We have analyzed more than 90 papers in the area “Magnetic fields and physical parameters of chemically peculiar and related stars,” published mainly in 2016. The main results of the period under survey are as follows. The search for new magnetic stars continued. Many measurements weremade at the 6-m BTA telescope of the SAO RAS, new data on stellar magnetism in the OrionOB1 association were obtained. A systematic study ofmagnetic fields of stars with large anomalies in the energy distribution in the continuum was started. New data on ultra-slowmagnetic rotators—chemically peculiar stars with rotation periods of years and decades are obtained. Successful observations on the search for new magnetic stars are performed among the objects of the southern sky in Chile at the FORS2 VLT spectropolarimeter. A new direction was developed, namely, the study of binarymagnetic stars. Depending on the mass–distance ratio between the components, interaction with the magnetosphere and, possibly, magnetic braking may occur. The study of the details of this process is important for the theory of formation of stellar magnetic fields. The search for large-scale, but weak magnetic fields (magnitude of unities and tens of G) in non-CP stars is ongoing. Such fields are found in Am stars. No fields were found in the classical Be stars. Cool stars of various types were studied in detail. They manifested magnetic fields of a complex structure. Their mapping was performed, changes in the topology of the field were found at timescales of several years. Spectral and photometric variability was studied. Dozens of new potentially magnetic stars are discovered as a result of the ASAS-3, SuperWASP, Stereo and Kepler surveys. High-accuracy observations of rapidly oscillating stars were performed with the BRITE nanosatellite.Work continued on the studies of magnetic and photometric variability of white dwarfs. Finally, an overview of several papers on exoplanets, related with the subject of our study is presented.  相似文献

We present an analytical survey of key publications concerned with the study of stellar magnetism published in 2015. We considered about 80 publications, the most significant from our point of view, presented brief reviews of them, and made generalizations. The paper considers: instruments, techniques of observations and analysis; large-scale magnetic fields of OBA stars on the Main Sequence (MS) (formation and evolution, field topology, search for new magnetic stars including the projects MiMeS, BOB, and BinaMIcS and observations with the Russian 6-m telescope, rotation and chemical abundance analysis of magnetic CP stars); magnetic fields, chemical abundance and variability of stars related to peculiar, primarily, active cool stars, solar-type stars and white dwarfs; multiple magnetic stars including interferometry data, exoplanets in a system of magnetic stars. We make a conclusion that the accuracy of magnetic field measurements has grown due to universal application of the multilinear method of observations especially with high-resolution spectropolarimeters. Usage of Zeeman-Doppler imaging technique (ZDI) when analyzing the obtained data allows us to confidently search and measure fields of complex topology of the order of 10 Gs. For the first time, a magnetic field has been detected for post-AGB stars and some other types of objects.  相似文献

We make a comparative analysis of magnetic fields and rotation parameters of magnetic CP stars with strong and weak anomalies in the spectral energy distribution. Stars with strong depressions in the continuum at 5200 Å are shown to have significantly stronger fields (the mean longitudinal component of the fields of these stars is 〈B e〉 = 1341 ± 98 G) compared to objects with weaker depressions (〈B e〉 = 645 ± 58 G). Stars with stronger depressions are also found to occur more commonly among slow rotators. Their rotation periods are, on the average, about 10 days long, three times longer than these of stars with weak depressions (about three days). This fact is indicative of a decrease of the degree of anomality of the magnetic stars continuum spectrum with increasing rotational velocity. Yet another proof has been obtained suggesting that slow rotation is one of the crucial factors contributing to the development of the phenomenon of magnetic chemically peculiar stars.Magnetic CP stars with weak depressions at 5200 Å are intermediate objects between stars with strong depressions and normal A- and B-type stars both in terms of field strength and rotational velocity.  相似文献

