This paper forms the first part of a revision of the ammonite faunas of the Cenomanian stratotype in the environs of Le Mans, Sarthe, France. The history of research on ammonites in the area is briefly noted, as is the lithostratigraphy. The systematics of the heteromorph ammonites (Ancyloceratina) is described, and the following taxa documented: Hamites simplex d'Orbigny, Sciponoceras baculoides (Mantell), Sciponoceras gracile (Shumard), Anisoceras plicatile (J. Sowerby), A. aff. plicatile, Idiohamites alternatus vectensis Spath, I. ellipticus radiatus Spath, Hypoturrilites gravesianus (d'Orbigny), H. tuberculatus (Bosc), H. mantelli (Sharpe), H. sp., Neostlingoceras carcitanense (Matheron), N. aff. carcitanense, Turrilites costatus Lamarck, T. acutus Passy, T. scheuchzerianus (Bosc), T. boerssumensis Schlüter, Mariella dorsetensis (Spath), M. cenomanensis (Schlüter), M. group of cenomanensis (Schlüter)-lewesiensis (Spath), M. spp., M. (Plesioturrilites) sp., Scaphites equalis J. Sowerby, S. obliquus J. Sowerby, S.(?) sp., and S. sp. juv. 相似文献

From the Upper Bathonian up to the Tithonian–Berriasian, six main faunas and twelve basic faunal assemblages within them are distinguished in Nepal. The successive faunas show (1) low taxonomic diversity and (2) the dominance of a small number of genera and the subordinate place of the associated taxa. The assemblages include: (1) strictly Tethyan (e.g., Mediterranean or European Tethyan) species and/or genera, very few in number and occurring as isolated individuals or discontinuous faunal horizons; (2) Indo-Malagasian components, some scattered, others with a wide occurrence in the SW Pacific, some as far as Antarctica and/or Patagonia; (3) indigenous genera endemic for the Himalayas and the SW Pacific region. Faunas of the same age for the Sula Islands, Papua-New Guinea, Australia, New Zealand, Antarctica and South America are also considered. In spite of common components, the Himalayan faunas contrast with the relatively higher diversity of the Indo-Malagasian faunas. Low diversity and dominance of indigenous genera mean that the faunas extending from the Himalayas to Antarctica and Patagonia represent an actual biogeographical unit, the Indo Pacific (faunas and) Realm.Indo Pacific and Tethyan faunas show a less marked contrast than the Tethyan and Boreal. Transitional or mixed faunas of subaustral type developed in the Indo-Malagasian and Andean regions. This is explained by the absence of a geographical trap comparable to the land-locked palaeogeography of the Arctic Basin. The palaeogeography of the Arctic amplified the role of the other environmental factors. Among these the high latitude seasonal effects are likely to have resulted in environmental instability, controlling trophic resources and therefore the structure of the ecosystems, for instance low diversity and high density of the high latitude ammonite faunas. 相似文献

Three species of a canaliculated rudist Caprinula d'Orbigny, 1847, C. sharpei (Choffat, 1885), C. cedrorum (Blanckenhorn, 1890) and C. cf. boissyi d'Orbigny, 1840 and a radiolitid Sauvagesia sharpei (Bayle, 1857) are described from the Hummar Formation (upper Cenomanian) in NW Jordan, in the vicinity of Ajlun. Caprinula sharpei, C. cedrorum and S. sharpei are described for the first time from Jordan. Many specimens of S. sharpei are characterized by the presence of cavities flanking the lamellar myophores in the left valve and the apparence of the dorsal cavity and teeth/socket system moulds in the inner part of the outer shell layer of the right valve. A hiatus (or erosional unconformity) between Hummar Formation and upper Turonian Wadi As Sir Limestone Formation is suggested by the presence of karstic structures, reworked limestone clasts, and rudist fragments and a sharp boundary. Early diagenetic processes such as dissolution and silicification present in the loose rudist material is described. 相似文献

A detailed study of the lithologies of each of the beds present in the Osmington Oolite Formation of south Dorset is used to allocate numerous loose-collected ammonites to their correct stratigraphic horizons. Much new material has been collected by the author in addition to the limited amount of material available in museum collections. The age of the faunas of the three constituent members of the Osmington Oolite Formation is each assessed and placed into the context of Middle Oxfordian ammonite sequences elsewhere in England and in Europe. 相似文献

A new ichthyofauna from southeastern Morocco, comprising five forms, is briefly discussed. The faunal composition differs from the Early Cenomanian Kem Kem and Early Turonian Goulmima assemblages, but is close to that from Jebel Tselfat. We propose a Late Cenomanian age for the new fauna and that from Jebel Tselfat. The evolution of these fish assemblages shows the Moroccan fish faunas to have been related to those from South America until at least the Early Turonian. Central Tethyan influence on faunas seems to have been restricted to a short period of time during the beginning of the Late Cenomanian transgressive phase. 相似文献

