Recent R-matrix calculations of electron impact excitation rates in Mg-like Fe  xv are used to derive theoretical emission-line ratios involving transitions in the 243–418 Å  wavelength range. A comparison of these with a data set of solar active region, subflare and off-limb spectra, obtained during rocket flights by the Solar Extreme-Ultraviolet Research Telescope and Spectrograph (SERTS), reveals generally very good agreement between theory and observation, indicating that most of the Fe  xv emission lines may be employed with confidence as electron density diagnostics. In particular, the 312.55-Å  line of Fe  xv is not significantly blended with a Co  xvii transition in active region spectra, as suggested previously, although the latter does make a major contribution in the subflare observations. Most of the Fe  xv transitions which are blended have had the species responsible clearly identified, although there remain a few instances where this has not been possible. We briefly address the long-standing discrepancy between theory and experiment for the intensity ratio of the  3s2 1S–3s3p 3P1  intercombination line at 417.25 Å  to the  3s2 1S–3s3p 1P  resonance transition at 284.16 Å.  相似文献

We report observations of the dwarf star ε Eri (K2 V) made with the Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (STIS) on the Hubble Space Telescope . The high sensitivity of the STIS instrument has allowed us to detect the magnetic dipole transitions of Fe  xii at 1242.00 and 1349.38 Å for the first time in a star other than the Sun. The width of the stronger line at 1242.00 Å has also been measured; such measurements are not possible for the permitted lines of Fe  xii in the extreme-ultraviolet. To within the accuracy of the measurements, the N  v and the Fe  xii lines occur at their rest wavelengths. Electron densities and linewidths have been measured from other transition region lines. Together, these can be used to investigate the non-thermal energy flux in the lower and upper transition regions, which is useful in constraining possible heating processes. The Fe  xii lines are also present in archival STIS spectra of other G/K-type dwarfs.  相似文献

New R -matrix calculations of electron impact excitation rates for transitions among the 2s22p, 2s2p2 and 2p3 levels of Si  x are presented. These data are subsequently used, in conjunction with recent estimates for proton excitation rates, to derive theoretical electron density sensitive emission-line ratios involving transitions in the ∼253–356 Å wavelength range. A comparision of these with observations of a solar active region and subflare, obtained during the 1989 flight of the Solar EUV Rocket Telescope and Spectrograph ( SERTS ), reveals that the electron densities determined from most of the Si  x line ratios are consistent with one another for both solar features. In addition, the derived densities are also in good agreement with the values of N e estimated from diagnostic lines in other species formed at similar electron temperatures to Si  x , such as Fe  xii and Fe  xiii . These results provide observational support for the general accuracy of the adopted atomic data, and hence line ratio calculations, employed in the present analysis. However, we find that the Si  x 256.32-Å line is blended with the He  ii transition at the same wavelength, while the feature at 292.25 Å is not due to Si  x , but currently remains unidentified. The intensity of the 253.81-Å line in the SERTS active region spectrum is about a factor of 3 larger than expected from theory, but the reason for this is unclear, and requires additional observations to explain the discrepancy.  相似文献

Recent fully relativistic calculations of radiative rates and electron impact excitation cross-sections for Fe  xiii are used to generate emission-line ratios involving 3s23p2–3s3p3 and 3s23p2–3s23p3d transitions in the 170–225 and 235–450 Å wavelength ranges covered by the Solar Extreme-Ultraviolet Research Telescope and Spectrograph (SERTS). A comparison of these line ratios with SERTS active region observations from rocket flights in 1989 and 1995 reveals generally very good agreement between theory and experiment. Several new Fe  xiii emission features are identified, at wavelengths of 203.79, 259.94, 288.56 and 290.81 Å. However, major discrepancies between theory and observation remain for several Fe  xiii transitions, as previously found by Landi and others, which cannot be explained by blending. Errors in the adopted atomic data appear to be the most likely explanation, in particular for transitions which have 3s23p3d 1D2 as their upper level. The most useful Fe  xiii electron-density diagnostics in the SERTS spectral regions are assessed, in terms of the line pairs involved being (i) apparently free of atomic physics problems and blends, (ii) close in wavelength to reduce the effects of possible errors in the instrumental intensity calibration, and (iii) very sensitive to changes in N e over the range  108–1011 cm−3  . It is concluded that the ratios which best satisfy these conditions are 200.03/202.04 and 203.17/202.04 for the 170–225 Å wavelength region, and 348.18/320.80, 348.18/368.16, 359.64/348.18 and 359.83/368.16 for 235–450 Å.  相似文献

