The Galilean satellite eclipse technique for measuring the aerosol distribution in the upper Jovian atmosphere is described and applied using 30 color observations of the 13 May 1972 eclipse of Ganymede obtained with the 5-m Hale telescope. This event probes the South Temperate Zone. The observed aerosol lies above the visible cloud tops, is very tenuous and varies with altitude, increasing rapidly with downward passage through the tropopause. The aerosol extinction coefficient, κa (λ1.05 μm), is ~1.1 × 10?9 cm?1 in the lower stratosphere and ~1.1 × 10?8 cm?1 at the tropopause. The 1σ uncertainty in these values does not exceed 50% The observations require some aerosol above the tropopause but do not clearly determine its structure. The present analysis emphasizes an extended haze distribution, but the alternate possibility is not excluded that the stratospheric aerosol resides in a thin layer. The aerosol extinction increases with decreasing wavelength and indicates the particle radius to be ?0.2 μm. Larger radii are impossible. These overall results confirm Axel's (1972) suggestion of a small quantity of dust above the Jovian cloud tops and the optical depths are consistent with those required to explain the low uv albedo.  相似文献

Spatially resolved measurements of Saturn's reflectivity in the 6190-, 7250-, and 8996-Å methane bands are analyzed to determine cloud vertical structures in the Equatorial Zone, South Equatorial Belt, and North and South Temperate Regions near latitudes ±30°. Radiative transfer models are computed for a simple two-parameter structure. The parameters are A0, the methane column abundance in an aerosol-free layer at the top of the atmosphere, and A1, the specific abundance of methane in a semi-infinite homogeneous gas and cloud mixture deep in the atmosphere. For the Equatorial Zone, a model with A0 = 37 ± 3 m-am and A1 = 26 ± 2 m-am fits all three bands. For the North Temperate Region, a model with A0 = 39 m-am and A1 = 47 m-am comes close to fitting all three bands. For the South Equatorial Belt and South Temperate Region, a single A0 and A1 do not fit all three bands. The structure for the South Equatorial Belt resembles that for the North Temperate Region. The level where unit cloud optical depth occurs in the South Temperate Region is deeper than the corresponding level at other latitudes. Some suggestions are proposed to explain differences between model parameters derived using different absorption bands.  相似文献

An eclipse of Titan by Saturn was observed on December 20, 1979, to measure the aerosol content in the atmosphere of Saturn. The measurements were made with the 74-in. telescope of the Helwan Observatory, Egypt, in the bandpass 6300–7300 Å and extend to ~5 magnitudes of eclipse darkening. The faint portion of the lightcurve unambiguously requires the presence of aerosol in the lower stratosphere of Saturn. The aerosol extends to at least 20 km above the tropopause and has a one-way stratospheric vertical optical depth of 0.4?0.02+0.04 at 6700 Å. The results apply to the sunset terminator at a cronographic latitude of 23°S.  相似文献

We present cloud structure models for Jupiter's Great Red Spot, Equatorial Zone, North Tropical Zone, North and South Temperate Zones, North and South Polar Regions, and North and South Polar Hoods. The models are based on images of Jupiter in three methane bands (between 6190 and 8900 Å) and nearby continuum. Radiative transfer calculations include multiple scattering and absorption from three aerosol layers, the topmost of which is a high thin haze and the lower two are called clouds. All models are computed relative to a similar model for the South Tropical Zone which fits methane absorption data and Pioneer photometry data well. Outstanding features suggested by the model results are the transition in the upper-cloud altitude to about 3 km lower altitude from the tropical zones to temperate zones and polar regions, a N/S asymmetry in cloud thickness in the tropical and temperate zones, the presence of aerosols up to about 0.3 bar in the Great Red Spot and Equatorial Zone, the need for a significant (τ ~ 0.75 to 1.0) aerosol content in this region in the Equatorial Zone, and perhaps an even higher and thicker cloud in the South Polar Hood. The haze layer above both polar hoods may exhibit different scattering properties than the haze which covers lower latitudes. In comparing the present results with models derived from polarization and infrared observations we conclude that polarization data are sensitive to aerosols in and above the upper cloud layer but insensitive to deeper cloud structure, and the converse is true for infrared data.  相似文献

