The Laguna Madre has experienced a persistent bloom ofAureoumbra lagunensis for over eight years. The persistence of this bloom may be due in part to the often hypersaline conditions in Laguna Madre (40–60 psu) that favor the growth ofA. lagunensis. Above-normal rainfall in the fall of 1997 reduced the salinities in Baffin Bay from >40 to<20 psu.A. lagunensis cell densities dropped from>106 cells ml−1 in July 1997 to c. 200 cells ml−1 in January 1998. During this time of low brown tide density, phytoplankton biomass generally remained high and the Laguna Madre experienced successive blooms of diatoms (Rhizosolenia spp.) and cyanobacteria. Hypersaline conditions returned in 1998 and brown tide densities increased to>0.5 × 106 cells ml−1 by summer. The extraordinary persistence of the brown tide and the unusual sequence of intense blooms may be related in part to the reduction of zooplankton populations. Microzooplankton populations declined following the above-normal rain in the fall of 1997; populations did not recover until fall 1998. Copepod populations also declined sharply and remained low in Laguna Madre, but recovered by summer 1998 in Baffin Bay. Dilution experiments indicated that microzooplankton grazing and phytoplankton growth were usually balanced when measured during our cruises. The rapid recovery of theA. lagunensis bloom suggests that this alga may be a more resilient component of the Laguna Madre flora than previously suspected.  相似文献

The distribution of two classes of lipid biomarker compounds (fatty acids and sterols) was used in conjunction with several bulk parameters (total suspended solids, chlorophyll a, and particulate carbon and nitrogen concentrations) to examine spatial and temporal variability in the sources of particulate organic matter (POM) important to southern Chesapeake Bay. Based on these geochemical parameters, we found that suspended and sedimentary organic matter in the southern Chesapeake Bay is derived from autochthonous sources including a mixture of fresh and detrital phytoplankton, zooplankton, and bacteria. The dominant factor contributing to temporal variability during our study was phytoplankton productivity. Enrichments in particulate organic carbon, chlorophyll a, total fatty acids, total sterols, and a number of biomarkers specific to phytoplankton sources were found in particles collected from surface (1 m) and deep (1 m above the bottom) portions of the water column at several sites during the spring bloom in March 1996 and during a localized bloom in July 1995. Comparison of sites at the mouths of two tributaries (York and Rappahannock rivers) to southern Chesapeake Bay with two sites located in the bay mainsterm indicates spatial variation in the composition of POM was not significant in this region of the bay. The energetic nature of this region of the Chesapeake Bay most likely contributes to the observed homogeneity. Comparison with biomarker studies conducted in other estuaries suggests the high levels of productivity characteristic of the Chesapeake Bay contribute to high background levels of POM.  相似文献

Phytoplankton chlorophyll a concentration, biovolume, cell diameter, and species composition differed across the narrow, low salinity zone between 0.6‰ to 4‰ and may influence copepod food availability in the northern San Francisco Bay Estuary. The highest chlorophyll a concentrations (range 3.2–12.3 μg 1?1), widest cell diameters (>5 μm diam), highest diatom densities and highest production rates of >10 μm diam cells occurred at the landward edge of the salinity zone in April during a strong spring tide and May during a strong neap tide. Near optimum predator/prey ratios, large prey estimated spherical diameters, and high chlorophyll a concentrations suggest these phytoplankton communities provided good food quantity and quality for the most abundant copepods, Eurytemora affinis, Sinocalanus doerrii, and Pseudodiaptomus forbesi. At the center of the zone, chlorophyll a concentrations, diatom densities, and production rates of >10 μm diam cells were lower and cell diameters were smaller than upstream. Downstream transport was accompanied by accumulation of phytoplankton with depth and tide; maximum biomass occurred on spring tide. The lowest chlorophyll a concentrations (1.4–3.6 μg 1?) and consistently high densities (3,000–4,000 cells ml?1) of <5 μm diam cells occurred at the seaward edge of the zone, where the green alga Nannochloris spp. and the bluegreen alga Synechococcus spp. were the most abundant phytoplankton. Low chlorophyll a concentrations and production rates of >10 μm diam cells, small prey estimated spherical diameters, and high predator/prey ratios suggested the seaward edge of the zone had poor phytoplankton food for copepodids and adult copepods. The seaward decrease in phytoplankton chlorophyll a concentration and cell diameter and shift in species composition in the low salinity zone were probably a function of an estuary-wide decrease in chlorophyll a concentration, cell diameter, and diatom density since the early 1980s that was enhanced in the low salinity zone by clam herbivory after 1987. *** DIRECT SUPPORT *** A01BY090 00008  相似文献

