Horizontal-branch star models

Evolutionary tracks of 0.9M , 0.7M and 0.6M models for Population II stars have been computed in the post-red giant phase. The stars are initially composed of a helium core containing a mass fraction equal to 0.9 and of a hydrogen-rich envelope. A search for discrete gamma-ray sources of energy greater than 2×1012 eV

The results of the observations to search gamma-ray sources with the energy greater than 2×10¹² eV, which were made in Crimean Astrophysical Observatory during the years 1969–73 are presented. A technique of the detection of the EAS Cerenkov flashes was used.The quality of the data obtained is analysed. The criteria for the selection of the data free from meteorological variations are considered.It was shown that two objects, namely, Cyg X-3 and Cas -1, may be the sources of high-energy gamma quanta. It is probable that the object with the coordinates =05^h15^m, =+1° is the source of gamma-rays as well. An unidentified object Cas -1 is variable: gamma-ray flux was observed twice — in Sepember–October 1971 and in December 1972. It is possible that the flux from Cyg X-3 has a period of 4.8 hr.

The behaviour of the infrared lines of neutral oxygen and the balmer lines of hydrogen in the spectra of early-type stars with emission lines

The equivalent widths of the oxygen lines at 7774 and 8446 and of H (and some H) have been measured for 22 early-type, emission-line stars. A strong correlation between H and 8446 intensities has been found, although there is no such correlation between H and 7774. This confirms the probability that Bowen's mechanism is operative (the neutral oxygen 3³ D state is overpopulated because the excitation energy of Ly- nearly coincides with that of theOi 1025 line). The possibility of using 8446 and H equivalent widths for a comparison of oxygen to hydrogen abundances in these stars is discussed.     

Periodic orbits of stars in axisymmetrical stellar systems

Periodic orbits of stars in axisymmetrical nearly spherical stellar systems have been investigated. Generating orbits have been found among periodic ones relating to the spherically-symmetrical field. The linear approximation appears to be insufficient for constructing periodic trajectories. Possible variants of the generating periodic solutions have been found, which give rise to disturbed periodic orbits in the second approximation.

Intensity fluctuations in Fraunhofer lines

An expression is derived for the fluctuation (t) in emergent intensity (observed at some wavelength in a Fraunhofer line or the continuum) caused by a perturbation in temperature (z, t) in the Sun's atmosphere. If the contribution function for the observed intensity is single-peaked near z and if (z) and p(z) are not too rapidly varying, then (t) m (z , t)+N p(z , t) where m and N depend on the structure of the atmosphere. We compute M, N, and contribution functions for several values of and in the inner wings of the K line (13933 Caii).Presently on leave of absence from the Institute for Astronomy, Honolulu, Hawaii.The National Center for Atmospheric Research is sponsored by the National Science Foundation.     

The solar O i λ 7773 triplet

The reduction of observations of the O i 7773 triplet obtained at high spatial resolution (0.5) at two disk positions is described. Two sets of triplet profile data are presented at each disk position. One set represents data taken from 0.5 regions centered on the brightest granules, while the other set represents data taken from 0.5 regions centered on the cooler infalling intergranular material.     

Correlation of He II lyman alpha with He I 10830 Å, and with chromospheric and EUV coronal emission

This paper describes the results of comparing SERTS-3 images obtained in the transition region line of Heii 304 with chromospheric Hei 10830 absorption, with strong coronal lines of Mgix 368 , Fexv 284 and 417 , and Fexvi 335 and 31 , with H, with Caii 8542 , and with magnetograms in Fei 8688H. All of the images are illustrated, and the image reconstruction techniques used are described and evaluated. The high correlation of the Heii 304 and Hei 10830 images, originally found by Harvey and Sheeley (1977), is confirmed and is put on a quantitative basis. We find that the supergranulation network has greater contrast, and that filaments appear darker, in 10830 than in 304 . In active regions, the 304 line follows more closely the behavior of H and Caii 8542 than the 10830 line.

On the classification of motion in the generalized two-dimensional problem of three fixed centres

A qualitative analysis and classification of forms of motion in the problem under consideration have been carried out using a method (applicable to any case of integrability) due to Liouville. All the forms of the two-dimensional motions for any masses (negative and complex as well) at fixed centres corresponding to the real potential have been considered.

     

Approximate expressions for Gyrosynchrotron radiation in Transverse Propagation

Two sets of accurate approximate expressions for the gyrosynchrotron radiation in the transverse propagation case are presented for the first time. They contain emissivity _–/BNand absorptivity _– B/Nfor e-mode, effective temperature T _effand frequency of peak brightness _p. The expressions are designed for the range 2 to 7 of electron energy spectral index and for the ranges from 2 to 10 and 10 to 100 of harmonic numbers s(=/_B). Their statistical error is, respectively, ±18% and ±29% for _–/BNand _– B/Nfor 10/_B100, ±128% and and ±170% for 2/_B10.     

Emission cores in H and K lines

Calculations are made for the center-limb variations of the K₂ and K₃ components of the solar Ca ii K line using an optically thick model of the chromosphere. The center-limb variations are shown to require an increase of Doppler width with height in the chromosphere and to depend critically upon the location of the point where _D has increased by a factor e. Good agreement with observations is found when, and only when, the increase in _D occurs nearly simultaneously with the increase in chromospheric temperature.
