Six nights of R-band CCD observations of the classical Kuiper Belt Object (KBO) 20000 Varuna (2000 WR106) were obtained at the Palomar Mountain 60- and 200-in telescopes. The observations were scheduled to take advantage of a particularly favorable apparition which allowed us to sample down to extremely small solar phase angle (α=0.036°). After rotational lightcurve subtraction, we found that the KBO exhibited a strong opposition surge of ∼0.1 mag at phase angles α<0.1°. We modeled our composite solar phase curve of Varuna using both H-G parameterization and Hapke theory and concluded that similar opposition surges may be wide spread among KBOs and that the regolith of Varuna may be significantly more porous than a typical main-belt C-type asteroid. Wide-spread opposition surges lead to higher albedos than derived assuming linear phase behavior: on the whole KBOs may be brighter than previously assumed. 相似文献

We have observed well-sampled phase curves for nine Trojan asteroids in B-, V-, and I-bands. These were constructed from 778 magnitudes taken with the 1.3-m telescope on Cerro Tololo as operated by a service observer for the SMARTS consortium. Over our typical phase range of 0.2-10°, we find our phase curves to be adequately described by a linear model, for slopes of 0.04-0.09 mag/° with average uncertainty less than 0.02 mag/°. (The one exception, 51378 (2001 AT33), has a formally negative slope of −0.02 ± 0.01 mag/°.) These slopes are too steep for the opposition surge mechanism to be shadow-hiding (SH), so we conclude that the dominant surge mechanism must be coherent backscattering (CB). In a detailed comparison of surface properties (including surge slope, B-R color, and albedo), we find that the Trojans have surface properties similar to the P and C class asteroids prominent in the outer main belt, yet they have significantly different surge properties (at a confidence level of 99.90%). This provides an imperfect argument against the traditional idea that the Trojans were formed around Jupiter’s orbit. We also find no overlap in Trojan properties with either the main belt asteroids or with the small icy bodies in the outer Solar System. Importantly, we find that the Trojans are indistinguishable from other small bodies in the outer Solar System that have lost their surface ices (such as the gray Centaurs, gray Scattered Disk Objects, and dead comets). Thus, we find strong support for the idea that the Trojans originally formed as icy bodies in the outer Solar System, were captured into their current orbits during the migration of the gas giant planets, and subsequently lost all their surface ices. 相似文献

Hubble Space Telescope (HST) Wide-Field Planetary Camera (WFPC2) observations at phase angles in the range α=0.26°-6.4° obtained at every opposition and near quadrature between October 1996 and December 2002 reveal the opposition effect of Enceladus. We present a photometric analysis of nearly 200 images obtained through the five broadband UVBRI filters (F336W, F439W, F555W, F675W, and F814W) and the F785LP and F1042M filters from which we generate mutually consistent solar and rotational phase curves. Our solar phase curves reveal a dramatic, sharp increase in the albedo (from 0.11 mag in the F675W filter to 0.17 mag in the F785LP filter) as phase angles decrease from 2° to 0.26°. A slight opposition effect is evident in data from the F1042M filter (λeff=1022 nm); however, the smallest phase angle currently available for observations from this filter is α=0.58°. With the addition of data from the F255W filter we demonstrate the wavelength dependence of the albedo of the trailing hemisphere from 275 to 1022 nm. Our rotation curves show that the trailing hemisphere is ∼0.06 mag brighter than the leading when observed at wavelengths between 338 and 868 nm and 0.11 mag brighter than the leading at 1022 nm. We have supplemented the phase curve from the F439W filter (λeff=434 nm) with Voyager clear filter (λeff=480 nm) observations made at larger phase angles (α=13°-43°) to produce a phase curve with the most extensive phase angle coverage possible to date. This newly expanded range of phase angles enhances the ability of the Hapke photometric model (Hapke B., 2002, Icarus 157, 523-534) to relate physical characteristics of the surface of Enceladus to the manner in which incident light is reflected from it. We present Hapke 2002 model fits to solar phase curves from each UVBRI filter as well as from the F785LP and F1042M filters. Geometric albedos derived from these model fits range from p=0.92±0.01 at 1022 nm to p=1.41±0.03 at 549 nm, necessitating an increase of about 20% from previously derived values. Our Hapke fits demonstrate that the opposition surge of Enceladus is best described by a model which combines both moderate shadow-hiding and narrow coherent backscattering components. 相似文献