The magnetic fields of a sample of chemically peculiar stars, in which they had not been detected earlier, are reinvestigated on the basis of our own measurements and literature data. Despite the considerably higher measurement accuracy, again no magnetic fields were detected in any of them. An upper limit on the field of HD 10221 of 40 G was obtained. Despite the weakness of the fields, the parameters characterizing an anomaly in chemical composition correspond to those for strong fields. The same parameters in stars with strong fields generally correspond in value, although they are lower than expected in the case of HD 47152.  相似文献

This is the first paper of the series dedicated to the analysis of the magnetism of chemically peculiar (CP) stars of the upper Main Sequence. We use our own measurements and published data to compile a catalog of magnetic CP stars containing a total of 326 objects with confidently detected magnetic fields and 29 stars which are very likely to possess magnetic field. We obtained the data on the magnetism of the overwhelming majority of the stars solely based on the analysis of longitudinal field component B e . The surface magnetic field, B s , has been measured for 49 objects. Our analysis shows that the number of magnetic CP stars decreases with increasing field strength in accordance with exponential law, and stars with B e exceeding 5kG occur rarely (about 3% objects of our list).  相似文献

This paper presents a catalogue and the method of determining averaged quadratic effective magnetic fields  〈 B e〉  for 1212 main-sequence and giant stars, and 11 white dwarf stars. The catalogue includes stars that are members of several open clusters. We have compiled measurements of the longitudinal magnetic field for those stars, which were scattered in the existing literature. A new parameter, magnetization (MA), has been defined, and we present values of MA for stars of various spectral classes. Our sample includes a subset of 610 chemically peculiar early-type stars. We confirm the conclusion of our previous study that the number distribution of all chemically peculiar stars versus the averaged magnetic field strength is described by a decreasing exponential function. Relations of this type also hold for stars of all the analysed subclasses of chemical peculiarity. Magnetization tends to correlate with the effective temperature only at high MA, for He-weak and He-rich stars.  相似文献

The magnetic chemically peculiar (CP2) stars of the upper main sequence are well‐suited for investigating the impact of magnetic fields on the surface layers of stars, which leads to abundance inhomogeneities (spots) resulting in photometric variability. The light changes are explained in terms of the oblique rotator model; the derived photometric periods thus correlate with the rotational periods of the stars. CP2 stars exhibiting this kind of variability are classified as α2 Canum Venaticorum (ACV) variables. We have analysed around 3850000 individual photometric WASP measurements of magnetic chemically peculiar (CP2) stars and candidates selected from the catalogue of Ap, HgMn, and Am stars, with the ultimate goal of detecting new ACV variables. In total, we found 80 variables, from which 74 are reported here for the first time. The data allowed us to establish variability for 23 stars which had been reported as probably constant in the literature before. Light curve parameters were obtained for all stars by a least‐squares fit with the fundamental sine wave and its first harmonic. Because of the scarcity of Strömgren uvbyβ measurements and the lack of parallax measurements with an accuracy better than 20%, we are not able to give reliable astro‐physical parameters for the investigated objects. The magnetic fields of the chemically peculiar stars HD 115708 and HD 119419 were modeled using observed curves of variation of the magnetic field with the phase of the rotational period. It turned out that the field of HD 115708 is described, in a first approximation, by a central dipole, while the field of HD 119419 is described by an off-center dipole. The main parameters of the magnetic fields of both stars and maps of the surface field-strength distribution were obtained. The dipole axis of the first star lies in the equatorial plane while that of the second is almost parallel to the axis of rotation.  相似文献