Results of the scattered solar radiation spectrum measurements made deep in the Venus atmosphere by the Venera 11 and 12 descent probes are presented. The instrument had two channels: spectrometric (to measure downward radiation in the range 0.45 < γ < 1.17 μm) and photometric (four filters and circular angle scanning in an almost vertical plane). Spectra and angular scans were made in the height range from 63 km above the planet surface. The integral flux of solar radiation is 90 ± 12 W m?2 measured on the surface at the subsolar point. The mean value of surface absorbed radiation flux per planetary unit area is 17.5 ± 2.3 W m?2. For Venera 11 and 12 landing sites the atmospheric absorbed radiation flux is ~15 W m?2 for H >; 43 km and ~45 W m?2 for H < 48 km in the range 0.45 to 1.55 μm. At the landing sites of the two probes the investigated portion of the cloud layer has almost the same structure: it consists of three parts with boundaries between them at about 51 and 57 km. The base of clouds is near 48 km above the surface. The optical depth of the cloud layer (below 63 km) in the range 0.5 to 1 μm does not depend on the wavelength and is ~29 and ~38 for the Venera 11 and 12 landing sites, respectively. The single-scattering albedo, ω0, in the clouds is very close to 1 outside the absorption bands. Below 58 km the parameter (1 ? ω0) is <10?3 for 0.49 and 0.7 μm. The parameter (1 ? ω0) obviously increases above 60 km. Below 48 km some aerosol is present. The optical depth here is a strong function of wavelength. It varies from 1.5 to 3 at λ = 0.49 μm and from 0.13 to 0.4 at 1.0 μm. The mean size of particles below the cloud deck is about 0.1 μm. Below 35 km true absorption was found at λ < 0.55 μm with the (1 ? ω0) maximum at H ≈ 15 km. The wavelength and height dependence of the absorption coefficient are compatible with the assumption that sulfur with a mixing ratio ~2 × 10?8 normalized to S2 molecules is the absorber. The upper limits of the mixing ratio for Cl2, Br2, and NO2 are 4 × 10?8, 2 × 10?11, and 4 × 10?10, respectively. The CO2 and H2O bands are confidently identified in the observed spectra. The mean value of the H2O mixing ratio is 3 × 10?5 < FH2O < 10?4 in the undercloud atmosphere. The H2O mixing ratio evidently varies with height. The most probable profile is characterized by a gradual increase from FH2O = 2 × 10?5 near the surface to a 10 to 20 times higher value in the clouds.  相似文献

Titan was observed in four broad passbands between 35 and 150 μm. The brightness temperature in this interval is roughly constant at 76 ± 3°K. Integrating Titan's spectrum from 5 to 150 μm yields an effective temperature of 86 ± 3°K. Both the bright and dark hemispheres of Iapetus were observed in one broadband filter with λe ~ 66 μm. The brightness temperatures for these two sides of Iapetus are 96 ± 9°K and 114 ± 10°K, respectively. The bright-side Bond albedo is calculated to be 0.61?0.22+0.16.  相似文献

Observational determinations of the absolute spectral reflectivities of visually distinct regions of Jupiter are presented. The observations cover the 3390–8400 Å region at 10 Å resolution, and they are compared with observations using 150–200 Å filters in the 3400–6400 Å range. The effective reflectivities for several regions (on the meridian) in the 3400–8400 Å range are: South Tropical Zone, 0.76±0.05; North Tropical Zone, 0.68±0.08; South Equatorial Belt, 0.63±0.08; North Equatorial Belt, 0.62±0.04; and the Great Red Spot, 0.64±0.09. Reflectivities near the limb are also observed. The appropriate blue and red reflectivities are tabulated in support of the Pioneer 10 and 11 imaging photopolarimeter experiments. For the regions listed above, equivalent widths of molecular bands vary as: CH4 (6190 Å), 14–16 Å; CH4 (7250 Å), 77–86 Å; and NH3 (7900 Å), 87–95 Å. Significant differences from the results of C. B. We present spatial scans at eight wavelengths between 7.8 and 24 μm along Jupiter's meridian and along the Equatorial Zone, the North Equatorial Belt, and the South Tropical Zone. Some features of these scans are differences in brightness temperatures between the Great Red Spot and the surrounding South Tropical Zone, a higher temperature at high northern latitudes than high southern latitudes, equal or possibly higher temperatures of zones than belts at 7.8 μm in contrast to higher temperatures of belts at other observed wavelengths, very strong limb darkening at 8.9 μm possibly due to a large scale height or a nonuniform distribution of solid NH3 particles, and inhomogenities within belts and zones.  相似文献

