Stellar photometry of images from the ACS and WFPC2 cameras on the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) is used to study the star composition and spatial distribution of stars in three edge-on visible spiral galaxies: NGC 891, NGC 4144, and NGC 4244. Measurements of the surface number density of old stars revealed two stellar subsystems in these galaxies: a thick disk and a halo. The boundaries of these subsystems, which consist mainly of red giants, are determined from the change in the gradient of the number density of the stars. The halos are flattened at the poles of the galaxies and extend to distances of 8–25 kpc from the planes of the galaxies. The present results on the number density distribution of stars with different ages perpendicular to the planes of these galaxies make it possible to improve our model for the stellar structure of spiral galaxies. Based on archival Hubble Space Telescope ACS/WFC images, we have performed stellar photometry for eight dwarf galaxies of different types (Irr, S0, E) with a populated horizontal branch on their Hertzsprung-Russell diagrams. We have identified probable RR Lyr stars in these galaxies and constructed the distribution of their number density along the minor axes of the galaxies. For comparison, similar distributions have also been constructed for red giants in the same galaxies. In all cases, the size of the subsystem of RR Lyr stars exceeds that of the subsystem of, on average, younger stars, red giants. Our results are consistent with the hypothesis about expansion of the stellar subsystems in dwarf galaxies that we suggested previously.  相似文献

Based on archival Hubble Space Telescope ACS/WFC images, we have performed stellar photometry for more than 0.6 million stars in the interacting galaxies NGC 5194 and NGC 5195 of the M51 system. Stars of various ages have been identified on the constructed Hertzsprung-Russell diagram: blue and red supergiants, AGB stars, and red giants. The distance to M51 has been measured from the position of the tip of the red giant branch, D = 9.9 ± 0.7 Mpc. We have determined the change in the metallicity of red supergiants along the galactic radius in NGC 5194. Despite the gravitational interaction, the distribution of stars in NGC 5194 does not differ from that in isolated galaxies. The asymmetric stellar structures of NGC5195 (the so-called “feathers”) formed through the interaction of two galaxies have been found to consist mostly of AGB stars.  相似文献

Based on archived images obtained with the Hubble Space Telescope, stellar photometry for 105 irregular galaxies has been conducted. We have shown the red supergiant and giant branches in the obtained Hertzsprung-Russel diagrams. Using the TRGB method, distances to galaxies and metallicity of red giants have been determined. The color index (V ? I) of the supergiant branch at the luminosity level MI = ?7 was chosen as the metallicity index of red supergiants. For the galaxies under study, the diagrams have been built, in which the correlation can be seen between the luminosity of galaxies (MB) and metallicity of red giants and supergiants. The main source of variance of the results in the obtained diagrams is, in our opinion, uncertainty inmeasurements of galaxy luminosities and star-forming outburst. The relation between metallicity of young and old stars shows that main enrichment of galaxies with metals has taken place in the remote past. Deviations of some galaxies in the obtained relation can possibly be explained with the fall of the intergalactic gas on them, although, this inconsiderably affects metallicities of the stellar content.  相似文献

We present a multicolour catalogue of faint galaxies situated close to bright stars,   V ≲ 15  , with the aim of identifying high-redshift galaxies suitable for study with adaptive optics-equipped near-infrared imagers and spectrographs. The catalogue is constructed from archival calibration observations of the United Kingdom Infrared Telescope (UKIRT) Faint Standard stars with the UKIRT Fast Track Imager (UFTI) camera on UKIRT. We have analysed the deepest 16 fields from the archive to provide a catalogue of galaxies brighter than   K ∼ 20.3  lying between 3 and 25 arcsec of the guide stars. We identify 111 objects in a total survey area of  8.7 arcmin2  . Of these, 87 are classified as galaxies based on their light profiles in our ∼0.5 arcsec median seeing K -band images. 12 of the galaxies have  ( J − K ) ≥ 2.0  consistent with them lying at high redshifts,   z ≳ 2  . These 12 very red galaxies have K -band magnitudes of   K = 18.1–20.1  and separations from the guide stars of 4–20 arcsec and hence are very well suited to adaptive optics studies to investigate their morphologies and spectral properties on sub-kpc scales. Based on archival Hubble Space Telescope (HST) ACS/WFC images, we have performed stellar photometry for eight fields of the spiral galaxy NGC 1313 and its satellite, the low-mass Sph/Irr galaxy AM0319-662. Stars of various ages have been identified on the constructed Hertzsprung–Russell diagrams: young supergiants, middle-aged stars, and old stars (red giants); their apparent distributions over the body of the galaxy are presented. The red supergiants and giants have been divided into groups with larger and smaller color indices, corresponding to a difference in stellar metallicity. These groups of stars are shown to have different spatial distributions and to belong to two galaxies, NGC1313 itself and the disrupted satellite. We have determined the distance to NGC 1313, D = 3.88 ± 0.07 Mpc, by the TRGB method from six fields. Our photometry of 2014 HST images has revealed an emerged charge transfer inefficiency on the ACS/WFC CCDs, which manifests itself as a dependence of the photometry of stars on their coordinates on the CCD.  相似文献