This paper reviews the current state of the problem of magnetism in massive Main Sequence stars. Chemically peculiar Bp stars with enhanced silicon lines and anomalous helium lines in their spectra are shown to be the most promising targets for the observational verification of various mechanisms of the formation and subsequent evolution of magnetic fields in CP stars. A catalog of magnetic Bp stars, containing 125 objects is prepared. Applying different criteria, we compiled a variety of magnetic star samples, which were then used to analyze magnetic fields in objects of different ages. The results of this analysis show that massive stars generally have stronger fields in all the samples studied, and thus confirm earlier results based on smaller star samples. No tight relation is observed and the parameters of individual objects show a very large scatter about the mean relation. The strongest and most complex fields are found in the youngest Bp stars with ages below 30 Myr. Magnetic Bp stars generally rotate slower than normal B-type stars, except for the hottest objects with enhanced helium lines, which have normal rotation velocities. No systematic differences are found between the angular rotation velocities of Bp stars with anomalous helium and silicon lines. We discuss various criteria, which can be used to observationally test the alternative mechanisms of formation and evolution of magnetic fields in CP stars and, in particular, to quantitatively compare not only the magnitudes, but also the topology of fields in objects of different ages.  相似文献

Summary Magnetic fields have now been detected in stars in several parts of the Hertzsprung-Russell diagram. Roughly dipolar fields ranging in strength between 3× 102 and 3×104 G are found in many chemically peculiar A and B main sequence stars. Dipolar fields are also found in some 2–3% of white dwarfs, but with strengths between 1×106 and 5×108 G. In both these types of stars, the observed fields vary as the underlying star turns, but do not change in a secular manner. In solartype stars, structurally complex fields of a few kG are found with filling factors of the order of 0.1 to 0.8. Further indirect evidence of fields in cool main sequence stars is provided by detection of visible and ultraviolet line emission (chromospheric activity), x radiation (coronal matter), and giant starspots. In this review, we survey the observations of stellar magnetism in all these types of stars, as well as efforts to model the observed magnetic fields and associated photospheric peculiarities and activity. This article was processed by the author using the Springer-Verlag TEX AAR macro package 1991.  相似文献

A total of 85 CP stars of various types are identified among 814 members of the OriOB1 association. The fraction of CP stars decreases with age for different cluster subgroups: from 15.1% in the youngest subgroup (b) to 7.7% in the oldest one (a). Individual comments are provided for each of the 85 stars, where we analyze the physical parameters and distance of the objects. All the 23 Am stars identified as a result of this study are found to have heliocentric distances between 100 and 300 pc and appear not to be members of the OrionOB1 association, but foreground objects. We identified 59 Bp stars, which account for 13.4% of the total number of B-type stars in the association. The fraction of peculiar B-type stars in the OriOB1 association is found to be twice higher than that of peculiar A-type stars. The same is true for field stars. The association contains 22 magnetic stars, out of which 21 are Bp stars and only one is an Ap star. Seventeen of these stars are objects with anomalous helium lines. Magnetic stars show a well-defined tendency to concentrate in the central region of the association (in Orion’s Belt), which contains most of these objects. No significant differences are found between the field strengths in the B-type stars of the association and Bp-type field stars, although there is a noticeable trend for He-rich stars to have stronger fields compared to He-weak stars. We identified 17 binaries, which make up 20% of the total number of peculiar stars studied, which is the standard ratio for CP stars. Except for one HgMn star (HD35548), the radial velocities and proper motions of our identified objects are consistent with the corresponding parameters of normal B-type stars.  相似文献

