Mississippian nodular anhydrites beneath an unconformity in the subsurface of southern Saskatchewan are locally replaced by calcite, pyrite and celestite. Triassic clastics above the unconformity are green, rather than red, and a usually developed subunconformity alteration zone (where carbonates are dolomitized, and porosity is filled with anhydrite) is absent. The unconformity lacks karstic features (unlike in the USA), and probably formed in a hyperarid climate. Mississippian anhydrites near the unconformity are not preferentially dissolved, nor were they extensively hydrated. Anhydrite calcitization occurred only after the unconformity was shallowly buried by redbeds, and it probably involved sulphate-reducing bacteria. Hydrogen sulphide, generated by bacteria, reduced redbed pigments. The replacement calcite contains pseudomorphs and relicts of anhydrite, and pseudomorphs of secondary gypsum. These indicate calcitization occurred only after original Mississippian gypsum was altered to anhydrite and this, in turn, was partially converted back to secondary gypsum beneath the unconformity. Replacement occurred concurrently with the formation elsewhere of the dolomitized zone beneath the unconformity. Sulphur isotopic ratios of replacement pyrite are depleted relative to Mississippian sulphate values, consistent with the activities of sulphate-reducing bacteria. Carbon isotopic ratios of replacive calcites, however, do not support this interpretation, and are identical to those of Mississippian limestones. Simple replacement of sulphate by pore-water bicarbonate (in equilibrium with host limestones) is unlikely because protons generated during the reaction should have created acidic conditions in which calcite would have dissolved. A full explanation of the calcitization remains elusive, but may involve replacement occurring in an active groundwater system and/or bacterial sulphate reduction occurring upstream of the site of calcitization.  相似文献

Organic petrology (incident light microscopy) of Middle Devonian inter-reef laminates and Devonian-Mississippian epicontinental black shales, Williston Basin, Canada, indicates that algal bloom episodes and consequential bacterial activity played a significant role in the accumulation of amorphous, bituminite III-rich organic microfacies. Corpohuminite-like algal akinete cells produced by filamentous algae during algal bloom periods are persistent maceral inclusions within the potential hydrocarbon source rock intervals. These cells (%Ro mean range 0.24-0.90) are regarded as positive indicators of stressful palaeoenvironmental conditions. Unicellular Tasmanites and Leiosphaeridia marine alginite and variably degraded alginite remnants (“ghosts”) within the amorphous kerogen may be products of cell lysis, photo-oxidation and microbial alteration; these processes are characteristic of algal bloom periods. Minute (ca. 1 μm) spheroidal and coccoidal bacteria-like macerals are dispersed throughout the bituminite III network, attesting to the importance of microbial activity within the water column and sediment during and after organic matter accumulation. Dispersed granules, laminations and replacement textures of micrinite-like macerals within bituminite III are interpreted as remnants of microbial alteration rather than a residual product of thermal maturation and hydrocarbon generation.  相似文献

The Devonian Winnepegosis and Duperow Formations were examined in well 4-27-11-22W1, located in at the eastern edge of the Williston Basin in Manitoba. The variation in characteristic remanent magnetization (ChRM) direction and magnetic mineral carrier is obvious: the older Winnepegosis Formation has a primary or early post-depositional magnetization held in magnetite or pyrrhotite (n = 15; D = 324.1°, I = − 27.3°, α95 = 10.4°, k = 15.7), whereas the younger Duperow Formation magnetizations are carried by hematite and could be as late as Early Jurassic. The variability may be attributable to the intervening Prairie Evaporite acting as an aquitard to fluid migration.  相似文献

Carbon isotope studies have been carried out on marine Phanerozoic sediments of the Williston Basin, North America. Special attention was given to the recognition of systematic variations with age.δ 13C measurements on the carbonate fraction show a 3%0 depletion from the Cambrian to the Mississippian and a 1–2%0 enrichment to the Jurassic. Both the sign of these displacements and a good correlation with the organic carbon content suggest that real variations in the rate of photosynthesis may have been the driving force for these changes with age.Because of the large isotopic heterogeneities in the organic biomass, systematic fluctuations with age in the δ 13C-values of the total organic carbon record are hard to prove. Nevertheless, a significant 3%0 depletion was observed from the Devonian to the end of the Carboniferous. This depletion seems to occur on a worldwide scale. It is therefore proposed that a rise in the rate of photosynthesis as a consequence of the colonization of the continents by higher plants is the global cause of this displacement in the isotope record of the total organic carbon.The bitumen fraction does not show any systematic isotope variations with age.Comparison of coexisting δ 13Corg13Cbit pairs demonstrates that during the Ordovician-Mississippian time period no significant (> 1%0) differences in the isotope values of these two organic carbon sources can be observed. In contrast the bitumen fraction is depleted in 13C as compared to the total organic carbon in the Cambrian as well as in the Pennsylvanian-Cretaceous time interval. Several parameters, i.e. the depth of burial of these sediments, the 12(pristane/n-C17 + phytane/n-C18) ratio and the n-alkane distribution pattern support the theory that the rank of the organic matter may be responsible for the observed isotopic pattern.  相似文献

