A number of stony meteorite specimens, presumably from a single fall, have been recovered from an area about 5–6 miles north of Ransom, Kansas. This paper presents a map of discovery locations, so far as known. Megascopic appearance, external and internal, of a typical (?) specimen is described. The Ransom meteorite has already been classified as an olivine-bronzite chondrite — chemical group H of Van Schmus and Wood. Abstract— Six ordinary chondrite breccias from the Museo Nacional de Ciencias Naturales, Madrid (Spain), are described and classified as follows: the solar gas-rich regolith breccia Oviedo (H5); the pre-metamorphic fragmental breccias Cabezo de Mayo (type 6, L-LL), and Sevilla (LL4); the fragmental breccias Cañellas (H4) and Gerona (H5); and the impact melt breccia, Madrid (L6). We confirm that chondrites with typical light-dark structures and petrographic properties typical of regolith breccias may (Oviedo) or may not (Cañellas) be solar gas-rich. Cabezo de Mayo and Sevilla show convincing evidence that they were assembled prior to peak metamorphism and were equilibrated during subsequent reheating. These meteorites contain small melt rock clasts that were incorporated into the host chondrite while still molten and/or plastic and cooled rapidly and, yet, are totally equilibrated with their hosts. Compositions of olivine and low-Ca pyroxene in host chondrite and breccia clasts in Cabezo de Mayo are transitional between groups L and LL. It is suggested, based on mineralogic and oxygen isotopic compositions of host and clasts, that the rock formed on the L parent body by mixing, prior to peak metamorphism. This was followed by partial equilibration of two different materials: the indigenous L chondrite host and exotic LL melt rock clasts.  相似文献

Abstract— Thirteen new meteorites and three meteorite inclusions have been analyzed. Their results have been incorporated into earlier published data for a comprehensive reference to all analyzed meteorites at the Smithsonian Institution. The six tables facilitate a convenient overlook of meteorite data. Table 1 presents an alphabetical list of analyzed meteorites, Table 2 chemical analyses of stony meteorites, Table 3 chemical analyses of iron meteorites, Table 4 elemental composition of stony meteorites, Table 5 average composition of carbonaceous chondrites and achondrites (falls and finds), and Table 6 presents average composition of H, L, LL, and Antarctic chondrites (falls and finds). Abstract— We present a new single‐crystal X‐ray diffraction (XRD) study performed on a suite of six orthopyroxene grains from the low‐shocked H6 Trenzano meteorite. The quenched intracrystalline Fe2+‐Mg ordering state in orthopyroxene preserves the memory of the cooling rate near closure temperature Tc, thus yielding useful constraints on the last thermal event undergone by the host rock. The orthopyroxene Tc of 522 ± 13 °C, calculated using a new calibration equation obtained by Stimpfl (2005b), is higher than in previously published H chondrite data. The orthopyroxene cooling rate at this Tc is about 100 °C/kyr. This fast rate is inconsistent with the much slower cooling rate expected for H6 in the onion shell structural and thermal model of chondrite parent bodies. A petrographic study carried out at the same time indicated that the Trenzano meteorite is an H5 chondrite and not an H6 chondrite, as it is officially classified. Furthermore, the two‐pyroxene equilibrium temperature of Trenzano (824 ± 24 °C), calculated with QUILF95, is similar to the two‐pyroxene temperature of 750–840 °C obtained for the Carcote (H5) chondrite (Kleinschrot and Okrusch 1999).  相似文献

The Loop meteorite was found in 1962 in Gaines County, Texas, at a location very close to that where the Ashmore chondrite was found in 1969. The two specimens were assumed to be fragments of the same meteorite. The Loop meteorite is a type L6 chondrite composed of olivine (Fo75.4Fa24.6), orthopyroxene (En77.6Wo1.5Fs20.9), clinopyroxene (En47.5Wo45.1Fs7.4), plagioclase (Ab84.3Or5.5An10.2), Fe-Ni metal, troilite, and chromite. Fe-Ni metal is represented by kamacite (5.8-6.4 wt % Ni, 0.88-1.00 wt % Co), taenite (30.0–52.9 wt % Ni, 0.16-0.34 wt % Co), and plessite (16.8–28.5 wt % Ni, 0.38-0.54 wt % Co). Native copper occurs as rare inclusions in Fe-Ni metal. Both chondrules and matrix have similar mineral compositions. The mineral chemistry of the Loop meteorite is quite different from that of the Ashmore, which was classified as an H5 chondrite by Bryan and Kullerud (1975). Therefore, the Ashmore and Loop meteorites are two different chondrites, even though they were recovered from the same geographic location.  相似文献

Abstract— We report noble gas data for 37 H chondrites collected from the Allan Hills by EUROMET in the 1988–1989 field season. Among these are 16 specimens with high levels (>100 krad) of natural thermoluminescence (NTL), originally interpreted as signaling their derivation from a single meteoroid with an orbit that became Earth‐crossin‐100 ka ago. One of these 16 is an H3 chondrite with a cosmic‐ray exposure age of ~33 Ma and clearly represents a separate fall. The other 15 H4–6 chondrites derive from three separate meteoroids, each of which is represented by a five or six member group. These groups have mean exposure ages of 3.7, 4.1, and 6.6 Ma: the middle‐group members all contain solar Ne. The two younger groups also seem to each include a few H chondrites with normal NTL levels. Measurements of cosmogenic 10Be (1.5 Ma), 26AI (710 ka), and 36CI (301 ka) in 14 of the high‐NTL chondrites indicate that all reflect a simple irradiation history. In contrast, many of a different (38 member) randomly selected suite of Antarctic H chondrites seem to have different cosmic‐ray irradiation histories. The 3.7 and 6.6 Ma groups from the 37 member Allan Hills suite come from about 5–30 and about 5–10 cm depths in 80–125 and 60–125 cm radius meteoroids, respectively.  相似文献