This paper continues a series of reviews dedicated to magnetic CP stars. The occurrence frequency of CP stars among B5–F0-type main-sequence stars is shown to be equal to about 15–20%. The problems of identification and classification of these objects are addressed. We prefer the classification of Preston, which subdivides chemically peculiar stars into the following groups: Am, λ Boo, Ap/Bp, Hg-Mn, He-weak, and He-strong stars. The main characteristic features of objects of each group are briefly analyzed. The rotation velocities of CP stars are shown to be about three times lower than those of normal stars of the same spectral types (except for λ Boo and He-strong objects). The rotation periods of CP stars range from 0.5 to 100 days, however, there is also a small group of objects with especially long (up to several tens of years) variability periods. All kinds of peculiar stars can be found in visual binaries, with Am-and Hg-Mn-type stars occurring mostly in short-period binaries with P < 10 days, and the binary rate of these stars is close to normal. The percentage of binaries among magnetic stars (20%) is lower than among normal stars. A rather large fraction of CP1-and CP2-type stars was found to occur in young clusters (with ages smaller than 107 years). Photometric and spectral variability of peculiar stars of various types is discussed, and it is shown that only objects possessing magnetic fields exhibit light and spectral variations. The chemical composition of the atmospheres of CP stars of various types is considered. The abundances of various elements are usually determined by comparing the line profiles in the observed spectrum with those of the synthetic spectra computed for various model atmospheres. Different mechanisms are shown to contribute to chemical inhomogeneity at the star’s surface, and the hypothesis of selective diffusion of atoms in a stable atmosphere is developed. Attention is also paid to the problems of the determination of local chemical composition including the stratification of elements. Some of the coolest SrCrEu peculiar stars are found to exhibit fast light variations with periods ranging from 6 to 15 min. These variations are unassociated with rotation, but are due to nonradial pulsations. The final part of the the review considers the fundamental parameters of CP stars. The effective temperatures, luminosities, radii, and masses of these objects are shown to agree with the corresponding physical parameters of normal main-sequence stars of the same spectral types.  相似文献

We present the results of measurements of magnetic fields of chemically peculiar (CP) stars, performed from the shifts between the circularly polarized components of metal and hydrogen lines (the Babcock method). The observations are carried out with an analyzer of circular polarization at the 6‐m telescope of the SAO RAS. We found that for the absolute majority of the objects studied (in 22 CP stars out of 23), the magnetic fields, determined from the Zeeman shifts in the hydrogen line cores, are significantly lower than those obtained from metal lines in the same spectra. This disparity varies between the stars. We show that instrumental effects can not produce the above features, and discuss the possible causes of the observed effect. The discovered condition reveals a more complicated structure of magnetic fields of CP stars than a simple dipole, in particular, a reduction of the field strength in the upper atmosphere with the vertical gradient, significantly higher than the dipole (© 2011 WILEY‐VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. The applications of the spectral analysis methods discovered by Kirchhoff for the investigation of stellar magnetic fields are considered. The statistical properties of the mean magnetic fields for OBA stars have been investigated by analyzing data from two catalogs of magnetic fields. It is shown that the mean effective magnetic field ℬ of a star can be used as a statistically significant characteristic of its magnetic field. The magnetic field distribution functions F(ℬ) have been constructed for B-type and chemically peculiar (CP) stars, which exhibit a power-law dependence on ℬ. A sharp decrease in F(ℬ) in the range of weak magnetic fields has been found. The statistical properties of the magnetic fluxes for main-sequence stars, white dwarfs, and neutron stars are analyzed.  相似文献

We present the results of magnetic field measurements of four chemically peculiar (CP) stars, the members of the Orion stellar association OB1. Observations were carried out with the circular polarization analyzer at the Main Stellar Spectrograph of the 6-m telescope. All the studied stars refer to the subtype of Bp stars with weak helium lines. Canadian astronomer E. F. Borra detected a magnetic field in three of them (HD35456, HD36313, and HD36526) from the Balmer line magnetometer observations. HD35881 was observed for the first time for the purpose to search for a magnetic field. We obtained the following results: HD35456 is a magnetic star with longitudinal field variation range from +300 to +650 G and a period of 4.9506 days; HD35881 is possible a new magnetic star, the longitudinal component of which varies from?1 to +1 kGwith a period of 0.6998 days, however, a small number of lines broadened by rotation does not allow us to conduct measurements more accurately; HD36313 is a binary star with the components similar in brightness, the primary component is a magnetic star with broad lines, the magnetic field of the secondary component (the star with narrow lines) was not detected. Measurements in the Hβ hydrogen line showed the variations of the longitudinal component from ?1.5 to +2 kG with a period of 1.17862 days; a strong longitudinal field was detected in HD36526 (from 0 to +3000 G) varying with a rotation period of the star of 3.081 days. In all the cases, we observe considerable discrepancies with the data on magnetic fields of these objects obtained earlier.  相似文献

