We have obtained near diffraction-limited images of three bipolar PPN at UKIRT in October, 1993: AFGL 915 (the Red Rectangle), AFGL 618, and AFGL 2688 (the Egg Nebula). Images were taken at unidentified infrared (UIR) emission feature wavelengths and at several continuum wavelengths in the 10 and 20µm atmospheric windows. In all three PPN the emission is dominated by a central point source with fainter emission extending for several arcsec. In AFGL 2688, the mid-IR emission is extended in the same direction as the main optical lobes. In AFGL 915, the UIR feature emission is spatially separated from the central source. The spikes that have been observed at 2µm and give the nebula its rectangular appearance are also visible at 10µm.  相似文献

Mid-infrared imaging photometry of the Orion BN/KL infrared cluster at eight wavelengths between 5 and 20µm using a 58 × 62 pixel imaging array camera has revealed new compact sources and the large-scale structure of the region in diffraction-limited (1 arcsec) detail. Several new objects have been detected within a few arcsec of IRc2, widely thought to be the principal luminosity source for the entire BN/KL complex. Detailed color temperature and emission opacity images are derived from the 7.8, 12.4 and 20.0µm observations, and the 9.8µm image is used to derive an image of silicate dust extinction for the region. The color temperature, opacity, and extinction images show that IRc2 may not be the single dominant luminosity source for the BN/KL region; substantial contributions to the luminosity could be made by IRc7, BN, KL, and five new compact 10µm sources detected within a few arcseconds of IRc2. We suggest that a luminous, early-type star near IRc2, which is associated with the compact radio source I and the Orion SiO maser, is the dominant luminosity source in the BN/KL region, hidden from view by cool dust material with at least Av 60 mag of visible extinction.  相似文献

This paper presents a semi-empirical model for variations of interstellar polarization curves based upon the Serkowski-Wilking law for optical and near-infrared wavebands. The model assumes that nonspherical dust grains producing interstellar polarization are core-mantle particles shaped like oblate spheroids. The physical picture is one in which large (a 0 0.1µm) particles in the dense cloud phase are deposited into the diffuse cloud medium and thereafter undergo mantle processing by galactic shocks and UV starlight. It is shown that polarization curves vary their widths mainly as a consequence of the nonthermal sputtering of mantles by low-velocity shocks. Mantle sputtering by shocks in low density clouds tends to broaden the curves, whereas mantle sputtering by shocks in denser clouds produce narrow curves. Hence, shock processing of grain mantles can explain the observed correlation between the width of polarization curves and the dust grain environment.  相似文献

On the basis of the Mie theory, the differential cross-section for polarization and the polarization efficiency are calculated for some spherical interstellar grains consisting of ice, silicate, or graphite in the ultraviolet, optical, and near infrared wavelengths. As far as the polarization due to scattering is concerned, these particles scatter light as Rayleigh scattering for 0<x1, wherex is the dimensionless size parameter. The polarization efficienties depend strongly on the value of the imaginary part (m) of the refractive index of grain material whenx1: the efficiency takes a maximum value atx1 and decreases to zero asx approaches zero for the absorbing sphere such as the dielectric particle withm0.1 or the graphite grain in the infrared wavelengths.  相似文献

Interstellar polarization from aligned dust grains can be measured both in transmission at visible and near-infrared wavelengths and in emission at far-infrared and sub-mm wavelengths. These observations can help predict the behavior of foreground contamination of CMB polarimetry by dust in the Milky Way. Fractional polarization in emission from aligned dust grains will be at the higher range of currently observed values of 4–10%. Away from the galactic plane, fluctuations in Q and U will be dominated by fluctuations in intensity, and less influenced by fluctuations in fractional polarization and position angle.  相似文献

