Very often, inexact, uncertain, or vague hydrological data are encountered in water researches. Statistical and fuzzy set theories are applied to deal with hydrological uncertainty problems. In this paper, the basic concept of the rough set theory is introduced and its application to hydrological data is illustrated. The proposed method is applied to water environment and environment quality evaluation of the Hang Jiang River, a major branch of the Yangtze River, in China. Our numerical applications suggest that the rough set theory is a useful tool for analysis of inexact, uncertain, or vague hydrological data.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

The problem of estimation of suspended load carried by a river is an important topic for many water resources projects. Conventional estimation methods are based on the assumption of exact observations. In practice, however, a major source of natural uncertainty is due to imprecise measurements and/or imprecise relationships between variables. In this paper, using the Multivariate Adaptive Regression Splines (MARS) technique, a novel fuzzy regression model for imprecise response and crisp explanatory variables is presented. The investigated fuzzy regression model is applied to forecast suspended load by discharge based on two real-world datasets. The accuracy of the proposed method is compared with two well-known parametric fuzzy regression models, namely, the fuzzy least-absolutes model and the fuzzy least-squares model. The comparison results reveal that the MARS-fuzzy regression model performs better than the other models in suspended load estimation for the particular datasets. This comparison is done based on four goodness-of-fit criteria: the criterion based on similarity measure, the criterion based on absolute errors and the two objective functions of the fuzzy least-absolutes model and the fuzzy least-squares model. The proposed model is general and can be used for modelling natural phenomena whose available observations are reported as imprecise rather than crisp.

Water resources systems are associated with a variety of complexities and uncertainties due to socio-economic and hydro-environmental impacts. Such complexities and uncertainties lead to challenges in evaluating the water resources management alternatives and the associated risks. In this study, the factorial analysis and fuzzy random value-at-risk are incorporated into a two-stage stochastic programming framework, leading to a factorial-based two-stage programming with fuzzy random value-at-risk (FTSPF). The proposed FTSPF approach aims to reveal the impacts of uncertainty parameters on water resources management strategies and the corresponding risks. In detail, fuzzy random value-at-risk is to reflect the potential risk about financial cost under dual uncertainties, while a multi-level factorial design approach is used to reveal the interaction between feasibility degrees and risk levels, as well as the relationships (including curvilinear relationship) between these factors and the responses. The application of water resources system planning makes it possible to balance the satisfaction of system benefit, the risk levels of penalty and the feasibility degrees of constraints. The results indicate that decision makers would pay more attention to the tradeoffs between the system benefit and feasibility degree, and the water allocation for agricultural section contributes most to control the financial loss of water. Moreover, FTSPF can generate a higher system benefit and more alternatives under various risk levels. Therefore, FTSPF could provide more useful information for enabling water managers to identify desired policies with maximized system benefit under different system-feasibility degrees and risk levels.  相似文献

Analytic hierarchy process (AHP) is a utility theory based decision-making technique, which works on a premise that the decision-making of complex problems can be handled by structuring them into simple and comprehensible hierarchical structures. However, AHP involves human subjective evaluation, which introduces vagueness that necessitates the use of decision-making under uncertainty. The vagueness is commonly handled through fuzzy sets theory, by assigning degree of membership. But, the environmental decision-making problem becomes more involved if there is an uncertainty in assigning the membership function (or degree of belief) to fuzzy pairwise comparisons, which is referred to as ambiguity (non-specificity). In this paper, the concept of intuitionistic fuzzy set is applied to AHP, called IF-AHP to handle both vagueness and ambiguity related uncertainties in the environmental decision-making process. The proposed IF-AHP methodology is demonstrated with an illustrative example to select best drilling fluid (mud) for drilling operations under multiple environmental criteria.  相似文献

Uncertainty Analysis for a Dynamic Phosphorus Model with Fuzzy Parameters   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
A simplified method based on fuzzy set theory is presented to incorporate uncertainty of parameters into a dynamic total phosphorus model. Uncertainty may arise from difference between calibrated conditions and projected condition as well as from inconsistency of available data in the literature. The uncertainty in parameters was represented by fuzzy numbers that can be generated through various ways such as model calibration process, soft interpretation of literature data, and subjective opinions of experts. The proposed fuzzy approach decomposed fuzzy parameters into interval numbers at different level cuts, and solved for interval solutions through very simple calculation instead of solving nonlinear programming models. The interval solutions at each level cut were could be combined to obtain fuzzy solutions. This method has been applied to the phosphorus load-response model of the Triadelphia Reservoir near the Washington, DC area. Two pollution control scenarios have been simulated with fuzzy parameters. The measures of necessity and possibility have been used to analyze the potential risk of the two scenarios. The research results indicated that uncertainty is a very important factor in water quality modeling. By incorporating uncertainty into model framework, the fuzzy model identified the highly risky scenario that was considered preferable based on solutions of the deterministic model.  相似文献

