This paper describes the Canadian Meteor Orbit Radar (CMOR) that has been in operation since late 2001. CMOR is a 3 station meteor radar operating at a frequency of 29.85 MHz near Tavistock, Ont. To avoid bias against fragmenting meteoroids that is inherent in the traditional multi-station method of Gill and Davies (Mon. Not. R Astron. Soc. 116 (1955) 105), we use a completely geometrical method similar to that used in the AMOR system (Quart. J. R. Astron. Soc. 35 (1994) 293) based on the interferometric determination of the echo directions and the time delays of echoes from two remote stations to obtain the trajectories and speeds of meteoroids. We describe the hardware and some of the software and present some preliminary results that provide a good indication of present capabilities of the system. Typically, we can measure 1500 individual trajectories, and hence orbits, per day with a mean accuracy of 6° in direction and about 10% in speed. A small subset of these for which it is possible to measure the speeds using Hocking's (Radio. Sci. 35 (2000) 1205) method yield speeds with a precision of about 5%. The purpose of this paper is to show that the radiants and speeds necessary for the computation of orbits are well measured rather than to discuss any orbital surveys. 相似文献

Radio meteor observations by Ham-band beacon or FM radio broadcasts using “Ham-band Radio meteor Observation Fast Fourier
Transform” (HROFFT) an automatic operating software have been performed widely in recent days. Previously, counting of meteor
echoes on the spectrograms of radio meteor observation was performed manually by observers. In the present paper, we introduce
an automatic meteor echo counting software application. Although output images of the HROFFT contain both the features of
meteor echoes and those of various types of noises, a newly developed image processing technique has been applied, resulting
in software that enables a useful auto-counting tool. There exists a slight error in the processing on spectrograms when the
observation site is affected by many disturbing noises. Nevertheless, comparison between software and manual counting revealed
an agreement of almost 90%. Therefore, we can easily obtain a dataset of detection time, duration time, signal strength, and
Doppler shift of each meteor echo from the HROFFT spectrograms. Using this software, statistical analyses of meteor activities
is based on the results obtained at many Ham-band Radio meteor Observation (HRO) sites throughout the world, resulting in
a very useful “standard” for monitoring meteor stream activities in real time. 相似文献

Efforts to link minor meteor showers to their parent bodies have been hampered both by the lack of high-accuracy orbits for
weak showers and the incompleteness of our sample of potential parent bodies. The Canadian Meteor Orbital Radar (CMOR) has
accumulated over one million meteor orbits. From this large data set, the existence of weak showers and the accuracy of the
mean orbits of these showers can be improved. The ever-growing catalogue of near-Earth asteroids (NEAs) provides the complimentary
data set for the linking procedure. By combining a detailed examination of the background of sporadic meteors near the orbit
in question (which the radar data makes possible) and by computing the statistical significance of any shower association
(which the improved NEA sample allows) any proposed shower–parent link can be tested much more thoroughly than in the past.
Additional evidence for the links is provided by a single-station meteor radar at the CMOR site which can be used to dispel
confusion between very weak showers and statistical fluctuations in the sporadic background. The use of these techniques and
data sets in concert will allow us to confidently link some weak streams to their parent bodies on a statistical basis, while
at the same time showing that previously identified minor showers have little or no activity and that some previously suggested
linkages may simply be chance alignments. 相似文献

