Summary The dependence between Pn-wave velocities and the surface heat flow, temperature at the core-mantl boundary and thickness of the Earth's crust for continents (Europe, Asia, North America and Australia) was investigated statistically in connection with the problem of lateral inhomogeneities in the upper mantle. The relations obtained were compared with those determined under laboratory conditions. The conclusion is that temperature and pressure effects may provide additional explanations of the regional variations of Pn-wave velocities observed in most continents.

INacting in dependence on the temperature and supersaturation over the ice are considered in the 1 D SSconvection cloud model with detailed microphysics including freezing. Summary The Earth's crust and mantle structure in the region Crimea are investigated on the surface waves observations. For this investigation the long-period seismographs have been installed for the triangle of the seismic stations Simferopol, Alushta, Theodosiya. The phase velocities dispersion has been determined on the base of surface waves for the 8 earthquakes. The observed dispersion curves agree with the theoretical ones for the Earth's model with the crust's thickness of 36–40 km and with (in the mantle) the low velocity layer (V s =4.3 km/sec at the depth of about 120 km). . , , . 8 . 36–40 . Summary The magnification achieved with the standard sine-wave method using seismometers with the calibration and signal coils tightly wound on the same coil former can be erroneous at high frequencies due to the mutual inductance between both coils. An attempt was made to eliminate this influence from the calibration data. The application of theoretical equations was tested with a short-period digital seismograph.

Summary The algorithm of iterative geophysical tomography is presented. The medium is approximated smoothly by means of B-splines. The tww-point problem of ray computation is solved with the aid of paraxial approximation. The parameters of the medium are obtained from the iterative algorithm of minimizing the quadratic form. Two numerical 2-D examples are given.

Summary Body wave magnitudes of 384 and 440 teleseismic events in the distance range 9–100° are determined using short-period P-wave data obtained from the vertical component seismograms of Khonsa (Tirap district, Arunachal Pradesh) and Yaongyimsen (Mokukchung district, Nagaland) seismic stations. These magnitudes are compared with the corresponding body wave magnitudes reported by the National Earthquake Information Service of the United States Geological Survey. Average residuals for Khonsa and Yaongyimsen stations are found to be +0.09 and +0.48, respectively. It is observed that the average residuals (7) for both the stations decrease with respect to epicentral distance (), focal depth (h) and body wave magnitude (mb). For the Khonsa station, the respective linear relations are: =0.12–1×10–5 , M=0.22–7××10–5 h, M=1.96–0.356mb and similarly, for the Yaongyimsen station the relations are M=0.59–2×10–5 , M=0.54–19×10–5 h, M=2.56–0.391mb. The nature of the variation of residuals is found to be nearly similar for both the stations.

Summary The paper is concerned with the properties of a density distribution within the Earth. A system of density parameter constraints involving Stokes' coefficients of the gravity field and the parameters describing the Earth's figure is derived. A density model, whose parameters fit these constraints, accounts for the fine structure of the gravity field and Earth's figure. Additional condition imposed on the average spherical density model are derived; they guarantee that the average spherical model is compatible with the 3-D density model.

Summary Paleomagnetic investigations of sediments from the Early Quaternary enabled the variations of the geomagnetic field during reversals to be studied. Regularities in the motion of the virtual geomagnetic N paleopole and the related changes in the intensity of the geomagnetic field were determined. The initial phase of the reversal, which took place in the Eastern Hemisphere, is accompanied by an increase in the intensity of the geomagnetic field. A strong decrease occurred at the time the N paleopole was moving around30°N geographic latitude. After the irreversible reversal had been concluded, the intensity of the geomagnetic field stabilized at values corresponding to the field intensity prior to the reversal. The reversible reversal is accompanied by an repeated increase in the itensity of the geomagnetic field.

Summary A procedure of fast computation of body-wave ray synthetic seismograms in vertically inhomogeneous media is suggested. The procedure uses a special approximation of the velocitydepth distribution which guarantees continuity of the first and second derivatives of velocity and does not generate false low-velocity layers (oscillations in the velocity-depth function). The ZESY82 program package, which is based on the suggested procedure, is described. The point source with an arbitrary radiation pattern may be situated at any points of the model, the receivers are situated regularly or irregularly along any profile on the Earth's surface, containing the epicentre. Numerical examples of the synthetic record sections for a model of the Earth's crust and the uppermost mantle are given.

Summary Review has been made of the first results and perspectives of investigations in geophysics and bordering sciences (geology, geography, agrobiology, etc.) by means of manned orbital space laboratories. Relatively detailed discussion is given to the problems of the interpretation of terrain feature pictures from space. Attentively considered are the technique and results of the photometric processing of atmospheric photographs near the horizon with the purpose of studying atmospheric optical non-homogeneities (in particular, aerosol layers). Summary The ionospheric effects of the interplanetary magnetic field (IMF) sector boundary crossings are studied for the winters of 1963–69. They are considerably stronger for proton than for non-proton sector boundaries. There are two different types of effects. The geomagnetic type is a disturbance, observed in geomagnetic activity, the night-time ionosphere and the day-time F2 region near the geomagnetic equator. The effect in the ionosphere is interpreted in terms of the IMF sector boundary crossing related changes in geomagnetic activity. The tropospheric type is aquietening, observed in tropospheric vorticity and in the day-time mid-and low-latitude ionosphere (except the geomagnetic equator region). The mechanism of this effect remains unexplained.
