The flare source of thermal X-rays above a magnetic arch in the corona arises from the dissipation of the magnetic energy of the current sheet formed at the reconnection of magnetic-field lines. The sources of hard X-rays emitted from the footpoints of the magnetic arch are beams of electrons accelerated in field-aligned currents induced by the Hall electric field generated in the current sheet. Both the hard X-rays detected above the active region and the type III radio emission are radiated by electrons accelerated in the field-aligned currents induced by Alfven waves. The solar cosmic rays are emitted promptly at the instant of the flare. It is important that the Lorentz electric field accelerates protons along the singular magnetic X line. The relativistic protons propagate along the interplanetary magnetic field. These protons have exponential spectra, typical for acceleration occurring in current sheets. A mechanism that is relevant for the generation of delayed cosmic rays, which demonstrate significant anisotropy and a power-law spectrum with γ ∼5, is also discussed.  相似文献

Analysis of the relativistic proton spectra of solar flares occurring in the 23rd solar activity cycle derived from data of a worldwide neutron monitor network and numerical modeling both provide evidence for the acceleration of charged particles by an electric field that arises in coronal current sheets during reconnection. The method used to obtain the spectra is based on simulating the response of a neutron monitor to an anisotropic flux of relativistic solar protons with specified parameters and determining the characteristics of the primary relativistic solar protons by fitting model responses to the observations. Studies of the dynamics of the energy spectra distinguish two populations of relativistic protons in solar cosmic-ray events: the so-called fast component, which arrives at the flux front of the solar cosmic rays, followed by the delayed slow component. The fast component is characterized by strong anisotropy and an exponential energy spectrum, in agreement with the spectrum yielded by mathematical modeling of particle acceleration by an electric field directed along the X line of the magnetic field. The slow component, whose propagation is probably diffusive, has a power-law spectrum.  相似文献

Relations enabling estimation of the limiting brightness temperature of synchrotron radiation subject to self-absorption and inverse Compton scattering are presented for the case of relativistic electrons (positrons) and protons. Analogous expressions are presented for relativistic particles moving along curved magnetic lines of force (curvature radiation) and coherent radiation by relativistic particles. These relations can be used to determine the brightness temperatures expected for the central regions of active galactic nuclei, neutron stars, and other objects that produce relativistic particles. Radiation by relativistic protons yields higher intensities, and could be a source of the highest-energy cosmic rays.  相似文献

The basis is laid out for a theory relating various phenomena in the solar atmosphere, including localized concentrations of magnetic field at the bases of coronal magnetic arches, chromospheric spicules, twisted coronal magnetic flux tubes, and flows of energy carried by Alfvén waves propagating upward into the corona. The structure of photospheric currents localized in the vicinity of supergranule boundaries and excited by convective motions is studied. These currents exist primarily in a “dynamo layer” of sharply enhanced transverse conductivity, which forms in the weakly ionized thermal photospheric plasma located in the solar gravitational field. The motions of the electrons and ions in this layer have appreciably different characters: the ions are collisionly driven by the flows of neutral atoms, while the electrons drift in the crossed electric and magnetic fields. The electric field supporting the current arises due to the polarization of the electrons and ions. This field also gives rise to Alfvén perturbations that propagate upward into the corona, together with their associated longitudinal currents. The character of this “loading” makes the system of fields and currents uniquely defined. Moreover, the momentum flux carried by these Alfvén waves should be transferred to the cool chromospheric gas, facilitating the vertical ejection of this gas in the form of spicules, as was first proposed in 1992 by Haerendel.  相似文献

New data for the energy and location of the hard-emission centers of a solar flare agree with an electrodynamic model of a solar flare based on the idea of the accumulation of free magnetic energy in the field of a current sheet. Three-dimensional MHD simulations are used to show that the energy stored in the preflare magnetic field of the current sheet is sufficient for the development of a flare and a coronal mass ejection. The flare and coronal mass ejection result from the explosive decay of the current sheet. The position of the brightness-temperature maximum of the radio emission during the flare coincides with the maximum of the current in the current sheet. The exponential spectrum of relativistic protons generated during the flare is consistent with acceleration by the electric field during the current-sheet decay.  相似文献

