In this paper we develop a new hypothesis which relates the formation of sand waves in open flow to the effect of stationary (lee) waves on flow with smooth nonhomogeneous downstream depth or behind an obstacle. The lee wave moves upstream with the phase velocity equal to the absolute value of the flow velocity, hence the wave crest does not move. Results of our experiments show that sand waves on the flow bed appear only below the lee waves and characteristics of sand waves are determined by the wave properties. We investigated the nonlinear stationary waves for subcritical and supercritical Froude numbers. These results allow us to predict sand waves characteristics for a particular flow. 相似文献

Tidal sand waves are dynamic bedforms found in coastal shelf seas. Moreover, these areas are inhabited by numerous benthic species, of which the spatial distribution is linked to the morphological structure of sand waves. In particular, the tube-building worm Lanice conchilegais of interest as this organism forms small mounds on the seabed, which provide shelter to other organisms. We investigate how the interactions between small-scale mounds (height ∼dm) and large-scale sand waves (height ∼m) shape the bed of the marine environment. To this end, we present a two-way coupled process-based model of sand waves and tube-building worm patches in Delft3D. The population density evolves according to a general law of logistic growth, with the bed shear stress controlling the carrying capacity. Worm patches are randomly seeded and the tubes are mimicked by small cylinders that influence flow and turbulence, thereby altering sediment dynamics. Model results relate the patches with the highest worm densities to the sand wave troughs, which qualitatively agrees with field observations. Furthermore, the L. conchilegatubes trigger the formation of sandy mounds on the seabed. Because of the population density distribution, the mounds in the troughs can be several centimetres higher than on the crests. Regarding sand wave morphology, the combination of patches and mounds are found to shorten the time-to-equilibrium. Also, if the initial bed comprised small sinusoidal sand waves, the equilibrium wave height decreased with a few decimetres compared to the situation without worm patches. As the timescale of mound formation (years) is shorter than that of sand wave evolution (decades), the mounds induce (and accelerate) sand wave growth on a similar spatial scale to the mounds. Initially, this leads to shorter sand waves than they would be in an abiotic environment. However, near equilibrium the wavelengths tend towards their abiotic counterparts again. © 2020 The Authors. Experiments are conducted in a laboratory flume on the propagation of a surface wave against unidirectional flow with a sediment bed. This article presents the spatial variation of bedforms induced by the wave-blocking phenomenon by a suitably tuned uniform fluid flow and a counter-propagating wave. The occurrence of wave-blocking is confirmed by finding a critical wave frequency in a particular flow discharge in which the waves are effectively blocked and is established using the linear dispersion relation. The purpose of this work is to identify wave-blocking and its influence on the development of bedforms over the sediment bed. Interestingly bedform signatures are observed at a transition of bedforms in three zones, with asymmetric ripples having a steeper slope downstream face induced by the incoming current, followed by flat sand bars beneath the wave-blocking zone and more symmetric ripples below the wave-dominated region at the downstream. This phenomenon suggests that the sediment bed is segmented into three different regions of bed geometry along the flow. The deviations of mean flows, Reynolds stresses, turbulent kinetic energy, and power spectral density due to the wave-blocking phenomenon are presented along the non-uniform flow over sediment bed. The bottom shear stress, bed roughness and stochastic nature of the bedform features are also discussed. The results are of relevance to engineers and geoscientists concerned with contemporary process as well as those interested in the interpretation of palaeoenvironmental conditions from fossil bedforms. © 2019 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd. 相似文献

The influence of sand and mud transport on the morphological behaviour of a short tidal basin is investigated in this paper. For this purpose, a morphological model is applied in which sand and mud transport are included and the temporal and spatial bed composition variations are taken into account. Initially, the morphological development shows a sand wave near the entrance of the basin and a mud deposition wave more landward. A quasi equilibrium bed level profile is found after a long period (order century) with a sandy bed surface over almost the entire basin and only a small muddy area near the landward end. The dimensionless ratio between the deposition and erosion flux turns out to be a crucial parameter for the understanding of the observed behaviour. Comparison with previous studies on short tidal basins for sand indicates only that the presence of mud in a combined sand mud model does not change the equilibrium bed level profile considerably for the applied parameter settings herein, but drastically decreases the morphological time scale. Comparison between model results and field data of the Wadden Sea suggests that the obtained bed level and bed composition profile are realistic, indicating that the process-based sand mud model is a first step towards a better understanding of sand mud distributions in tidal basins.

