Using the sequence of 70-day continuum-band (751 nm) images from the Cassini Imaging Science System (ISS), we record over 500 compact oval spots and study their relation to the large-scale motions. The ∼100 spots whose vorticity could be measured—the large spots in most cases—were all anticyclonic. We exclude cyclonic features (chaotic regions) because they do not have a compact oval shape, but we do record their interactions with spots. We distinguish probable convective storms from other spots because they appear suddenly, grow rapidly, and are much brighter than their surroundings. The distribution of lifetimes for spots that appeared and disappeared during the 70-day period follows a decaying exponential with time constant (mean lifetime) of 3.5 days for probable convective storms and 16.8 days for all other spots. Extrapolating the exponential beyond 70 days seriously underestimates the number of spots that existed for the entire 70-day period. This and other evidences (size, shape, distribution in latitude) suggest that these long-lived spots with lifetime larger than 70 days are from a separate population. The zonal wind profile obtained manually by tracking individual features (this study) agrees with that obtained automatically by correlating brightness variations in narrow latitude bands (Porco et al., 2003). Some westward jets have developed more curvature and some have developed less curvature since Voyager times, but the number of westward jets that violate the barotropic stability criterion is about the same. In the northern hemisphere the number of spots is greatest at the latitudes of the westward jets, which are the most unstable regions according to the barotropic stability criterion. During the 70-day observation period the Great Red Spot (GRS) absorbed nine westward-moving spots that originated in the South Equatorial Belt (SEB), where most of the probable convective storms originate. Although the probable convective storms do not directly transform themselves into westward-moving spots, their common origin in the SEB suggests that moist convection and the westward jet compose a system that has maintained the GRS over its long lifetime.  相似文献

The age distribution of galactic clusters is obtained from well-observed star clusters, and it is concluded that the observed age distribution of clusters within 1000 pc is not seriously affected by the selection effects. If we assume that the rate of formation of clusters is constant, the observed age distributions of clusters for Trumpler's different richness classes have been obtained; and it is found that the rich clusters have longer lifetimes than the poor clusters.The lifetimes of clusters log(1/2) for different richness classes obtained in the present study differ significantly from the lifetimes obtained by Janes and Adler (1982), because the lifetimes obtained by Janes and Adler may have been affected by the age-dependent selection effects which grow with increasing distance. From the observed age distribution of all clusters within 1000 pc the results obtained in the present study are in close agreement with the lifetimes obtained by Wielen (1971a).  相似文献

By using a large number (452) of individual sunspots or individual sunspots with small spots around them, taken from the Greenwich Photoheliographic Results (GPR) for the years 1964–1976 that cover solar cycle No. 20, it is shown that the rotation velocity of the sunspots varies with their lifetimes. This investigation indicates that at the equator, the rotation rate for the last three days (of the lifetime) is about 1.3% slower than that over the whole lifetime and about 0.5% slower than during the first three days, but this is reversed at high and low latitudes, and the difference is much larger in the northern hemisphere than in the southern hemisphere. These results confirm to the fact that the rotation rate of the solar layers increases with depth.  相似文献

Photometry inV andB with a 16inch automatic telescope from 1988 to 1991 confirms the synchronous rotation suspected earlier and reveals variability up to 0M.10 in theB bandpass at one epoch. Five spots formed with lifetimes ranging from 0.15 to 0.77 years. As with other rapid rotators, the differential rotation coefficient (k = 0.03) is significantly smaller than that of the Sun (k = 0.19).  相似文献

