The nonlinear excitation of fast magnetosonic waves by phase mixing Alfvén waves in a cold plasma with a smooth inhomogeneity of density across a uniform magnetic field is considered. If initially fast waves are absent from the system, then nonlinearity leads to their excitation by transversal gradients in the Alfvén wave. The efficiency of the nonlinear Alfvén–fast magnetosonic wave coupling is strongly increased by the inhomogeneity of the medium. The fast waves, permanently generated by Alfvén wave phase mixing, are refracted from the region with transversal gradients of the Alfvén speed. This nonlinear process suggests a mechanism of indirect plasma heating by phase mixing through the excitation of obliquely propagating fast waves.  相似文献

The properties of the resonator are considered for fast magnetoacoustic waves. It is shown that tunnel penetration of waves from the resonator leads either to heating of the medium in the Alfvén resonance vicinity (if the inclination angle of the magnetic field is smaller than the critical angle), or to excitation of Alfvén waves at the Alfvén resonance (if the inclination angle is larger than the critical angle). This suggests that non-radiative heating of the corona can be due to solar p-mode oscillations.  相似文献

The transformation of atmospheric acoustic waves into plasma waves in the ionosphere is investigated. The transformation mechanism is based on plasma wave exitation by growing acoustic waves, when a frequency/wavelength matching situation is reached. The interaction of acoustic and plasma waves occurs through collisions of neutral particles with ions. For the case of ion-sound waves, oscillations on ion cyclotron frequency and Alfvén waves is considered. A peculiarity of Alfvén waves is the wide frequency band which may be stimulated through wave-wave interaction.  相似文献

The nonlinear propagation of the Alfvén and magnetosonic waves in the solar corona is investigated in terms of model equations. Due to viscous effects taken into account the propagation of the fast wave itself is governed by Burgers type equations possessing both expansion and compression shock solutions. Numerical simulations show that both parallely and perpendicularly propagating fast waves can steepen into shocks if their amplitudes are in excess of some sizeable fraction of the Alfvén velocity. However, if the magnetic field changes linearly in the perpendicular direction, then formation of perpendicular shocks can be hindered. The Alfvén waves exhibit a tendency to drive both the slow and fast magnetosonic waves whose propagation is described by linearized Boussinesq type equations with ponderomotive terms due to the Alfvén wave. The limits of the slow and fast waves are investigated.  相似文献

The properties of Alfvén waves in a vertical column of field are pointed out as a guide in treating the complicated problem of overstability. There are internal Alfvén waves of arbitrary form propagating along the magnetic field, without disturbing the fluid outside the column. There are also surface waves which involve the fluid both inside and outside the column of field. The surface waves propagate at a speed less than the Alfvén speed.Convective forces couple the internal and external fluid motions. If the forces are not too strong, the identity of the modes, as internal waves or surface waves, is maintained. The surface waves are unstable and, we suggest, may contribute to some of the activity of a sunspot. We suggest that the internal Alfvén wave modes are of more central interest for producing the basic sunspot phenomena. They represent the degenerate case, and their form is worked out in some detail. The overstable Alfvén wave modes peak sharply near the outer edge of the field, and do not strongly disturb the fluid outside. We suggest that this effect contributes to the sharp edge of the sunspot umbra.Recent observations by Giovanelli show intense wave activity originating inside the edge of the umbra. We tentatively identify the activity with the peak in the overstable modes within the umbra. This work was supported in part by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration under Grant NGL 14-001-001.  相似文献

Alfvén waves are generated easily in many cosmic plasmas, but they possess no linear damping mechanism since they are not compressive. The most prominent nonlinear damping occurs when one Alfvén wave decays into another plus a slow magnetosonic wave, or two Alfvén waves combine into one fast magnetosonic wave; the resulting magnetosonic waves can then be dissipated. The nonlinear coupling rates are presented, with special emphasis on the astrophysically important case of sound speed Alfvén speed. Streaming cosmic rays generate Alfvén waves moving in the direction of streaming, but they reabsorb the backward moving waves then produced by wave decay. The possible steady states for this system of cosmic rays and Alfvén waves turn out to be highly restricted.Supported by NSF grant GP-15218.  相似文献

The filamentation instability of finite amplitude left-hand circularly polarized Alfvén waves has been investigated taking into account the second-order density and magnetic field perturbations that are created by the Alfvén wave pressure. The minimum scale length and time over which the filamentation occurs, are found. Our results are applied to Alfvén waves that should scatter cosmic rays in the interstellar medium (ISM).  相似文献