A multiwavelength photometric analysis was performed in order to study the sub-structure of a sunspot light bridge in the photosphere and the chromosphere. Active region NOAA 8350 was observed on 1998 October 8. The data consist of a 100 min time series of 2D spectral scans of the lines Fe  i 5576 Å, Hα 6563 Å, Fe  i 6302.5 Å, and continuum images at 5571 Å. We recorded line-of-sight magnetograms in 6302.5 Å. The observations were taken at the Dunn Solar Telescope at US National Solar Observatory, Sacramento Peak. We find evidence for plasma ejection from a light bridge followed by Ellerman bombs. Magnetograms of the same region reveal opposite polarity in light bridge with respect to the umbra. These facts support the notion that low-altitude magnetic reconnection can result in the magnetic cancellation as observed in the photosphere.  相似文献

New fully relativistic calculations of radiative rates and electron impact excitation cross-sections for Fe  xvi are used to determine theoretical emission-line ratios applicable to the 251–361 and 32–77 Å portions of the extreme-ultraviolet (EUV) and soft X-ray spectral regions, respectively. A comparison of the EUV results with observations from the Solar Extreme-Ultraviolet Research Telescope and Spectrograph (SERTS) reveals excellent agreement between theory and experiment. However, for emission lines in the 32–49 Å portion of the soft X-ray spectral region, there are large discrepancies between theory and measurement for both a solar flare spectrum obtained with the X-Ray Spectrometer/Spectrograph Telescope (XSST) and for observations of Capella from the Low-Energy Transmission Grating Spectrometer (LETGS) on the Chandra X-ray Observatory . These are probably due to blending in the solar flare and Capella data from both first-order lines and from shorter wavelength transitions detected in second and third order. By contrast, there is very good agreement between our theoretical results and the XSST and LETGS observations in the 50–77 Å wavelength range, contrary to previous results. In particular, there is no evidence that the Fe  xvi emission from the XSST flare arises from plasma at a much higher temperature than that expected for Fe  xvi in ionization equilibrium, as suggested by earlier work.  相似文献

The Solar Eclipse Corona Imaging System (SECIS) was used to record high-cadence observations of the solar corona during the total solar eclipse of 1999 August 11. During the 2 min 23.5 s of totality, 6364 images were recorded simultaneously in each of the two channels: a white light channel, and the Fe  xiv (5303 Å) 'green line' channel ( T ∼2 MK) . Here we report initial results from the SECIS experiment, including the discovery of a 6-s intensity oscillation in an active region coronal loop.  相似文献

We have defined a sample of 63 active galactic nuclei with strong forbidden high-ionization line (FHIL) emission. These lines, with ionization potentials  ≳100  eV, respond to a portion of the spectrum that is often difficult to observe directly, thereby providing constraints on the extreme ultraviolet-soft X-ray continuum. The sources are selected from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) on the basis of their [Fe  x ]λ6374 Å emission, yielding one of the largest and the most homogeneous samples of FHIL-emitting galaxies. We fit a sequence of models to both FHILs ([Fe  xi ], [Fe  x ] and [Fe  vii ]) and lower ionization emission lines ([O  iii ], [O  i ],  Hα  , [N  ii ], [S  ii ]) in the SDSS spectra. These data are combined with X-ray measurements from the ROSAT satellite, which are available for half of the sample. The correlations between these parameters are discussed for both the overall sample and subsets defined by spectroscopic classifications. The primary results are evidence that (1) the [Fe  x ] and [Fe  xi ] lines are photoionized and their strength is proportional to the continuum flux around 250 eV, (2) the FHIL-emitting clouds form a stratified outflow in which the [Fe  x ] and [Fe  xi ] source regions extend sufficiently close to the broad-line region that they are partially obscured in Seyfert 2s, whereas the [Fe  vii ] source region is more extended and is unaffected by obscuration, (3) narrow-lined Seyfert 1s (NLS1s) tend to have the strongest [Fe  x ] flux (relative to lower ionization lines) and (4) the most extreme [Fe  x ] ratios (such as [Fe  x ]/[O  iii ] or [Fe  x ]/[Fe  vii ]) are found in the NLS1s with the narrowest broad lines and appear to be an optical-band indication of objects with strong X-ray soft excesses.  相似文献