The dependence of the wavelength of peak absorption of dust grains on the grain size is investigated analytically by using an oscillator model for the absorption band. The peak wavelength of a weak absorption band is much less sensitive to the grain size than that of a strong band. This is explained by the fact that the surface mode, which is excited in the strong absorption band, is not raised in the weak absorption band. A quenched carbonaceous composite (QCC) synthesized from hydrocarbon plasma is found to have a weak absorption band at 220 nm. The absorption peak wavelength of the QCC grains falls well in the range of 217±7 nm even if the grain size runs from 5 to 100 nm. This is compatible with the observed constancy of the 220 nm hump (217±5 nm). By contrast, the absorption peak of graphite grains, which have a strong band around 280 nm and have been investigated as candidates for the hump, is very sensitive to the grain size. A quite narrow range of the grain size is required to account for the observed 220 nm feature. A weak absorption model, such as the QCC grains, is suggested to be a more likely candidate for the 220 nm extinction hump than a strong absorption model, such as graphite grains.Paper presented at the IAU Third Asian-Pacific Regional Meeting, held in Kyoto, Japan, between 30 September–6 October, 1984.  相似文献

Interstellar extinction curves obtained from the ‘extinction without standard’ method were used to constrain the dust characteristics in the mean ISM (R V = 3.1), along the lines of sight through a high latitude diffuse molecular cloud towards HD 210121 (R V = 2.1) and in a dense interstellar environment towards the cluster NGC 1977 (R V = 6.42). We have used three-component dust models comprising silicate, graphite and very small carbonaceous grains (polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons) following the grain size distributions introduced by Li & Draine in 2001. It is shown that oxygen, carbon and silicon abundances derived from our models are closer with the available elemental abundances for the dust grains in the ISM if F & G type stars atmospheric abundances are taken for the ISM than the solar. The importance of very small grains in modelling the variation of interstellar extinction curves has been investigated. Grain size distributions and elemental abundances locked up in dust are studied and compared at different interstellar environments using these three extinction curves. We present the albedo and the scattering asymmetry parameter evaluated from optical to extreme-UV wavelengths for the proposed dust models.  相似文献

Abstract— The Nova 001 [= Nuevo Mercurio (b)] and Nullarbor 010 meteorites are ureilites, both of which contain euhedral graphite crystals. The bulk of the meteorites are olivine (Fo79) and pyroxenes (Wo9En73Fs18, Wo3En77Fs20), with a few percent graphite and minor amounts of troilite, Ni-Fe metal, and possibly diamond. The rims of olivine grains are reduced (to Fo91) and contain abundant blebs of Fe metal. Silicate mineral grains are equant, anhedral, up to 2 mm across, and lack obvious preferred orientations. Euhedral graphite crystals (to 1 mm x 0.3 mm) are present at silicate grain boundaries, along boundaries and protruding into the silicates, and entirely within silicate mineral grains. Graphite euhedra are also present as radiating clusters and groups of parallel plates grains embedded in olivine; no other ureilite has comparable graphite textures. Minute lumps within graphite grains are possibly diamond, inferred to be a result of shock. Other shock effects are limited to undulatory extinction and fracturing. Both ureilites have been weathered significantly. Considering their similar mineralogies, identical mineral compositions, and identical unusual textures, Nova 001 and Nullarbor 010 are probably paired. Based on olivine compositions, Nova 001 and Nullarbor 010 are in Group 1 (FeO-rich) of Berkley et al. (1980). Silicate mineral compositions are consistent with those of other known ureilites. The presence of euhedral graphite crystals within the silicate minerals is consistent with an igneous origin, and suggests that large proportions of silicate magma were present locally and crystallized in situ.  相似文献

The (J, K)=(1,1) ammonia transition emission has been observed toward six regions with signs of active star formation (AFGL 5142, HH 33/40, AFGL 5157, AFGL 6366S, HHL 73, and S140N), using the 37 m antenna of the Haystack Observatory. We detected and mapped the ammonia emission in all of these sources with the exception of HH 33/40. The (J, K)-(2,2), ammonia transition was also observed at the peak position of each source in order to obtain the rotational temperature of the ammonia clumps.Paper presented at the 11th European regional Astronomical Meetings of the IAU on New Windows to the Universe, held 3–8 July, 1989, Tenerife, Canary Islands, Spain.  相似文献