The propagation and interference of Alfvén waves in magnetic regions is studied. A multilayer approximation of the standard models of the solar atmosphere is used. In each layer, there is a linear law of temperature variation and a power law of Alfvén velocity variation. The analytical solutions of a wave equation are stitched at the layer boundaries. The low-frequency Alfvén waves (P > 1 s) are able to transfer the energy from sunspots into the corona by tunneling only. The chromosphere is not a resonance filter for the Alfvén waves. The interference and resonance of Alfvén waves are found to be important to wave propagation through the magnetic coronal arches. The transmission coefficient of Alfvén waves into the corona increases sharply on the resonance frequences. To take into account the wave absorption in the corona, a method of equivalent schemes is developed. The heating of a coronal arch by Alfvén waves is discussed.  相似文献

We analyse the linear transformation of Alfvén p-modes into quasisurface waves and the resonant absorption of Alfvén p-waves in a slowly varying medium with a density gradient, parallel to the ambient homogeneous magnetic field. It is pointed out, that the energy transfer from Alfvén p-waves to quasisurface waves appear to take place in sunspots. The results obtained also suggest that Alfvén p-waves generated by overstability in sunspots may be absorbed in deep layers under sunspots. Moreover, it is very likely that part of the downward wave flux is reflected and hence it is possibble that essentially the energy from sunspots is transported outward by magnetogravitational waves, to which Alfvén p-waves are transformed.  相似文献

The importance of Alfvén wave generation in interacting plasmas is discussed in general and illustrated by the example of solar wind interaction with cometary plasma. The quasi-linear theory of Alfvén wave generation by cometary ions at distances far from the cometary nucleus is reviewed. The incorporation of a diabatic plasma compression effects into this theory modifies the spectrum of Alfvén waves and the integral intensity of magnetic field fluctuations previously published. These results are in quantitative agreement with thein situ observations near the comets Giacobini-Zinner and Halley. However, the polarization of quasi-linearly excited waves needs further detailed comparison with observations.Paper dedicated to Professor Hannes Alfvén on the occasion of his 80th birthday, 30 May 1988.  相似文献

It has long been suggested on theoretical grounds that MHD waves must occur in the solar corona, and have important implications for coronal physics. An unequivocal identification of such waves has however proved elusive, though a number of events were consistent with an interpretation in terms of MHD waves. Recent detailed observations of waves in events observed by SOHO and TRACE removes that uncertainty, and raises the importance of MHD waves in the corona to a higher level. Here we review theoretical aspects of how MHD waves and oscillations may occur in a coronal medium. Detailed observations of waves and oscillations in coronal loops, plumes and prominences make feasible the development of coronal seismology, whereby parameters of the coronal plasma (notably the Alfvén speed and through this the magnetic field strength) may be determined from properties of the oscillations. MHD fast waves are refracted by regions of low Alfvén speed and slow waves are closely field-guided, making regions of dense coronal plasma (such as coronal loops and plumes) natural wave guides for MHD waves. There are analogies with sound waves in ocean layers and with elastic waves in the Earth's crust. Recent observations also indicate that coronal oscillations are damped. We consider the various ways this may be brought about, and its implications for coronal heating.  相似文献

The spectrum of propagating waves and instabilities on a current-carrying, zero gas pressure, twisted magnetic flux loop is analysed for several models of the magnetic field structure. A surface wave mode of the fast Alfvén wave is found to exist, with damping of the wave when Alfvén resonance absorption occurs. If the loop is surrounded by a uniform, purely axial magnetic field, then the surface wave is always stable. If the loop is surrounded by a nonuniform field which is continuous with the loop's field, then the surface wave may connect to the unstable external kink mode.  相似文献

In high-speed solar wind, propagating Alfvén waves can be transferred into fast magnetosonic waves. When both the magnetic field strength and Alfvén wave velocity approach zero, fast magnetosonic waves will be transferred into ion-acoustic waves. As the phase velocity of ion-acoustic waves is slightly greater than the thermal velocity of protons, the turbulence energy of ion-acoustic waves can largely be absorbed by protons and can cause the mean temperature of protons to be greater than that of electrons by stochastic turbulence heating of ion-acoustic waves for protons.  相似文献

Nonlinear interaction of finite-amplitude Alfvén waves with non-resonant finite-frequency electrostatic and stationary electromagnetic perturbations is considered. This interaction is governed by a pair of coupled equations consisting of nonlinear Schrödinger equation for the Alfvén wave envelope and an equation for the plasma slow response that is driven by the ponderomotive force of the Alfvén wave packets. The modulational instability of a constant amplitude Alfvén pump is investigated and some new results for the growth rate of the instability are presented. It is found that a possible stationary state of the modulated Alfvén wave packets could lead to localized structures. The relevance of our investigation to the solar atmosphere is discussed.  相似文献