An excellent high-resolution movie in the green continuum was produced by shift-and-add treatment of two 60-min videotapes obtained at the Big Bear Solar Observatory. We have studied the digitized images by direct measurement, cross-correlation techniques, and correlation tracking. The seeing-limited resolution was about 0.3 arc sec.While the cross-correlation lifetime for granules is about five minutes, we find that actually tracking the growth and decay of a granule gives lifetimes from 10 to 22 minutes, the longest lifetimes pertaining to the largest granules. The longer lifetime comes from tracking the granule while it undergoes large changes in size and shape, while the cross-correlation lifetime is just the time in which it grows by a factor two. All the granules followed began as small elements, grew to some size, and either faded (88%), exploded (2%) or were hit by an exploding granule (10%). The major variation in granule structure appears to be due to substantial variations in the dark lanes, which often double in width.The granulation shows the typical exploding granule behavior; we find the probability that any granule will be affected by an exploding granule during its lifetime to be 10%. We also observed a larger scale explosion covering about 10 granules. This explosion was marked by rapid (1 km s–1) outward flux of the granules.We tracked the development of six small pores, one of which could be followed for two hours. The latter showed four maxima of absorption separated by about 30 min each, virtually disappearing in between. Another was observed to form in about 20 min, but no changes occur in less than granule lifetime.We confirm the inflow in penumbral fibrils observed by Muller. The inflow velocity is about 0.5 km s–1, and all bright spots disappear into the umbra. The inflow which affects bright and dark features in the penumbral fibrils, is also observed in the smaller spots. We surmise that the Evershed flow is limited to the areas between the bright fibrils. We confirm granular outflow outside the penumbra.  相似文献

We present results of a statistical study of reversed-polarity regions, RPRs, collected over the past 11 years, 1969–1979.The 58 RPRs we studied have a lifespan comparable to normal active regions and have no tendency to rotate toward a more normal alignment. They seem to have stable configurations with no apparent evidence suggesting stress due to their anomalous magnetic alignment. Magnetic complexity in RPRs is the key to flare productivity just as it is in normal regions: Our weak field RPRs produce no flares and regions with complex spots produce more flares than regions with non-complex spots by a factor of 5.The RPRs however, differ from normal regions in the frequency of having complex spots, particularly the long-lived complex spots, in them. Less than 17% of normal ARs have complex spots; less than 1.8% have long-lived complex spots. In contrast, 41% of RPRs have complex spots and 24% have long-lived complex spots.  相似文献

The 1974/1975 Jupiter apparition is described. Photographic images have been measured and zonal velocities are given for all spots observed on four or more dates. Global and localized zonal flow patterns are graphically presented. Methane absorption band imagery at 890 nm indicates that white ovals and red spots are high in altitude, and blue features are cloud-free areas. The motions of blue features are complex and unlike the motions of other features. Interactions or associations between spots at five adjacent atmospheric currents have been observed. Zonal motion within an equatorial plume has been observed. Evidence is presented for a probable source of red spots in the North Tropical Zone.  相似文献

The Viking Gas Chromatograph Mass Spectrometer failed to detect organic compounds on Mars, and both the Viking Labeled Release and the Viking Gas Exchange experiments indicated a reactive soil surface. These results have led to the widespread belief that there are oxidants in the martian soil. Since H2O2 is produced by photochemical processes in the atmosphere of Mars, and has been shown in the laboratory to reproduce closely the Viking LR results, it is a likely candidate for a martian soil oxidant. Here, we report on the results of a coupled soil/atmosphere transport model for H2O2 on Mars. Upon diffusing into the soil, its concentration is determined by the extent to which it is adsorbed and by the rate at which it is catalytically destroyed. An analytical model for calculating the distribution of H2O2 in the martian atmosphere and soil is developed. The concentration of H2O2 in the soil is shown to go to zero at a finite depth, a consequence of the nonlinear soil diffusion equation. The model is parameterized in terms of an unknown quantity, the lifetime of H2O2 against heterogeneous catalytic destruction in the soil. Calculated concentrations are compared with a H2O2 concentration of 30 nmoles/cm3, inferred from the Viking Labeled Release experiment. A significant result of this model is that for a wide range of H2O2 lifetimes (up to 10(5) years), the extinction depth was found to be less than 3 m. The maximum possible concentration in the top 4 cm is calculated to be approximately 240 nmoles/cm3, achieved with lifetimes of greater than 1000 years. Concentrations higher than 30 nmoles/cm3 require lifetimes of greater than 4.3 terrestrial years. For a wide range of H2O2 lifetimes, it was found that the atmospheric concentration is only weakly coupled with soil loss processes. Losses to the soil become significant only when lifetimes are less than a few hours. If there are depths below which H2O2 is not transported, it is plausible that organic compounds, protected from an oxidizing environment, may still exist. They would have been deposited by meteors, or be the organic remains of past life.  相似文献