Abstract— CR chondrites contain metal lumps (>300 μm) either attached to chondrule silicates or apparently isolated in the matrix. Here, laser ablation microanalysis of six metal lumps from a polished thin section of the Acfer 097 CR2 chondrite at 15 μm spatial resolution revealed zoning profiles for the volatile elements Cu and Ga. The mutual diffusivities of Cu and Ga were used to infer T ~ 1473 ± 100 K from the correlation of Cu versus Ga. The cooling rates of the metal lumps were calculated to be 0.5–50 K h?1 for Tp ~ 1473 ± 100 K, with a maximum possible range of 0.1–400 K h?1 for Tp ~ 1200–1800 K, overlapping the range of cooling rates inferred from petrological studies of type I chondrules (10–1000 K h?1). Chondrule textures were established near the peak heating temperatures of chondrules (approximately 1900–2000 K), while the Cu and Ga diffusive profiles were established after solidification (T ~ 1500 K), consistent with nonlinear cooling. Furthermore, one chondrule (N2) has a more complex zoning profile that is modeled as a three‐stage cooling history involving initial cooling at approximately 1 K h?1, followed by mild re‐heating (T ~ 1700 K) that re‐evaporated Cu and Ga from the outer approximately 100 μm of the metal lump and then cooled again at approximately 5 K h?1. The thermal effects of parent body and other preaccretionary heating events on the Cu and Ga zoning profiles are examined. Although CR parent bodies have experienced aqueous alteration, the thermal effects of this process can neither produce nor erase the Cu and Ga diffusive profiles. Thus, metal lumps in CR chondrites record the solid‐state thermal history of chondrules as they travelled away from the chondrule‐forming region.  相似文献

Data processing and interpretation of the nephelometer measurements made in the Venus atmosphere aboard the Venera 9, 10 and 11 landers in the sunlit hemisphere near the equator are discussed. These results were used to obtain the aerosol distribution and its microphysical properties from 62 km to the surface. The main aerosol content is found in the altitude range between 62 km (where measurements began) and 48 km, the location of the cloud region. Three prominent layers labeled as I (between 62 and 57 km), II (between 57 and 51 km) and III (between 51 and 48 km), each with different particle characteristics are discovered within the clouds. The measured light-scattering patterns can be intrepreted as having been produced by particles with effective radii from 1 to 2 μm depending on height and indices of refractivity from 1.45 in layer I to 1.42 in layer III. These values do not contradict the idea that the droplets are made of sulfuric acid. In layers II and III the particle size distribution is at least bimodal rather than uni-modal. The index of refraction is found to decrease to 1.33 in the lower part of layer II, suggesting a predominant abundance of larger particles of different chemical origin, and chlorine compounds are assumed to be relevant to this effect. In the entire heightrange of the Venera 9–11 craft descents, the clouds are rather rarefied and are characterized by a mean volume scattering coefficient σ ~ 2 × 10?5 cm?1 that corresponds to the mean meteorological range of visibility of about 2 km. The average mass content of condensate is estimated to be equal to 4 × 10?9 g/cm3, and the total optical depth of clouds to τ ~ 35. Near the bottom of layer III clouds are strongly variable. In the subcloud atmosphere a haze was observed between 48 and 32 km; that haze is mainly made of submicron particles, reff ~ 0.1μm. The atmosphere below that is totally transparent but separate (sometimes possibly disappearing) layers may be present up to a height of 8 km above the surface. A model of this region with a very low particle density (N ? 2–3 cm?3) strongly refractive large particles (reff ? 2.5 μm; 1.7 < n < 2.0) provided satisfactory agreement. The optical depth of aerosol in the atmosphere below the subcloud haze does not exceed 2.5.  相似文献

We have redetermined the kinematic parameters of the Gould Belt using currently available data on the motion of nearby young (log t < 7.91) open clusters, OB associations, and moving stellar groups. Our modeling shows that the residual velocities reach their maximum values of ?4 km s?1 for rotation (in the direction of Galactic rotation) and +4 km s?1 for expansion at a distance from the kinematic center of ≈300 pc. We have taken the following parameters of the Gould Belt center: R 0 = 150 pc and l 0 = 128°. The whole structure is shown to move relative to the local standard of rest at a velocity of 10.7 ± 0.7 km s?1 in the direction l = 274° ± 4° and b = ?1° ± 3°. Using the derived rotation velocity, we have estimated the virial mass of the Gould Belt to be 1.5 × 106 M .  相似文献