In the Middle East and Africa, the Cenomanian ammonite genus Neolobites occurs, partly in great abundance, in shallow marine shelf settings. The genus includes several species but it has remained uncertain to what extent these species reflect biospecies, chronospecies or morphological variants. Based on material from Jordan and Egypt, the morphological variation of Neolobites vibrayeanus is described and discussed. From the several species of Neolobites described in the literature, only N. vibrayeanus, N. fourtaui and N. peroni appear to deserve specific separation. Sedimentological and lithological data, notably the common occurrence in strata that were possibly deposited above storm wave base, suggest that Neolobites was able to inhabit shallow marine settings. In these settings, it seems to form a distinct assemblage with the nautiloid Angulithes. Although N. vibrayeanus shows morphological variability between distinct populations, local N. vibrayeanus assemblages seem to develop morphologically stable populations that show only a little morphological overlap with those of other areas. This may be the reason for the earlier taxonomic splitting. The occurrence in habitats in which other stratigraphically significant ammonites are often missing may be the reason for the previous poor dating of Neolobites assemblages. 相似文献

We describe a small ilium, with fibrous texture characteristic of juvenile bone, from the lower Cenomanian of central Utah, U.S.A. The ilium was recovered from the upper part of the Mussentuchit Member of the Cedar Mountain Formation. The ilium most closely resembles that of immature ceratopsid ilia referred to Agujaceratops mariscalensis from the Campanian Aguja Formation of southern Texas, U.S.A. Both have everted dorsal margins over the iliac body, subhorizontal postacetabular processes, and laterally compressed, anteroventrally curved preacetabular processes. If correctly identified, the small ilium from the Cedar Mountain Formation is the oldest ceratopsid or ceratopsoid known, and shows that the diversity of early ceratopsians was greater than previously realized. 相似文献

The common or similar elements of faunas shared by the Early Cambrian Chengjiang fauna and the Middle Cambrian Burgess Shale fauna are listed in a generic level so as to have a better understanding of the palaeogeographic relationship between the South China Block and Laurentia. The Burgess Shale-type faunas probably had a worldwide distribution during the interval ranging from the Late Tommotian to Atdabanian. The geographic and biological contributions to the cosmopolitan geographic distribution of the Burgess Shale-type faunas are discussed. However, newly developed pelagic larvae in many phyla, which probably acquired their first bloom in the Cambrian, might have promoted the dispersal. 相似文献

Timing of the Nihewan formation and faunas 总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
Magnetostratigraphic dating of the fluvio-lacustrine sequence in the Nihewan Basin, North China, has permitted the precise timing of the basin infilling and associated Nihewan mammalian faunas. The combined evidence of new paleomagnetic findings from the Hongya and Huabaogou sections of the eastern Nihewan Basin and previously published magnetochronological data suggests that the Nihewan Formation records the tectono-sedimentary processes of the Plio-Pleistocene Nihewan Basin and that the Nihewan faunas can be placed between the Matuyama-Brunhes geomagnetic reversal and the onset of the Olduvai subchron (0.78-1.95 Ma). The onset and termination of the basin deposition occurred just prior to the Gauss-Matuyama geomagnetic reversal and during the period from the last interglaciation to the late last glaciation, respectively, suggesting that the Nihewan Formation is of Late Pliocene to late Pleistocene age. The Nihewan faunas, comprising a series of mammalian faunas (such as Maliang, Donggutuo, Xiaochangliang, Banshan, Majuangou, Huabaogou, Xiashagou, Danangou and Dongyaozitou), are suggested to span a time range of about 0.8-2.0 Ma. The combination of our new and previously published magnetostratigraphy has significantly refined the chronology of the terrestrial Nihewan Formation and faunas. 相似文献

The Lower Old Red Sandstone terranes of the Midland Valley of Scotland and the Anglo-Welsh Basin have been considered as separate realms due to the rarity of fish species common to both areas. Although in the first half of the 19th century the osteostracan Cephalaspis lyelli was thought to occur in both terranes this was shown in be incorrect in the latter part of that century. It was not until 1968 that it was demonstrated that the thelodont agnathan Turinia pagei occurred in both terranes. This species has a much wider distribution across the whole of the Old Red Sandstone continent, but its presence in both realms indicates they were connected either directly or indirectly. In 2012 it was suggested that the osteostracan Janaspis watsoni might be present in both basins and in 2013 the acanthodian Parexus recurvus was shown to definitely occur in both. Here we show that other acanthodian genera and species were present in both regions during the Lochkovian (earliest Devonian). Co-specific plants also occur in both terranes during the Lochkovian. As there is no evidence of a marine connection to the Midland Valley in the Lochkovian, the only logical conclusion is that the connection between the two terranes was fluvial. 相似文献