The influence of various types of nonthermal electron and proton distributions and photoionization on the charge state of energetic heavy elements moving in a plasma is investigated. The mean charges of Mg, Si, and Fe are calculated for a bi-Maxwellian distribution of the background electrons and for electron and neutral beams with power-law energy distributions. An anomalously high density of the nonthermal component is required to obtain substantial deviations of the equilibrium mean charges of these elements (a few charge units) from the case when they interact with a purely Maxwellian plasma. In this context, the mean charges for O, Ne, Mg, Si, and Fe ions are also calculated for a model with charge-consistent acceleration. The results indicate that photoionization does not significantly influence the charge state of solar cosmic rays if the parameters of the plasma are those characteristic of impulsive solar events.  相似文献

We review high spatial resolution microwave observations of solar active regions, coronal loops and flares. Observations of preflare active regions are presented; in particular we discuss the interpretations of reversal of polarization at the flare site and the role of newly emerging flux in triggering the onset of flares. We discuss the spatial locations of microwave burst emitting regions; loops or arcades of loops appear to be the sites of flare energy release in microwave bursts. We provide direct observational evidence of magnetic reconnection as the primary cause of acceleration of electrons in microwave bursts.  相似文献

The acceleration of particles by solar flares with extremely large proton fluxes whose energies exceed 100 MeV is considered. Most importantly, the location of the source of such acceleration in the flare of July 14, 2000, is determined assuming that the acceleration time coincides with the observed burst of hard line and continuous gamma-ray emission. The onset of this event corresponds to 10:19 UT, when data taken by the TRACE space observatory show that one of the flare ribbons reached a large sunspot in a group. The time interval for the development of the flare, 10:20–10:28 UT, is associated with the beginning of an increasing proton flux at the Earth. The region of efficient acceleration is estimated to be approximately two to three times higher than the height where the hard X-ray pulse usually originates (about 7000 km). The results are generalized for 28 powerful flares with extremely efficient acceleration of relativistic particles—in particular, for the well-studied events of June 15, 1991, and May 24, 1990—and are compared with the results of a statistical analysis of over 1100 increasing-proton-flux events. Efficient particle acceleration seems to be associated with the powerful impulsive episodes of the large flares analyzed. The results suggest that, along with sources of local (as in impulsive flares) and post-eruptive acceleration, there is an additional, very efficient, moderate-scale “accelerator” in tenuous regions with fairly strong magnetic fields and magnetic-field gradients.  相似文献

The ion composition of fluxes of charged particles in interplanetary space with energies ∼0.03–10 MeV/nucleon are studied during quiet periods in the 23rd solar-activity cycle using data from the ACE spacecraft. Apart from the activity minimum, the Fe/O ratio during such periods corresponds to either the relative abundances of ions in particle fluxes accelerated in solar flares or the mean abundances of elements in the solar corona. At the cycle minimum, this ratio takes on values characteristic for the solar wind. These results indicate that the background fluxes of low-energy particles in the phases of the growth, maximum, and decay of the solar cycle include significant contributions from both coronal particles accelerated to suprathermal energies and particles accelerated in small impulsive solar flares. The particle fluxes from such flares are distinguished by an enhanced abundance of iron ions.  相似文献

The formation of cyclotron maser emission lines in a non-uniform (regular or random) magnetic field is studied. In the presence of sufficiently small inhomogeneity, the line shape can be described by a broadened Gaussian profile. In the case of stronger inhomogeneity, the initial Gaussian profile splits into two Gaussian components, which could be observationally perceived as “harmonics.” A relation between the distribution of local magnetic trap sizes and the distribution of the spectral widths of solar radio spikes is derived. Possible applications of the results to the interpretation of solar radio spikes and related problems are discussed.  相似文献

A charge-consistent numerical model for the joint (regular and stochastic) acceleration of iron by a spherical shock wave propagating in the solar corona is proposed. Large-scale irregularities of the plasma density and the nonisothermal injection of ions are taken into account. For the case of iron, the energy dependence of the mean charge qFe(E) is determined by the relationships between the characteristic acceleration time, the charge-variation time for the accelerated ions, and the time for their trapping in regions of high plasma density. Due to the global inhomogeneity of the medium, these relationships depend on the shock speed. Our calculations indicate that photoionization by soft X-rays from flare regions can substantially change the charge states of heavy ions only in the most powerful solar events (both impulsive and gradual).  相似文献