This study was designed to establish the distributions of trace metals (Cd, Co, Cu, Ni, Pb, and Zn), dissolved organic carbon (DOC), and inorganic nutrients (PO4 and H4SiO4) in the water column of the small, relatively pristine Peconic River estuary. We were also able to examine the effects of a harmful microalgal bloom, known as the brown tide, which occurred in the area during our study. Because river inflow to the Peconic estuary is restricted by a small dam at the head of the estuary, direct evaluation of the relative importance of riverine inputs on estuarine metal distributions was possible. The simultaneous analyses of geochemical carrier metals (Al, Fe, and Mn), an indicator of sewage (Ag), and other ancillary parameters (e.g., suspended particulate matter, dissolved O2, chlorophylla) were used to describe the major processes controlling metal concentrations in the dissolved phase. The trace metal distributions indicated two distinct biogeochemical regimes within the estuary: an anthropogenically perturbed region with high metal levels (e.g., Ag, 165 pM; Cu, 51 nM; Zn, 57 nM) at the head (Flanders Bay), and a larger outer region with relatively low metal concentrations. The very similar distributions of some metals (e.g., Mn, Ni) in the Peconic estuary compared to those in estuaries having much higher river flow demonstrated the dominant role of internal processes (e.g., diagenetic remobilization) in controlling these metal patterns. An inverse relationship between dissolved Fe and DOC with cell counts of the brown tide microalgaeAureococcus anophagefferens in our field study suggested a close association with the bloom, although a similar relationship was observed between dissolved Al and brown tide cell counts, implying that removal of Fe could be due to particle scavenging rather than biological uptake.  相似文献

Aureococcus anophagefferens, the pelagophyte responsible for brown tide blooms, occurs in coastal bays along the northeast coast of the United States. This species was identified in Chincoteague Bay, Maryland, in 1997 and has bloomed there since at least 1998. Time series of dissolved organic matter (DOM) concentrations and characteristics are presented for two sites in Chincoteague Bay: one that experienced a brown tide bloom in 2002 and one that did not. Characteristics of the bulk DOM pool were obtained using dissolved organic carbon (DOC) and ultraviolet-visible (UV-Vis) measurements (spectral slope and specific UV absorbance). High molecular weight DOM (HMW-DOM) was characterized in terms of DOC concentration, carbon: nitrogen (C:N) ratio, isotopic signature, and molecular-level characteristics as determined by direct temperature resolved mass spectrometry (DT-MS). Compositional changes in the DOM pool are associated with brown tide blooms, although a direct relationship between DOM characteristics and bloom development could not be confirmed. DOC measurements suggest that during the brown tide bloom, HMW-DOM was released into the surface water. UV-Vis analysis on the bulk DOM and molecular-level characterization of the HMW-DOM using DT-MS show that this material was optically active and more aromatic in nature. Based upon C:N ratio and HMW-DOC measurements, it appears that this HMW-DOM was more nitrogen enriched. Whether this material was released as exudates or was due to lysis ofA. anophagefferens could not be determined.  相似文献