Recent advances in computing technology and our understanding of the processes involved in crater production, ejecta production, and crater erasure have permitted me to develop a highly-detailed Cratered Terrain Evolution Model (CTEM), which can be used to investigate a variety of questions in the study of impact dominated landscapes. In this work, I focus on the manner in which crater densities on impacted surfaces attain equilibrium conditions (commonly called crater ‘saturation’) for a variety of impactor population size-frequency distributions: from simple, straight-line power-laws, to complex, multi-sloped distributions. This modeling shows that crater density equilibrium generally occurs near observed relative-density (R) values of 0.1-0.3 (commonly called ‘empirical saturation’), but that when the impactor population has a variable power-law slope, crater density equilibrium values will also be variable, and will continue to reflect, or follow the shape of the production population long after the surface has been ‘saturated.’ In particular, I demonstrate that the overall level of crater density curves for heavily-cratered regions of the lunar surface are indicative of crater density equilibrium having been reached, while the shape of these curves strongly point to a Main Asteroid Belt (MAB) source for impactors in the near-Earth environment, as originally stipulated in Strom et al. [Strom, R.G., Malhotra, R., Ito, T., Yoshida, F., Kring, D.A., 2005. Science 309 (September), 1847-1850]. This modeling also validates the conclusion by Bottke et al. [Bottke, W.F., Durda, D.D., Nesvorný, D., Jedicke, R., Morbidelli, A., Vokrouhlický, D., Levison, H., 2005. Soon after the Cassini-Huygens spacecraft entered orbit about Saturn on 1 July 2004, its Visual and Infrared Mapping Spectrometer obtained two continuous spectral scans across the rings, covering the wavelength range 0.35-5.1 μm, at a spatial resolution of 15-25 km. The first scan covers the outer C and inner B rings, while the second covers the Cassini Division and the entire A ring. Comparisons of the VIMS radial reflectance profile at 1.08 μm with similar profiles at a wavelength of 0.45 μm assembled from Voyager images show very little change in ring structure over the intervening 24 years, with the exception of a few features already known to be noncircular. A model for single-scattering by a classical, many-particle-thick slab of material with normal optical depths derived from the Voyager photopolarimeter stellar occultation is found to provide an excellent fit to the observed VIMS reflectance profiles for the C ring and Cassini Division, and an acceptable fit for the inner B ring. The A ring deviates significantly from such a model, consistent with previous suggestions that this region may be closer to a monolayer. An additional complication here is the azimuthally-variable average optical depth associated with “self-gravity wakes” in this region and the fact that much of the A ring may be a mixture of almost opaque wakes and relatively transparent interwake zones. Consistently with previous studies, we find that the near-infrared spectra of all main ring regions are dominated by water ice, with a typical regolith grain radius of 5-20 μm, while the steep decrease in visual reflectance shortward of 0.6 μm is suggestive of an organic contaminant, perhaps tholin-like. Although no materials other than H2O ice have been identified with any certainty in the VIMS spectra of the rings, significant radial variations are seen in the strength of the water-ice absorption bands. Across the boundary between the C and B rings, over a radial range of ∼7000 km, the near-IR band depths strengthen considerably. A very similar pattern is seen across the outer half of the Cassini Division and into the inner A ring, accompanied by a steepening of the red slope in the visible spectrum shortward of 0.55 μm. We attribute these trends—as well as smaller-scale variations associated with strong density waves in the A ring—to differing grain sizes in the tholin-contaminated icy regolith that covers the surfaces of the decimeter-to-meter sized ring particles. On the largest scale, the spectral variations seen by VIMS suggest that the rings may be divided into two larger ‘ring complexes,’ with similar internal variations in structure, optical depth, particle size, regolith texture and composition. We use ROLO photometry (Kieffer, H.H., Stone, T.C. [2005]. Astron. J. 129, 2887-2901) to characterize the before and after full Moon radiance variation for a typical highlands site and a typical mare site. Focusing on the phase angle range 45° < α < 50°, we test two different physical models, macroscopic roughness and multiple scattering between regolith particles, for their ability to quantitatively reproduce the measured radiance difference. Our method for estimating the rms slope angle is unique and model-independent in the sense that the measured radiance factor I/F at small incidence angles (high Sun) is used as an estimate of I/F for zero roughness regolith. The roughness is determined from the change in I/F at larger incidence angles. We determine the roughness for 23 wavelengths from 350 to 939 nm. There is no significant wavelength dependence. The average rms slope angle is 22.2° ± 1.3° for the mare site and 34.1° ± 2.6° for the highland site. These large slopes, which are similar to previous “photometric roughness” estimates, require that sub-mm scale “micro-topography” dominates roughness measurements based on photometry, consistent with the conclusions of Helfenstein and Shepard (Helfenstein, P., Shepard, M.K. [1999]. Icarus 141, 107-131). We then tested an alternative and very different model for the before and after full Moon I/F variation: multiple scattering within a flat layer of realistic regolith particles. This model consists of a log normal size distribution of spheres that match the measured distribution of particles in a typical mature lunar soil 72141,1 (McKay, D.S., Fruland, R.M., Heiken, G.H. [1974]. Proc. Lunar Sci. Conf. 5, Geochim. Cosmochim. Acta 1 (5), 887-906). The model particles have a complex index of refraction 1.65-0.003i, where 1.65 is typical of impact-generated lunar glasses. Of the four model parameters, three were fixed at values determined from Apollo lunar soils: the mean radius and width of the log normal size distribution and the real part of the refraction index. We used FORTRAN programs from Mishchenko et al. (Mishchenko, M.I., Dlugach, J.M., Yanovitskij, E.G., Zakharova, N.T. [1999]. J. Quant. Spectrosc. Radiat. Trans. 63, 409-432; Mishchenko, M.I., Travis, L.D., Lacis, A.A. [2002]. Scattering, Absorption and Emission of Light by Small Particles. Cambridge Univ. Press, New York. <http://www.giss.nasa.gov/staff/mmishchenko/books.html>) to calculate the scattering matrix and solve the radiative transfer equation for I/F. The mean single scattering albedo is ω = 0.808, the asymmetry parameter is 〈cos Θ〉 = 0.77 and the phase function is very strongly peaked in both the forward and backward scattering directions. The fit to the observations for the highland site is excellent and multiply scattered photons contribute ?80% of I/F. We conclude that either model, roughness or multiple scattering, can match the observations, but that the strongly anisotropic phase functions of realistic particles require rigorous calculation of many orders of scattering or spurious photometric roughness estimates are guaranteed. Our multiple scattering calculation is the first to combine: (1) a regolith model matched to the measured particle size distribution and index of refraction of the lunar soil, (2) a rigorous calculation of the particle phase function and solution of the radiative transfer equation, and (3) application to lunar photometry with absolute radiance calibration. 相似文献