Flume experiments have been carried out to study the formation processes and the bed morphology of step–pool channels. From the experiments different step types and step configurations could be distinguished depending on the stream power. These step types can be seen as an image of the generation mechanisms of step–pool systems. These results suggest that the bed roughness geometry develops towards a condition that provides the maximum possible bed stability for a given grain size distribution. In contrast to a variety of other studies, antidunes did not contribute to the generation of the step structures. However, the data of the presented study fits well into the region of antidune formation proposed by Kennedy for sand‐bed rivers. This observation points out that step–pool field‐data located in the Kennedy region do not inevitably prove that antidunes played a role in step development. It is rather proposed that in Kennedy's region of antidune formation there exist hydraulic conditions where the flow resistance is maximized. It is suggested that such maximum flow resistance is associated with an optimal distance between the bedforms and their height, independently of whether these are antidunes in sand‐ and gravel‐bed rivers or step–pool units in boulder‐bed streams. The considerations of the Kennedy region of antidune formation and the analysis of planform step types depending on stream power both suggest that steep channels have a potential for self‐stabilization by modifying the step–pool structure towards a geometry that provides maximum flow resistance and maximum bed stability. The results of two field experiments are described, both of which were carried out at Blackpool Sands, Start Bay. In the first experiment in 1978, observations were made of the near-bed flow, and of the movement of coarse sand on the bed, beneath progressive swell waves in shallow water. In the second experiment in 1980, similar observations were made, but for a bed comprising medium to fine sand, and for a more varied range of wave periods. In addition, a number of observations were made of the formation of ripples on an initially flat sand bed. For the naturally rippled beds, critical conditions for the onset of vortex formation and shedding have been established, and reasonable agreement with previous laboratory results has been found. In particular, it has been shown that vortex formation occurs above the lee slopes of ripples only if the near-bed orbital excursion exceeds the ripple wavelength. Prior to certain experimental runs, the area of the seabed in the vicinity of the bottom rig was flattened by divers, and an (equilibrium) ripple pattern was allowed to develop. The wavelengths of the ripples which formed have been found to be in close agreement with the field results of previous workers. To examine in detail some of the properties of separating flow above a rippled bed, an irrotational standing vortex model is presented. 相似文献

Offshore gasmining is an example of a human intervention with a morphological impact. On land, it is usually attended with a dish-like bed depression. We show that, if located at sea, such a bed depression can become morphodynamically active by triggering mechanisms related to tidal sand bank formation. To that end, a simple morphological model is considered which describes an erodible bed subject to a tidal wave in a shallow sea. The continuous subsidence is modelled by a sink term in the sediment balance. Then, a linear approximation is carried out to describe the bed evolution after the onset of subsidence. The results, presented in physical space, show that the subsidence triggers the formation of a sand bank pattern that gradually spreads around the centre of subsidence, at a rate that may go up to 160 m year−1, depending on the tidal transport rate and the tidal eccentricity. The dimension of the depression does not affect the spreading rate nor the orientation of the sand banks, but it does influence their spacing. The main conclusion is that the horizontal extent of the area influenced by the bed depression by far exceeds that of the direct subsidence, thus showing that bed depressions on land and at sea indeed behave in fundamentally different ways. The results suggest that nonlinear effects are worthwhile to be investigated in order to describe finite amplitude development of sand banks as well as the interaction between subsidence and bed forms. 相似文献

We present a two-dimensional vertical (2DV) flow and morphological numerical model describing the behaviour of offshore sand waves. The model contains the 2DV shallow water equations, with a free water surface and a general bed load formula. The water movement is coupled to the sediment transport equation by a seabed evolution equation. Using this model, we investigate the evolution of sand waves in a marine environment. As a result, we find sand wave saturation for heights of 10–30% of the average water depth on a timescale of decades. The stabilization mechanism, causing sand waves to saturate, is found to be based on the balance between the shear stress at the seabed and the principle that sediment is transported more easily downhill than uphill. The migration rate of the sand waves decreases slightly during their evolution. For a unidirectional steady flow the sand waves become asymmetrical in the horizontal direction and for a unidirectional block current asymmetrical in the vertical. A sensitivity analysis showed the slope effect of the sediment transport plays an important role herein. Furthermore, the magnitude of the resistance at the seabed and the eddy viscosity influence both the timescale and height of sand waves. The order of magnitudes found of the time and spatial scales coincide with observations made in the southern bight of the North Sea, Japan and Spain. 相似文献

Suspended sediment-transport processes in Santa Monica and San Pedro Bay are analyzed using the sediment-transport capabilities of the Regional Oceanic Modeling System (roms). A one-month simulation for December 2001 has been carried out with a set of nested domains. The model inputs include tides, winds, surface waves, and idealized initial sediment conditions for sand and non-cohesive silt. Apart from the control run, the sensitivity of the results to surface waves, ripple roughness and bed armoring has been analyzed. From the control experiment, the horizontal transport of sand turns out to be limited to within a few km of the nearshore erosion zones. During high wave events, silt is transported over further distances and also partly offshelf in distinct plumes. The effectiveness of horizontal silt transport depends strongly on vertical mixing due to both surface wind stress and wave-enhanced bottom stress. High wave events coincident with strong winds (hence strong vertical mixing) are the most optimal conditions for sediment-transport. Excluding wave effects in the simulation shows that surface waves are the dominant factor in resuspending bed material on the Southern Californian shelves. The sensitivity experiments also show that the direct influence of additional ripple roughness on erosion and deposition is relatively weak. Switching off bed armoring locally results in increases of near-bottom concentrations by a factor of 20 for silt and a factor of 5 for sand as well as stronger spatial gradients in grain size. 相似文献