An analysis of the dynamics of the electron temperature of the solar atmosphere in regions where solar flares appear is presented. The temperatures are estimated from the emission in spectral lines of ions with various degrees of ionization. The emission of ionized helium and highly ionized iron was used. Images of preflare states and of flares from the archive of the American SDO spacecraft are analyzed. A solar flare is usually preceded by the registration of a bright glowing structure above the action region, with a temperature exceeding that of the corona. This preflare structure (~1010 cm) is identified with the development of a system of currents, which, according to numerical simulations, is responsible for the accumulation of energy above the active region before the flare. After several tens of hours of a slow increase in the brightness of the preflare glow in the 94 Å iron (FeXVIII) line, the emission in the 193 Å line of FeXXIV increases sharply, indicating a flare-like growth of the temperature up to at least 20 MK. This growth of the emission coincides with the onset of the solar flare. The observed dynamics of the emission in spectral lines of highly ionized ions is consistent with an electrodynamic model of a solar flare based on the accumulation of magnetic energy in a current sheet above the active region and the explosive release of the stored energy. Studies of mechanisms for solar flares are of special importance in connection with the discovery of solar cosmic rays. Information from the worldwide network of neutron monitors and from the GOES spacecraft has made it possible to firmly state that the source of solar rays is solar flares, not shocks generated by such flares. It cannot be ruled out that a similar mechanism, not shocks, is also responsible for the acceleration of cosmic rays in the Galaxy.  相似文献

Solar proton events (SPEs) of 1989–1992 accompanied by ground-level enhancements of the cosmic-ray intensity are analyzed. A diffusive-propagation model can well approximate the solar proton intensity at energies of 84–200 MeV measured on board the GOES-7 satellite during the first 15–20 hours of the development of an SPE, assuming several episodes of proton injection into interplanetary space over some hours. The detection of π0-decay gamma-ray emission during the flares of June 11 and 15, 1991 on board the CGRO and GAMMA-1 space observatories is the sole experimental evidence for the existence of protons with energies >100 MeV near the Sun over such extended times. The number of protons in the source is estimated for various times based on the propagation model. Moreover, this value is in qualitative and quantitative agreement with the number of protons required to generate the observed gamma-ray emission for the June 15, 1991 event (and in qualitative agreement for the June 11, 1991 event). This provides evidence that processes of prolonged trapping and/or acceleration of protons in coronal structures may be possible in other such events.  相似文献

Data from the ULEIS instrument aboard the ACE spacecraft are used to study the energy spectra of 3He and 4He ions produced during periods of the quiet Sun in the 23rd solar cycle in the energy range ~0.08–2 MeV/nucleon. Differences in the spectra and 3He/4He relative abundances for three groups of quiet periods dominated by different sources of ions are demonstrated: weak impulsive solar flares, particles of the solar corona, and solar wind particles accelerated to energies of several MeV/nucleon.  相似文献

An approximate method for calculating the returning positron flux in the polar-cap regions of a radio pulsar is proposed. The pulsar is considered in the Goldreich-Julian model for a regime of free-electron emission from the neutron-star surface in the region of open lines of the dipolar magnetic field. Calculations have been done for the case when the dipolar magnetic moment is aligned with the star's rotational axis. The acceleration of primary electrons is assumed to occur near the neutron-star surface on scales comparable to the transverse radius of the tube of open field lines. The generation of electron-positron pairs by curvature radiation of the primary electrons is taken into account. A considerable contribution to the returning flux is made by the region where the electric field is screened by the electron-positron plasma.  相似文献

Variations in the flux of Jovian electrons near the Earth in two synodic cycles of the Earth–Jupiter system, in 1974–1975 and 2007–2008, are considered. In the 1974–1975 cycle, Jovian electrons were observed by IMP-8 during 13 successive solar rotations; electrons were observed by SOHO during 14 solar rotations during the 2007–2008 cycle. The fluxes of these electrons in each solar revolution experienced variations with a characteristic time scale of ~27 d , with the maximum flux near the middle of the rotation. The mean period of the variations does not coincide with the synodic period for the Sun–Earth system, equal to 27.3 d . The mean variation periods for the electron fluxes were 26.8 d in 1974–1975 and 26.1 d in 2007–2008. The detected variations are interpreted as reflecting variations in the structure of the solar wind speed and associated magnetic traps, the confinement time of the electrons in thesemagnetic traps, and the influence of the relative positions of the Earth and Jupiter in space.  相似文献