We have reanalysed a homogeneous catalogue of shell-type supernova remnants and we find that the radio data are consistent
with a birthrate of one in 22±3 yr. Our approach is based on the secular decrease of surface brightness of the historical
remnants whose ages are precisely known. The abovementioned birthrate is significantly higher than most previous estimates
which range from one in 50–150 yr, and is consistent with the supernova rate in our galaxy derived from historical observations,
as well as with recent estimates of the pulsar birthrate. 相似文献

Using a meteor orbit radar, a total of more than 2.5 million meteoroids with masses ∼10−7 kg have had orbits measured in the interval 2002-2006. From these data, a total of 45 meteoroid streams have been identified using a wavelet transform approach to isolate enhancements in radiant density in geocentric coordinates. Of the recorded streams, 12 are previously unreported or unrecognized. The survey finds >90% of all meteoroids at this size range are part of the sporadic meteoroid background. A large fraction of the radar detected streams have q<0.15 AU suggestive of a strong contribution from sungrazing comets to the meteoroid stream population currently intersecting the Earth. We find a remarkably long period of activity for the Taurid shower (almost half the year as a clearly definable radiant) and several streams notable for a high proportion of small meteoroids only, among these a strong new shower in January at the time of the Quadrantids (January Leonids). A new shower (Epsilon Perseids) has also been identified with orbital elements almost identical to Comet 96P/Machholz. 相似文献

We make a statistical analysis of the periodsP and period-derivativesP of pulsars using a model independent theory of pulsar flow in theP-P diagram. Using the available sample ofP andP values, we estimate the current of pulsars flowing unidirectionally along theP-axis, which is related to the pulsar birthrate. Because of radio luminosity selection effects, the observed pulsar sample
is biased towards lowP and highP. We allow for this by weighting each pulsar by a suitable scale factor. We obtain the number of pulsars in our galaxy to
be 6.05−2.80
+3.32 × 105 and the birthrate to be 0.048−0.011
+0.014 pulsars yr−1 galaxy−1. The quoted errors refer to 95 per cent confidence limits corresponding to fluctuations arising from sampling, but make no
allowance for other systematic and random errors which could be substantial. The birthrate estimated here is consistent with
the supernova rate. We further conclude that a large majority of pulsars make their first appearance at periods greater than
0.5 s. This ‘injection’, which runs counter to present thinking, is probably connected with the physics of pulsar radio emission.
Using a variant of our theory, where we compute the current as a function of pulsar ‘age’ (1/2P/P), we find support for the
dipole braking model of pulsar evolution upto 6 × 106 yr of age. We estimate the mean pulsar braking index to be 3.7−0.8

A 7 year survey using the Canadian Meteor Orbit Radar (CMOR), a specular backscattering orbital radar, has produced three million individually measured meteoroid orbits for particles with mean mass near 10−7 kg. We apply a 3D wavelet transform to our measured velocity vectors, partitioning them into 1° solar longitude bins while stacking all 7 years of data into a single “virtual” year to search for showers which show annual activity and last for at least 3 days. Our automated stream search algorithm has identified 117 meteor showers. We have recovered 42 of the 45 previously described streams from our first reconnaissance survey (Brown, P., Weryk, R.J., Wong, D.K., Jones, J. [2008]. Icarus 195, 317-339). Removing possible duplicate showers from the automated results leaves 109 total streams. These include 42 identified in survey I and at least 62 newly identified streams. Our large data sample and the enhanced sensitivity of the 3D wavelet search compared to our earlier survey have allowed us to extend the period of activity for several major showers. This includes detection of the Geminid shower from early November to late December and the Quadrantids from early November to mid-January. Among our newly identified streams are the Theta Serpentids which appears to be derived from 2008 KP and the Canum Venaticids which have a similar orbit to C/1975 X1 (Sato). We also find evidence that nearly 60% of all our streams are part of seven major stream complexes, linked via secular invariants. 相似文献