This paper describes the results of 10 years of water quality monitoring in the Indian River Lagoon Florida, with special emphasis on the relationships between trends in climatic conditions and the distribution, composition, and abundance of the phytoplankton community. The Indian River Lagoon, which spans 220 km of Florida’s east coast, is a region of particular concern because of the rapid rate of human development throughout the region and the hydrologically restricted character of the lagoon, which heightens the potential for algal bloom. Water sampling was carried out on a monthly to twice-monthly basis at six sites located in the northern and central lagoon. The 10-year study included both extended periods of below and above average rainfall. A number of ecologically distinct regions exist within the lagoon, which differ considerably in water exchange properties and watershed inputs. The northern lagoon is characterized by longer water residence times, lower phosphorus concentrations, higher nitrogen concentrations, and more stable salinity conditions than the central lagoon. Mean phytoplankton biovolumes were substantially higher at the sites in the northern lagoon than at the sites in the central lagoon, and algal blooms were more common and intense in the former region. Inter-annual patterns of phytoplankton biovolume were also different in the northern and central lagoon. In the northern lagoon, phytoplankton biovolumes were lowest during the drought period, from the autumn of 1998 to the spring of 2001. By contrast, algal bloom events in the central lagoon were not only less frequent but were not tied to periods of high rainfall. The most widespread and common bloom formers were the potentially toxic dinoflagellate Pyrodinium bahamense var. bahamense and two centric diatoms, Dactyliosolen fragilissimus and Cerataulina pelagica. Many of the biovolume peaks observed over the study period were attributable to these three species. The results of time series modeling of phytoplankton dynamics further highlighted the disparities between the two regions of the lagoon in terms of the suite of parameters that best predict the observed trends in the biomass of phytoplankton. Overall, the outcome of this initial modeling effort in the Indian River Lagoon suggests that time series approaches can help define the factors that influence phytoplankton dynamics.  相似文献

A rhodamine dye tracer study was conducted over eight tidal cycles to investigate mixing and tidal exchange processes in Perch Pond, a Cape Cod embayment subject to recurrent blooms of the toxic dinoflagellate, Gonyaulax tamarensis. Dye injected at the inlet to Perch Pond during flood tide became well-mixed within the pond in one day and was removed at an effective first order rate of 0.36 d?1, equivalent to a 70% utilization of the maximum possible tidal exchange. This relatively high flushing efficiency can be attributed to a density-driven circulation within the pond, consisting of a subsurface inflow of high salinity dense water on the flood tide followed by removal of lighter surface layers through the shallow inlet during ebb tide. The formation of a frontal convergence near the inlet on flood tide is consistent with the observed distribution of G. tamarensis cysts and shelifish toxicity. It is also clear that phytoplankton like G. tamarensis, whose maximum growth rates approximate the rate of tidal flushing, can only bloom within the embayment by avoiding the outflowing surface waters. Mixing within the pond is probably less efficient and population losses greater during dry periods when the pond salinity is higher and the stratification weaker.  相似文献

Leucine and thymidine incorporation were examined in size-fractionated estuarine communities and in cultures of phytoplankton known to use dissolved organic nitrogen (DON). Cultured phytoplankton species were used to establish that phytoplankton took up leucine and thymidine into protein and DNA, respectively. Subsequently, incorporation of leucine and thymidine was measured in size-fractionated populations collected from the Lafayette River, VA, a eutrophic estuary where resident populations contain bloom-forming phytoplankton known to take up DON, and the Gulf of Mexico during a bloom of the mixotrophic red tide dinoflagellate, Karenia brevis. We examined the efficacy of size fractionation for determining phytoplankton versus bacterial incorporation of leucine and thymidine under conditions employed during bacterial productivity bioassays, and antibiotics were used to distinguish between bacterial and phytoplankton incorporation in cultured and natural populations. Results suggest that cultures and natural assemblages of phytoplankton can take up both leucine and thymidine when supplied at low concentrations (10 and 12 nmol L−1, respectively) and during short incubations (15 min to 1 h). In natural populations, up to 95% of the leucine and thymidine incorporation during short bioassays was recovered in the >5.0-μm size fraction that contained ≤4.2% of the bacterial biomass.  相似文献

