We have used Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter data from 2007 and 2009 to compare summer behaviors of the seasonal and residual south polar caps of Mars in those two years. We find that the planet-encircling dust storm that occurred in the first of the two Mars years enhanced the loss of seasonal CO2 deposits relative to the second year but did not have a large effect on the continuing erosion of the pits and mesas within the residual cap materials. This suggests that the increase of bright frost in some regions of the residual cap observed between Mariner 9 and Viking can be accommodated within observed martian weather variability and does not require unknown processes or climate change.  相似文献

The south residual polar cap of Mars, rich in CO2 ice, is compositionally distinct from the north residual cap which is dominantly H2O ice. The south cap is also morphologically distinct, displaying a bewildering variety of depressions formed in thin layered deposits, which have been observed to change by scarp retreat over an interval of one Mars year (Malin et al., 2001, Science 294, 2146-2148). The climatically sensitive locale of the residual caps suggests that their behavior may help in the interpretation of recent fluctuations or repeatability of the Mars climate. We have used Mars Global Surveyor Mars Orbiter Camera (MOC) images obtained in three southern summers to map the variety of features in the south residual cap and to evaluate changes over two Mars years (Mars y). The images show that there are two distinct layered units which were deposited at different times separated by a period of degradation. The older unit, ∼10 m thick, has layers approximately 2 m thick. The younger unit has variable numbers of layers, each ∼1 m thick. The older unit is eroding by scarp retreat averaging 3.6 m/Mars y, a rate greater than the retreat of 2.2 m/Mars y observed for the younger unit. The rates of scarp retreat and sizes of the different types of depressions indicate that the history of the residual cap has been short periods of deposition interspersed with longer erosional periods. Erosion of the older unit probably occupied ∼100-150 Mars y. One layer may have been deposited after the Mariner 9 observations in 1972. Residual cap layers appear to differ from normal annual winter deposits by having a higher albedo and perhaps by having higher porosities. These properties might be produced by differences in the depositional meteorology that affect the fraction of high porosity snow included in the winter deposition.  相似文献

The Mariner 9 Ultraviolet Spectrometer has observed the 2550 Å ozone spectral absorption feature on Mars. This absorption was previously detected in the south polar region by Mariner 7 in 1969. Mariner 9 did not observe ozone at any time in the equatorial region, nor at the south polar cap during its summer season. However, ozone was found in the north polar region beginning at a latitude of 45°N and extending northward. Ozone later appeared in the southern hemisphere southward of 50°S as the Mars autumnal equinox approached. The presence of ozone on Mars seems to be coupled to the water vapor content of its atmosphere.  相似文献

A comparison of crater-related wind markers in the north and south polar (40–90° latitude) regions of Mars has been made on the basis of comprehensive mapping from Viking Orbiter and Mariner 9 Images. Wind streaks show that present wind activity is most effective in both north and south in the southern spring and summer. This asymmetry is consistent with the present asymmetry of climate. The more massive intracrater dune fields are also oriented with the presently strongest winds. This alignment may reflect a long-term asymmetry in the effectiveness of northern and southern spring flow because reorientation times far exceed the period of cycles of hemispherical climate asymmetry, ≈51, 000 years. Streaks originating from dark crater splotches indicate that windflow away from the south pole is effective over a larger latitude range than it is in the north. This difference may be partly responsible for the contrasting distribution of dune sand in the north and south polar regions.  相似文献

The paper contains the data on the thermal and physical characteristic of the surface regolith of the Martian satellite Phobos obtained from the spaceborne remote sensing (with the Mariner 9, Viking, and Mars Global Surveyor orbiters and the Phobos-2 spacecraft) and the results of the numerical modeling of the thermal regime in the surface regolith (on diurnal and seasonal scales) performed for the prospective landing site in the Lagado Planitia region located in the anti-Martian hemisphere of Phobos.  相似文献