Water resources provide the foundation for human development and environmental sustainability. Water shortage occurs more or less in some regions, which usually causes sluggish economic activities, degraded ecology, and even conflicts and disputes over water use sectors. Game theory can better reflect the behaviors of involved stakeholders and has been increasingly employed in water resources management. This paper presents a framework for the allocation of river basin water in a cooperative way. The proposed framework applies the TOPSIS model combined with the entropy weight to determine stakeholders’ initial water share, reallocating water and net benefit by using four solution concepts for crisp and fuzzy games. Finally, the Fallback bargaining model was employed to achieve unanimous agreement over the four solution concepts. The framework was demonstrated with an application to the Dongjiang River Basin, South China. The results showed that, overall, the whole basin gained more total benefits when the players participated in fuzzy coalitions rather than in crisp coalitions, and \(\left\{ {NHS_{Fuzzy} \,and\, SV_{Crisp} } \right\}\) could better distribute the total benefit of the whole basin to each player. This study tested the effectiveness of this framework for the water allocation decision-making in the context of water management in river basins. The results provide technical support for water right trade among the stakeholders at basin scale and have the potential to relieve water use conflicts of the entire basin.  相似文献

The physically based distributed hydrological models are ideal for hydrological simulations; however most of such models do not use the basic equations pertaining to mass, energy and momentum conservation, to represent the physics of the process. This is plausibly due to the lack of complete understanding of the hydrological process. The soil and water assessment tool (SWAT) is one such widely accepted semi-distributed, conceptual hydrological model used for water resources planning. However, the over-parameterization, difficulty in its calibration process and the uncertainty associated with predictions make its applications skeptical. This study considers assessing the predictive uncertainty associated with distributed hydrological models. The existing methods for uncertainty estimation demand high computational time and therefore make them challenging to apply on complex hydrological models. The proposed approach employs the concepts of generalized likelihood uncertainty estimation (GLUE) in an iterative procedure by starting with an assumed prior probability distribution of parameters, and by using mutual information (MI) index for sampling the behavioral parameter set. The distributions are conditioned on the observed information through successive cycles of simulations. During each cycle of simulation, MI is used in conjunction with Markov Chain Monte Carlo procedure to sample the parameter sets so as to increase the number of behavioral sets, which in turn helps reduce the number of cycles/simulations for the analysis. The method is demonstrated through a case study of SWAT model in Illinois River basin in the USA. A comparison of the proposed method with GLUE indicates that the computational requirement of uncertainty analysis is considerably reduced in the proposed approach. It is also noted that the model prediction band, derived using the proposed method, is more effective compared to that derived using the other methods considered in this study.  相似文献

The quantification of uncertainty in the simulations from complex physically based distributed hydrologic models is important for developing reliable applications. The generalized likelihood uncertainty estimation method (GLUE) is one of the most commonly used methods in the field of hydrology. The GLUE helps reduce the parametric uncertainty by deriving the probability distribution function of parameters, and help analyze the uncertainty in model output. In the GLUE, the uncertainty of model output is analyzed through Monte Carlo simulations, which require large number of model runs. This induces high computational demand for the GLUE to characterize multi-dimensional parameter space, especially in the case of complex hydrologic models with large number of parameters. While there are a lot of variants of GLUE that derive the probability distribution of parameters, none of them have addressed the computational requirement in the analysis. A method to reduce such computational requirement for GLUE is proposed in this study. It is envisaged that conditional sampling, while generating ensembles for the GLUE, can help reduce the number of model simulations. The mutual relationship between the parameters was used for conditional sampling in this study. The method is illustrated using a case study of Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT) model on a watershed in the USA. The number of simulations required for the uncertainty analysis was reduced by 90 % in the proposed method compared to existing methods. The proposed method also resulted in an uncertainty reduction in terms of reduced average band width and high containing ratio.

In this study we propose a factorial fuzzy two-stage stochastic programming (FFTSP) approach to support water resources management under dual uncertainties. The dual uncertainties in terms of fuzziness in modeling parameters and variability of α-cut levels are taken into account. As different α-cut levels are assigned to each fuzzy parameter (instead of an identical α-cut level), the effects of α-cut levels on fuzzy parameters can be considered. Factorial analysis method is integrated with fuzzy vertex method to tackle the interactive effects of fuzzy parameters within a two-stage stochastic programming framework. The effects of the interactions among fuzzy parameters under various α-cut level combinations can be examined. The FFTSP approach is applied to a water resources management case to demonstrate its applicability. The results show that this approach can not only give various optimized solutions according to decision makers’ confidence levels but also provide in-depth analyses for the effects of fuzzy parameters and their interactions on the solutions. In addition, the results show that the effects of diverse α-cut combinations should not be disregarded because the results may differ under some specific α-cut combinations. The dual sequential factorial analyses embedded in the FFTSP approach guarantee most variations in a system can be analyzed. Therefore water managers are able to gain sufficient knowledge to make robust decisions under uncertainty.  相似文献