We present observations of the Centaur (32532) 2001 PT13 taken between September 2000 and December 2000. A multi-wavelength lightcurve was assembled from V-, R- and J-band photometry measurements. Analysis of the lightcurve indicates that there are two peaks of slightly different brightness, a rotation period of 0.34741±0.00005 day, and a maximum photometric range of 0.18 mag. We obtained VRJHK colors (V-R=0.50±0.01, V-J=1.69±0.02, V-H=2.19±0.04, and V-K=2.30±0.04) that are consistent with the grey KBO/Centaur population. The V-R color shows no variation as a function of rotational phase; however, we cannot exclude the possibility that rotational variations are present in the R-J color. Assuming a 4% albedo, we estimate that 2001 PT13 has an effective diameter of 90 km and a minimum axial ratio a/b of 1.18. We find no evidence of a coma and place an upper limit of 15 g s−1 on the dust production rate. 相似文献

New photometric data of the light curve of the minor planet (89) Julia were obtained on nine nights during the 1972 opposition using the 60cm telescope at OHP. A synodic period of 11h23m14s ± 7s and an amplitude of 0.25mag were derived from the measurements. The light curve is rather unsymmetric and no plausible explanation for this has been offered so far. The measurements have been carried out in instrumental V′; the data obtained in B′ and U′ supplement all conclusions from V′ data concerning the rotation of Julia. 相似文献

We present 26 lightcurves of 16 Psyche from 1975 and 1976. The synodic period during this apparition was 4h.1958. Combining photometric data from this opposition with those from previous apparitions allowed us to derive a mean phase coefficient in V of 0.026 ± 0.002 mag/deg and to establish that Psyche's absolute V0 magnitude and rotational amplitude vary with aspect; at 90° aspect, V0(1, 0) = 6.27 ± 0.05 and the lightcurve amplitude is 0.30 mag, while at 0° or 180° aspect, V0(1, 0) = 6.02 ± 0.02 and the amplitude is ?0.03 mag. This behavior is accounted for if, to first order, Psyche's shape is that of a triaxial ellipsoid with axial ratios near 5:4:3. Colors at zero phase are U-B = 0.26 ± 0.01 and B-V = 0.71 ± 0.01. Color phase coefficients are <0.001 mag/deg in U-B and 0.0010 ± 0.0004 mag/deg in B-V. 相似文献

Nereid is a small irregular moon of Neptune that displays large-, moderate-, and small-amplitude photometric variations on both fast and slow time scales. The central mystery of Nereid is now to explain the physical mechanism of these unique brightness changes and why they change with time. To characterize Nereid's variability, we have been using the SMARTS telescopes on Cerro Tololo for synoptic monitoring from 1999 to 2006. We present a well-sampled photometric time series of 493 magnitudes on 246 nights mostly in the V-band. In combination with our earlier data (for 774 magnitudes over 362 nights), our 20-year data set is the most comprehensive for any small icy body in our Solar System. Our yearly light curves show that Nereid displays various types of behaviors: large amplitude brightenings and fadings (1987 to 1990); moderate-amplitude variation about the average phase curve (1993-1997, 2003, 2005), moderate-amplitude variation and systematically brighter by roughly one-quarter magnitude throughout the entire season (2004); and nearly constant light curves superimposed on a surprisingly large-amplitude opposition surge (1998, 1999, 2000, 2006). Other than in 2004, Nereid's variations were closely centered around a constant phase curve that is well fit with a Hapke model for the coherent backscattering opposition surge mechanism with angular scale of 0.7°±0.1°. In our entire data set from 1987-2006, we find no significant periodicity. We propose that the year-to-year changes in the variability of Nereid are caused by forced precession (caused by tidal forces from Neptune) on the spin axis of a nonspherical Nereid, such that cross-sectional areas and average albedos change as viewed from Earth. 相似文献

