COSTprof is an empirical three dimensional ionospheric model which has been adopted in its regional monthly median form as an end product of the COST 251 Action. As this, it uses monthly median maps for the critical frequencies foE, foF1 and for the F2-layer transfer parameter M(3000)F2. For some applications COSTprof would gain in value with a refined E-layer and E-F1-transition formulation of the International Reference Ionosphere (see Rawer et al., 1981). We report on possibilities to join the two models together, producing a hybrid model with the IRI E-layer and E-F1 transition and the COSTprof formulation above. We also report on profile joining problems in general and present possible solutions with emphasis on improving the electron density profiles in E-layer heights.  相似文献

The transient response of the topside ionosphere to precipitation   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
A numerical time-dependent model of the topside and F-layer ionosphere is used to describe how the density of O+ ions and the plasma temperatures change as a result of transient electron precipitation with a soft energy spectrum (ca. 100 eV per electron). The response time for electron gas heating is about 2 min; for changes in topside scale height it is from 5 to 15 min, depending on altitude; and for changes in F-layer peak density, it is more than an hour. The low-density topside ion gas is thermally isolated on a short time scale; consequently the ion temperature responds almost adiabatically to volume changes. A transient precipitation event (of, say, 10 min duration) initiates a disturbance that propagates upward at approximately the sonic upeed in the plasma (ca. 2km/s), growing in amplitude with height. Such an event has little effect on the density at the peak of the F layer. An element of ionosphere that drifts horizontally in an antisunward direction through the magnetospheric cleft and into the polar cap recieves some ionization from the cleft, but not enough to be decisive in its survival. The collapse of the topside when heating is removed increases temporarily the density of the F layer.  相似文献

A fully time dependent mathematical model of the thermal plasma at L = 1.4 is described. In the mathematical model account is taken of a quiet-time E × B drift in the meridional plane. Atmospheric conditions appropriate to equinox at sunspot minimum and at sunspot maximum are considered. Results of the model calculations are presented. Emphasis is placed on the effects on the thermal plasma of a quiet-time E × B drift in the meridional plane. A comparison of the model calculations which include an E × B drift with those in which there is no E × B drift shows than an E × B drift significantly affects the plasma concentration and temperature distributions during the day at both sunspot minimum and sunspot maximum; the effects at night are very small. An upward E × B drift during the day increases both NmF2 and hmF2 and decreases the plasma temperature. The decrease in plasma temperature is due primarily to the increase in plasma concentration. It is more pronounced in the electron temperature than in the ion temperature and it varies considerably with altitude, time and atmospheric conditions. The changes in plasma concentration and temperature brought about by an E × B drift also change the O+-H+ transition height and the O+ and H+ tube contents. For the E × B drifts considered the O+-H+ transition height is raised during the morning and lowered during the afternoon. The changes in O+ tube content roughly follow the changes in NmF2. The changes in H+ tube content, however, are small since the H+ tube content is controlled by the H+ concentration at the higher altitudes of the tube of plasma and these concentration values are only slightly affected by the E × B drifts considered.  相似文献

Monthly median maps of ionospheric foF2 parameter show considerable discrepancies between the actual measurements and the values detected from the maps. Different instantaneous mapping techniques applied to randomly sparsed measurements give better agreement than monthly median maps. The objective of this paper is to present the PLES instantaneous mapping model for foF2 and M(3000)F2 that has been recommended as the best achievement of the COST 251 European Action. The method combines monthly median maps of ionospheric characteristic and a set of screen points consisting of measurements for a single moment of time as well as single station long-term models.  相似文献

A mathematical model has been developed to calculate consistent values for the O+ and H+ concentrations and field-aligned velocities and for the O+, H+ and electron temperatures in the night-time equatorial topside ionosphere. Using the results of the model calculations a study is made to establish the ability of F-region neutral air winds to produce observed ion temperature distributions and to investigate the characteristics of ion temperature troughs as functions of altitude, latitude and ionospheric composition. Solar activity conditions that give exospheric neutral gas temperatures 600 K, 800 K and 1000 K are considered. It is shown that the O+-H+ transition height represents an altitude limit above which ion cooling due to adiabatic expansion of the plasma is extremely small. The neutral atmosphere imposes a lower altitude limit since the neutral atmosphere quenches any ion cooling which field-aligned transport tends to produce. The northern and southern edges of the ion temperature troughs are shown to be restricted to a range of dip latitudes, the limiting dip latitudes being determined by the magnetic field line geometry and by the functional form of the F-region neutral air wind velocity. Both these parameters considerably influence the interaction between the neutral air and the plasma within magnetic flux tubes.  相似文献