Assimilation of fuzzy data by the BME method   总被引:1,自引:1,他引:0
Modern spatiotemporal geostatistics provides a powerful framework for generation of predictive maps over a spatiotemporal domain by accounting for general knowledge to define a space of plausible events and then restricting this space of plausible events to be consistent with available site-specific knowledge. The Bayesian maximum entropy (BME) method is one of the most widely used modern geostatistics methods. BME results from assigning probabilities of plausible events based on general knowledge through information maximization and then applying operational Bayesian conditionalization that can explicitly assimilate stochastic representations of various uncertain (soft) data bases. The paper demonstrates that fuzzy data sets can be indirectly assimilated by BME through a two-step process: (a) reinterpretation of the fuzzy data as probabilistic through a generalized defuzzification procedure, and (b) efficient assimilation of the probabilistic results of generalized defuzzification by the BME method. A numerical demonstration involves site-specific probabilistic results obtained from the generalized defuzzification of a simulated fuzzy data set and general knowledge that includes the spatial mean trend and correlation structure models. The parameters of these models can be inferred from the hard data equivalent values of the probabilistic results. Accordingly, details of inference based on probabilistic soft data are also considered.  相似文献

Radar estimates of rainfall are being increasingly applied to flood forecasting applications. Errors are inherent both in the process of estimating rainfall from radar and in the modelling of the rainfall–runoff transformation. The study aims at building a framework for the assessment of uncertainty that is consistent with the limitations of the model and data available and that allows a direct quantitative comparison between model predictions obtained by using radar and raingauge rainfall inputs. The study uses radar data from a mountainous region in northern Italy where complex topography amplifies radar errors due to radar beam occlusion and variability of precipitation with height. These errors, together with other error sources, are adjusted by applying a radar rainfall estimation algorithm. Radar rainfall estimates, adjusted and not, are used as an input to TOPMODEL for flood simulation over the Posina catchment (116 km2). Hydrological model parameter uncertainty is explicitly accounted for by use of the GLUE (Generalized Likelihood Uncertainty Estimation). Statistics are proposed to evaluate both the wideness of the uncertainty limits and the percentage of observations which fall within the uncertainty bounds. Results show the critical importance of proper adjustment of radar estimates and the use of radar estimates as close to ground as possible. Uncertainties affecting runoff predictions from adjusted radar data are close to those obtained by using a dense raingauge network, at least for the lowest radar observations available. Multi-site simulation of hydrological data are required for drought risk assessment of large multi-reservoir water supply systems. In this paper, a general Bayesian framework is presented for the calibration and evaluation of multi-site hydrological data at annual timescales. Models included within this framework are the hidden Markov model (HMM) and the widely used lag-1 autoregressive (AR(1)) model. These models are extended by the inclusion of a Box–Cox transformation and a spatial correlation function in a multi-site setting. Parameter uncertainty is evaluated using Markov chain Monte Carlo techniques. Models are evaluated by their ability to reproduce a range of important extreme statistics and compared using Bayesian model selection techniques which evaluate model probabilities. The case study, using multi-site annual rainfall data situated within catchments which contribute to Sydney’s main water supply, provided the following results: Firstly, in terms of model probabilities and diagnostics, the inclusion of the Box–Cox transformation was preferred. Secondly the AR(1) and HMM performed similarly, while some other proposed AR(1)/HMM models with regionally pooled parameters had greater posterior probability than these two models. The practical significance of parameter and model uncertainty was illustrated using a case study involving drought security analysis for urban water supply. It was shown that ignoring parameter uncertainty resulted in a significant overestimate of reservoir yield and an underestimation of system vulnerability to severe drought.  相似文献