Samples collected from the Upper Ordovician Red River carbonates in a well at the centre of the Williston Basin revealed two paleomagnetic components with different inclinations, 60.3 ± 3.9° (k = 70.7, N = 12) and 20.4 ± 3.3° (k = 141.2, N = 8), but similar declination values in individual specimens. Inclination-only analysis indicates two possible scenarios for the age of these two magnetizations: in scenario (a) the timing of magnetization happened sometime between Late Ordovician to Devonian; and in scenario (b) there are two different remagnetizations, one that overlaps Pennsylvanian to Permian time while the other can have either a Late Jurassic or a Tertiary age. Whereas dolomitization and some isotopic data tend to support scenario (a), previous paleomagnetic data from the Williston Basin and from younger units in the same well, the tectonic evolution of the basin, and the hydrocarbon maturation pattern in the Red River carbonates all favour chemical remagnetization(s) driven by orogenic fluids during the Alleghenian and Laramide orogenies.  相似文献

The management of uranium tailings, generated as a by-product of ore processing, is particularly important to minimize the environmental footprint of the industry. A clear understanding of tailings slurry behavior is required at the time of deposition to help evaluate the storage capacity and life span of the containment facilities. The main purpose of this study was to investigate the segregation and self-weight settling properties of uranium tailings. Detailed laboratory investigations were conducted on tailings from 4, 5, and 6 % nominal mill feeds (high-grade McArthur River ores blended with special wastes on site) from the Cameco Key Lake operation. The results indicate that the three uranium tailings can be characterized as a sandy silt material with a negligible amount of clay. Their depositional behavior is governed by the initial solids content of the slurry. The investigated tailings showed insignificant segregation between 25 and 40 % initial solids content. The initial hydraulic conductivity during settling was about 10?4 m/s at a void ratio of 4 and was increased by half an order of magnitude for the 4 % mill feed, and by almost two orders of magnitude for the 5 and 6 % mill feeds at a void ratio of 8. Over the same range of initial void ratio, the settling potential increased threefold: from 8 to 24 % for the 4 % mill feed and from 12 to 36 % for the 5 and 6 % mill feeds. The better rate and amount of dewatering of future high mill feed tailings as compared to the current low mill feed tailings means that the onsite containment facility can store more tailings thereby supporting a longer life span of the mill.  相似文献

A climatological-cartographic study of nine years of crop-hail insurance data in Saskatchewan shows that a high proportion of total damages is done by storms which leave long, narrow tracks or swaths of hail at the ground. These individual hailstorms are long lived. At least 76 swaths 150 km or more in length occurred during the nine summers, indicating storm lifetimes of at least 3 h. More than half of these travelling thunderstorms persisted for 5 h or more, a few for as long as 8 to 10 h. Such longevity may permit improved forecasting and warning of the hail hazard from 50–60% of these storms.  相似文献

The concentration and areal distribution of selected metals (Pb, Zn, Cu, Cd, Ni, Fe, and Cr) in the sediments of the Calabar River were studied to determine the extent of anthropogenic input and to estimate the effects of dumping industrial waste materials into the river. The concentrations of Pb, Zn, and Cu indicate relatively moderate pollution mainly on the left-hand side of the river while Ni, Cr, Co, Cd, and Fe levels are below values found to have adverse effects on the lives of marine biota. High metal contents are found close to industrial establishments and so enhanced metal concentrations are related to industrial sewage and metal leaching from garbage and solid waste dumps.  相似文献