Additional studies of the ion composition results obtained from the OGO-6 satellite support earlier observations of irregularities in the distribution of H+ and He+ within the light ion trough near L = 4, which has been associated with the plasmapause. These irregularities are in the form of sub-troughs superimposed upon the major mid latitude decrease of the light ions. In the sub-troughs, ionization depletions and recoveries of as much as an order of magnitude are observed within a few degrees of latitude, usually exhibited in a pattern which changes significantly with longitude as the Earth rotates beneath the relatively fixed satellite orbit. The location and properties exhibited by these sub-troughs appear to be consistent with the concept of a plasmasphere distortion in the form of “plasmatails” resulting from the combined effects of magnetospheric convection plus corotation. Like the light ion trough, the “plasmatail” irregularity in H+ may be obscured on the day side by the dominant topside distribution of O+. Consequently, these light ion irregularities are seen as an important factor for studies of plasmapause-trough relationships.  相似文献

The occultation of the Pioneer 10 spacecraft by Io (JI) provided an opportunity to obtain two S-band radio occultation measurements of its atmosphere. The dayside entry measurements revealed an ionosphere having a peak density of about 6 × 104 elcm?3 at an altitude of about 100 km. The topside scale height indicates a plasma temperature of about 406 K if it is composed of Na+ and 495 K if N2+ is principal ion. A thinner and less dense ionosphere was observed on the exit (night side), having a peak density of 9 × 103 elcm?3 at an altitude of 50 km. The topside plasma temperature is 160 K for N2? and 131 K for Na+. If the ionosphere is produced by photoionization in a manner analogous to the ionospheres of the terrestrial planets, the density of neutral particles at the surface of Io is less than 1011?1012 cm3, corresponding to a surface pressure of less than 10?8 to 10?9 bars. Two measurements of its radius were also obtained yielding a value of 1830 km for the entry and 192 km for the exit. The discrepancy between these values may indicate an ephemeris uncertainty of about 45 km. The two measurements yield an average radius of 1875 km, which is not in agreement with the results of the Beta Scorpii stellar occultation.  相似文献

The thickness of the peak of the ionosphere depends primarily on the temperature T n of the neutral gas, and corresponds approximately to an α-Chapman layer at a temperature of 0.87T n. The overall slab thickness, as given by Faraday rotation measurements, is then τ =0.22 n + 7km. Expansion of the topside ionosphere, and changes in the E-andFl-regions increase τ by about 20 km during the day in summer. Near solar minimum τ is increased by a lowering of the O +/H + transition height; if the neutral temperature T n is estimated, this height can be obtained from observed values of τ.Hourly values of slab thickness were determined over a period of 6 yr at 34°S and 42°S. Near solar maximum the night-time values were about 260 km in all seasons. The corresponding neutral temperatures agree with satellite drag values; they show a semiannual variation of 14 per cent and a seasonal change of 5 per cent. Daytime values of τ were about 230 km in winter and 320 km in summer, implying a seasonal change of 30 per cent in T n. Temperatures increase steadily throughout the day in all seasons, with a rapid post-sunset cooling in summer. Downwards movements produce a large peak in τ at 0600 hr in winter. A large upwards flux, equal to about 40 per cent of the maximum (limiting) value, reduces τ for several hours after sunrise in winter. The slab thickness increases near solar minimum showing a reduction of the O +/H + transition height to about 700 km in summer and 500 km in winter.  相似文献

The Space - Weighted Ionospheric Local Model, SWILM, is an alternative approach developed for the regional long-term mapping and modelling of the plasma frequency of the F2 layer, foF2, and the M(3000)F2 propagation factor. This model is based on the past monthly medians data from several vertical sounding stations in the region of interest and on the R12 index as indicator of the solar activity. In order to allow users to switch to a planetary scale, a good merge with the global ITU-R (Radiocommunication Sector of the International Telecommunication Union) model is also provided by SWILM with acceptable gradients at the borders of the region. In this paper the basic formulation of the model will be given and the results will be shown as obtained by comparing SWILM and ITU-R performances for mapping and modelling the fbF2 and the M(3000)F2 over a geographic area ranged between 35°–70°N and 10°W–60°E.  相似文献