A calculation of the equilibrium charge acquired by interstellar grains is given, which takes account of polarization charges that are induced in a grain by incident ions and electrons. Both metal and dielectric grains are considered and photoionization of the latter grains by UV radiation is taken into account where necessary. It is found that the inclusion of the polarization charges in the calculation is only important in gas clouds where the mean charge on a grain is low (<1e); that is, for HI regions and dense molecular clouds. In such clouds, the effect of the polarization charges is to increase the amount of negative charge acquired by a grain. A discussion is given concerning the validity of the classical electrostatic theory employed in the paper for small grains of radius 10–6 cm, and some astrophysical consequences of the modification of the grain charge by polarization effects are considered.  相似文献

We have obtained resolved IR images, at wavelengths from 1.2µm to 12.5µm, of a small sample of protoplanetary nebulae. The results suggest that all PPNe are axially, not spherically, symmetric, that spherical symmetry ends at the tip of the AGB, and that AGB evolution terminates with a burst of remarkably rapid, equatorially concentrated mass-loss.  相似文献

We have calculated the opacity of interstellar grains in the temperature range 10–1500 K. Two composite grain models have been considered. One of them consists of silicate coated with an ice mantle and the second has a graphite core coated also with an ice mantle. These models are compared with isolated grain models. An exact analytical and computational development of Güttler's formulae for composite grain models has been used to calculate the extinction coefficient. It has been found that the thickness of the mantle affects the opacity of the interstellar grains. The opacity of composite models differs from that of the isolated models. The effect of the different species (ice, silicate, and graphite) is also clear.  相似文献

We present spectropolarimetry of the solid CO feature at 4.67 μm along the line of sight to Elias 16, a field star background to the Taurus dark cloud. A clear increase in polarization is observed across the feature with the peak of polarization shifted in wavelength relative to the peak of absorption. This shows that dust grains in dense, cold environments (temperatures ∼20 K or less) can align and produce polarization by dichroic absorption. For a grain model, consisting of a core with a single mantle, the polarization feature is best modelled by a thick CO mantle, possibly including 10 per cent water-ice, with the volume ratio of mantle to bare grain of ∼5. Radiative torques could be responsible for the grain alignment provided the grain radius is at least 0.5 μm. This would require the grain cores to have a radius of at least 0.3 μm, much larger than grain sizes in the diffuse interstellar medium. Sizes of this order seem reasonable on the basis of independent evidence for grain growth by coagulation, as well as mantle formation, inside dense clouds.  相似文献

Composition of the Comet dust obtained by the dust impact analyzer on the Halley probes indicated that the comet dust is a mixture of silicate and carbonaceous material. The collected interplanetary dust particles (IDP's) are fluffy and composite, having grains of several different types stuck together. Using discrete dipole approximation (DDA) we study the scattering properties of composite grains. In particular, we study the angular distribution of the scattered intensity and linear polarization of composite grains. We assume that the composite grains are made up of a host silicate sphere/spheroid with the inclusions of graphite. Results of our calculations on the composite grains show that the angle of maximum polarization shifts, and the degree of polarization varies with the volume fraction of the inclusions. We use these results on the composite grains to interpret the observed scattering in cometary dust.  相似文献

