Close temporal correlation between high-frequency Langmuir waves and low-frequency electromagnetic whistler waves has been observed recently within magnetic holes of the solar wind. In order to account for these observations, a theory is formulated to describe the nonlinear coupling of Langmuir waves and whistler waves. It is shown that a Langmuir wave can interact nonlinearly with a whistler wave to produce either right-hand or left-hand circularly polarized electromagnetic waves. Nonlinear coupling of Langmuir waves and whistler waves may lead to the formation of modulated Langmuir wave packets as well as the generation of circularly polarized radio waves at the plasma frequency in the solar wind. Numerical examples of whistler frequency, nonlinear growth rate and modulation frequency for solar wind parameters are calculated.  相似文献

Non-linear, three-dimensional, time-dependent fluid simulations of whistler wave turbulence are performed to investigate role of whistler waves in solar wind plasma turbulence in which characteristic turbulent fluctuations are characterized typically by the frequency and length-scales that are, respectively, bigger than ion gyrofrequency and smaller than ion gyroradius. The electron inertial length is an intrinsic length-scale in whistler wave turbulence that distinguishably divides the high-frequency solar wind turbulent spectra into scales smaller and bigger than the electron inertial length. Our simulations find that the dispersive whistler modes evolve entirely differently in the two regimes. While the dispersive whistler wave effects are stronger in the large-scale regime, they do not influence the spectral cascades which are describable by a Kolmogorov-like   k −7/3  spectrum. By contrast, the small-scale turbulent fluctuations exhibit a Navier–Stokes-like evolution where characteristic turbulent eddies exhibit a typical   k −5/3  hydrodynamic turbulent spectrum. By virtue of equipartition between the wave velocity and magnetic fields, we quantify the role of whistler waves in the solar wind plasma fluctuations.  相似文献

We investigate the possibility of an additional acceleration of the high speed solar wind by whistler waves propagating outward from a coronal hole. We consider a stationary, spherically symmetric model and assume a radial wind flow as well as a radial magnetic field. The energy equation consists of (a) energy transfer of the electron beam which excites the whistler waves, and (b) energy transfer of the whistler waves described by conservation of wave action density. The momentum conservation equation includes the momentum transfer of two gases (a thermal gas and an electron beam). The variation of the temperature is described by a polytropic law. The variation of solar wind velocity with the radial distance is calculated for different values of energy density of the whistler waves. It is shown that the acceleration of high speed solar wind in the coronal hole due to the whistler waves is very important. We have calculated that the solar wind velocity at the earth's orbit is about equal to 670 km/sec (for wave energy density about 10?4 erg cm?3 at 1.1R⊙). It is in approximate agreement with the observed values.  相似文献

Slow and Fast Diffusion in Asteroid-Belt Resonances: A Review   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
This paper reviews recent advances in several topics of resonant asteroidal dynamics as the role of resonances in the transportation of asteroids and asteroidal debris to the inner and outer solar system; the explanation of the contrast of a depleted 2/1 resonance (Hecuba gap) and a high-populated 3/2 resonance (Hilda group); the overall stochasticity created in the asteroid belt by the short-period perturbations of Jupiter's orbit, with emphasis in the formation of significant three-period resonances, the chaotic behaviour of the outer asteroid belt, and the depletion of the Hecuba gap. This revised version was published online in July 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.  相似文献

Abstract The following discussion is divided into seven major sections. The first section outlines the scientific background and justification for asteroid studies in the context of understanding the formation and early evolution of the solar system. The second section briefly reviews the nature and distribution of the asteroid population. The third section discusses several major unresolved issues in asteroid and meteorite science which can potentially be addressed by asteroid remote sensing investigations. The fourth section outlines the nature and definition of the asteroid taxonomic classes. The fifth section summarizes the existing asteroidal spectral (and other remote sensing) data sets which are used to determine compositions and the techniques employed in the interpretation of such data. The sixth section explores the compositional meaning and diversity of these taxonomic classes and suggests meteoritic analogues for the taxonomic types. The seventh section describes the conclusions—or preliminary results—of several recent asteroid investigations which have focused on particular unsolved issues of the asteroid-meteorite relationship and of the early solar system properties. The final section discusses the overall conclusions and future directions.  相似文献