Steady-state calculations are performed for the daytime equatorial F2-region and topside ionosphere. Values are calculated of the electron and ion temperatures and the concentrations and field-aligned velocities of the ions O+, H+ and He+. Account is taken of upward E × B drift, a summer-winter horizontal neutral air wind and heating of the electron gas by thermalization of fast photoelectrons. The calculated plasma temperatures are in accord with experiment: at the equator there is an isothermal region from about 400–550 km altitude, with temperatures of about 2400 K around 800 km altitude. The transequatorial O+ breeze flux from summer to winter in the topside ionosphere is not greatly affected by the elevated plasma temperatures. The field-aligned velocities of H+ and He+ depend strongly on the O+ field-aligned velocity and on the presence of large temperature gradients. For the minor ions, ion-ion drag with O+ cannot be neglected for the topside ionosphere.  相似文献

Extensive calculations have been made of the behaviour of He+ for situations where ion outflow occurs from the topside ionosphere. For these circumstances, steady state solutions for the He+ continuity, momentum and energy equations have been obtained self-consistently, yielding density, velocity and temperature profiles of He+ from 200 to 2000 km altitude. To model the high latitude topside ionosphere, a range of background H+O+ ionospheres was considered with variations in the H+ outflow velocity, the presence of a perpendicular electric field and different peak O+ densities. In addition, the atmospheric density of neutral helium was chosen to model typical observed winter and summer densities. From our studies we have found that: (a) The outflowing He+ has density profiles of similar shape to those of H+, for basically different reasons; (b) The effect of the perpendicular electric field differs considerably for H+ and He+. This difference stems from the fact that an electric field acts to alter significantly the O+ density at high altitudes and this, in turn, changes the H+ escape flux through the O++H charge exchange reaction. A similar situation does not occur for He+ and therefore the He+ escape flux exhibits a negligibly small change with electric field; (c) The fractional heating of He+ due to the He+O+ relative flow is not as effective in heating He+ as the H+O+ relative flow is in heating H+; (d) During magnetospheric disturbances when the N2 density at the altitude of the He+ peak (600 km) can increase by a factor as large as 50, the He+ peak density decreases only by approximately a factor of 2; and (e) The He+ escape flux over the winter pole is approximately a factor of 20 greater than the He+ escape flux over the summer pole. Consequently, on high latitude closed field lines there could be an interhemispheric He+ flux from winter to summer.  相似文献

We have studied the extent to which diffusion-thermal heat flow affects H+ temperatures in the high-latitude topside ionosphere. Such a heat flow occurs whenever there are H+?O+ relative drifts. From our study we have found that at high-latitudes, where H+ flows up and out of the topside ionosphere, diffusion-thermal heat flow acts to reduce H+ temperatures by 500–600 K at altitudes above about 900 km.  相似文献

Vertical profiles of electron density obtained in the vicinity of the plasmapause using the Alouette-II topside sounder have been analyzed to assess the presence of H+ flow in the topside ionosphere. The observations in the midnight sector show clearly the presence of the plasmapause; i.e. there is a sharp boundary separating the poleward regions of polar wind H+ flow and the more gentle conditions of the plasmasphere where light ions are present in abundance. In contrast, in the sunlit morning sector upwards H+ flow is deduced to be present to invariant latitudes as low as 48° (L = 2·2) in the regions normally known to be well inside the plasmasphere. The upwards H+ flux is sufficiently large (3 × 108 ions cm?2 sec?1) that the plasmapause cannot be seen in the latitudinal electron density contours of the topside ionosphere. The cause for this flow remains unknown but it may be a result of a diurnal refilling process.  相似文献