We discuss the composition and size distribution of the dust in the coma of Comet Hale-Bopp. We do this using a model fit for the infrared emission measured by the Infrared Space Observatory (ISO) and the measured degree of linear polarization of scattered light at various phase angles and wavelengths. The effects of particle shape on the modeled optical properties of the dust grains are taken into account. Both the short wavelength (7-44 μm) and the long wavelength (44-120 μm) infrared spectrum are fitted using the same dust parameters, as well as the degree of linear polarization at twelve different wavelengths in the optical to near-infrared domains. We constrain our fit by forcing the abundances of the major rock forming chemical elements to be equal to those observed in meteorites. The infrared spectrum at long wavelengths reveals that large grains are needed in order to fit the spectral slope. The size and shape distribution we employ allows us to estimate the sizes of the crystalline silicates. The ratios of the strength of various forsterite features show that the crystalline silicate grains in Hale-Bopp must be submicrometer-sized. On the basis of our analysis the presence of large crystalline silicate grains in the coma can be excluded. Because of this lack of large crystalline grains combined with the fact that we do need large amorphous grains to fit the emission spectrum at long wavelengths, we need only approximately 4% of crystalline silicates by mass (forsterite and enstatite) to reproduce the observed spectral features. After correcting for possible hidden crystalline material included in large amorphous grains, our best estimate of the total mass fraction of crystalline material is ∼7.5%, which is significantly lower than deduced in previous studies in which the typical derived crystallinity is ∼20-30%. The implications of this low abundance of crystalline material on the possible origin and evolution of the comet are discussed. We conclude that the crystallinity we observe in Hale-Bopp is consistent with the production of crystalline silicates in the inner Solar System by thermal annealing and subsequent radial mixing to the comet forming region (∼30 AU).  相似文献

We present high signal-to-noise spectropolarimetry of the WC7+OB star WR 137 (HD 192641) covering the spectral range from 3600Å to 1.1µm. The polarization spectrum shows unambiguous evidence for an intrinsic polarization vector.  相似文献

Abstract— We investigate heterogeneous nucleation and growth of graphite on precondensed TiC grains in the gas outflows from carbon‐rich asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stars employing a newly‐derived heterogeneous nucleation rate taking into account of the chemical reactions at condensation. Competition between heterogeneous and homogeneous nucleations and growths of graphite is investigated to reveal the formation conditions of the TiC core‐graphite mantle spherules found in the Murchison meteorite. It is shown that no homogeneous graphite grain condenses whenever TiC condenses prior to graphite in the plausible ranges of the stellar parameters. Heterogeneous condensation of graphite occurs on the surfaces of growing TiC grains, and prevents the TiC cores from reaching the sizes realized if all available Ti atoms were incorporated into TiC grains. The physical conditions at the formation sites of the TiC core‐graphite mantle spherules observed in the Murchison meteorite are expressed by the relation 0.2 < n?0.1 (M5/ζ)?1/2L41/4 < 0.7, where v0.1 is the gas outflow velocity at the formation site in units of 0.1 km s?1, M5 the mass loss rate in 10?5 M⊙ year?1, L4 the stellar luminosity in 104 L⊙, and M/ζ is the effective mass loss rate taking account of non‐spherical symmetry of the gas outflows. The total gas pressures Pc at the formation sites for the effective mass loss rates M/ζ = 10?5‐10?3 M⊙ year?1 correspond to 0.01 < Pc < 0.9 dyn cm?2, implying that the observed TiC core‐graphite mantle spherules are formed not only at the superwind stage but also at the earlier stage of low mass loss rates. The constraint on the C/O abundance ratio, 1 < ? ? 1.03, is imposed to reproduce the observed sizes of the TiC cores. The derived upper limit of the C/O ratio is lower than the values estimated from the calculations without taking into account of heterogeneous condensation of graphite, and is close to the lower end of the C/O ratios inferred from the astronomical observations of carbon‐rich AGB stars. Brief discussion is given on other types of graphite spherules.  相似文献