The outer Solar System object (29981) 1999 TD10 was observed simultaneously in the R, and J and H bands in September 2001, and in B, V, R, and I in October 2002. We derive BV=0.80±0.05 mag, VR=0.48±0.05 mag, RI=0.44±0.05 mag, RJ=1.24±0.05 mag, and JH=0.61±0.07 mag. Combining our data with the data from Rousselot et al. (2003, Astron. Astrophys. 407, 1139) we derive a synodic period of 15.382±0.001 hr in agreement with the period from Rousselot et al. Our observations at the same time, with better S/N and seeing, show no evidence of a coma, contrary to the claim by Choi et al. (2003, Icarus 165, 101). 相似文献

We present physical measurements of the newly discovered asteroid, (5145) Pholus, based on seven nights of photometric observations. These observations determine an unambiguous lightcurve period of 9.9825 ± 0.0040 hr with a peak-to-peak amplitude of 0.15 mag. We also report a rotationally independent color of (VR) = 0.810 ± 0.006 (Kron-Cousins R). The standard IAU two parameter fit versus solar phase angle yields HV = 7.645 ± 0.011 and GV = 0.16 ± 0.08. Except for its color and orbit, (5145) Pholus exhibits normal asteroidal properties. 相似文献

We present our 2-year-long photometric (V, R c, I c) observations of the T Tauri star V1184 Tau. They show that the relatively quiet “photometric life” of this object, which ended in 2004 with a sharp brightness decline by four magnitudes, was succeeded by a qualitatively new (in nature) period of activity characterized by high-amplitude irregular photometric variability. Judging by its color variations, the object belongs to the class of UX Ori stars and, hence, variable circumstellar extinction is responsible for its brightness variations. Moreover, the (V?I c)/V color-magnitude diagram for the object is identical to that for UX Ori itself, suggesting that the optical properties of dust grains in the circumstellar space of these stars are similar. At the same time, V1184 Tau is quite dissimilar to UX Ori stars in its light curve, variability amplitude (reaching 4.5 magnitudes in the V band), and some other parameters. 相似文献

We present the results of photometric observations of trans-neptunian object 20000 Varuna, which were obtained during 7 nights in November 2004-February 2005. The analysis of new and available photometric observations of Varuna reveals a pronounced opposition surge at phase angles less than 0.1 deg with amplitude of 0.2 mag relatively to the extrapolation of the linear part of magnitude-phase dependence to zero phase angle. The opposition surge of Varuna is markedly different from that of dark asteroids while quite typical for moderate albedo Solar System bodies. We find an indication of variations of the scattering properties over Varuna's surface that could result in an increase of the lightcurve amplitude toward zero phase angle. It is shown that a similar phase effect can be responsible for lightcurve changes found for TNO 19308 (1996 TO66) in 1997-1999. 相似文献

Voyager imaging observations provide new photometric data on Saturn's satellites at large phase angles (up to 133° in the case of Mimas) not observable from Earth. Significant new results include the determination of phase integrals ranging from 0.7 in the case of Rhea to 0.9 for Enceladus. For Enceladus we find an average geometric albedo pv = 1.04 ± 0.15 and Bond albedo of 0.9 ± 0.1. The data indicate an orbital lightcurve with an amplitude of 0.2 mag, the trailing side being the brighter. For Mimas, the lightcurve amplitude is probably less than 0.1 mag. The value of the geometric albedo of Mimas reported here, pv = 0.77 ± 0.15 (corresponding to a mean opposition magnitude V0 = +12.5) is definitely higher than the currently accepted value of about 0.5. For Dione, the Voyager data show a well-defined orbital lightcurve of amplitude about 0.6 mag, with the leading hemisphere brighter than the trailing one. 相似文献

