Unusual activity of outflow mass motion connected with infail events was recorded for the B0.5 IVe star FY CMa in February 1987 from both archival IUE spectrograms of cixcumstellar Nv resonance hnes and optical spectra of Hα and He I λ5876A emission lines which showed inverse P Cygni-type profiles. We estimate the mass loss rate using ultraviolet SiIvresonance lines with expanding atmosphere modeling calculations, and describe how the radial pressure performs the dominant role in accelerating the stellar wind. We attempt to give a qualitative explanation for the activity observed for FY CMa in terms of circumstellar matter raining down to the star.  相似文献

We have calculated the total flux emitted in H α , P α and Br α by the circumstellar envelope of both an early Be star, γ Cas, and a late Be star, 1 Delphini, assuming the central star is the only source of energy input into the circumstellar envelope. These estimates are based on the Be-star models of Millar & Marlborough which have self-consistent temperature distributions determined by equating the local rates of energy gain and energy loss in the envelopes. We find that an additional source of ionizing photons, as argued by Apparao, is not necessary to account for the observed emission.  相似文献

Lenorzer et al. introduce ratios of hydrogen infrared recombination lines as a diagnostic tool to constrain the spatial distribution and physical condition of circumstellar material around hot massive stars. They demonstrate that the observed line flux ratios Hu14/Brα and Hu14/Pfγ from different types of objects associated with circumstellar material, such as Be stars, B[e] stars, and Luminous Blue Variable (LBV) stars are well separated in a diagnostic diagram. In this paper, we investigate this diagnostic tool using a non-LTE disc code developed by Sigut & Jones focusing on Be discs. We find good agreement between the empirical and predicted locations of Be stars in the Hu14/Brα versus Hu14/Pfγ diagram and show that indeed this diagnostic tool can be used to constrain basic properties of the discs of these stars.  相似文献

The Infrared Space Observatory (ISO) Short-Wavelength Spectrometer (SWS) spectra of 10 Be stars are presented. It can be seen that the Be stars show a diversity in their ISO SWS01 spectral classifications by Kraemer et al., from naked stars, stars associated with dust, stars with warm dust shells, stars with cool dust shells to very red sources. In addition, the Brα/HI(14-6) line flux ratio derived for the sample stars is compared with that of P Cyg, and it is found that the line ratio of Be stars which were investigated show not only lower values as suggested by Waters et al., but also larger values. Therefore, the line ratio cannot be used to judge whether a star is a Be star or not.  相似文献

New high-resolution spectroscopic and medium-resolution spectropolarimetric data of the B[e] star HD 87643 are presented, complemented with optical broad- and narrow-band imaging. The spectrum of HD 87643 exhibits the hybrid characteristics well known to be representative of the group of B[e] stars; a fast wind with an expansion velocity in excess of 1000 km s−1 is measured in the hydrogen and helium lines, while a slower component is traced by lower excitation lines and forbidden lines. Clues to the geometry of the rapidly expanding circumstellar shell are provided by the startling polarization changes across Hα. Comparison with published schematic calculations indicates that the polarizing material is located in a slowly rotating, expanding disc structure. A hydrodynamical model is then presented, the results of which are consistent with the original two-wind concept for B[e] stars, and which exhibits kinematic properties that may well explain the observed spectral features in HD 87643. The model calculations use as input a B star undergoing mass loss, surrounded by an optically thick disc. The resulting configuration consists of a fast polar wind from the star and a slowly expanding disc wind. The model also predicts that the stellar wind at intermediate latitudes is slower and denser than in the polar region.  相似文献

We present the first radio observations of a sample of 13 optically and IR-bright Southern hemisphere classical Be stars made from the Australian Telescope Compact Array at 3.5 and 6.3 cm simultaneously. One star, δ Cen, was detected at 3.5 cm, and a second, μ Cen, was also thought to have been detected; further observations of this source are required to confirm this detection. No sources were detected at 6.3 cm, although δ Cen was previously detected at this wavelength by other observers at a higher flux than our detection limit. The radio observations show that the spectral energy distribution undergoes a turnover between the far-IR and radio wavelengths, as was seen in previous studies. Likewise we find no simple correlation between far-IR and radio flux. Lower limits to the outer disc radius were found to be of the order of a few hundred solar radii i.e. of the order of those found previously by Taylor et al.  相似文献

We present spectropolarimetric observations, obtained at H α , of the Herbig Ae star AB Aurigae. Changes in linear polarization across the H α line probe structure in the immediate circumstellar environment of the central star, down to scales of the order of one to a few stellar radii. In the case of AB Aurigae the observed polarimetric signature is complex. After applying a correction for foreground continuum polarization, we find that there is a linear-polarized H α emission component intrinsic to the source. Rotation of the angle of polarization through the emission-line profile suggests scattering in a rotating circumstellar disc. The magnetic accretor model commonly applied to T Tauri stars shows promise of explaining these data.  相似文献

We present Hα spectropolarimetry observations of a sample of 23 Herbig Ae/Be stars. A change in the linear polarization across Hα is detected in a large fraction of the objects, which indicates that the regions around Herbig stars are flattened (disc-like) on small scales. A second outcome of our study is that the spectropolarimetric signatures for the Ae stars differ from those of the Herbig Be stars, with characteristics changing from depolarization across Hα in the Herbig Be stars, to line polarizations in the Ae group. The frequency of depolarizations detected in the Herbig Be stars (seven out of 12) is particularly interesting as, by analogy with classical Be stars, it may be the best evidence to date that the higher-mass Herbig stars are surrounded by flattened structures. For the Herbig Ae stars, nine out of 11 show a line polarization effect that can be understood in terms of a compact Hα emission that is itself polarized by a rotating disc-like circumstellar medium. The spectropolarimetric difference between the Herbig Be and Ae stars may be the first indication that there is a transition in the Hertzsprung–Russell diagram from magnetic accretion at spectral type A to disc accretion at spectral type B. Alternatively, the interior polarized line emission apparent in the Ae stars may be masked in the Herbig Be stars owing to their higher levels of Hα emission.  相似文献

