We explore the possibility of determining the corpuscular composition of the plasma in the relativistic jets of blazars and microquasars from data on the polarization and intensity of their radio synchrotron emission. We have constructed a universal diagram that allows the relative content of nonrelativistic electrons to be established in specific objects using information about their frequency spectra and polarization at individual frequencies. As a result, we have found that the electron plasma component in the jets of the blazars 3C 279 and BL Lac is relativistic. In the jets of the microquasar GRS 1915+105, the cold plasma density may be comparable to or considerably higher than the relativistic particle density.  相似文献

The measured brightness temperatures of the low-frequency synchrotron radiation from intense extragalactic sources reach 1011–1012 K. If there is some amount of nonrelativistic ionized gas within such sources, it must be heated through induced Compton scattering of the radiation. If cooling via inverse Compton scattering of the same radio radiation counteracts this heating, then the plasma can be heated up to mildly relativistic temperatures kT~10–100 keV. In this case, the stationary electron velocity distribution can be either relativistic Maxwellian or quasi-Maxwellian (with the high-velocity tail suppressed), depending on the efficiency of Coulomb collisions and other relaxation processes. We derive several simple approximate expressions for the induced Compton heating rate of mildly relativistic electrons in an isotropic radiation field, as well as for the stationary electron distribution function and temperature. We give analytic expressions for the kernel of the integral kinetic equation (one as a function of the scattering angle, and the other for an isotropic radiation field), which describes the photon redistribution in frequency through induced Compton scattering in thermal plasma. These expressions can be used in the parameter range [in contrast to the formulas written out previously in Sazonov and Sunyaev (2000), which are less accurate].  相似文献

A model is developed for the H2O maser source observed in the circumnuclear region of the galaxy NGC 4258. The maser emission originates at distances of 0.15–0.29 pc from the center in a thin, cold accretion disk (gas-dust torus) rotating around a supermassive black hole of mass 4 × 107 M . The conditions for the emergence of an inverse population of the signal 616?523 levels in ortho-H2O working molecules are simulated numerically. The complex line profile, which includes both central and high-velocity components, is calculated. A comparison of the calculations with radiointerferometric and spectrophotometric observations allowed the physical conditions in the emitting region to be determined.  相似文献

Based on the 1964–1996 observations in the frequency range 0.325–90 GHz, we study peculiarities of the variability of the quasar OH 471 (z=3.4). The double-humped spectrum had peaks at frequencies near 1 and 20 GHz. The flux density of the low-frequency component first decreased and then began to increase. The high-frequency component rose to 2.5 Jy in the late 1970s. The peak frequencies were virtually constant. VLBI observations at 1.6 GHz revealed a core-jet structure with the jet extended eastward to 5 mas. The object is a powerful quasar.  相似文献

The 325-MHz observations of the quasar OH 471 (z=3.4) in 1985–1996 revealed variability of its radio emission. Over this period, its radio flux density increased by a factor of 1.6. A steep-spectrum radio source was identified $2_.^\prime 5$ north of the quasar. Its radio flux density is 1.46 mJy at 5 GHz and 14.5 mJy at 350 MHz.  相似文献

Observations at the Crimean Astrophysical Observatory are used to show that the ultrahigh-energy gamma-ray flux from the galaxy Mk 501 varies with a $23\mathop .\limits^d 2$ period. The period was determined by the HEGRA team from the 1997 observations.  相似文献

The observed reduction in the fraction of quasars with polarized radiation as the redshift increases is explained by an increase in the magnetic-field strength in accretion disks at high z. The emerging Faraday rotation causes the radiation to be depolarized. This mechanism allows the magnetic fields in accretion disks to be estimated at several hundred gauss. We give simple asymptotic formulas that describe the Faraday depolarization in optically thick accretion disks.  相似文献

We present our broadband UBVRI observations of the nucleus of the Seyfert galaxy NGC 4151 from 1989 until 2000 at three astronomical observatories: the Crimean Station of the Sternberg Astronomical Institute, the Special Astrophysical Observatory in the Caucasus, and the Maidanak Observatory of the Ulugbek Astronomical Institute in Uzbekistan. All data have been reduced to a single system and are given for an A=27.″5 aperture. Regular R and I observations show that the pattern of optical variability is the same in all bands; the relative variability amplitude decreases from U to V, but it is even slightly larger in R than in V. The variability amplitude of the component fluctuating on time scales of several months is proportional to the UBV flux from the component varying on times scales of several years. The correlation between the slow and rapid components significantly weakens in the red, and no correlation has been found between the flux from the slow component and the amplitude of the rapid component in R. The color characteristics correspond to the recombination radiation from an optically thick plasma beyond the Balmer limit.  相似文献