Flow and sedimentary processes in the meandering river South Esk,Glen Clova,Scotland 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Channel geometry, flow and sedimentation in a meander bend of the River South Esk were studied from bankfull stages (January–February) to low water stages (May) in 1974. Bed topography varied little over the study period, showing a typical pool and ripple geometry. Variation of mean depth and velocity with discharge differed from section to section around the bend, due primarily to locally varying flow resistance with stage. The flow pattern for all stages was dominated by a single spiral over the point bar, with a development zone at the bend entrance. Deviation of bed shear stress from the mean flow direction was in general accord with theory, especially for high stages. The use of a uniform longitudinal water surface slope in the calculation of bed shear stress is not justified because of a complicated water surface topography, also such calculated shear may not represent effective bed shear on grains, as it accounts also for energy losses associated with secondary flows. Dunes covered much of the bar at high stages, with increasing proportions of ripples, sand ribbons and lower phase plane beds at low stages. Local flow resistance generally decreases from dunes, diminished and ripple-backed dunes, ripples, sand ribbons to plane beds, and bed forms are predicted quite well by the stream power-grain size scheme. Mean size, sorting and skewness of sediment over the bed changes little with stage. In general, size decreases, sorting improves and skewness changes from positive to negative from the talweg to the inner bank, and in the downstream direction. Allen's (1970a, b) force balance equation for moving bed load particles is supported for bankfull stage, with some reservations, and textural characteristics are explained by progressive sorting in the direction of sediment transport. Large-scale trough cross stratification (with some flat bedding) formed at high stage by dunes (and lower phase plane beds) dominates the point bar sediments. Alternations of fine-medium sand (often cross-laminated) and vegetation-rich layers result from periodic deposition on the grassed upper bar surface. Fining upwards sequences produced by lateral channel migration are modified by a coarsening upward subsequence in the upstream bar region where spiral flow is developing from the bend upstream. 相似文献

DEVELOPMENT OF STEP-POOL SEQUENCE AND ITS EFFECTS IN RESISTANCE AND STREAM BED STABILITY 总被引:8,自引:0,他引:8

Experiments were conducted and field investigations were performed to study the development of step-pool sequence and its effects on resistance to the flow and stream bed stability. Step-pool sequence develops in incised channels as a result of streambed erosion, which is compared with sand dunes and armor layer of the role in resistance and streambed protection. The tight interlocking of particles in steps gives them an inherent stability which only extreme floods are likely to disturb. That stability suggests that step-pools are a valid equilibrium form, especially when coupled with their apparent regularity form and their role in satisfying the extreme condition of resistance maximization. The development degree of step-pools, SP, is proportional to the streambed slope. If the incoming sediment load is equal to or more than the sediment-carrying capacity of the flow, there is no bed erosion and thence there are no step-pools. If the flow depth increases and is over the step-height the resistance caused by the step-pool sequence will be greatly reduced. The rote of energy dissipation by step-pools is a function of SP. The higher is SP,, the larger is the rate of energy dissipation. The step-pool sequence increases the resistance and flow depth, reduces the shear stress of the flow and protects the streambed from erosion. Moreover, step-pool sequence provides ecologically sound habitats for aquatic bio-community as well. 相似文献

Twenty runs of experiments are carried out to investigate non-equilibrium transport of graded and uniform bed load sediment in a degrading channel. Well-sorted gravel and sand are employed to compose four kinds of sediment beds with different gravel/sand contents, i.e., uniform 100%gravel bed, uniform 100% sand bed, and two graded sediment beds respectively with 53% gravel and 47% sand as well as 22%gravel and 78%sand. For different sediment beds, the experiments are conducted under the same discharges, thereby allowing for the role of sediment composition in dictating the bed load transport rate to be identified. A new observed dataset is generated concerning the flow, sediment transport and evolution of bed elevation and composition, which can be exploited to underpin devel-opments of mathematical river models. The data shows that in a degrading channel, the sand greatly promotes the transport of gravel, whilst the gravel considerably hinders the transport of sand. The promoting and hindering effects are evaluated by means of impact factors defined based on sediment transport rates. The impact factors are shown to vary with flow discharge by orders of magnitude, being most pronounced at the lowest discharge. It is characterized that variations in sand or gravel inputs as a result of human activities and climate change may lead to severe morphological changes in degrading channels. 相似文献