We have constructed models of axisymmetric, circumstellar envelopes for Be star discs by successfully combining two numerical codes: a non-local thermodynamic equilibrium (non-LTE) radiative transfer code which calculates the level populations and disc temperature distribution self-consistently, and a hydrodynamical code. The output of one code is used as input to the other code, and hence evolving density and thermal structures may be examined. The temperatures, disc density and velocity distribution are used to investigate the outflowing viscous disc model for Be stars. We find that these simulations place constraints on the power-law density decrease in the disc with increasing distance from the star. We find that the power-law index for the line-forming region of the disc lies between 3 and 3.5 with a small dispersion.  相似文献

ISOPHOT has been used to perform high-resolution 60-μm scans of Vega, and these have been compared with those from γDra, to obtain a Gaussian width of 22±2 arcsec. The dust disc around Vega has been mapped, resolving it at 60 and 90 μm with ISOPHOT. At 90 μm a Gaussian width of 36±3 arsec has been derived. In addition, multi-filter photometry is presented, at 25, 60, 80, 100, 120, 150, 170 and 200 μm. The data are fitted by a modified blackbody with a temperature of 73 K [ Q (λ)∝1/λ1.1]. The dust disc has a luminosity L IR/ L *∼3×10−5. Using a distance of 7.8 pc, 22 arcsec corresponds to a distance of 86 au, and 36 arcsec to a distance of 140 au.  相似文献

Papers published in recent years have contributed to resolve the enigma of the hypothetical Be nature of the hot pulsating star β Cephei. This star shows variable emission in the Hα line, typical for Be stars, but its projected rotational velocity is very much lower than the critical limit, contrary to what is expected for a typical Be star. The emission has been attributed to the secondary component of the β Cephei spectroscopic binary system.
In this paper, using both our and archived spectra, we attempt to recover the Hα profile of the secondary component and to analyse its behaviour with time for a long period. To accomplish this task, we first derive the atmospheric parameters of the primary,   T eff= 24 000 ± 250 K  and  log  g = 3.91 ± 0.10  , and then we use these values to compute its synthetic Hα profile, and finally we reconstruct the secondary's profile disentangling the observed one.
The secondary's Hα profile shows the typical two-peak emission of a Be star with a strong variability. We also analysed the behaviour versus time of some linewidth parameters: equivalent width, ratio of blue to red peak intensities, full width at half-maximum, peak separation and radial velocity of the central depression.
The projected rotational velocity  ( v sin  i )  of the secondary and the dimension of the equatorial surrounding disc have also been estimated.  相似文献

We analyse a series of line profile observations of the He  i 6678 line in ζ Oph. A period analysis on these data using the mode and moments of the line profile confirms the two previously known periods. We describe a new method of mode identification for pulsating stars in which the calculated profiles are directly fitted to observed profiles. The method yields the full set of pulsational parameters including the spherical harmonic degree, ℓ, and azimuthal number, m . Application of the method to these data confirms the mode identifications previously suggested for the two periodicities. We find that the derived pulsational parameters are physically realistic and conclude that non-radial pulsation is the most likely explanation for the travelling subfeatures. However, a unique mode identification is still not possible – several non-sectorial modes fit the data as well as the usually adopted sectorial identifications. The predicted photometric amplitudes are in good accord with upper limits derived from photometric observations. We conclude that ζ Oph is a star in the β Cep instability strip in which two modes of high degree (probably ℓ=4 and ℓ=8) are excited. We present an interpretation of these findings in which the cause of the low-order line profile and light variations in periodic Be stars is corotating photospheric clouds, while the travelling subfeatures are incidental to the Be phenomenon and are a result of non-radial pulsation.  相似文献

One-armed oscillation modes in the circumstellar discs of Be stars may explain the cyclical variations in their emission lines. We show that a 3D effect, involving vertical motion and neglected in previous treatments, profoundly influences the dynamics. Using a secular theory of eccentric discs that reduces the problem to a second-order differential equation, we show that confined prograde modes are obtained for all reasonable disc temperatures and stellar rotation rates. We confirm these results using a numerical analysis of the full set of linearized equations for 3D isothermal discs including viscous terms that couple the horizontal motions at different altitudes. In order to make these modes grow, viscous damping must be overcome by an excitation mechanism such as viscous overstability.  相似文献

We present optical spectra of four intermediate-mass candidate young stellar objects that have often been classified as Herbig Ae/Be stars. Typical Herbig Ae/Be emission features are not present in the spectra of these stars. Three of them, HD 36917, HD 36982 and HD 37062, are members of the young Orion nebula cluster (ONC). This association constrains their ages to be ≲1 Myr. The lack of appreciable near-infrared excess in them suggests the absence of hot dust close to the central star. However, they do possess significant amounts of cold and extended dust as revealed by the large excess emission observed at far-infrared wavelengths. The fractional infrared luminosities  ( L ir/ L )  and the dust masses computed from IRAS fluxes are systematically lower than those found for Herbig Ae/Be stars but higher than those for Vega-like stars. These stars may thus represent the youngest examples of the Vega phenomenon known so far. In contrast, the other star in our sample, HD 58647, is more likely to be a classical Be star, as is evident from the low   L ir/ L   , the scarcity of circumstellar dust, the low polarization, the presence of H α emission and near-infrared excess, and the far-infrared spectral energy distribution consistent with free–free emission similar to other well-known classical Be stars.  相似文献