A generalized likelihood uncertainty estimation (GLUE) method incorporating moving least squares (MLS) with entropy for stochastic sampling (denoted as GLUE‐MLS‐E) was proposed for uncertainty analysis of flood inundation modelling. The MLS with entropy (MLS‐E) was established according to the pairs of parameters/likelihoods generated from a limited number of direct model executions. It was then applied to approximate the model evaluation to facilitate the target sample acceptance of GLUE during the Monte‐Carlo‐based stochastic simulation process. The results from a case study showed that the proposed GLUE‐MLS‐E method had a comparable performance as GLUE in terms of posterior parameter estimation and predicted confidence intervals; however, it could significantly reduce the computational cost. A comparison to other surrogate models, including MLS, quadratic response surface and artificial neural networks (ANN), revealed that the MLS‐E outperformed others in light of both the predicted confidence interval and the most likely value of water depths. ANN was shown to be a viable alternative, which performed slightly poorer than MLS‐E. The proposed surrogate method in stochastic sampling is of practical significance in computationally expensive problems like flood risk analysis, real‐time forecasting, and simulation‐based engineering design, and has a general applicability in many other numerical simulation fields that requires extensive efforts in uncertainty assessment. It is well known that there is a degree of fuzzy uncertainty in land cover classification using remote sensing (RS) images. In this article, we propose a novel fuzzy uncertainty modeling algorithm for representing the features of land cover patterns, and present an adaptive interval type-2 fuzzy clustering method. The proposed fuzzy uncertainty modeling method is performed in two main phases. First, the segmentation units of the input multi-spectral RS image data are subjected to objectbased interval-valued symbolic modeling. As a result, features for each land cover type are represented in the form of an intervalvalued symbolic vector, which describes the intra-class uncertainty better than the source data and improves the separability between different classes. Second, interval type-2 fuzzy sets are generated for each cluster based on the distance metric of the interval-valued vectors. This step characterizes the inter-class high-order fuzzy uncertainty and improves the classification accuracy. To demonstrate the advantages and effectiveness of the proposed approach, extensive experiments are conducted on two multispectral RS image datasets from regions with complex land cover characteristics, and the results are compared with those given by well-known fuzzy and conventional clustering algorithms.  相似文献

Environmental and ecological issues caused by water resources crisis have brought enormous challenges to the sustainable development of water-deficient area. Water resources allocation management balancing the relationship between the social-economic development and the ecological environment has become a hot topic in recent years. In this paper, an inexact fuzzy chance-constrained programming (IFCCP) approach is proposed for regional water resource allocation optimization with the aim of promoting the harmonious development of the social economic and the ecological environment, improving water utilization efficiency, and realizing water resources consumption control under uncertainties. The method is incorporated with interval parameter programming, fuzzy programming, and chance-constrained programming, for handling system uncertainties and balancing the optimal objectives with the risk of violating system constraints. Under this framework, an IFCCP model for water resources allocation management was successfully formulated and applied to a typical water-deficit area, Tianjin, China, for obtaining a better water resources plan among multiple users under resources and environmental limitation. Different total water consumption control policies are designed for assessing regional water allocation schemes. The results indicated that the gap of supply and demand will only be solved by foreign water, the transferred water from Luan River and Changjiang River would still be the main supplier in planning horizon. Moreover, the strict total water consumption control policy would guarantee the water requirement of ecological environment, lead to changes in the structure of water supply, actively guide on water conservation, and promote the large-scale utilization of desalted water and recycle water.  相似文献

This paper presents a new approach to improving real‐time reservoir operation. The approach combines two major procedures: the genetic algorithm (GA) and the adaptive network‐based fuzzy inference system (ANFIS). The GA is used to search the optimal reservoir operating histogram based on a given inflow series, which can be recognized as the base of input–output training patterns in the next step. The ANFIS is then built to create the fuzzy inference system, to construct the suitable structure and parameters, and to estimate the optimal water release according to the reservoir depth and inflow situation. The practicability and effectiveness of the approach proposed is tested on the operation of the Shihmen reservoir in Taiwan. The current M‐5 operating rule curves of the Shihmen reservoir are also evaluated. The simulation results demonstrate that this new approach, in comparison with the M‐5 rule curves, has superior performance with regard to the prediction of total water deficit and generalized shortage index (GSI). In this study, a two-stage fuzzy chance-constrained programming (TFCCP) approach is developed for water resources management under dual uncertainties. The concept of distribution with fuzzy probability (DFP) is presented as an extended form for expressing uncertainties. It is expressed as dual uncertainties with both stochastic and fuzzy characteristics. As an improvement upon the conventional inexact linear programming for handling uncertainties in the objective function and constraints, TFCCP has advantages in uncertainty reflection and policy analysis, especially when the input parameters are provided as fuzzy sets, probability distributions and DFPs. TFCCP integrates the two-stage stochastic programming (TSP) and fuzzy chance-constrained programming within a general optimization framework. TFCCP incorporates the pre-regulated water resources management policies directly into its optimization process to analyze various policy scenarios; each scenario has different economic penalty when the promised amounts are not delivered. TFCCP is applied to a water resources management system with three users. Solutions from TFCCP provide desired water allocation patterns, which maximize both the system’s benefits and feasibility. The results indicate that reasonable solutions were generated for objective function values and decision variables, thus a number of decision alternatives can be generated under different levels of stream flows, α-cut levels and fuzzy dominance indices.  相似文献