An expression for the intensity of synchrotron emission from a radio source (in the optically thin regime) in terms of the energy densities in the magnetic field and particles is obtained, based on a definition of a relativistic electron related to its rest energy. A relationship is obtained between the energy densities in particles Ee and the magnetic field EH for a physical system containing a magnetic field and relativistic electrons in a minimum-energy state. A method for estimating the Doppler factors of the relativistic electrons has been developed. This method does not requires that all radio sources have the same radiation energies (brightness temperatures): it is sufficient that the energies of the magnetic fields and relativistic particles in the source be approximately equal. The method yields Doppler-factor estimates with reasonably good accuracy, even when there are modest deviations from energy equipartition in the radio source, making it applicable to many radio sources. The method is used to estimate the Doppler factor of the radio jet in CTA 21.

A model for the nonradial motion of an eruptive prominence in the solar corona is proposed. Such motions, which can sometimes be inaccessible to observation, result in an apparent break in the causal link between eruptive prominences and coronal mass ejections. The global magnetic field of the Sun governs coronal plasma motions. The complex structure of this field can form prominence trajectories that differ considerably from a simple vertical rise (i.e., radial motion). A solar filament is modeled as a current-carrying ring or twisted toroidal magnetic rope in equilibrium with the coronal magnetic field. The global field is described using two spherical harmonics. A catastrophic violation of the filament equilibrium followed by its rapid acceleration—eruption—is possible in this nonlinear system. The numerical solution of the equations of motion corresponds well to the eruption pattern observed on December 14, 1997.  相似文献

The quantum motion of non-relativistic and relativistic electrons in the presence of constant magnetic fields at the surfaces of magnetic stars, magnetic white dwarfs, and pulsars is considered. The quantizing magnetic-field strengths for charged particles with specified energies are determined. The quantum motion of these particles in a plane perpendicular to the magnetic field is accompanied by spontaneous radiation due to electron transitions from higher to lower discrete energy levels, right down to the ground state. In the non-relativistic case, this emission is monochromatic. In the non-relativistic case, various frequencies are emitted, but lie within an order of magnitude of each other. The electron kinetic energy along the magnetic field varies from zero to a maximum value, due to the one-dimensional character of the motion along the field, between each pair of potential barriers corresponding to the discrete energy levels. The results may be relevant to describing gamma-ray flares of pulsars.  相似文献

Solar-type helium (He) and neon (Ne) in the Earths mantle were suggested to be the result of solar-wind loaded extraterrestrial dust that accumulated in deep-sea sediments and was subducted into the Earths mantle. To obtain additional constraints on this hypothesis, we analysed He, Ne and argon (Ar) in high pressure–low temperature metamorphic rocks representing equivalents of former pelagic clays and cherts from Andros (Cyclades, Greece) and Laytonville (California, USA). While the metasediments contain significant amounts of 4He, 21Ne and 40Ar due to U, Th and K decay, no solar-type primordial noble gases were observed. Most of these were obviously lost during metamorphism preceding 30 km subduction depth. We also analysed magnetic fines from two Pacific ODP drillcore samples, which contain solar-type He and Ne dominated by solar energetic particles (SEP). The existing noble gas isotope data of deep-sea floor magnetic fines and interplanetary dust particles demonstrate that a considerable fraction of the extraterrestrial dust reaching the Earth has lost solar wind (SW) ions implanted at low energies, leading to a preferential occurrence of deeply implanted SEP He and Ne, fractionated He/Ne ratios and measurable traces of spallogenic isotopes. This effect is most probably caused by larger particles, as these suffer more severe atmospheric entry heating and surface ablation. Only sufficiently fine-grained dust may retain the original unfractionated solar composition that is characteristic for the Earths mantle He and Ne. Hence, in addition to the problem of metamorphic loss of solar noble gases during subduction, the isotopic and elemental fractionation during atmospheric entry heating is a further restriction for possible subduction hypotheses.  相似文献