We undertake a quantitative investigation, using Monte Carlo simulations, of the amount by which quasars are expected to exceed radio galaxies in optical luminosity in the context of the 'receding torus' model. We compare these simulations with the known behaviour of the [O III ] λ5007 and [O II ] λ3727 emission lines and conclude that [O III ] is the better indicator of the strength of the underlying non-stellar continuum. 相似文献

We have developed 1D time-dependent numerical models of accretion discs, using an adaptive grid technique and an implicit numerical scheme, in which the disc size is allowed to vary with time. The code fully resolves the cooling and heating fronts propagating in the disc. We show that models in which the radius of the outer edge of the disc is fixed produce incorrect results, from which probably incorrect conclusions about the viscosity law have been inferred. In particular we show that outside-in outbursts are possible when a standard bimodal behaviour of the Shakura–Sunyaev viscosity parameter α is used. We also discuss to what extent insufficient grid resolution has limited the predictive power of previous models. We find that the global properties (magnitudes, etc.) of transient discs can be addressed by codes using a high, but reasonable, number of fixed grid points. However, the study of the detailed physical properties of the transition fronts generally requires resolutions which are out of reach of fixed grid codes. It appears that most time-dependent models of accretion discs published in the literature have been limited by resolution effects, improper outer boundary conditions, or both. 相似文献

We have reported, in our previous paper, on the near-infrared (NIR) identification of a possible counterpart to the black hole candidate XTE J1908+094 obtained with the European Southern Observatory/New Technology Telescope. Here, we present new, follow-up, Canada–France–Hawaii Telescope adaptive optics observations of the XTE J1908+094 field, which resolved the previously proposed counterpart in two objects separated by about 0.8 arcsec. Assuming that both objects are potential candidate counterparts, we derive that the binary system is a low-mass system with a companion star which could be either an intermediate/late type (A–K) main-sequence star at a distance of 3–10 kpc or a late-type (>K) main-sequence star at a distance of 1–3 kpc. However, we show that the brighter of the two objects ( J ∼ 20.1, H ∼ 18.7, K '∼ 17.8) is more likely to be the real counterpart of the X-ray source. Its position is more compatible with our astrometric solution, and colours and magnitudes of the other object are not consistent with the lower limit of 3 kpc derived independently from the peak bolometric flux of XTE J1908+094. Further multiwavelength observations of both candidate counterparts are crucial in order to solve the pending identification. 相似文献

An automatic procedure has been implemented on the original MGM approach (Sunshine et al., 1990) in order to deal with an a priori unknown mafic mineralogy observed in the visible-near infrared by reflectance spectroscopy in the case of laboratory or natural rock spectra. We consider all the mixture possibilities involving orthopyroxene, clinopyroxene and olivine, and use accordingly for each configuration different numbers of Gaussians, depending on the potential complexity of the mixture. A key issue is to initialize the MGM procedure with a proper setting for the Gaussians parameters. An automatic analysis of the shape of the spectrum is first performed. The continuum is handled with a second order polynomial adjusted on the local maxima along the spectrum and Gaussians parameters initial settings are made on the basis of laboratory results available in the literature in the case of simple mixtures of mafic minerals. The returned MGM solutions are then assessed on spectroscopic grounds and either validated or discarded, on the basis of a mineralogical sorting.The results presented in this paper are a first quantitative step to characterize both modal and chemical compositions of pyroxenes and olivines. A demonstration of the methodology on specific examples of binary and ternary olivine-pyroxenes mixtures has been made, which shows that the different non-linear effects which affect the Gaussian parameters (center and strength) can be successfully handled. Of note is the fact that the band center positions associated with the different mafic minerals are not set here in the inverse problem, and thus the MGM outputs are truly informative of the chemical composition of pyroxenes and olivines. With the consideration of some limits on the detection thresholds, these results are quite promising for increasing the operational use of the Modified Gaussian Model with large hyperspectral data sets in view of establishing detailed mineralogical mappings of magmatic units. 相似文献

High-resolution MERLIN observations of a newly discovered four-image gravitational lens system, B0128+437, are presented. The system was found after a careful re-analysis of the entire CLASS data set. The MERLIN observations resolve four components in a characteristic quadruple-image configuration; the maximum image separation is 542 mas and the total flux density is 48 mJy at 5 GHz. A best-fitting lens model with a singular isothermal ellipsoid results in large errors in the image positions. A significantly improved fit is obtained after the addition of a shear component, suggesting that the lensing system is more complex and may consist of multiple deflectors. The integrated radio spectrum of the background source indicates that it is a gigahertz peaked spectrum source. It may therefore be possible to resolve structure within the radio images with deep VLBI observations and thus to constrain the lensing mass distribution better. 相似文献