We present diagrams depicting the expected inter-dependences of two key kinematical parameters of radio knots in the parsec-scale jets of blazars, deduced from VLBI observations. The two parameters are the apparent speed (υ app = app) and the effective Doppler boosting factor (δ eff) of the relativistically moving radio knot. A novel aspect of these analytical computations of β-δ diagrams is that they are made for parsec-scale jets having a conical shape, with modest opening angles (ω up to 10°), in accord with the VLBI observations of the nuclei of the nearest radio galaxies. Another motivating factor is the recent finding that consideration of a conical geometry can have important implications for the interpretation of a variety of radio observations of blazar jets. In addition to uniform jet flows (i.e., those having a uniform bulk Lorentz factor, Γ), computational results are also presented for stratified jets where an ultra-relativistic central spine along the jet axis is surrounded by a slower moving sheath, possibly arising from a velocity shear.  相似文献

We performed spectroscopic observations of 22 radio sources from the Zelenchuk survey (Sternberg Astronomical Institute) using the 6-m and 1-m Special Astrophysical Observatory telescopes. For 18 objects, we determined the redshifts. Ten, seven, and one of these objects were identified with quasars, elliptical galaxies, and a Seyfert galaxy, respectively. Four radio sources have a continuum spectrum, and three of them are BL Lac objects. We failed to classify one object.  相似文献

We present the classification of optical identifications and radio spectra of six radio sources from a complete (in flux density) sample in the declination range 10° to 12°30′ (J2000.0). The observations were carried out with the 6-m Special Astrophysical Observatory telescope (Russia) in the wavelength range 3600–10000 Å, the 2.1-m GHAO telescope (Mexico) in the range 4200–9000 Å, and the RATAN-600 radio telescope in the frequency range 0.97–21.7 GHz. Three of the six objects under study are classified as quasars, one is a BL Lac object, one is an absorption-line radio galaxy, and one is an emission-line radio galaxy. Five objects have flat radio spectra, and one object has a power-law radio spectrum. All of the radio sources identified as quasars or BL Lac objects show variable radio flux densities. The spectra of three objects were separated into extended and compact components.  相似文献

We present two-year-long observations of the flux of very-high-energy (~1012 eV) gamma rays from the active galactic nucleus Mk 501 performed with a Cherenkov detector at the Crimean Astrophysical Observatory. A gamma-ray flux from the object was shown to exist at confidence levels of 11 and 7 standard deviations for 1997 and 1998, respectively. The flux varied over a wide range. The mean flux at energies >1012 eV, as inferred from the 1997 and 1998 data, is (5.0±0.6)×10?11 and (3.7±0.6)×10?11 cm?2 s?1, respectively. The errors are the sum of statistical observational and modeling errors. The mean power released in the form of gamma rays is ~2×1043 erg s?1 sr?1.  相似文献

We discuss the possible observational manifestation of the formation of massive black holes in galactic nuclei in the form of an intense high-energy neutrino flux. A short-lived (≤10 yr) hidden neutrino source results from the natural dynamicalal evolution of a central star cluster in the galactic nucleus before its gravitational collapse. The central star cluster at the final evolutionary stage consists of degenerate compact stars (neutron stars and stellar-mass black holes) and is embedded in a massive gaseous envelope produced by destructive collisions of normal stars. Multiple fireballs from frequent collisions of neutron stars give rise to a tenuous quasi-stationary cavity in the central part of the massive envelope. The cavity is filled with shock waves on which an effective cosmic-ray acceleration takes place. Allthe accelerated particles, except the secondary high-energy neutrinos, are absorbed in the dense envelope. The neutrino signal that carries information on the dynamicals of the collapsing galactic nucleus can be recorded by a neutrino detector with an effective area S∼1 km2.  相似文献

In the unified scheme for high-luminosity radio galaxies and quasars, the core-dominated quasars are seen at small angles to the line of sight and the lobe-dominated quasars at intermediate angles, while the radio galaxies lie close to the plane of the sky. In radio galaxies, the quasar nucleus is hidden from our view by a putative torus. Such a scenario should also affect the observed polarization properties of the cores, with the core-dominated quasars, lobe-dominated quasars and radio galaxies having progressively lower core polarization at a given frequency and higher rotation measure because of Faraday effects. In this paper, we report that the core polarization of weak-cored quasars has a median value of less than about 0.4 per cent and is indeed much smaller than for core-dominated quasars, where the median value is about 2.5 per cent. We suggest that this might be a result of the depolarization caused by the edge of the obscuring torus or disc. We also examine the relative orientation of the core-polarization E -vector at λ6 cm and the radio axis for the weak-cored quasars. The sample is small but does not show the significant trend reported earlier for cores of moderate strength. This could also be the result of Faraday rotation by the material in the edge of the torus or disc. These results are consistent with the basic ideas of the unified scheme.  相似文献