The carbon dynamics of six estuarine ponds at Morehead City, North Carolina, were measured from August 1969 through August 1970. Three waste ponds received secondary treated sewage effluent and three served as controls. Total organic levels were determined by combustion with a Beckman total carbon analyzer. Inorganic levels were calculated from temperature, pH, and carbonate alkalinity. Carbon dioxide diffusion across the air-water interface was measured with a floating plastic dome and an infrared gas analyzer. Carbon metabolism was determined from diurnal changes in total inorganic carbon. From October through April the wastereceiving ponds were characterized by an intense bloom of a small alga,Monodus guttula. During the bloom organic levels reached 75 mg C per 1. The warmer months were characterized by a more diverse flora and organic concentrations averaging 25 mg per 1. Organic levels in the control ponds seldom were greater than 10 mg per 1. CO2 diffused constantly out of the control ponds due to input of high alkalinity water supersaturated with inorganic carbon. During the bloom in the waste ponds diffusion of CO2 from the atmosphere was as high as 0.5 g C per m2 per day. CO2 diffused into the water constantly because the high uptake rate of inorganic carbon by the small algae reduced the levels in the water to less than 5 mg per 1. Gross production of the waste receiving ponds avearaged 2,86 g C per m2 per day during the bloom and 2.44 during the non-bloom period. The average productivity of the control ponds was 1.7. Corrections for CO2 diffusion were significant in the control ponds and in the waste ponds during theMonodus bloom. Availability of carbon from diffusion and respiratory regeneration seemed to limit phytoplankton productivity during the bloom. The annual budgets for the two sets of ponds were distinctly different. For the control ponds, the input of organic matter was nearly equal to losses indicating almost no net production of organic material. A high net loss of organic material and a net gain of inorganic carbon for the waste ponds reflected the net productive nature.  相似文献

Accelerating eutrophication manifest as increasing frequency and magnitude of phytoplankton blooms threatens living resources in many estuaries. Effects of large blooms can be difficult to document because blooms are often unexpected and do not always coincide with scheduled sampling programs. Here we use continuously monitored salinity distributions and optical properties to study the spring bloom of the red tide dinoflagellate,Prorocentrumminimum, in the Rhode River, Maryland, a tributary embayment of upper Chesapeake Bay. Salinity distributions, together with weekly cruise measurements of nutrient concentrations, indicate that the bloom commenced with an influx of nitrate at the mouth due to the arrival of a freshet from the Susquehanna River. Arrival of this freshet at the mouth set up an unstable, inverse salinity gradient within the Rhode River. Continuously monitored absorption and scattering spectra indicated that increases in chlorophyll within the Rhode River initially were due to the influx of chlorophyll that had developed in the main stem of the bay. After the influx, much higher concentrations and steep spatial gradients developed within the Rhode River, subsequent to reduced mixing that accompanied re-establishment of a normal estuarine salinity gradient. We used the monitored absorption and scattering coefficients to determine the effect of the bloom on light attenuation coefficients in the Rhode River. The bloom resulted in a nearly three-fold increase in attenuation coefficient. Attenuation was dominated by chlorophyll in the early stages of the bloom and by detritus after the termination of the bloom. Although the bloom lasted only 20 d, the elevated attenuation coefficients due to the bloom exceeded values that would permit growth of submersed vascular plants for a period of about 45 d.  相似文献

The Laguna Madre of South Texas is a shallow coastal lagoon whose dominant primary producers shifted from seagrasses to phytoplankton with the onset of the Texas brown tide, which persisted from 1990 through 1997. Acartia tonsa is the dominant component of the mesozooplankton and forms an important link in both the phytoplankton and detritus-based pelagic food webs. Stable carbon isotope ratios of A. tonsa, as well as the two major primary producers: phytoplankton (as particulate organic carbon) and seagrasses, were measured from March 1989 to October 1991. Zooplankton samples were collected at four locations in the Laguna Madre: two in shallow water (c. 1 m) over seagrass beds and two in slightly deeper water (c. 2–3 m) over a muddy bottom in a secondary bay without seagrasses. We found seasonal trends in the isotopic composition of A. tonsa collected within both habitats as well as distinct differences between the average {ie995-1} values of individuals collected in the two regions. Isotopic ratios of animals collected during the summer months were generally 4–8‰ enriched in 13C compared with those collected in the winter, at all stations. A. tonsa collected over seagrass beds were 2–5‰ more enriched in 13C than those collected over muddy bottoms. These observations suggest carbon derived from seagrasses can be an important source of nutrition for these copepods in summer, especially for copepods living over seagrass beds. The effects of the persistent brown tide decreased the contribution of seagrasses as a carbon source for A. tonsa during the summer of 1991. The pathway by which seagrass carbon enters the diet of A. tonsa is unclear, but the two pathways considered most likely are through copepods feeding on microzooplankton that have fed on bacteria nourished on seagrass carbon, or by copepods feeding directly on particles of seagrass detritus.  相似文献