During the Martian landings the descent engine plumes on Viking Lander 1 (VL-1) and Viking Lander 2 (VL-2) eroded the Martian surface materials. This had been anticipated and investigated both analytically and experimentally during the design phase of the Viking spacecraft. This paper presents data on erosion obtained during the tests of the Viking descent engine and the evidence for erosion by the descent engines of VL-1 and VL-2 on Mars. From these and other results, it is concluded that there are four distinct surface materials on Mars: (1) drift material, (2) crusty to cloddy material, (3) blocky material, and (4) rock.Work performed as part of NASA contract W 14,575.  相似文献

A refined technique is presented for deriving 9-μm extinction opacities of the Mars atmosphere from brightness temperature measurements made by the Viking Infrared Thermal Mapper. Improvements include modeling of the vertical temperature profile, a surface-atmosphere temperature discontinuity, and the effects of surface emissitivity and particle scattering. The routine is applied to the Mars Average Data Set to yield zonal mean opacities for more than one Mars year. The mean 9-μm opacity for one year is 0.5, yet the mode value is only 0.056, due to the very skewed distribution. Time histories of opacity at the Viking Lander 1 and 2 sites are generated and compared to in situ data. Opacity maps are presented for the period Ls 168–270 covering the 1977a dust storm; these show the genesis and spread of the storm with 10° Ls resolution.  相似文献

Remote observations of the atmospheric water vapour from the Mars orbit were usually carried out to study its global distribution and variability. Measurements of the water vapour abundance onboard the landers have recently become an important complement to the orbital sounding. Narrow-band filter photometry and spectroscopy of the solar radiation from the surface of the planet proved to be a powerful tool in the study of atmospheric water. The Imager for Mars Pathfinder (IMP) was the first instrument to measure its amount from the surface. The Surface Stereo Imager (SSI) onboard the Mars Polar Lander (MPL) was to follow but the spacecraft was lost at landing. Nevertheless significant expertise in the optical measurements of atmospheric H2O was gained during these missions. This paper summarizes this experience emphasizing the radiative transfer aspects of the problem. The results of this study could be of importance for future missions to Mars.  相似文献

Television pictures of the south polar regions of Mars obtained by the Mariner 6 and 7 spacecraft in 1969 are rectified to a standard mapping projection using computer image processing techniques. Mosaicking of these pictures produces the first photomap of the entire south polar cap.  相似文献

We have used data from the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter to study 30-80 m thick light-toned layered deposits on the plateaus adjacent to Valles Marineris at five locations: (1) south of Ius Chasma, (2) south of western Melas Chasma, (3) south of western Candor Chasma, (4) west of Juventae Chasma, and (5) west of Ganges Chasma. The beds within these deposits have unique variations in brightness, color, mineralogy, and erosional properties that are not typically observed in light-toned layered deposits within Valles Marineris or many other equatorial areas on Mars. Reflectance spectra indicate these deposits contain opaline silica and Fe-sulfates, consistent with low-temperature, acidic aqueous alteration of basaltic materials. We have found valley or channel systems associated with the layered deposits at all five locations, and the volcanic plains adjacent to Juventae, Ius, and Ganges exhibit inverted channels composed of light-toned beds. Valleys, channels, and light-toned layering along the walls of Juventae and Melas Chasmata are most likely coeval to the aqueous activity that affected the adjacent plateaus and indicate some hydrological activity occurred after formation of the chasmata. Although the source of water and sediment remains uncertain, the strong correlation between fluvial landforms and light-toned layered deposits argues for sustained precipitation, surface runoff, and fluvial deposition occurring during the Hesperian on the plateaus adjacent to Valles Marineris and along portions of chasmata walls.  相似文献