The excitation and dissipation of global and surface Alfvén waves and their conversion into kinetic Alfvén waves have been analyzed for solar coronal loops using a cylindrical model of a magnetized plasma. Also the optimal conditions for coronal loop heating regimes with density of dissipated power 103 erg cm–3 s–1 by the new scheme named combined Alfvén wave resonance are found. Combined Alfvén wave heating regime appears when the global Alfvén wave is immersed into the Alfvén continuum with the condition of not-so-sharp distribution of axial current.Instituto de Matemática, Universidade Federal Fluminense, Niterói, RJ, Brazil  相似文献

The effect of equilibrium flow on linear Alfvén resonances in coronal loops is studied in the compressible viscous MHD model. By means of a finite element code, the full set of linearised driven MHD equations are solved for a one-dimensional equilibrium model in which the equilibrium quantities depend only on the radial coordinate. Computations of resonant absorption of Alfvén waves for two classes of coronal loop models show that the efficiency of the process of resonant absorption strongly depends on both the equilibrium parameters and the characteristics of the resonant wave. We find that a steady equilibrium shear flow can also significantly influence the resonant absorption of Alfvén waves in coronal magnetic flux tubes. The presence of an equilibrium flow may therefore be important for resonant Alfvén waves and coronal heating. A parametric analysis also shows that the resonant absorption can be strongly enhanced by the equilibrium flow, even up to total dissipation of the incoming wave.  相似文献

In investigating the effects of collision Alfvén waves on the heating of a cool-type solar loop, like the post-flare loop, models are proposed, and the distributions of ion or electron density, temperature, pressure, and wave energy density are simulated. We assumed the magnetic field strength in the loop is about 100 G and found that Alfvén waves can propagate through the whole loop, that is to say, the decay length of collision Alfvén waves which we consider can reach to the height or length of the loop. Thus, the Alfvén wave heating is a considerable heating mechanism in cool loops. And we also found that the variations of density, pressure, and wave energy density are more significant than those of the temperature. In the whole loop, the temperature is of the order of 104 K. In comparison with other parameters, the temperature can be considered as homogeneous; hence, the heat conductive flux in the simulations is omitted.  相似文献

The propagation of solar Alfvén waves in interplanetary space is studied in the approximation of geometrical optics. Ray paths and the change of wave vectors and amplitudes along the rays are determined assuming an Archimedean-spiral interplanetary magnetic field. In particular, the Alfvénic fluctuations in the 2 directions perpendicular to the magnetic field direction are calculated under the assumption that the Alfvén waves are produced at the Sun and emitted with an isotropic directional distribution from a reference level close to the Sun. It turns out that due to the combined effect of spherical expansion of the solar wind flow and the spiralling of the interplanetary field the magnetic fluctuations in the direction perpendicular both to the unperturbed field and the radial direction have much more power than in the other directions (directional anisotropy). Our results are compared with spacecraft observations made by Belcher and Davis (1971), that show an anisotropy of a similar character. It is argued that under average conditions the physical process leading to an anisotropy is not selective coupling of Alfvén waves into compressional waves, as suggested by Belcher and Davis, but rather the above mentioned dissipationfree effect of geometrical optics. Finally, arguments are presented to explain the discrepancy between the calculated high anisotropy and the measured low anisotropy in terms of finite amplitude effects and wavescattering.  相似文献

The weakly nonlinear wave propagation of a slow sausage surface wave traveling along a magnetized slab with a thin nonuniform boundary layer is considered. The ideal incompressible MHD equations are used and the nonlinearities are assumed to be due to second harmonic generation. A nonlinear dispersion relation and the related nonlinear Schrödinger equation is derived. The existence of a continuous thin interface leads to sharply peaked field amplitudes due to resonant interaction with local Alfvén waves. It is shown that the nonlinear effects from processes within the thin layer are much more important than those from the main slab. Furthermore, the nonlinear interaction with local Alfvén waves yields a nonlinear damping rate of the wave that is much larger than the linear damping rate when the transition layer is sufficiently thin.  相似文献

Kinetic Alfvén waves are examined in the presence of ion and electron beams with bi-Maxwellian distribution functions. The theory of particle aspect analysis is used to evaluate the trajectories of charged particles in the electromagnetic field of a kinetic Alfvén wave. The expressions for the field-aligned currents, perpendicular currents (with respect to B0), dispersion relation and growth-rate with marginal instability criteria are derived. The significance of the investigation for the earth's magnetoplasma is discussed.  相似文献