We present photometry, V and (B - V), of Iapetus at six western elongations (the phase of maximum brightness) that span a range in solar phase, α, from ≈6° to <0°.4, and we find that a substantial opposition effect, >0.12 mag (V), is present. We make a few cautious remarks about the possible relevance of the use of this result to interpret the phase curve of Saturn's ring. We also give a few measures of Rhea and Hyperion, at α ? 0.3°, and more of Titan, which indicate that the latter has been anomalously bright during much of 1973 and 1974, sometimes by nearly 0.1 mag (V). 相似文献

We present the results of the blazar 3C 345 monitoring in Johnson‐Cousins BVRI bands for the period 1996–2006. We have collected 29 V and 43 R data points for this period; the BI light curves contain a few measurements only. The accuracy of our photometry is not better than 0.03 mag in the VR bands. The total amplitude of the variability obtained from our data is 2.06 mag in the V and 2.25 mag in the R band. 3C 345 showed periods of flaring activity during 1998/99 and 2001: a maximum of the blazar brightness was detected in 2001 February – 15.345 mag in the V and 14.944 mag in the R band. We confirm that during brighter stages 3C 345 becomes redder; for higher fluxes the colour index seems to be less dependent on the magnitude. The intra‐night monitoring of 3C 345 in three consecutive nights in 2001 August revealed no significant intra‐night variability; 3C 345 did not show evident flux changes over timescales of weeks around the period of the intra‐night monitoring. This result supports the existing facts that intra‐night variability is correlated with rapid flux changes rather than with specific flux levels. (© 2008 WILEY‐VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. Deep imaging was performed with the Subaru Telescope on Mauna Keacentered on the position of the KBO (24952) 1997 QJ4 on 2half-nights during October 2002. A deep search for evidence of a dustcoma was conducted which could be indicative of cometary activity downto a limit of mV = 31 mag arcsec-2. No coma was detected, and from this sensitive upper limits on dust production can be set at Q <0.01 kg s-1. Brightness variations consistent with rotationalmodulation were seen, implying a period of rotation longer than 4 hrs, with a range > 0.3 mag corresponding to a minimum projected axis ratioof 1:1.3. 相似文献

In support of the Deep Impact Mission, we have updated the secular light curve of 9P/Tempel 1 presented in Paper I [Ferrín, I., 2005. Icarus 178, 493-516], with new data sets. The secular light curves (SLC) of the comet are presented in the log and time plots (Figs. 1 and 2) and provide a clear profile of the overall shape of the envelope. We arrive at the following conclusions: (1) Improved values of 18 photometric parameters are derived including the turn on and turn off points, RON=−3.47±0.05 AU, ROFF=+4.20±0.05 AU, and TON=−410±25 d, TOFF=+555±25 d. (2) The improved SLC shows a most interesting and peculiar shape, with a linear power law of slope n=7.7±0.1 from RON=−3.47 AU to RBP=−2.08±0.05 AU, and then converts to a law with curvature. The break point of the power law at RBP=−2.08 AU, mV(1,R)=14.0±0.1 mag, is interpreted as a change in sublimating something more volatile than water ice (most probably CO2), to water ice sublimation. In other words, the comet's sublimation is controlled by two different substances. (3) The photometric-age (defined in Paper I) and the time-age of the comet [Ferrín, I., 2006. Icarus. In press] are recomputed, and results in a value P-AGE=21±2 and T-AGE=11±2 comet years. Thus 9P is a young comet. (4) The comet is active almost up to aphelion since the turn off point has been determined at ROFF=+4.20±0.05 AU while aphelion takes place at Q=+4.74 AU. (5) The comet exhibits activity post-aphelion which is not understood. Two hypothesis are advanced to explain this behavior. 相似文献