The Isidis Planitia region on Mars usually is regarded as a comparably attractive site for landing missions based on engineering constraints such as elevation and smooth regional topography. The Mars Express landed element Beagle 2 was deployed to this area, and the southern margin of the basin was selected as one of the backup landing sites for the NASA Mars Exploration Rovers.Especially in the context of the Beagle 2 mission, Isidis Planitia has been discussed as a place which might have experienced a volatile-rich history with associated potential for biological activity [e.g. Bridges et al., 2003. Selection of the landing site in Isidis Planitia of Mars Probe Beagle 2. J. Geophys. Res. 108(E1), 5001, doi: 10.1029/2001JE001820]. However the measurements of by the GRS instrument on Mars Odyssey indicate a maximum inferred water abundance of only 3 wt% in the upper few meters of the surface [Feldman et al., 2004. Global distribution of near-surface hydrogen on Mars. J. Geophys. Res. 109, E09006, doi: 10.1029/2003JE002160]. Based on these measurements this area seems to be one of the driest spots in the equatorial region of Mars.To support future landing site selections we took a more detailed look at the minimum burial depth of stable ice deposits in this area, focusing as an example on the planned Beagle 2 landing site. We are especially interested in the likelihood of ground ice deposits within the range of proposed subsurface sampling tools as drills or ‘mole’-like devices [Richter et al., 2002. Development and testing of subsurface sampling devices for the Beagle 2 Lander. Planet. Space Sci. 50, 903-913] given reasonable physical constraints for the surface and near surface material. For a mission like ExoMars [Kminek, G., Vago, J.L., 2005. The Aurora Exploration Program—The ExoMars Mission. In: Proceedings of the 35th Lunar and Planetary Science Conference, abstract no. 1111, 15-19 March 2004, League City, TX] with a focus on finding traces of fossil life the area might be of potential interest, because these traces would be better conserved in the dry soil. Modeling and measurement indicate that Isidis Planitia is indeed a dry place and any hypothetical ground ice deposits in this region are out of range of currently proposed sampling devices.  相似文献

It is uncertain whether the residual (perennial) south polar cap on Mars is a transitory or a permanent feature in the current Martian climate. While there is no firm evidence for complete disappearance of the cap in the past, clearly observable changes have been documented. Observations suggest that the perennial cap lost more CO2 material in the spring/summer season prior to the Mariner 9 mission than in those same seasons monitored by Viking and Mars Global Surveyor. In this paper we examine one process that may contribute to these changes—the radiative effects of a planet encircling dust storm that starts during late Martian southern spring on the stability of the perennial south polar cap. To approach this, we model the radiative transfer through a dusty planetary atmosphere bounded by a sublimating CO2 surface.A critical parameter for this modeling is the surface albedo spectrum from the near-UV to the thermal-IR, which was determined from both space-craft and Earth-based observations covering multiple wavelength regimes. Such a multi-wavelength approach is highly desirable since one spectral band by itself cannot tightly constrain the three-parameter space for polar surface albedo models, namely photon “scattering length” in the CO2 ice and the amounts of intermixed water and dust. Our results suggest that a planet-encircling dust storm with onset near solstice can affect the perennial cap's stability, leading to advanced sublimation in a “dusty” year. Since the total amount of solid CO2 removed by a single storm may be less than the total CO2 thickness, a series of dust storms would be required to remove the entire residual CO2 ice layer from the south perennial cap.  相似文献

Late in 1977, the periapsis altitude of the Viking Orbiters was lowered from 1500 to 300 km. The higher resolution of pictures taken at the lower altitude (8 m/pixel) permitted a more accurate determination of the location of the Viking 1 Lander by correlating topographic features seen in the new pictures with the same features in lander pictures. The position of the lander on Viking Orbiter picture 452B11 (NGF Rectilinear) is line 293, sample 1099. This location of the Viking 1 Lander has been used in a revision of the control net of Mars (M.E. Davies, F.Y. Katayama, and J.A. Roth, R2309 NASA, The Rand Corp., Feb. 1978). The new areographic coordinates of the lander are lat 22.483° N and long 47.968° W. The new location is estimated to be accurate to within 50 m.  相似文献