X-ray and extreme-ultraviolet emission from the coronae of Capella   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
The primary objective of this work is the analysis and interpretation of coronal observations of Capella obtained in 1999 September with the High Energy Transmission Grating Spectrometer on the Chandra X-ray Observatory and the Extreme Ultraviolet Explorer ( EUVE ). He-like lines of O (O  vii ) are used to derive a density of 1.7×1010 cm−3 for the coronae of the binary, consistent with the upper limits derived from Fe  xxi , Ne  ix and Mg  xi line ratios. Previous estimates of the electron density based on Fe  xxi should be considered as upper limits. We construct emission measure distributions and compare the theoretical and observed spectra to conclude that the coronal material has a temperature distribution that peaks around 4–6 MK , implying that the coronae of Capella were significantly cooler than in the previous years. In addition, we present an extended line list with over 100 features in the 5–24 Å wavelength range, and find that the X-ray spectrum is very similar to that of a solar flare observed with SMM . The observed to theoretical Fe  xvii 15.012-Å line intensity reveals that opacity has no significant effect on the line flux. We derive an upper limit to the optical depth, which we combine with the electron density to derive an upper limit of 3000 km for the size of the Fe  xvii emitting region. In the same context, we use the Si  iv transition region lines of Capella from HST /Goddard High-Resolution Spectrometer observations to show that opacity can be significant at T =105 K , and derive a path-length of ≈75 km for the transition region. Both the coronal and transition region observations are consistent with very small emitting regions, which could be explained by small loops over the stellar surfaces.  相似文献

Recent R -matrix calculations of electron impact excitation rates for transitions among the 2s22p2, 2s2p3 and 2p4 levels of Fe  xxi are used to derive theoretical electron density ( N e) sensitive emission-line ratios involving 2s22p2–2s2p3 transitions in the ∼98–146Å wavelength range. A comparison of these with observations from the PLT tokamak plasma, for which the electron density has been independently determined, reveals generally very good agreement between theory and experiment, and in some instances removes discrepancies found previously. The observed Fe  xxi ratios for a solar flare, obtained with the OSO–5 satellite, imply electron densities which are consistent, with discrepancies that do not exceed 0.2 dex. In addition, the derived values of N e are similar to those estimated for the high-temperature regions of other solar flares. The good agreement between theory and observation, in particular for the tokamak spectra, provides experimental support for the accuracy of the present line-ratio calculations, and hence for the atomic data on which they are based.  相似文献

We present spectra of six luminous quasars at   z ∼ 2  , covering rest wavelengths 1600−3200 Å. The fluxes of the UV Fe  ii emission lines and Mg  ii λ2798 doublet, the line widths of Mg  ii and the 3000 Å luminosity were obtained from the spectra. These quantities were compared with those of low-redshift quasars at   z = 0.06–0.55  studied by Tsuzuki et al. In a plot of the Fe  ii (UV)/Mg  ii flux ratio as a function of the central black hole mass, Fe  ii (UV)/Mg  ii in our   z ∼ 2  quasars is systematically greater than in the low-redshift quasars. We confirmed that luminosity is not responsible for this excess. It is unclear whether this excess is caused by rich Fe abundance at   z ∼ 2  over low-redshift or by non-abundance effects such as high gas density, strong radiation field and high microturbulent velocity.  相似文献

We have carried out a spectroscopic survey of 750 sources that are strong 25-μm emitters from the IRAS Faint Source data base. Many of these sources are previously unknown active galactic nuclei including new IRAS quasars, three of which we describe here: F21382−2659, Z06367−6845 and Z05558−5008. They are all radio and X-ray quiet, and compared to the known IRAS quasars they have similar 25-μm luminosities, L (25 μm), but lower values of L (25 μm)/ L ( B ). Their F (25 μm)/ F (60 μm) IRAS colours lie in the range 0.33 to 1.08, indicating the presence of relatively warm dust, presumably in a dusty torus surrounding the central source, and with temperatures similar to those of the known IRAS quasars. The quasar with the warmest dust, F21382−2659, exhibits broad (full width at half-maximum ∼4000 km s−1) asymmetric Balmer lines with H γ having an opposite asymmetry to the other broad lines; also H β (only) is double-peaked. Fe  ii is very weak in F21382−2659 but strong in the other two quasars, and the anticorrelation between Fe  ii and [O  iii ] holds as anticipated. Two of the quasars are unpolarized: although F21382−2659 is optically polarized (2.1 per cent at 4950 Å), we argue that this provides little insight into the orientation of its dust torus relative to the line of sight.  相似文献