We present the secular light curves of eight comets listed in the title. Two plots per comet are needed to study these objects: a reduced magnitude (to Δ=1 AU = geocentric distance) vs time, and a reduced magnitude vs LogR (R=heliocentric distance). A total of over 16 new parameters, are measured from both plots, and give an unprecedented amount of information to characterize these objects: the onset of sublimation (RON), the offset of sublimation (ROFF), the time lag at perihelion (LAG), the absolute magnitude (m(1,1)), the maximum magnitude at perihelion (mMAX(1,LAG)), the nuclear magnitudes (VN), the amplitude of the secular light curve (ASEC), plus several others, and the photometric functions needed to describe the envelope. The most significant findings of this investigation are: (a) The envelope of the observations is the best representation of the secular light curve. (b) The H10 photometric system is unable to explain the curves and a new set of photometric rules and functions is used. (c) Only four comets exhibit power laws in their secular light curves, and only partially: 1P, 19P, 21P, and 81P. All others have to be described by more complex functions. Of the four, three exhibit a break of the power law, requiring two laws pre-perihelion and one post-perihelion. The reason for this behavior is not understood. (d) We predict the existence of a photometric anomaly in the secular light curve of 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko, evidenced by a region of diminished activity from −119 to −6 days before perihelion, that might be interpreted as a topographic effect or the turn off of an active region. (e) We define a photometric parameter (P-AGE) that attempts to measure the relative age of a comet through the activity exhibited in the secular light curve. 81P/Wild 2 (a comet that has recently entered the inner Solar System) is confirmed as a young object, while 28P/Neujmin 1 is confirmed as a very old comet. (f) Arranging the comets by P-AGE also classifies them by shape. A preliminary classification is achieved. (g) The old controversy of what is a nuclear magnitude is clearly resolved. 相似文献

The results of photometric observations of Centaur object Chiron carried out at the Observatório do Pico dos Dias (OPD, Brazil), the Estación Astrof?́sica de Bosque Alegre (EABA, Argentina), and Complejo Astronómico El Leoncito (CASLEO, Argentina) from 1997 to 2001 are presented here. The analysis of the photometric data shows that the brightness of Chiron reached a minimum value in 1999 and began increasing again in 2000. The absolute magnitude, HV, varied from 7.26 in June 1999 to 5.78 in April 2001. The data tend to indicate that Chiron is starting a new outburst of activity which is compatible with a sporadic cometary behavior not related to heliocentric distance. 相似文献

A radial velocity study is presented of the cataclysmic variable V378 Pegasi (PG 2337 + 300). It is found to have an orbital period of 0.13858 ± 0.00004 d (3.32592 ± 0.00096 h). Its spectrum and long-term light curve suggest that V378 Peg is a nova-like variable, with no outbursts. We use the approximate distance and position in the Galaxy of V378 Peg to estimate E(B − V) = 0.095, and use near-infrared magnitudes to calculate a distance of 680 ± 90 pc and MV = 4.68 ± 0.70, consistent with V378 Peg being a nova-like. Time-resolved photometry taken between 2001 and 2009 reveals a period of 0.1346 ± 0.0004 d (3.23 ± 0.01 h). We identify this photometric variability to be negative superhumps, from a precessing, tilted accretion disk. Our repeated measurements of the photometric period of V378 Peg are consistent with this period having been stable between 2001 and 2009, with its negative superhumps showing coherence over as many as hundreds or even thousands of cycles. 相似文献

A worldwide photometric investigation of the asteroid 324 Bamberga was conducted during the period September–November 1978. The full-cycle lightcurve shows two maxima and two minima with a maximum amplitude of 0.075 mag; the rotation period was found to be Psyn = 29.h42 ± 0.h01. A linear least-squares solution of the phase relation gives βy = (0.334 ± 0.001) mag/degree and V0 (1, 0) = (7.17 ± 0.01) mag. The color indices measured are B-V = 0.69, U-B=0.36, in agreement with the C taxonomic type given for 324 Bamberga. The very long period indicates 324 Bamberga is an unusual object among asteroids with diameters greater than 200 km. 相似文献