We treat the ocean carbon cycle as a coupled physical-biogeochemical process. The interactions between mixed-layer dynamics and growth of phytoplankton in the layer are discussed, and the formal relationship between phytoplankton accumulation and new production is examined. A coupled biological-physical model is presented for studying the classical spring bloom in the N. Atlantic, and possible differences in the mechanisms that drive the seasonal phytoplankton blooms in the N. Atlantic and the Arabian Sea are discussed. Finally, recommendations are made for observational programs to improve our understanding of the biologically-mediated carbon cycle in the Arabian Sea.  相似文献

Isolation and chemical elucidation of dissolved and particulate polysaccharides in seawater were conducted. The water samples were collected in Mikawa Bay, Japan during a red tide bloom of the dinoflagellate, Prorocentrum minimum.Dissolved polysaccharides were concentrated from 5–101 of seawater with dialysis followed by separation by gel flitration, and isolation by ethanol precipitation. A heteropolysaccharide consisting of glucose, galactose, mannose, xylose, arabinose, fucose and rhamnose and a glucan were isolated from the polysaccharide component having a molecular weight more than 4,000 Dalton and were characterized by several chemical analyses. The heteropolysaccharide is a mucilaginous polysaccharide having a highly branched structure and a molecular weight of 104?5 × 106 Daltons and probably contains a sulfate half ester: the glucan is a polysaccharide with β-1,3- and 1,6-linkages (chrysolaminaran type). Concentrations of these were respectively ca. 20 and 67 μg l?1 at 1 m, and 2 and 26 μg l?1 at 6 m.A similar heteropolysaccharide was found in the boiling water extract of the particulate matter, while β-glucan was isolated in a much less purified form than the seawater β-glucan. In addition, a large amount of β-1,4 glucan was found in the strong alkali extract of the particulate matter, indicating that this glucan must be a cell wall polysaccharide derived from phytoplankton. These results strongly suggest that the heteropolysaccharide and chrysolaminaran type polysaccharide dissolved in seawater were derived from water soluble carbohydrates of phytoplankton through extracellular release or cell lysis.  相似文献

Suspended macrodetritus (>600 μm) from extensiveSpartina alterniflora marshes is widespread in the Cumberland Basin region of the macrotidal upper Bay of Fundy. The average concentration is about 5 mg C per m3 and most is found in the lower two-thirds of the water column. The total amount in the Basin at high tide is approximately 8 metric tonnes of organic carbon which is less than 1% of the annual net aerial primary production of the fringingS. alterniflora marshes. The high visibility ofSpartina detritus in Cumberland Basin is caused by the extreme tides (average tidal range about 11 m) which export marsh vegetation and distribute it widely about the estuary, and by the pronounced turbidity which has been shown to limit phytoplankton growth.  相似文献

The abundances and distributions of chlorophyll a and its common transformation products have been profiled by high performance liquid chromatography during the disruption, re-establishment, growth and senescence of a phytoplankton bloom in the Celtic Sea during April 2002. Transformation products of chlorophyll a indicative of herbivory of the phytoplankton bloom have been identified using atmospheric pressure chemical ionisation liquid chromatography-multistage mass spectrometry and chlorophyll oxidation products, formed by autoxidation, are present in increasing abundance in samples collected during the later stages of bloom development. The formation of oxidation products during the earliest stages in the chlorophyll transformation pathway identifies water column processes as sources of these early intermediates in the formation of geologic aetioporphyrins and/or cycloalkanoporphyrins.  相似文献

Copper and arsenic underwent large changes in chemical form during the development and senescence of natural phytoplankton blooms in the Patuxent River, a subestuary of Chesapeake Bay in Maryland. Arsenate was rapidly reduced to arsenite and methylated species. At a total arsenic concentration of 20 nmol l?1, arsenate reduction rates ranged from 50 amol cell?1 d?1 to >230 amol cell?1 d?1, with the rate and extent of reduction dependent upon the concentration of arsenic, the dominant phytoplankton present, the season, and the degree of decline in phosphorus concentrations during bloom development. In general, the percentage of organically-associated copper was lowest (20–40% of total copper) during periods of rapid cell growth and highest (60–100% of total copper) during periods of cell decline or periods of dominance by red tide-forming dinoflagellates, a pattern associated with periods of high release of organic compounds during either bloom senescence or dense algal blooms. The end result of biological mediation was to increase the proportion of each element present in a less toxic form, thus affecting the potential toxicity to a natural ecosystem.  相似文献