Ten-micrometer spectra of the North Tropical Zone, North Equatorial Belt, and Great Red Spot at a spectral resolution of 1.1 cm?1 are compared to synthetic spectra. These ground-based spectra were obtained simultaneously with the Voyager 1 encounter with Jupiter in March, 1979. The NH3 vertical distribution is found to decrease with altitude significantly faster than the saturated vapor pressure curve and is different for the three observed regions. Spatial variability in the NH3 mixing ratio could be caused by changes in the amount of NH3 condensation or in the degree of the NH3 photolysis. The C2H6 emission at 12 μm has approximately the same strength at the North Tropical Zone and North Equatorial Belt, but it is 30% weaker at the Great Red Spot. A cooler temperature inversion or a smaller abundance of C2H6 could explain the lower C2H6 emission over the Great Red Spot.  相似文献

Using a low-resolution spectrograph and a CCD array, a spectrum of Pluto from 0.58 to 1.06 μm was obtained. The spectrum had a resolution of ~25 A? and a signal-to-noise ratio of ~300. It showed CH4 absorption bands at 6200, 7200, 7900, 8400, 8600, 8900 and 10,000 Å. The strongest of these bands was at 8900 Å with an absorption depth of 0.23. This band was heavily saturated, compared to the weaker bands, providing proof for the gaseous origin of the observed absorptions. By applying CH4 band model parameters to our data, a total CH4 abundance of 80 ± 20 m-am was derived. This translates into a one-way abundance of 27 ± 7 m-am and a CH4 surface pressure of 1.5 × 10?4 atm. An upper limit to the total pressure of ~0.05 atm could be set. First-order calculations on atmospheric escape showed that this methane atmosphere would be stable if the mass of Pluto is increased 50% over its current value and its radius is 1400 km. Alternatively a heavier gas mixed with the CH4 atmosphere would aid its stability. The relatively large amount of gaseous CH4 observed implies that the absorption bands recently reported at 1.7 and 2.3 μm are likely due to atmospheric CH4 absorptions rather than surface frost as interpreted earlier.  相似文献

Modeling of the geometric albedo of Uranus in and near prominent methane absorption bands between 0.5 and 0.9 μm indicates that the visible atmosphere probably consists of a thin aerosol haze layer (τscat ? 0.3?0.5; ωH ? 0.95) above an optically thick, semi-infinite Rayleigh scattering atmosphere. A significant depletion of methane gas above the haze layer is indicated. The mixing ratio of methane in the lower atmosphere is consistent with a value of CH4/H2 ? 3 × 10?3, comparable to those derived for Jupiter and Saturn.  相似文献

We observed Saturn at far-infrared and submillimeter wavelengths during the Earth's March 1980 passage through the plane of Saturn's rings. Comparison with earlier spectroscopic observations by D. B. Ward [Icarus32, 437–442 (1977)], obtained at a time when the tilt angle of the rings was 21.8°, permits separation of the disk and ring contributions to the flux observed in this wavelength range. We present two main results: (1) The observed emission of the disk between 60 and 180 μm corresponds to a brightness temperature of 104 ± 2°K; (2) the brightness temperature of the rings drops approximately 20°K between 60 and 80 μm. Our data, in conjunction with the data obtained by other observers between 1 μm and 1 mm, permit us to derive an improved estimate for the total Saturnian surface brightness of (4.84 ± 0.32) × 10?4W cm?2 corresponding to an effective temperature of 96.1 ± 1.6°K. The ratio of radiated to incident power, PR/PI, is (1.46 ± 0.08)/(1 - A), where A is the Bond albedo. For A = 0.337 ± 0.029, PR/PI = 2.20 ± 0.15 and Saturn's intrinsic luminosity is LS = (2.9 ± 0.5) × 10?10L.  相似文献