The lifetimes of three short-lived levels belonging to the 4f96p configuration and of two long-lived levels of the 4f95d configuration of Dy  iii have been measured for the first time using time-resolved laser-induced fluorescence techniques. They are in good agreement with theoretical values calculated within the framework of a pseudo-relativistic configuration interaction approximation. Using the experimental lifetimes and the theoretical branching fractions, a first set of transition probabilities of astrophysical interest has been obtained for Dy  iii .  相似文献

Infrared images of Jupiter have been obtained on 5 nights before, during and shortly after the period of the impacts of the fragments of comet Shoemaker-Levy 9 (1993e) with the giant planet. Long lived bright spots produced by the impacts have been measured and analyzed. By measuring the intensity variation of the spots as a function of Jupiter rotation we show that these spots are likely constituted by large and thin clouds of dust located above the methane layer. The multicolor light curves (UBVRI) of HU Vir have been analyzed to study starspots for epochs 1987 and 1989. The term 'photometric imaging' has been used for predicting cool surface spots by photometric data. Assuming the number of spots and the area are about the same for the two hemispheres, the distributive solar analogy is introduced as a tool to constrain free values of spot parameters into unique values. Therefore, final fitting parameters are claimed unique in a sense that they are independent of free initial guesses. The light and color variations of HU Vir are better explained without polar spots. Finally, the spots are found to be ∼ 1600 K cooler than the T∼ 5000 K of this cool subgiant and cover ∼ %13.9 of the total surface at ±8.0 degrees from the equator for the epoch 1987. The spots at the epoch 1989 are found to be ∼ 2040 K cooler covering ∼ % 12.7 area at ± 27°.7 latitudes. Problems of photometric imaging and possible solutions with distributive solar analogy have been discussed. Radiative lifetimes of 17 excited levels in Zr  i , in the energy interval 29 000–40 974 cm−1, have been investigated using the time-resolved laser-induced fluorescence method. The levels belong to the 4d25s5p, 4d35p and 4d5s25p electronic configurations and were excited in a single-step process from either the ground term, 4d25s2 a 3F, or from the low-lying 4d25s2 a 3P and a 5F terms. For three levels, we confirm previous measurements while for 14 of the levels the lifetimes have been measured for the first time. The experimental results are compared to theoretical calculations performed with a multiconfiguration relativistic Hartree–Fock method including core-polarization effects. Theoretical transition probabilities of astrophysical interest, scaled by the experimental lifetimes, for the depopulating channels of the investigated levels are also presented.  相似文献

A variety of recent resurfacing features have been observed on Europa, which may produce thermal anomalies detectable by a future mission. However, the likelihood of such a detection depends on their size and lifetimes. The results of this numerical study suggest that the lifetime of a thermal anomaly associated with the emplacement of 100 m of water onto the surface of Europa is several hundred years, and ∼10 years for 10 m of water. If warm ice is emplaced on the surface instead of liquid water, these lifetimes decrease by up to a factor of two. Exploration of model parameters indicates that a thin insulating surface layer can double thermal anomaly lifetimes, anomalies emplaced at a latitude of 80° can remain detectable nearly a factor of two longer than those at equatorial latitudes, and anomalies on the night side can remain detectable for up to ∼20% longer than those on the day side. High temperatures are very short-lived as the surface ice cools very rapidly to below 200 K due to sublimation cooling. Assuming steady-state resurfacing, the number of detectable thermal anomalies associated with the emplacement of 100 m of water would be on the order of 10 if the typical resurfacing area is 15 km2. If recent resurfacing is dominated by chaos regions with typical areas of 100 to 1000 km2 and lifetimes of 1000 to 4000 years, the number of detectable thermal anomalies would be on the order of 1 to 10.  相似文献