Allowing for the conical shape of ultrarelativistic blazar jets with opening angles of a few degrees on parsec-scales, we show that their bulk Lorentz factors and viewing angles can be much larger than the values usually inferred by combining their flux-variability and proper-motion measurements. This is in accord with our earlier finding that such ultrarelativistic (Lorentz factor,  Γ > 30  ) conical jets can reconcile the relatively slow apparent motions of Very Long Baseline Interferometry (VLBI) knots in TeV blazars with the extremely fast flows implied by their rapid γ-ray variability. This jet geometry also implies that de-projected jet opening angles will typically be significantly underestimated from VLBI measurements. In addition, de-projected jet lengths will be considerably overestimated if high Lorentz factors and significant opening angles are not taken into account.  相似文献

We present the results of multiwavelength observations of cores and hotspots, at L , C , X and U bands with the Very Large Array, of a matched sample of radio galaxies and quasars selected from the Molonglo Reference Catalogue . We use these observations to determine the spectra of cores and hotspots, and test the unified scheme for radio galaxies and quasars. Radio cores have been detected at all wavelengths in all of the quasars in our sample, whereas only ∼50 per cent of the galaxies have cores detected in at least one of the wavelengths . The degree of core prominence in this sample is consistent with the unified scheme for radio galaxies and quasars. A comparison of the distributions of the two-point spectral index of the cores in our sample of lobe-dominated quasars, with the distributions in a matched sample of core-dominated quasars, shows that the distributions for these two classes are significantly different, and this is consistent with the expectations of the unified scheme. The difference in the spectral indices of the two hotspots on opposite sides is also significantly larger for quasars than for radio galaxies, as is expected in the unified scheme. We also investigate the relationship between the spectral index of the hotspots and the redshift or luminosity for our sample of sources.  相似文献

We study the collimation of radio jets in the high-luminosity Fanaroff–Riley class II sources by examining the dependence of the sizes of hotspots and knots in the radio jets on the overall size of the objects for a sample of compact steep-spectrum (CSS) and larger-sized objects. The objects span a wide range in overall size from about 50 pc to nearly 1 Mpc. The mean size of the hotspots increases with the source size during the CSS phase, which is typically taken to be about 20 kpc, and the relationship flattens for the larger sources. The sizes of the knots in the compact as well as the larger sources are consistent with this trend. We discuss possible implications of these trends. We find that the hotspot closer to the nucleus or core component tends to be more compact for the most asymmetric objects where the ratio of separations of the hotspots from the nucleus r d>2. These highly asymmetric sources are invariably CSS objects, and their location in the hotspot size ratio–separation ratio diagram is possibly the result of their evolution in an asymmetric environment. We also suggest that some sources, especially of lower luminosity, exhibit an asymmetry in the collimation of the oppositely directed radio jets.  相似文献

We constructed a grid of relativistic models for standard high-relative-luminosity accretion α-disks around supermassive Kerr black holes (BHs) and computed X-ray spectra for their hot, effectively optically thin inner parts by taking into account general-relativity effects. They are known to be heated to high (~106–109 K) temperatures and to cool down through the Comptonization of intrinsic thermal radiation. Their spectra are power laws with an exponential cutoff at high energies; i.e., they have the same shape as those observed in active galactic nuclei (AGNs). Fitting the observed X-ray spectra of AGNs with computed spectra allowed us to estimate the fundamental parameters of BHs (their mass and Kerr parameter) and accretion disks (luminosity and inclination to the line of sight) in 28 AGNs. We show that the Kerr parameter for BHs in AGNs is close to unity and that the disk inclination correlates with the Seyfert type of AGN, in accordance with the unification model of activity. The estimated BH masses Mx are compared with the masses Mrev determined by the reverberation mapping technique. For AGNs with luminosities close to the Eddington limit, these masses agree and the model under consideration may be valid for them. For low-relative-luminosity AGNs, the differences in masses increase with decreasing relative luminosity and their X-ray emission cannot be explained by this model.  相似文献