The impact of the Frasnian-Famennian biotic mass extinction event (F-F event) on radiolarian faunas is examined in 13 sections, which belong to two types of cherty basin in South China. No appreciable decrease in radiolarian biodiversity is observed across the F-F boundary. Indeed, radiolarian faunas flourished during the Famennian. The F-F event may not have had any dramatic effect on the radiolarian faunas in deep water and the disappearance of Famennian radiolarians in shallow water platform sections may simply be a result of sea level change rather than any biotic crisis. 相似文献

A new pterosaur, Microtuban altivolans gen. et sp. nov., is described from the Sannine Formation of northern Lebanon. The specimen is the first pterosaur from the Early Cenomanian (Late Cretaceous) locality of Hjoûla and is regarded as the most complete pterosaur fossil discovered from Africa. While postcranial characters indicate a possible relationship with members of the Thalassodromidae or Chaoyangopteridae, the specimen possesses an exceptionally short wing-finger phalanx 4, forming only 1.1% of the total length of the wing-finger. Its appearance along with an unnamed ornithocheiroid from the slightly younger locality of Hâqel suggests that a number of pterosaur taxa existed within the local area, perhaps living on exposed carbonate platforms.

The lower Callovian succession observable in cliffs of Anabar Bay and Bolshoi Begichev Island is described with consideration
of zonal subdivisions and beds with ammonites. The unified summary biozonation suggested for North Siberia includes the Cadoceras
elatmae Zone with C. frearsi and C. elatmae (instead former C. anabarense) subzones, subsequent C. tschernyschewi and C. tolype
zones, and successive C. cf. sublaeve, Rondiceras milaschevici, and Cadoceras ex gr. durum (formerly part of the middle Callovian)
beds. As in Siberia and East Europe there are species in common C. elatmae (Nik.), C. frearsi (Orb.), C. tolype Buck., and C. emelianzevi Vor.; certain ammonite zones of Siberian succession are directly correlated with the East European, East Greenland and standard
zonations. It is concluded that the lower Callovian is completely represented in Siberia. The lower part of the interval,
formerly attributed to the middle Callovian, represents the upper part of the lower Callovian Substage. Zones established
in the lower Callovian succession of Siberia are contiguous, whereas equivalents of the Elatmae Subzone and Tschernyschewi
Zone have not been distinguished in sections of East Greenland. Evolutionary trends of species in subfamily Cadoceratinae
are preliminary discussed. 相似文献

A newly discovered ammonite of the genus Hyperlioceras from the Lincolnshire Limestone Formation of Eastern England enables the biostratigraphical position of the principal building stone of Lincoln Cathedral: the ‘Silver Bed’ variant of Lincoln Stone (Lower Lincolnshire Limestone) to be precisely dated as subsectum biohorizon of the Lower Bajocian, Discites Zone. Ammonites are extremely rare in this formation thus the impetus to record it here and provide a firm date for strata in which it occurred following its discovery. The lithostratigraphical provenance of the specimen is briefly discussed and evidence provided to support the conclusion. 相似文献

A new amber deposit from the Cretaceous (uppermost Albian-lowermost Cenomanian) of southwestern France 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1

A Cretaceous amber deposit has recently been discovered in a quarry of Charente-Maritime (southwestern France), at Cadeuil. This paper presents the sedimentary and palaeoenvironmental settings of the uppermost Albian-lowermost Cenomanian series including the amber deposit. A preliminary analysis of the amber samples reveals diverse fossil arthropods (a few mites and at least 20 insect families within 9 orders), as well as numerous micro-organisms, mainly algae and mycelia. A myceloid colony of bacteria, a flagellate algae and four especially well preserved insects are illustrated (Diptera Dolichopodidae, Diptera Chironomidae, Hymenoptera Parasitica, and Heteroptera Tingidae). The abundance of the limnic micro-organisms is discussed in terms of bloom events. Their relative scarcity in almost all the amber pieces containing fossil arthropods is attributed to differences in the origin of resin: production along trunk and branches for amber with arthropods; production by aquatic roots for amber rich in algae. The absence of pollen and spores in amber is attributed to differences in the respective periods of resin and palynomorph production, which may be related to a seasonal climate during the Albian-Cenomanian transition in Western Europe. 相似文献