The dense cores of X-ray emitting gaseous haloes of large elliptical galaxies with temperatures   kT ≲ 0.8  keV  show two prominent Fe  xvii emission features, which provide a sensitive diagnostic tool to measure the effects of resonant scattering. We present here high-resolution spectra of five bright nearby elliptical galaxies, obtained with the reflection grating spectrometers (RGS) on the XMM-Newton satellite. The spectra for the cores of four of the galaxies show the Fe  xvii line at 15.01 Å being suppressed by resonant scattering. The data for NGC 4636 in particular allow the effects of resonant scattering to be studied in detail and to prove that the 15.01 Å line is suppressed only in the dense core and not in the surrounding regions. Using deprojected density and temperature profiles for this galaxy obtained with the Chandra satellite, we model the radial intensity profiles of the strongest resonance lines, accounting for the effects of resonant scattering, for different values of the characteristic turbulent velocity. Comparing the model to the data, we find that the isotropic turbulent velocities on spatial scales smaller than ≈1 kpc are less than 100 km s−1 and the turbulent pressure support in the galaxy core is smaller than 5 per cent of the thermal pressure at the 90 per cent confidence level, and less than 20 per cent at 95 per cent confidence. Neglecting the effects of resonant scattering in spectral fitting of the inner 2 kpc core of NGC 4636 will lead to underestimates of the chemical abundances of Fe and O by ∼10–20 per cent.  相似文献

In an effort better to calibrate the supernova rate of starburst galaxies as determined from near-infrared [Fe  ii ] features, we report on a [Fe  ii ] λ 1.644 μm line-imaging survey of a sample of 42 optically selected supernova remnants (SNRs) in M33. A wide range of [Fe  ii ] luminosities are observed within our sample (from less than 6 to 695 L). Our data suggest that the bright [Fe  ii ] SNRs are entering the radiative phase and that the density of the local interstellar medium (ISM) largely controls the amount of [Fe  ii ] emission. We derive the following relation between the [Fe  ii ] λ 1.644 μm line luminosity of radiative SNRs and the electronic density of the post-shock gas, n e: L [Fe  ii ]     (cm−3). We also find a correlation in our data between L [Fe  ii ] and the metallicity of the shock-heated gas, but the physical interpretation of this result remains inconclusive, as our data also show a correlation between the metallicity and n e. The dramatically higher level of [Fe  ii ] emission from SNRs in the central regions of starburst galaxies is most likely due to their dense environments, although metallicity effects might also be important. The typical [Fe  ii ]-emitting lifetime of a SNR in the central regions of starburst galaxies is found to be of the order of 104 yr. On the basis of these results, we provide a new empirical relation allowing the determination of the current supernova rate of starburst galaxies from their integrated near-infrared [Fe  ii ] luminosity.  相似文献

An inspection of a GHRS/ HST spectrum of the symbiotic star RR Telescopii reveals the presence of the [Al  ii ] 3s21S – 3s3p 3P2 line at a vacuum wavelength of 2661.06±0.08 Å, 8.89±0.08 Å away from the Al  ii ] 3s21S – 3s3p 3P1 intercombination transition at 2669.95 Å, in good agreement with the theoretical prediction of Δ λ =8.80 Å. We also find that the Al  ii ] line profile is asymmetric, showing a strong low-density component with a weak high-density wing, redshifted by 30 km s−1, in agreement with the findings of Schild & Schmid, which were based on optical observations. Our measurement of the emission-line ratio R I (2661.06 Å)/ I (2669.95 Å)=0.027±0.003 implies log  N e=5.8±0.2, in good agreement with the densities found from other ions, such as Si  iii . These results provide strong evidence that we have detected the [Al  ii ] line, the first time (to our knowledge) that this feature has been reliably identified in an astrophysical or laboratory spectrum.  相似文献

We report the first infrared proper motion measurements of the HerbigHaro objects in OMC-1 using a 4-yr time baseline. The [Fe  ii ]-emitting bullets are moving of the order of 0.08 arcsec per year, or at about 170 km s1. The direction of motion is similar to that inferred from their morphology. The proper motions of H2-emitting wakes behind the [Fe  ii ] bullets, and of newly found H2 bullets, are also measured. H2 bullets have smaller proper motion than [Fe  ii ] bullets, while H2 wakes with leading [Fe  ii ] bullets appear to move at similar speeds to their associated bullets. A few instances of variability in the emission can be attributed to dense, stationary clumps in the ambient cloud being overrun, setting up a reverse-oriented bullet. Differential motion between [Fe  ii ] bullets and their trailing H2 wakes is not observed, suggesting that these are not separating, and also that they have reached a steady-state configuration over at least 100 yr. The most distant bullets have, on average, larger proper motions, but are not consistent with free expansion. Nevertheless, an impulsive, or short-lived (<<1000 yr), duration for their origin seems likely.  相似文献