Stellar photometry for three fields in the Virgo cluster of galaxies has been performed on the basis of archival Hubble Space Telescope ACS/WFC images. The densely populated red giant branches belonging to cluster galaxies are seen on the constructed Hertzsprung–Russell diagrams. The distances to eight galaxies in the Virgo cluster have been determined by the TRGB method. The sizes of the stellar subsystems and the gradients in the number density of red giants along the galactic radius have been determined for the investigated galaxies. The stellar periphery of the galaxies has been found to extend to great distances and to cover the entire area of the images used. Therefore, the stars that have previously been thought to be intracluster stars actually belong to the periphery of neighboring galaxies.  相似文献

Based on archival Hubble Space Telescope images, we have performed stellar photometry of several fields in the isolated spiral galaxies NGC 6503 and NGC 6946 with high peculiar velocities. Based on the TRGB method, we have determined the distances to the galaxies: D = 6.30 ± 0.10 Mpc for NGC 6503 and D = 6.72 ± 0.15 Mpc for NGC 6946. The current stellar content of the galaxies does not differ from that of other similar galaxies. The metallicity for young stars in NGC 6503 is Z = 0.02 (corresponding to the solar metallicity), while the metallicity for stars in NGC 6946 reaches Z = 0.05. Very few old globular clusters have been found in NGC 6946, while they have not been found at all in NGC 6503. The number density distribution of stars with different ages in NGC 6503 does not differ from the analogous distributions in other galaxies. The large sizes of the thick disk in NGC 6503, which is clearly seen up to 6 kpc from the galactic disk plane and whose possible extension is noticeable up to 8.6 kpc from the plane, are a difference. The sizes of the region occupied by red giants of the disk in NGC 6503 are 51 × 17 kpc, which are not much larger than the sizes of this galaxy from H I radio observations.  相似文献

A large number of early-type galaxies are now known to possess blue and red subpopulations of globular clusters. We have compiled a data base of 28 such galaxies exhibiting bimodal globular cluster colour distributions. After converting to a common V – I colour system, we investigate correlations between the mean colour of the blue and red subpopulations with galaxy velocity dispersion. We support previous claims that the mean colours of the blue globular clusters are unrelated to their host galaxy. They must have formed rather independently of the galaxy potential they now inhabit. The mean blue colour is similar to that for halo globular clusters in our Galaxy and M31. The red globular clusters, on the other hand, reveal a strong correlation with galaxy velocity dispersion. Furthermore, in well-studied galaxies the red subpopulation has similar, and possibly identical, colours to the galaxy halo stars. Our results indicate an intimate link between the red globular clusters and the host galaxy; they share a common formation history. A natural explanation for these trends would be the formation of the red globular clusters during galaxy collapse.  相似文献