This paper examines the heating of asteroidal parent bodies by electrical induction during early solar evolution and prior to positioning of the sun onto the main sequence. Under the conditions assumed, which include a high initial solar spin rate, interplanetary electric fields of order 1 V/m would have existed in frames of reference comoving with the planets, leading to electrical heating from joule losses in the asteroidal interiors. The mechanism additionally requires the high plasma efflux characteristic of T Tauri objects and the presence of a circumstellar obscuration of the type commonly associated with early stellar objects. The proper combination of circumstellar obscuration, solar spin, solar wind flow, and starting planetary temperatures is shown to lead to asteroidal heating competitive with that found for a class of fossil radioactive species. The time dependence of the solar spin and plasma flow are shaped so as to be consistent with current views on the evolution to T Tauri objects and of the spin down of stars. Calculations also include cases of joint heating by fossil radionuclides and electrical induction, and show a complicated relationship due to the intrinsic nonlinearity of the electrical heating mechanism. Implications regarding the pre-main sequence dynamics of the sun are contained in the hypothesis of electrical heating if the contribution from radionuclides and gravitational accretion can be shown to be insufficient to account for the heating episode. Finally, some consequences of the mechanism applied to planets in the presence of an intense solar wind are considered.  相似文献

The giant planetary magnetospheres surrounding Jupiter and Saturn respond in quite different ways, compared to Earth, to changes in upstream solar wind conditions. Spacecraft have visited Jupiter and Saturn during both solar cycle minima and maxima. In this paper we explore the large-scale structure of the interplanetary magnetic field (IMF) upstream of Saturn and Jupiter as a function of solar cycle, deduced from solar wind observations by spacecraft and from models. We show the distributions of solar wind dynamic pressure and IMF azimuthal and meridional angles over the changing solar cycle conditions, detailing how they compare to Parker predictions and to our general understanding of expected heliospheric structure at 5 and 9 AU. We explore how Jupiter’s and Saturn’s magnetospheric dynamics respond to varying solar wind driving over a solar cycle under varying Mach number regimes, and consider how changing dayside coupling can have a direct effect on the nightside magnetospheric response. We also address how solar UV flux variability over a solar cycle influences the plasma and neutral tori in the inner magnetospheres of Jupiter and Saturn, and estimate the solar cycle effects on internally driven magnetospheric dynamics. We conclude by commenting on the effects of the solar cycle in the release of heavy ion plasma into the heliosphere, ultimately derived from the moons of Jupiter and Saturn.  相似文献

The magnetic field of Mercury and the structure and dynamics of Mercury's magnetosphere, which will be studied by the spacecraft orbiting Mercury, are strongly influenced by the interaction of the solar wind with Mercury. In order to understand the internal magnetic field, it will be necessary to correct the observations of the external field for the distortions produced by the solar wind. Understanding of the solar wind interaction with Mercury is essential for understanding the structure and dynamics of the magnetosphere and phenomena such as magnetic storms. Helios 1 and 2 made a number of passes in the region traversed by the orbit of Mercury, and each pass provided a sample of the solar wind environment of Mercury. This paper reviews the plasma and magnetic field observations from Helios that provide a general basis for interpreting the observations of Mercury that will be made by orbiting spacecraft. The variables that govern the structure and dynamics of the magnetospheres of Mercury and Earth are approximately 5–10 times larger at Mercury than at Earth. Thus, the solar wind interaction with Mercury will be much stronger than the interaction with Earth. Moreover, the solar wind at Mercury is probably more variable than that at Earth. There is a clear need for measurements of the solar wind during the approach of spacecraft to Mercury and while they are in orbit around Mercury.  相似文献

The electron distribution functions from the solar corona to the solar wind are determined in this paper by considering the effects of the external forces, of Coulomb collisions and of the wave – particle resonant interactions in the plasma wave turbulence. The electrons are assumed to be interacting with right-handed polarized waves in the whistler regime. The acceleration of electrons in the solar wind seems to be mainly due to the electrostatic potential. Wave turbulence determines the electron pitch-angle diffusion and some characteristics of the velocity distribution function (VDF) such as suprathermal tails. The role of parallel whistlers can also be extended to small altitudes in the solar wind (the acceleration region of the outer corona), where they may explain the energization and the presence of suprathermal electrons.  相似文献

The numerical simulations of the model equation governing the nonlinear evolution of kinetic Alfvén wave (KAW) in solar wind plasmas are performed. The nonlinear dynamical equation of KAW satisfies the modified nonlinear Schrödinger MNLS equation when the ponderomotive nonlinearity is incorporated in the KAW dynamics. The effect of Landau damping is taken into account in the KAW dynamics. The coherent (in the absence of Landau damping) and damped (with Landau damping) localized structures of pump KAW as a consequence of ponderomotive nonlinearity have been studied in the solar wind at 1 AU. A weak whistler signal propagating in these localized structures is amplified which leads to the development of its own coherent and damped localized structures. Magnetic field (KAW) and electric field (whistler wave) power spectra and their spectral indices are calculated. Our results reveal the change in spectral index because of the damping effect which has good agreement with the observations. These damped structures and steeper spectra may be one of the reasons responsible for the plasma heating and particles acceleration in solar wind.  相似文献