A time-dependent one-dimensional model of Saturn's ionosphere has been developed as an intermediate step towards a fully coupled Saturn Thermosphere-Ionosphere Model (STIM). A global circulation model (GCM) of the thermosphere provides the latitude and local time dependent neutral atmosphere, from which a globally varying ionosphere is calculated. Four ion species are used (H+, H+2, H+3, and He+) with current cross-sections and reaction rates, and the SOLAR2000 model for the Sun's irradiance. Occultation data from the Voyager photopolarimeter system (PPS) are adapted to model the radial profile of the ultraviolet (UV) optical depth of the rings. Diurnal electron density peak values and heights are generated for all latitudes and two seasons under solar minimum and solar maximum conditions, both with and without shadowing from the rings. Saturn's lower ionosphere is shown to be in photochemical equilibrium, whereas diffusive processes are important in the topside. In agreement with previous 1-D models, the ionosphere is dominated by H+ and H+3, with a peak electron density of ∼104 electrons cm−3. At low- and mid-latitudes, H+ is the dominant ion, and the electron density exhibits a diurnal maximum during the mid-afternoon. At higher latitudes and shadowed latitudes (smaller ionizing fluxes), the diurnal maximum retreats towards noon, and the ratio of [H+]/[H+3] decreases, with H+3 becoming the dominant ion at altitudes near the peak (∼1200-1600 km) for noon-time hours. Shadowing from the rings leads to attenuation of solar flux, the magnitude and latitudinal structure of which is seasonal. During solstice, the season for the Cassini spacecraft's encounter with Saturn, attenuation has a maximum of two orders of magnitude, causing a reduction in modeled peak electron densities and total electron column contents by as much as a factor of three. Calculations are performed that explore the parameter space for charge-exchange reactions of H+ with vibrationally excited H2, and for different influxes of H2O, resulting in a maximum diurnal variation in electron density much weaker than the diurnal variations inferred from Voyager's Saturn Electrostatic Discharge (SED) measurements. Peak values of height-integrated Pedersen conductivities at high latitudes during solar maximum are modeled to be ∼42 mho in the summer hemisphere during solstice and ∼18 mho during equinox, indicating that even without ionization produced by auroral processes, magnetosphere-ionosphere coupling can be highly variable.  相似文献

The problem of the reflection of light from an optically thick, spherical atmosphere in which the scatterers are distributed exponentially with a scale height small compared to the radius of the planet is discussed. Exact formal solutions are obtained for the single scattered component. Useful approximate analytic solutions, which also include multiply scattered light, are given. The results are applied to the analysis of the Mariner 10 limb and terminator images of Venus. The altitude of the “detached” haze layer discovered by Mariner 10 is at 79–85 km, but in places the haze exists above 100 km. This layer apparently is a stable, planetwide feature which forms at the top of the Pioneer Venus upper haze layer. It was similar in location, scale height, and thickness at the times of the two missions, in contrast to the lower, high-altitude haze which changed dramatically. We discuss two possibilities for the nature of the limb hazes. (1) The lower haze is probably the sulfuric acid cloud and the “detached” layer may be a separate water-ice haze. (2)The “detached” haze layer may not be separate at all, but part of the sulfuric acid haze, and the apparent “gap” at 75–80 km may be the source region of a broadband absorber. The spatial distribution of the strong near-UV absorber, which may be elemental sulfur as first suggested by B. Hapke and R. Nelson (1975, J. Atmos. Sci.32, 1212–1218), is examined in light of our results. Several arguments indicate that there is no nonabsorbing, overlying haze and that the UV absorber extends to the top of the haze 8layer.  相似文献

PROGNOZ-7 observations of intense “magnetosheath-like” plasma deep inside the high latitude boundary layer, the plasma mantle, indicates that solar wind plasma elements may occasionally penetrate the magnetopause and form high density regions in the plasma mantle. These “magnetosheath-like” regions are usually associated with strong flow of solar wind ions (e.g. H+ and He2+) and the presence of terrestrial ions (e.g. O+). The magnetosheath-like structures may roughly be classified as “newly injected” or “stagnant”. The newly injected structures have characteristics very similar to those found in the magnetosheath, i.e. strong antisunward flow and magnetosheath ion composition and density. The magnetic field characteristics may, however, differ considerably from those found further out in the magnetosheath. The “stagnant” structures are characterized by a reduced plasma flow, a lower density and a different ion composition as compared to that in the magnetosheath. In a few cases newly injected structures were even found in the innermost part of the mantle (i.e. forming a “boundary region” adjacent to the lobe). These cases were also associated with fairly strong fluxes of O+ ions in the outer mantle. Whilst the newly injected type of magnetosheath-like structure contained almost no O+ ions, the stagnant regions were intermixed by an appreciable amount of ionospheric ions. The newly injected and stagnant penetration regions had both in common a diamagnetic decrease of the ambient magnetic field. The newly injected structures, however, were also associated with a considerable reorientation of the magnetic field vector. A common feature for penetration regions well separated from the magnetopause is that they are mainly observed for a southward IMF. A third category of plasma mantle penetrated events, denoted “open magnetopause” events, usually occurred when the IMF was away and northward. Characteristics for these events were a smooth transition/rotation of the magnetic field vector near the magnetopause, and fairly high ion densities in the mantle and the transition region.  相似文献

