Summary. More than seventy underground nuclear explosions detonated in the Tuamotu Archipelago of French Polynesia have been detected on the short-period vertical Benioff seismograph at Rarotonga in the Cook Islands. Early data suggested that the duration of the T -phase provides a better estimate of the magnitude of the events than does the amplitude, but with more data now available it has been shown that amplitude is in fact the more reliable parameter. Data prior to 1980 are more scattered than those since. This appears to be related to the substantially different station network in those early years, compared with the later period, and suggests some unreliability in early data. Station corrections have been extracted and improved estimates of the magnitudes of the events obtained.  相似文献

We use the Direct Solution Method (DSM) together with the modified operators derived by Geller & Takeuchi (1995) and Takeuchi, Geller & Cummins (1996) to compute complete synthetic seismograms and their partial derivatives for laterally heterogeneous models in spherical coordinates. The methods presented in this paper are well suited to conducting waveform inversion for 3-D Earth structure. No assumptions of weak perturbation are necessary, although such approximations greatly improve computational efficiency when their use is appropriate.
An example calculation is presented in which the toroidal wavefield is calculated for an axisymmetric model for which velocity is dependent on depth and latitude but not longitude. The wavefield calculated using the DSM agrees well with wavefronts calculated by tracing rays. To demonstrate that our algorithm is not limited to weak, aspherical perturbations to a spherically symmetric structure, we consider a model for which the latitude-dependent part of the velocity structure is very strong.  相似文献

The ability of seismological criteria to identify earthquakes from underground explosions depends partly on the orientation of the earthquake source. Well-determined double-couple moment tensor solutions for a large number of earthquakes have been published in the Harvard centroid moment tensor (CMT) and United Slates Geological Survey (USGS) catalogues. Statistical analyses of these catalogues indicate that the distribution of the orientation of earthquake mechanisms is not random. The distribution of the T axes shows significant clustering around the downward vertical, indicating that a larger number of earthquake mechanisms radiate compressional P -wave energy to teleseismic distances from near the maximum of the radiation pattern than is predicted if earthquake sources are randomly oriented double couples. The clustered T axes correspond to compressional dip-slip mechanisms, and it is this type of mechanism which is believed to cause both the m b: M s (the ratio of body-wave to surface-wave magnitude) and first-motion criteria to misidentify an earthquake as an explosion.  相似文献

We propose approximate equations for P -wave ray theory Green's function for smooth inhomogeneous weakly anisotropic media. Equations are based on perturbation theory, in which deviations of anisotropy from isotropy are considered to be the first-order quantities. For evaluation of the approximate Green's function, earlier derived first-order ray tracing equations and in this paper derived first-order dynamic ray tracing equations are used.
The first-order ray theory P -wave Green's function for inhomogeneous, weakly anisotropic media of arbitrary symmetry depends, at most, on 15 weak-anisotropy parameters. For anisotropic media of higher-symmetry than monoclinic, all equations involved differ only slightly from the corresponding equations for isotropic media. For vanishing anisotropy, the equations reduce to equations for computation of standard ray theory Green's function for isotropic media. These properties make the proposed approximate Green's function an easy and natural substitute of traditional Green's function for isotropic media.
Numerical tests for configuration and models used in seismic prospecting indicate negligible dependence of accuracy of the approximate Green's function on inhomogeneity of the medium. Accuracy depends more strongly on strength of anisotropy in general and on angular variation of phase velocity due to anisotropy in particular. For example, for anisotropy of about 8 per cent, considered in the examples presented, the relative errors of the geometrical spreading are usually under 1 per cent; for anisotropy of about 20 per cent, however, they may locally reach as much as 20 per cent.  相似文献

From ACH tomographic models to absolute velocity models   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2  
The ACH method, a widely used tomographic inverse method, is characterized by the use of relative residuals in order to avoid possible biases coming from outside the target volume. The ACH method thus does not really retrieve the 3-D structure of the target volume, but instead leads to velocity contrasts relative to the layer average of the velocity, this average value remaining unknown ( Aki et al. 1977 ). Two artefacts derive from this particularity: (1) velocity contrasts are known only in the horizontal direction and it is not possible, in a strict mathematical sense, to estimate the contrasts in the vertical direction with ACH alone; (2) negative anomalies are often interpreted as low velocities, whereas negative anomalies may correspond to high velocities if the average value of the corresponding layer is sufficiently high. The converse is true of positive anomalies. We show with synthetic data how these artefacts can affect the interpretation of tomographic images. We propose to correct the artefacts by reintroducing the 1-D regional average model, and show in synthetic experiments how effective this correction can be.
  The application of this procedure to data recorded in the Kunlun region shows that the retrieval of the absolute values of the 3-D velocity model is helpful for interpreting the tomographic images and better defining which features are anomalous.  相似文献