We develop a physical model for the evolution of regoliths on small bodies and apply it to the asteroids and meteorite parent bodies. The model considers global deposition of that fraction of cratering ejecta that is not lost to space. It follows the build up of regolith on a typical region, removed from the larger craters which are the source of most regolith blankets. Later in the evolution, larger craters saturate the surface and are incorporated into the typical region; their net ejection of materials to space causes the elevation of the typical region to decrease and once-buried regolith becomes susceptible to ejection or gardening. The model is applied to cases of both strong, cohesive bodies and to bodies of weak, unconsolidated materials. Evolution of regolith depths and gardening rates are followed until a sufficiently large impact occurs that fractures the entire asteroid. (Larger asteroids are not dispersed, however, and evolve mergaregoliths from multiple generations of surficial regoliths mixed into their interiors.) We find that large, strong asteroids generate surficial regoliths of a few kilometers depth while strong asteroids smaller than 10-km diameter generate negligible regoliths. Our model does not treat large, weak asteroids, because their cratering ejecta fail to surround such bodies; regolith evolution is probably similar to that of the Moon. Small, weak asteroids of 1- to 10-km diameter generate centimeter- to meter-scale regoliths. In all cases studied, blanketing rates exceed excavation rates, so asteroid regoliths are rarely, if ever, gardened and should be very immature measured by lunar standards. They should exhibit many of the characteristics of the brecciated, gas-rich meteorites; intact foreign clasts, relatively low-exposure durations to galactic and solar cosmic rays low solar gas contents, minimal evidence for vitrification and agglutinate formation, etc. Both large, strong asteroids and small, weak ones provide regolith environments compatible with those inferred for the parent bodies of brecciated meteorites. But from volumetric calculations, we conclude that most brecciated meteorites formed on the surfaces of, and were recycled through the interiors of, parent bodies at least several tens of kilometers in diameter. The implications of our regolith model are consistent with properties inferred for asteroid regoliths from a variety of astronomical measurements of asteroids, although such data do not constrain regolith properties nearly as strongly as meteoritical evidence Our picture of substantial asteroidal regoliths produced predominantly by blanketing differs from earlier hypotheses that asteroidal regoliths might be thin or absent and that short surface exposure of asteroidal materials is due chiefly to erosion rather than blanketing.  相似文献

We present observations of what may be the inner region of a lunar mini-magnetosphere. If so, these likely represent the first such observations. Previous studies of solar wind interaction with lunar crustal magnetic fields found increased particle fluxes associated with magnetic amplifications, suggesting a shock/sheath region. The central density cavity expected in the inner mini-magnetosphere (if analogous to other planetary magnetospheres) has proven elusive. We now present Lunar Prospector fly-throughs of a density cavity near a strong crustal magnetic source in the solar wind, and compare these unique observations with typical orbits in the solar wind and wake. We observed the density cavity on two consecutive orbits on July 14, 1999 with optimal viewing geometry, downstream from one of the strongest lunar crustal sources (an anomaly centered at 235E, 20S), during very unusual solar wind conditions. We found no other similar features in the solar wind in 7 months of low-altitude orbits, suggesting that fully formed lunar mini-magnetospheres are rare and/or difficult to observe from orbit.  相似文献

Abstract— The main asteroid belt has lost >99.9% of its solid mass since the time at which the planets were forming, according to models for the protoplanetary nebula. Here we show that the primordial asteroid belt could have been cleared efficiently if much of the original mass accreted to form planetsized bodies, which were capable of perturbing one another into unstable orbits. We provide results from 25 N‐body integrations of up to 200 planets in the asteroid belt, with individual masses in the range 0.017–0.33 Earth masses. In the simulations, these bodies undergo repeated close encounters which scatter one another into unstable resonances with the giant planets, leading to collision with the Sun or ejection from the solar system. In response, the giant planets' orbits migrate radially and become more circular. This reduces the size of the main‐belt resonances and the clearing rate, although clearing continues. If ~3 Earth masses of material was removed from the belt this way, Jupiter and Saturn would initially have had orbital eccentricities almost twice their current values. Such orbits would have made Jupiter and Saturn 10–100x more effective at clearing material from the belt than they are on their current orbits. The time required to remove 90% of the initial mass from the belt depends sensitively on the giant planets' orbits, and weakly on the masses of the asteroidal planets. 18 of the 25 simulations end with no planets left in the belt, and the clearing takes up to several hundred million years. Typically, the last one or two asteroidal planets are removed by interactions with planets in the terrestrial region  相似文献