We present RIJHK imaging of seven radio galaxies from the 7C Redshift Survey (7CRS) which lack strong emission lines and we use these data to investigate their spectral energy distributions (SEDs) with models that constrain their redshifts. Six of these seven galaxies have extremely red colours ( R − K >5.5) and we find that almost all of them lie in the redshift range 1< z <2. We also present near-infrared spectroscopy of these galaxies which demonstrate that their SEDs are not dominated by emission lines, although tentative lines, consistent with H α at z =1.45 and z =1.61, are found in two objects. Although the red colours of the 7CRS galaxies can formally be explained by stellar populations that are either very old or young and heavily reddened, independent evidence favours the former hypothesis. At z ∼1.5 at least 1/4 of powerful radio jets are triggered in massive (> L *) galaxies, which formed the bulk of their stars several Gyr earlier, that is at epochs corresponding to redshifts z ≳5. If a similar fraction of all z ∼1.5 radio galaxies are old, then extrapolation of the radio luminosity function shows that, depending on the radio source lifetimes, between 10 and 100 per cent of the near-IR selected extremely red object (ERO) population undergo a radio outburst at epochs corresponding to 1< z <2. An ERO found serendipitously in the field of one of the 7CRS radio sources appears to be a radio-quiet analogue of the 7CRS EROs with an emission line likely to be [O  ii ] at z =1.20. The implication is that some of the most massive elliptical galaxies formed the bulk of their stars at z ≳5 and these objects probably undergo at least two periods of active galactic nucleus activity: one at high redshift during which the black hole forms and another one at an epoch corresponding to z ∼1.5.  相似文献

Near-infrared spectra for a sample of 31 elliptical galaxies in the Coma cluster are obtained. The galaxies are selected to be ellipticals (no lenticulars), with a large spatial distribution, covering both the core and outskirts of the cluster (i.e. corresponding to regions with large density contrasts). COsp (2.3-μm) absorption indices, measuring the contribution from intermediate-age red giant and supergiant stars to the near-infrared light of the ellipticals, are then estimated.
It is found that the strength of COsp features in elliptical galaxies increases from the core ( r <02) to the outskirts ( r >02) of the Coma cluster. Using the Mg2 strengths, it is shown that the observed effect is not caused by metallicity and is mostly caused by the presence of a younger population (giant and supergiant stars) in ellipticals in the outskirts (low-density region) of the cluster.
Using the COsp features, the origin of the scatter on the near-infrared Fundamental Plane (the relation between the effective diameter, effective surface brightness and velocity dispersion) of elliptical galaxies is studied. Correcting this relation for contributions from the red giant and supergiant stars, the rms scatter reduces from 0.077 to 0.073 dex. Although measurable, the contribution from these intermediate-age stars to the scatter on the near-infrared Fundamental Plane of ellipticals is only marginal.
A relation is found between the COsp and V − K colours of ellipticals, corresponding to a slope of 0.036±0.016, significantly shallower than that from the Mg2–( V − K ) relation. This is studied using stellar synthesis models.  相似文献

We study the effect of different star formation regimes on the dynamical and chemical evolution of Blue Compact Dwarf galaxies. To do that, we adopt a 2-D hydrocode coupled with detailed chemical yields originating from SNeII, SNeIa and from intermediate-mass stars. Based on archival Hubble Space Telescope ACS/WFC images, we have performed stellar photometry for the metal-poor galaxy DDO 68. The apparent distributions of stars of different ages and stellarmetallicity determinations indicate that DDO68 is a systemof two galaxies that have different stellar metallicities (Z = 0.004 and 0.001) and are in the stage of interaction or merging. We have determined the distance to DDO 68, D = 12.0 ± 0.3 Mpc, which differs significantly from previous estimates of the distance to this system. A concentration of red giants is observed outside DDO 68. This can be interpreted as the periphery of a partially visible low-surface-brightness galaxy located at the same distance as DDO 68. Comparison of the constructed CM diagrams with theoretical isochrones from Bertelli et al. has allowed us to determine that the age of each galaxy is at least 10 Gyr.  相似文献

We present results for a galaxy formation model that includes a simple treatment for the disruption of dwarf galaxies by gravitational forces and galaxy encounters within galaxy clusters. This is implemented a posteriori in a semi-analytic model by considering the stability of cluster dark matter subhaloes at   z = 0  . We assume that a galaxy whose dark matter substructure has been disrupted will itself disperse, while its stars become part of the population of intracluster stars responsible for the observed intracluster light. Despite the simplicity of this assumption, our results show a substantial improvement over previous models and indicate that the inclusion of galaxy disruption is indeed a necessary ingredient of galaxy formation models. We find that galaxy disruption suppresses the number density of dwarf galaxies by about a factor of 2. This makes the slope of the faint end of the galaxy luminosity function shallower, in agreement with observations. In particular, the abundance of faint, red galaxies is strongly suppressed. As a result, the luminosity function of red galaxies and the distinction between the red and the blue galaxy populations in colour–magnitude relationships are correctly predicted. Finally, we estimate a fraction of intracluster light comparable to that found in clusters of galaxies.  相似文献