Abstract— We have determined the recoil losses from silicon carbide (SiC) grain‐size fractions of spallation Ne produced by irradiation with 1.6 GeV protons. During the irradiation, the SiC grains were dispersed in paraffin wax in order to avoid reimplantation into neighboring grains. Analysis for spallogenic 21Ne of grain‐size separates in the size range 0.3 to 6 μm and comparison with the 22Na activity of the SiC + paraffin mixture indicates an effective recoil range of 2–3 μm with no apparent effect from acid treatments, which are routinely used in the isolation of meteoritic SiC grains. Our results indicate that the majority of presolar SiC grains in primitive meteorites, which are micrometer‐sized, will have lost essentially all spallogenic Ne produced by cosmic‐ray interaction in the interstellar medium. This argues against the validity of previously published presolar ages of Murchison SiC (~10 to ~130 Ma, increasing with grain size; Lewis et al., 1994), where recoil losses had been based on calculated recoil energies. It is argued that the observed variations in meteoritic SiC grain‐size fractions of 21Ne/22Ne ratios are more likely due to the effects of nucleosynthesis in the He‐burning shell of the parent AGB stars which imposes new boundary conditions on nuclear parameters and stellar models. It is suggested that spallation‐Xe produced on the abundant Ba and REE in presolar SiC, rather than spallogenic Ne, may be a promising approach to the presolar age problem. There is a hint in the currently available Xe data (Lewis et al., 1994) that the large (>1 μm) grains may be younger than the smaller (<1 μm) grains. The retention of spallogenic 21Ne produced by the bombardment of SiC grains of different grain sizes with 1.6 GeV protons, avoiding reimplantation into neighboring grains by dispersing the SiC grains in paraffin wax, has been derived from a comparison of mass spectrometrically determined 21Ne, retained in the grains, with the 22Na activity of the grains‐plus‐paraffin mixture. Compared to estimates of retention used in previous attempts to determine presolar ages for SiC (Tang and Anders, 1988b; Lewis et al., 1990, 1994), the results indicate significantly lower values. They do, however, agree with retention as expected from previous measurements of recoil ranges in similar systems (Nyquist et al., 1973; Steinberg and Winsberg, 1974). The prime reason for the discrepancy must lie in the energy of the recoiling nuclei entering in the calculation of retention by Tang and Anders (1988b), which is based on considerations by Ray and Völk (1983). Based on the results, it appears questionable that spallation contributes significantly to the observed variations of 21Ne/22Ne ratios among various SiC grain‐size separates (Lewis et al., 1994). We rather suggest that the variations, just as it has been observed for Kr and Ba already (Lewis et al., 1994; Prombo et al., 1993), have a nucleosynthetic origin. Confirmation needs input of improved nuclear data and stellar models into new network calculations of the nucleosynthesis in AGB stars of elements in the Ne region. Finally we argue that, to determine presolar system irradiation effects, spallation Xe is more favorable than is Ne, primarily because of smaller recoil losses for Xe. Although preliminary estimates hint at the possibility that the larger (>1 μm) grains are younger than the smaller (<1 μm) ones, the major uncertainty for a quantitative evaluation lies in the exact composition of the Xe‐N component thought to originate from the envelope of the SiC grains' parent stars.  相似文献

JCMT millimetre-wave detections have been obtained for 11 Vega-excess stars having spectral types ranging from B9 to K5. UKIRT 10-µm spectra have been obtained for two of the sources, SAO 179815 and SAO 186777. The spectrum of SAO 179815 shows an unusually broad and diffuse silicate emission feature, whilst SAO 186777 shows the unidentified infrared (UIR) features, which are usually attributed to hydrocarbon vibrational modes. The mm photometry, along with optical, IRAS and near-IR photometry (much of the latter recently obtained by the authors), have been used to define the spectral energy distributions of the objects. A number of them show a 1–5µm excess in addition to the longer wavelength excess. Values of the fractional excess luminosity,L dust /L , have been derived from the spectral energy distributions; they exhibit a substantial range, from 10–5 up to almost 0.5, the theoretical maximum for a passive optically thick flared disc. Radiative transfer models have been constructed for several sources. One needs a well defined overall energy distribution, 10- and/or 20-µm spectra, and sub-mm and mm photometry in order to significantly constrain the model free parameters (disc density distribution, grain size power-law index, minimum and maximum grain radii).Paper presented at the Conference onPlanetary Systems: Formation, Evolution, and Detection held 7–10 December, 1992 at CalTech, Pasadena, California, U.S.A.  相似文献