Imaging of low-energy neutral atoms (LENAs) in the vicinity of the Moon can provide wide knowledge of the Moon from the viewpoint of plasma physics and planetary physics. At the surface of the Moon, neutral atoms are mainly generated by photon-stimulated desorption, micrometeorite vaporization and sputtering by solar wind protons. LENAs, the energetic neutral atoms with energy range of 10-500 eV, are mainly created by sputtering of solar wind particles. We have made quantitative estimates of sputtered LENAs from the Moon surface. The results indicate that LENAs can be detected by a realistic instrument and that the measurement will provide the global element maps of sputtered particles, which substantially reflect the surface composition, and the magnetic anomalies. We have also found that LENAs around dark regions, such as the permanent shadow inside craters in the pole region, can be imaged. This is because the solar wind ions can penetrate shaded regions due to their finite gyro-radius and the pressure gradient between the solar wind and the wake region. LENAs also extend our knowledge about the magnetic anomalies and associated mini-magnetosphere systems, which are the smallest magnetospheres as far as one knows. It is thought that no LENAs are generated from mini-magnetosphere regions because no solar wind may penetrate inside them. Imaging such void areas of LENAs will provide another map of lunar magnetic anomalies.  相似文献

Solar wind interactions with planetary bodies without intrinsic magnetic fields depend to a large extent on the electrical conductivities of the objects in question. If the combined (i.e., ionospheric and interior) electrical conductivities are large, as in the case of Venus, the solar wind interaction is strong due to the generation of a large electrical current flow. It is suggested here that a similar interaction may occur at some asteroids, if their interior conductivity can be approximated by the conductivities of carbonaceous or iron-bearing meteorites. This interaction, in turn, can be used as a tool for remote sensing of the asteroidal interior properties in a spacecraft mission to asteroids.  相似文献

A new process of the energy accumulation in icy bodies (e.g., planetary satellites, cometary nuclei) is advanced which is applicable for space conditions: namely, the volumetric electrolysis of the ice containing foreign inclusions. The electrolysis takes place when the electric current, generated by virtue of the body's movement in the external magnetic field (planetary magnetospheres, the solar wind field, etc.) flows through the body. The cosmogonical concept which treats the Sun-Jupiter system as a limiting case of a close binary star, together with the known data on mass, composition and space distribution of asteroids, allows one to assume the initial existence between Mars and Jupiter of a Moon-like planet enriched with ices and allied by its parameters to the Galilean satellites (mainly Ganymede and Callisto). If this planet was affected by the ancient solar wind with during 109 yr, it could have accumulated the energy sufficient for its explosion. The process considered seems able to explain, from a unified point of view, a large number of phenomena — such as the burst activity of comets, a considerable hydrogen excess in their tails, a noticeable long-period comet perihelia orientation toward the solar apex, the existence of asteroidal families and the separation of asteroids by their chemical composition into two main groups, the Tunguska event, etc.  相似文献

Taff (1973) has concluded that asteroidal collisions rates are much lower than those found by previous authors. His calculations are found to be in error as a consequence of inclusion of an extraneous and incorrect factor of ~10?5. The assumption of molecular chaos in the asteroid belt, while not strictly correct, is not an important source of error in calculations of asteroidal collision rates.  相似文献

The current-driven electrostatic solitons and shocks are investigated in flowing plasmas having stationary dust and non-Maxwellian electrons. The propagation of solar wind parallel to the external magnetic field in the boundary regions of dusty magnetospheres of planets can give rise to drift type unstable electrostatic waves and nonlinear structures even if density is homogeneous. These waves can be produced in laboratory plasma experiments as well. Here the theoretical model is applied to Saturn’s magnetosphere.  相似文献

Micrometeorite bombardment and irradiation by solar wind and cosmic ions cause variations in the optical properties of the small Solar System bodies surface materials. These space weathering processes are reasonably well understood for the Moon and S-type asteroids. The research is based on laboratory experiments performed by several groups on meteorites and minor bodies surface analogues, whose results have been applied to the spectral modeling and interpretation of observations from large surveys and space missions. Recent results from young asteroidal families, and the relation between spectral slopes and dynamical properties, have stressed the role of the solar wind exposure timescale. Space weathering processes remain poorly investigated in the case of other types of asteroids, and they are still unclear in the case of outer Solar System bodies, due to a strong dependence of the weathering process on the original composition.  相似文献