We have resolved the stars in the halo and in the diffuse northeastern shell of the nearest giant elliptical galaxy NGC 5128 using VLT with FORS1 and ISAAC. Dominating feature in the optical-near IR color-magnitude diagrams is abroad red giant branch, indicating a large spread in metallicity of the stars. We have detected a significant number of sources brighter than the tip of the red giant branch. The variability monitoring of these bright red giants shows that they are long period variables similar to Miras. Some features of a sample of galaxies from the Second Byurakan Survey are discussed. Most of them are small galaxies with star formation. It is shown that different types of galaxies are in the Survey, with high, medium, and low levels of excitation and continua ranging from blue to relatively red. Many of the galaxies have absorption lines in their spectra; their continua are formed by stars in later spectral classes.  相似文献

The extremely red galaxies (ERGs) are defined in terms of their very red optical-to-near IR colours (as R − K >5 or I − K >4). Originally this selection was aimed at selecting old (>1 Gyr) passively evolving elliptical galaxies at intermediate redshift (1< z <2), but it was soon discovered that young star-forming dusty galaxies can show similar colours and therefore be selected in the same surveys. It is crucial to distinguish between these two populations because they have very different consequences on the models of galaxy formation. Here we show that old ellipticals and dusty starbursts are expected to show different colours in the ( I − K ) versus ( J − K ) diagram for redshift range 1< z <2, thus providing a useful tool to classify ERGs in large samples up to K <20. This is mainly owing to the fact that old galaxies at these redshifts have a strong 4000-Å break at λ <1.2 μm ( J band), while dusty galaxies show smoother spectral energy distributions and therefore redder J − K colours. We discuss this difference in detail both in the framework of the stellar population synthesis models and by using observed spectra. The selection criterion is also compared with the properties of ERGs of known nature. We also show that this colour selection criterion is also useful to separate the ERGs from brown dwarf stars showing similar optical-to-IR colours.  相似文献

We have determined a dust-free colour–magnitude (CM) relation for spiral galaxies, by using I  −  K colours in edge-on galaxies above the plane. We find that the scatter in this relation is small and approximately as large as can be explained by observational uncertainties. The slope of the near-IR CM relation is steeper for spirals than for elliptical galaxies. We suggest two possible explanations. First, the difference could be caused by vertical colour gradients in spiral galaxies. In that case these gradients should be similar for all galaxies, on average ∼0.15 dex in [Fe/H] per scaleheight, and should increase for later galaxy types. The most likely explanation, however, is that spirals and ellipticals have intrinsically different CM relations. This means that the stars in spirals are younger than those in ellipticals. The age, however, or the fraction of young stars in spiral galaxies would be determined solely by the luminosity of the galaxy, and not by its environment.  相似文献

We have extended our previous analysis of morphologically selected elliptical and S0 galaxies in the Hubble Deep Field (HDF) North to include Hubble Space Telescope ( HST ) data in the HDF South and the HDFS–NICMOS areas. Our final sample amounts to 69 E/S0 galaxies with K <20.15 over an area of 11 arcmin2. Although a moderately small number over a modest sky area, this sample benefits from the best imaging and photometric data available on high-redshift galaxies. Multi-waveband photometry allows us to estimate with good accuracy the redshifts for the majority of these galaxies, which lack a spectroscopic measure. We confirm our previous findings that massive E/S0s tend to disappear from flux-limited samples at z >1.4. This adds to the evidence that the rest-frame colours and spectral energy distributions (SEDs) of the numerous objects found at 0.8< z <1.2 are inconsistent with a very high redshift of formation for the bulk of stars, while they are more consistent with protracted (either continuous or episodic) star formation down to z ≤1. These results based on high-quality imaging on a small field can be complemented with data from colour-selected extremely red objects (EROs) on much larger sky areas: our claimed demise of E/S0s going from z =1 to z =1.5 is paralleled by a similarly fast decrease in the areal density of EROs when the colour limit is changed from ( R − K )=5 to ( R − K )=6 (corresponding to z ≃1 and z ≃1.3 respectively). Altogether, the redshift interval from 1 to 2 seems to correspond to a very active phase for the assembly of massive E/S0 galaxies in the field, and also probably one where a substantial fraction of their stars are formed.  相似文献