We present the results of measurements of magnetic fields, radial velocities and rotation velocities for 92 objects, mainly main-sequence chemically peculiar stars. Observations were performed at the 6-m BTA telescope using Main Stellar Spectrograph with a Zeeman analyzer. In 2010, twelve new magnetic stars were discovered: HD 17330, HD 29762, HD 49884, HD 54824, HD 89069, HD 96003, HD 113894, HD 118054, HD 135679, HD 138633, HD 138777, BD +53.1183. The presence of a field is suspected in HD 16705, HD 35379 and HD 35881. Observations of standard stars without a magnetic field confirm the absence of systematic errors which can introduce distortions into the measurements of longitudinal field. The paper gives comments on the results of investigation of each star.  相似文献

It is essential for the understanding of stellar structure models of high mass stars to explain why constant stars, nonpulsating chemically peculiar hot Bp stars and pulsating stars co‐exist in the slowly pulsating B stars and β Cephei instability strips. We have conducted a search for magnetic fields in the four Bp stars HD55522, HD105382, HD131120, and HD138769 which previously have been wrongly identified as slowly pulsating B stars. A recent study of these stars using the Doppler Imaging technique revealed that the elements He and Si are inhomogeneously distributed on the stellar surface, causing the periodic variability. Using FORS 1 in spectropolarimetric mode at the VLT, we have acquired circular polarisation spectra to test the presence of a magnetic field in these stars. A variable magnetic field is clearly detected in HD55522 and HD105382, but no evidence for the existence of a magnetic field was found in HD131120. The presence of a magnetic field in HD138769 is suggested by one measurement at 3σ level. We discuss the occurrence of magnetic B stars among the confirmed pulsating B stars and find strong magnetic fields of order kG and oscillations to be mutually exclusive. Observations with the 6-m telescope revealed eight new magnetic, chemically peculiar stars: HD 29925, HD 40711, HD 115606, HD 168796, HD 178892, HD 196691, HD 209051, and BD+32°2827. Zeeman observations of all these objects have been carried out for the first time. We selected candidates by analyzing the depression profile at a wavelength of λ5200 Å. This technique for selecting candidate magnetic stars was shown to be efficient: we found magnetic fields in 14 of the 15 objects that we selected for our observations with a Zeeman analyzer. A maximum longitudinal field strength B e exceeding 8 kG was found in HD 178892; in HD 209051 and HD196691, B e reaches 3.3 and 2.2 kG, respectively. For the remaining stars, we obtained lower limits of the longitudinal field (more than several hundred G).  相似文献

The upper main sequence is home to a diverse family of chemically peculiar stars, including λ Boo, Am-Fm, Bp-Ap, HgMn, He-weak, and He-rich varieties. This paper presents an informal review of the physical properties of these objects, including their location in the H-R diagram, frequency of incidence, rotation, binarity, magnetic fields, and variability. Part of the discussion is devoted to describing the bizarre surface compositions encountered in chemically peculiar stars, with an emphasis on insights provided by a generation of ultraviolet observations obtained with theIUE satellite. The paper concludes with an overview of the radiative diffusion mechanism which has been proposed as an explanation of the chemically peculiar phenomenon.  相似文献

We present our extensive project of the On‐line database of photometric observations of magnetic chemically peculiar stars to collect published data of photometric observations of magnetic chemically peculiar (mCP) stars in the optical and near IR regions. Now the nascent database contains more than 107 000 photometric measurements of 102 mCP stars and will be continually supplemented with published or new photometric data on these and about 150 additional mCP stars. This report describes the structure and organization of the database. Moreover, for the all included data we estimated the error of measurements and the effective amplitudes of the light curves.