Blooms of the brown tide organismAureccoccus anophagefferens have recurred in the coastal bays in New Jersey since 1995 and in the coastal bays of Long Island since 1985. Intracellular viral-like particles (VLPs) were documented during 1999–2000 brown tide blooms in Little Egg Harbor, New Jersey, but it was not determined whether cells were infected during the termination of the bloom. The objective of this study was to determine if VLPs infected and lysed natural populations ofA. anophagefferens in coastal bays of New Jersey and New York in 2002 with the same frequency as in 1999–2000 and especially at the termination of the bloom. Our results confirmed that the highest percentage (37.5%) of VLP-infected cells occurred at the termination of the brown tide bloom in New Jersey in 2002. Intracellular VLPs were present throughout the bloom event. The percentage of visibly infected cells was higher at the beginning of the bloom than during the peak of the bloom. The intracellular VLPs in natural populations ofA. anophagefferens were consistent in size and shape (approximately 140 nm in diameter) and comparable to those in previous studies. Concentrated viral isolates, prepared from waters during brown tide blooms in New York and New Jersey in 2002, infected healthy laboratoryA. anophagefferens cultures in vitro. The viral isolates associated with the highest laboratory viral activity (lysis positive) were concentrated from water samples having the highest viral and bacteria concentrations. The intracellular viruses in these virally infected laboratory cultures ofA. anophagefferens were similar in size and shape to those found in natural populations. The successful isolation of a virus specific toA. anophagefferens from a brown tide bloom in the field, the similarity of ultrastructure of VLPs infecting both natural populations and laboratory infected cultures, and the pattern of VLP infection during bloom activity in combination with the observed high percentage of VLP-infected cells during bloom termination, supports, the hypothesis that viruses may be a major source of mortality for brown tide blooms in regional coastal bays of New Jersey and New York.  相似文献

This work presents the first data on the occurrence of the invasive, potentially toxic dinoflagellate Gonyaulax polygramma in the composition of plankton phytocenoses in the Caspian Sea. It was revealed that G. polygramma plays the key role in the quantitative characteristics of summer plankton phytocenoses and its bloom during the summer seasons of 2010 and 2013 was comparable in biomass (15–16 g/m3) to a “red tide.” In addition, the correlation between the G. polygramma bloom and the wind upwelling system in the eastern mid-Caspian region was established. For the first time, it is suggested that “bloom” of G. polygramma can also occur in deep-water halistatic areas (Derbent depression), remote from the upwelling system.  相似文献

The Mattaponi River is part of the York River estuary in Chesapeake Bay. Our objective was to identify the organic matter (OM) sources fueling the lower food web in the tidal freshwater and oligohaline portions of the Mattaponi using the stable isotopes of carbon (C) and nitrogen (N). Over 3 years (2002–2004), we measured zooplankton densities and C and N stable isotope ratios during the spring zooplankton bloom. The river was characterized by a May–June zooplankton bloom numerically dominated by the calanoid copepod Eurytemora affinis and cladocera Bosmina freyi. Cluster analysis of the stable isotope data identified four distinct signatures within the lower food web: freshwater riverine, brackish water, benthic, and terrestrial. The stable isotope signatures of pelagic zooplankton, including E. affinis and B. freyi, were consistent with reliance on a mix of autochthonous and allochthonous OM, including OM derived from vascular plants and humic-rich sediments, whereas macroinvertebrates consistently utilized allochthonous OM. Based on a dual-isotope mixing model, reliance on autochthonous OM by pelagic zooplankton ranged from 20% to 95% of production, declining exponentially with increasing river discharge. The results imply that discharge plays an important role in regulating the energy sources utilized by pelagic zooplankton in the upper estuary. We hypothesize that this is so because during high discharge, particulate organic C loading to the upper estuary increased and phytoplankton biomass decreased, thereby decreasing phytoplankton availability to the food web.  相似文献