We present an XMM–Newton observation of the Seyfert–LINER (low-ionization nuclear emission-line region) galaxy NGC 7213. The RGS soft X-ray spectrum is well fitted with a power law plus soft X-ray collisionally ionized thermal plasma  ( kT = 0.18+0.03−0.01 keV)  . We confirm the presence of Fe  i , Fe  xxv and Fe  xxvi Kα emission in the EPIC spectrum and set tighter constraints on their equivalent widths of  82+10−13, 24+9−11  and 24+10−13 eV, respectively. We compare the observed properties together with the inferred mass accretion rate of NGC 7213 with those of other Seyfert and LINER galaxies. We find that NGC 7213 has intermediate X-ray spectral properties lying between those of the weak active galactic nucleus found in the LINER M81 and higher-luminosity Seyfert galaxies. There appears to be a continuous sequence of X-ray properties from the Galactic Centre through LINER galaxies to Seyferts, probably determined by the amount of material available for accretion in the central regions.  相似文献

Observations made at the quiet Sun-centre with the Coronal Diagnostic Spectrometer (CDS) and Solar Ultraviolet Measurements of Emitted Radiation (SUMER) instruments on the Solar and Heliospheric Observatory ( SOHO ) have shown that the intensities of the resonance lines of He  i and He  ii are significantly larger than predicted by emission measure distributions found from other transition region lines. The intensities of the helium lines are observed to be lower in coronal holes than in the quiet Sun. Any theory proposed to account for the behaviour of the helium lines must explain the observations of both the quiet Sun and coronal holes. We use observations made with SOHO to find the physical conditions in a polar coronal hole. The electron pressure is found using the C  iii 1175-Å and N  iii 991.5-Å lines, as the C  iii line at 977.0 Å becomes optically thick in some regions at high latitudes. The mean electron pressure is a factor of ≃2 lower than that at the quiet Sun-centre. The mean coronal electron temperature is     . The helium lines are enhanced with respect to other transition region lines but by factors which are ≃ 30 per cent smaller than at the quiet Sun-centre. The mean ratios of the intensities of the He  i 537.0- and 584.3-Å lines and of the He  i and He  ii 303.8-Å lines vary little with the type of region studied. These ratios are compared with those predicted by models of the transition region, taking into account the radiative transfer in the helium lines. No significant variation is found in the relative abundances of carbon and silicon.  相似文献

The influence of magnetic fields on the energy level populations of atoms is firstly studied by analysing the Stokes profiles of Fe  i 6302.5 forming in the solar magnetized atmosphere, with the aid of a departure factor defined to evaluate the deviation from the normal Boltzmann distribution without a magnetic field. This factor is directly related to the ratio of line-source function to the continuum one. The relationship between the departure and the magnetic field reveals an effect that the magnetic field induces an exponential increase in the level population of the lower level of Fe  i 6302.5 (Landé factor   g = 2.5  ) with the field strength. This indicates that the magnetic field can cause the redistribution of populations of those levels whose Landé factors are non-zero. Therefore, this effect should be included in the calculation of the statistical equilibrium. Secondly, an experiment utilizing the Hg5461 line in the laboratory on the Earth is carried out to reveal that the exponential relation is independent of variations in temperature, and the excitation is completely magneto-induced. Finally, the exponential relation is explained by taking account of the magnetic energy in the Boltzmann distribution.  相似文献

We report on the analysis of the photometric and spectroscopic properties of a sample of 29 low-redshift  ( z < 0.6)  QSOs for which both Hubble Space Telescope ( HST ) WFPC2 images and ultraviolet HST   FOS spectra are available. For each object we measure the R -band absolute magnitude of the host galaxy, the C  iv (1550 Å) linewidth and the 1350 Å continuum luminosity. From these quantities we can estimate the black hole (BH) mass through the   M BH– L bulge  relation for inactive galaxies, and from the virial method based on the kinematics of the regions emitting the broad-lines. The comparison of the masses derived from the two methods yields information on the geometry of the gas emitting regions bound to the massive BH. The cumulative distribution of the linewidths is consistent with that produced by matter laying in planes with inclinations uniformly distributed between ∼10° and ∼50°, which corresponds to a geometrical factor   f ∼ 1.3  . Our results are compared with those of the literature and discussed within the unified model of active galactic nuclei.  相似文献