MERLIN observations are presented of OH 4765-MHz and OH 1720-MHz masers in the massive star-forming region W3(OH). Two of the three intense spots of maser emission at 4765 MHz are spatially coincident with two similar spots at 1720 MHz in both left-hand circular (LHC) and right-hand circular (RHC) polarizations, to an accuracy of 15 mas. The spots also overlap in velocity when allowance is made for Zeeman splitting of the 1720-MHz line. We conclude that we have found two examples of masers in different rotational levels of OH which are co-propagating through the same column of gas and experiencing competitive gain effects. The third 4765-MHz maser spot was found to have no overlapping counterpart amongst the 1720-MHz masers.  相似文献

Probing sunspot magnetic fields with p-mode absorption and phase shift data   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
Long-standing observations of incoming and outgoing f- and p-modes in annuli around sunspots reveal that the spots partially absorb and substantially shift the phase of waves incident upon them. The commonly favoured absorption mechanism is partial conversion to slow magneto-acoustic waves that disappear into the solar interior channelled by the magnetic field of the sunspot. However, up until now, only f-mode absorption could be accounted for quantitatively by this means. Based on vertical magnetic field models, the absorption of p-modes was insufficient. In this paper, we use the new calculations of Crouch & Cally for inclined fields, and a simplified model of the interaction between spot interior and exterior. We find excellent agreement with phase shift data assuming field angles from the vertical in excess of 30° and Alfvén/acoustic equipartition depths of around 600–800 km. The absorption of f-modes produced by such models is considerably larger than is observed, but consistent with numerical simulations. On the other hand, p-mode absorption is generally consistent with observed values, up to some moderate frequency dependent on radial order. Thereafter, it is too large, assuming absorbing regions comparable in size to the inferred phase-shifting region. The excess absorption produced by the models is in stark contrast with previous calculations based on a vertical magnetic field, and is probably due to finite mode lifetimes and excess emission in acoustic glories. The excellent agreement of phase shift predictions with observational data allows some degree of probing of subsurface field strengths, and opens up the possibility of more accurate inversions using improved models. Most importantly, though, we have confirmed that slow mode conversion is a viable, and indeed the likely, cause of the observed absorption and phase shifts.  相似文献

The global signature of granulation, meso- and supergranulation is calculated using values for intensities and lifetimes from spatially resolved observations. These simulations are compared with observations from ACRIM, IPHIR and the SOVA-1 photometers. The results indicate that the overall shape of the background signal in the simulations reproduce the observations at low frequency. However when the granulation lifetimes are about 500 seconds the simulated data do not correspond to the observations between 1 and 2 mHz.  相似文献

Mariner 9 photographs of the southern hemisphere of Mars taken during the 1971 planet-wide dust storm display circular bright spots at a time when all near-surface features were totally obscured. Correlating the positions and diameters of these spots with topography shows that they correspond to craters. About half of all the large craters in thestudy area were brightened. The associated craters are large and flat-floored, have significant rim uplift, and contain dark splotches on their floors. The depth/diameter relationship of the bright spot craters is comparable to that of a planet-wide sample. Depth may not be important in selectively brightening certain craters. The visibility of bright spots in A-camera photographs is strongly dependent on the wavelength of the filter used during exposure. It is proposed that bright spots result from the multiple scattering of incident light in dust clouds entrained within craters during dust storms. The appearance of the dust clouds is a function of the availability of a dust supply and, perhaps, air turbulence generated by winds flowing over upraised rims and rough crater floors. Bright spots persist during the final stage of the planet-wide dust storm. If bright spots are dust clouds, this persistence demonstrates that crater interiors are the last regions of clearing.  相似文献