Theoretical results on the daily variation of O+ and H+ field-aligned velocities in the topside ionosphere are presented. The results are for an L = 3 magnetic field tube under sunspot minimum conditions at equinox. They come from calculations of time-dependent O+ and H+ continuity and momentum balance in a magnetic field tube which extends from the lower F2 region to the equatorial plane (Murphy et al., 1976).There are occasions when ion counterstreaming occurs, with the O+ velocity upward and H+ velocity downward. The conditions causing this counterstreaming are described: the H+ layer is descending whilst O+ is supplied from below either to increase the O+ concentration at fixed heights or to replace O+ ions lost by charge exchange with neutral H. It is suggested that the results of observations at Arecibo by Vickrey et al. (1976) of O+ and H+ concentrations and counterstreaming velocities are significantly affected by E×B drift.  相似文献

The coupled time-dependent O+ and H+ continuity and momentum equations and O+, H+ and electron heat balance equations are solved simultaneously within the L = 1.4 (Arecibo) magnetic flux tube between an altitude of 120 km and the equatorial plane. The results of the calculations are used in a study of the topside ionosphere above Arecibo at equinox during sunspot maximum. Magnetically quiet conditions are assumed. The results of the calculations show that the L = 1.4 magnetic flux tube becomes saturated from an arbitrary state within 2–3 days. During the day the ion content of the magnetic flux tube consists mainly of O+ whereas O+ and H+ are both important during the night. There is an altitude region in the topside ionosphere during the day where ion-counterstreaming occurs with H+ flowing downward and O+ flowing upward. The conditions causing this ion-counterstreaming are discussed. There is a net chemical gain of H+ at the higher altitudes. This H+ diffuses both upwards and downwards whilst O+ diffuses upwards from its solar e.u.v. production source which is most important at the lower altitudes. During the night the calculated O+ and H+ temperatures are very nearly equal whereas during the day there are occasions when the H+ temperature exceeds the O+ temperature by about 300 K.  相似文献

Band models for CO2 and H2O absorption are described, and used to model the Venera 11 spectra near 1 μm. An effective-path approximation is used to allow for scattering in the clouds. The model has 10 layers and uses 211 CO2 and 15 H2O vibrational transitions, at 5 cm? resolution. Within a factor of 2, a maximum absorption in the 0.94-μm H2O band just below the clouds, corresponding to 200 ppm by volume, in agreement with V. I. Moroz, N. A. Parfen'ev, and N. F. San'ko (1979, Cosmic Res. 17, 601–614) is found. More accurate band strenghts are needed to model the bottom scale height accurately. The possibility that the 0.94-μm feature is blended with a band of some other molecule has been examined. Ten possible chemical species were examined, with negative results.  相似文献

Plasma and magnetic field data from PROGNOZ-7 have revealed that solar wind (magnetosheath) plasma elements may penetrate the dayside magnetopause surface and form high density regions with enhanced cross-field flow in the boundary layer. The injected magnetosheath plasma is observed to have an excess drift velocity as compared to the local boundary layer plasma, comprising both “cold” plasma of terrestrial origin and a hot ring current component. A differential drift between two plasma components can be understood in terms of a momentum transfer process driven by an injected magnetosheath plasma population. The braking action of the injected plasma may be described as a dynamo process where particle kinetic energy is transferred into electromagnetic energy (electric field). The generated electric field will force the local plasma to ε×B-drift, and the dynamo region therefore also constitutes an accelerator region for the local plasma. Whenever energy is dissipated from the energy transfer process (a net current is flowing through a load), there will also be a difference between the induced electric field and the v×B term of the generator plasma. Thus, the local plasma will drift more slowly than the injected generator plasma. We will present observations showing that a relation between the momentum transferred, the injected plasma and the momentum taken up by the local plasma exists. For instance, if the local plasma density is sufficiently high, the differential drift velocity of the injected and local plasma will be small. A large fraction of the excess momentum is then transferred to the local plasma. Conversely, a low local plasma density results in a high velocity difference and a low fraction of local momentum transfer. In our study cases the “cold” plasma component was frequently found to dominate the local magnetospheric plasma density in the boundary layer. Accordingly, this component may have the largest influence on the local momentum transfer process. We will demonstrate that this also seems to be the case. Moreover we show that the accelerated “cold” plasma component may be used as a tracer element reflecting both the momentum and energy transfer and the penetration process in the dayside boundary layer. The high He+ percentage of the accelerated “cold” plasma indicates a plasmaspheric origin. Considering the quite high densities of energetic He+ found in the boundary layer, the overall low abundance of He+ (as compared to e.g. O+) found in the plasma sheet and outer ring current evidently reduces the importance of the dayside boundary layer as a plasma source in the large scale magnetospheric circulation system.  相似文献