A Mars average data set (MADS) has been constructed from thermal and albedo measurements of the Viking Infrared Thermal Mapper; by merging information from all longitudes; and, ensuring reasonably complete longitudinal sampling, a representation of mean Mars behavior is obtained. Brightness temperatures at 7, 9, 11, 15, and 20 μm and albedo information in the band 0.3–3.0 μm have been binned using 2° latitude strips, 24 times of day, 3 emission angle intervals, and 23 nonoverlapping Ls periods covering 1.43 Mars years starting at Ls = 84°. The MADS is ideally suited to parametric study of latitudinal, diurnal, angular, and seasonal dependences. Data are presented for surface thermal and albedo behavior in clear and dusty atmospheric conditions; the thermal response of the atmospheric temperature to a major dust storm is found to be consistent with Mariner 9 data from the 1971 storm. Examples of use of the MADS, which is available through the Mars Consortium, indicate how averaged data reveal specific surface and atmospheric phenomena.  相似文献

Reevaluating the geologic history of the prior Mars landing sites provides important ground truth for recent and ongoing orbital missions. At the Viking 2 Lander (VL2) site, topographic measurements of relict landforms indicate that at least 100 m of sedimentary mantle material has been stripped away. The observed paucity of impact craters <100 m in diameter suggests that resurfacing processes (likely in the form of the recent deposition and removal of thin 1-10 m mantle layers) continue up to the present. A dearth of craters in the 100-500 m diameter range, however, also necessitates erosion of a thicker mantle layer. Partially inverted chains of secondary craters from nearby Mie Crater indicate that the mantle was already in place when the impact occurred. The density of craters superposed on Mie ejecta is consistent with a Late Hesperian age and provides a minimum age constraint for the mantle's emplacement. The thermophysical properties of the surface around VL2 as observed with Thermal Emission Imaging System (THEMIS) data indicate that the landing site occurs in an intracrater region that may typify mid to high northern latitude sites. Elevated thermal inertias of a pedestal crater superposed atop a larger pedestal crater suggest that rocky or indurated material can be created by impacts into sedimentary targets. Rock abundances at VL2 are consistent with the addition of impact-emplaced material from the missing small impact crater population documented in this study. Thus, the VL2 site may be a reasonable proxy for the landscape expected at the upcoming Phoenix Lander site.  相似文献

Dust devil data from Mars is limited by a lack of data relating to diurnal dust devil behaviour. Previous work looking at the Viking Lander meteorological data highlighted seasonal changes in temporal occurrence of dust devils and gave an indication of typical dust devil diameter, size, and internal dynamics. The meteorological data from Viking Lander 2 for sols 1 to 60 have been revisited to provide detailed diurnal dust devil statistics. Results of our analysis show that the Viking Lander 2 experienced a possible 38 convective vortices in the first 60 sols of its mission with a higher occurrence in the morning compared to Earth, possibly as a result of turbulence generated by the Lander body. Dust devil events have been categorised by statistical confidence and intensity. Some initial analysis and discussion of the results is also presented. Assuming a similar dust loading to the vortices seen by Mars Pathfinder, it is estimated that the amount of dust lofted in the locality of the Lander is approximately 800 ± 10 kgsol−1km−2.  相似文献

Of the four spacecraft that the Viking Project put into operation at Mars in the summer of 1976, one continues to acquire data periodically. The missions of the two orbiters were terminated by the depletion of their attitude-control gas: Orbiter 2 in July 1978 and Orbiter 1 in August 1980. Lander 2 was shut down in April 1980 because of degradation of its batteries. Lander 1 is programmed to continue acquiring a modest number of imaging, meteorology, and ranging data periodically until December 1994. During its final year Orbiter 1 continued to produce excellent data from its full complement of instruments—two cameras, two infrared instruments (thermal mapper and water vapor detector), and the radio subsystem. The major emphasis was on photography, with 10,000 images being acquired. These included two very large swaths of high-resolution contiguous coverage of the Martian surface and the completion of the moderate-resolution mapping of nearly the entire surface, as well as miscellaneous other observations. The majority of these images has not been processed and examined, but the others have revealed many previously unobserved features and have greatly enhanced the base for a geological understanding of the planet. The history of Viking mission operations is brought up to date.  相似文献