By observing the transit of various cloud features across the Jovian disk, Terrile and Westphal (1977) have constructed limb-darkening curves for three regions in the 4.6 to 5.1 μm band. Several models currently employed in describing the radiative or dynamical properties of planetary atmospheres are here examined to understand their implications for limb-darkening. The statistical problem of fitting these models to the observed data is reviewed and methods for applying multiple regression analysis are discussed. Analysis of variance techniques are introduced to test the viability of a given physical process as a cause of the observed limb-darkening. The intermediate flux region of the North Equatorial Belt appears to be in only modest departure from radiative equilibrium. The limb-darkening curve for the South Temperate Belt is rich in structure and cannot be satisfactorily ascribed to any single physical mechanism; a combination of several, as yet unidentified, processes is likely involved. The hottest areas of the North and South Equatorial Belts exhibit limb-darkening curves that are typical of atmospheres in convective equilibrium. In this case, we derive a measure of the departure of the lapse rate from the dry adiabatic value (η?1.68), which furnishes strong evidence for a phase transition at unit optical depth in the NEB and SEB. Although the system NH3H2S cannot be entirely ruled out, the freezing of an aqueous ammonia solution is shown to be consistent with the parameter fit and solar abundance data, while being in close agreement with Lewis' (1969a) cloud models.  相似文献

The methane abundance in the lower Jovian stratosphere is measured using Galilean satellite eclipse light curves. Spectrally selective observations in and between absorption bands are compared. An average mixing ratio at the locations measured is [CH4]/[H2] ~ 1.3 × 10?3, larger than the value 0.9 × 10?3 expected for a solar abundance of carbon. Some zenographic variation of the mixing ratio may occur. Observationally compatible values are 1.3–2.0 × 10?3 in the STZ, 1.3– 2.6 × 10?3 on the GRS/STrZ edge, and 0.7–1.3 × 10?3 in the GRS.  相似文献

Infrared observations of the Io eclipse of 12 April 1980 in five broad bands from 3 to 30 μm define the thermal emission spectrum both during and after eclipse. A substantial fraction of the emitted radiation during eclipse arises from hot spots; the equivalent global average heat flow is 1.5 ± 0.3 W m?2, corresponding to an internal source of (6 ± 1) × 1013 W. The hot spot spectra can be matched by components with color temperatures of 200–600°K covering 1–2% of the surface. Comparison with observations over the past 8 years suggests that, while the flux at the hottest temperatures may be highly variable, there is no evidence for major changes in the total heat flow, which is emitted primarily in the spectral region 10–20 μm. The heating curves of the surface were observed at 10 and 20 μm; when corrected for the hot spot contribution they indicate a typical global thermal inertia for Io of (0.2 ± 0.1) × 10?3cal cm?2sec?12K?1, similar to that of the other Galilean satellites.  相似文献

It is shown that Titan's surface and plausible atmospheric thermal opacity sources—gaseous N2, CH4, and H2, CH4 cloud, and organic haze—are sufficient to match available Earth-based and Voyager observations of Titan's thermal emission spectrum. Dominant sources of thermal emission are the surface for wavelenghts λ ? 1 cm, atmospheric N2 for 1 cm ? λ ? 200 μm,, condensed and gaseous CH4 for 200 μm ? λ ? 20 μm, and molecular bands and organic haze for λ ? 20 μm. Matching computed spectra to the observed Voyager IRIS spectra at 7.3 and 52.7° emission angles yields the following abundances and locations of opacity sources: CH4 clouds: 0.1 g cm? at a planetocentric radius of 2610–2625 km, 0.3 g cm?2 at 2590–2610 km, total 0.4 ± 0.1 g cm–2 above 2590 km; organic haze: 4 ± 2 × 10?6, g cm, ?2 above 2750 km; tropospheric H2: 0.3 ± 0.1 mol%. This is the first quantitative estimate of the column density of condensed methane (or CH4/C2H6) on Titan. Maximum transparency in the middle to far IR occurs at 19 μm where the atmospheric vertical absorption optical depth is ?0.6 A particle radius r ? 2 μm in the upper portion of the CH4 cloud is indicated by the apparent absence of scattering effects.  相似文献

Fossil track analyses of a ~ 3 cm section of boulder fragment 72255, collected at the base of the South Massif, yield a surface exposure age for this boulder in its present location of ~ 40 m.y. This age is in good agreement with the81Kr-Kr exposure age (Leichet al., 1975), suggesting that the boulder was either never exposed to cosmic radiation prior to its emplacement at the foot of the South Massif or that it was heavily shielded during any previous irradiation. High-voltage electron microscope observations reveal no evidence of solar flare irradiation prior to breccia compaction, indicating that the breccia components were never part of a pre-Serenitatis near-surface regolith. The fission track record of a whitlockite crystal from 72255 yields a fission track age of 3.96 ?0.07 +0.04 g.y. Comparison with the40Ar-39 Ar age of 4.00±0.03 g.y. suggests that this age represents the compaction age of the parent boulder.  相似文献