微生物岩的原始定义指底栖微生物主导形成的沉积体或岩石体。笔者对该概念进行了扩充,认为微生物岩除了包括叠层石、凝块石、纹层石、核形石、均一石之外,还应该包括微生物骨架岩、微生物粘结岩、非钙化浮游或漂浮微生物形成的模铸岩、矿化浮游或漂浮微生物形成的颗粒岩和泥粒岩。P-T界线地层微生物岩的特征是具有由较粗矿物晶体(主要是方解石,其次是白云石)组成的斑点状、树枝状、网状结构的灰岩。这3种结构分别称为斑点状体、树枝状体、网状体,在露头上呈暗色,在薄片中呈浅色,一般由无定形的亮晶充填体和其间的微亮晶组成。亮晶充填体是指无定形的孔洞被不同成岩期形成的矿物充填形成的结构体,因成岩作用各异,造成不同层位、不同地点的亮晶充填体内部的矿物类型和充填顺序存在差异;所有的亮晶充填体都不具有壁,故不是钙化化石。通过形态、大小和生态比较,以及形成演化分析,认为亮晶充填体的前身是漂浮蓝细菌微囊菌,胶鞘是微囊菌形成模铸化石的关键因素。亮晶充填体是表层水漂浮生活的微囊菌沉入海底后,被泥晶沉积物掩埋或者被早期海底胶结物胶结,在泥晶沉积物半固结或固结之后腐烂留下的孔洞被后期成岩作用形成的矿物充填形成的。P-T界线地层微生物岩段顶部遭受成岩作用程度高,树枝状体和网状体中的亮晶充填体的轮廓基本都被破坏,变成微亮晶和亮晶,以前被学者解释为凝块石;但斑点状体、树枝状体、网状体是成岩流体沿着亮晶充填体或其他化石丰富的地方运移形成较粗的晶体而造成的,并不符合凝块石的定义。同时,少数学者把树枝状体本身当成底栖生物,也是没有充分认识树枝状体的矿物组成而做的解释。该微生物岩段含有钙化的小球状化石和同心层状化石,但它们不是组成微生物岩的主体。  相似文献

The particulate organic matter in < 63 µm surface sediments from the Mackenzie River and its main tributaries was studied using Rock-Eval pyrolysis and organic petrology. The organic matter in the sediments is dominated by refractory residual organic carbon (RC) of mainly terrigenous nature, as indicated by abundant inertinite, vitrinite, and type III kerogen. Sediments from the tributaries contained significantly more algal-derived organic matter than from the main channel of the river, highlighting the importance of low-energy system dynamics in the tributaries, which allows modest algal production, more accumulation, and better preservation of autochthonous organic matter. This is particularly true for tributaries fed by lacustrine systems, which showed the highest S1 and S2 fractions, and consequently higher total particulate organic carbon (POC) in the basin. Organic petrology of the sediment samples confirms abundant liptinitic materials (i.e., fat-rich structured algae, spores and pollen, cuticles, and resins). Forest fire and coal deposits are also confirmed to contribute to the basin. Assuming that suspended and fine surfacial sediments have a similar OC composition, the Mackenzie River is estimated to deliver a total POC flux of 1.1 Mt C/yr to its delta, of which 85% is residual carbon with liptinitic OC (S1 + S2) and S3 accounting for another 9% and 6%, respectively.  相似文献

Sixty-five inflow samples from access shafts were collected at three separate potash mines in order to construct three 1000 m deep hydrochemical profiles. Bromine concentrations, and δD and δ18O stable isotopic compositions, increase with depth in each case. Measured isotopic ratios have not changed in 15+ years since the mine-inflows were first sampled, implying little change in the hydraulic regimes at the mines over time. However, the bromine concentrations are typically a factor of five lower than previously reported. Newer analytical techniques have improved the accuracy, precision and resolution of the hydrochemical profiles. Results indicate that the salinity of the inflow waters originated as mixtures of evaporatively concentrated seawater, meteoric water, and brine derived from halite dissolution. Extremely concentrated brines (TDS > 525 g/L) were found at the Cory and Allan potash mines some 55 km apart, but their role in the paleohydrogeology of the basin remains uncertain.  相似文献

The importance of geochronology in the study of mineral deposits in general, and of unconformity-type uranium deposits in particular, resides in the possibility to situate the critical ore-related processes in the context of the evolution of the physical and chemical conditions in the studied area. The present paper gives the results of laser step heating 40Ar/39Ar dating of metamorphic host-rock minerals, pre-ore and syn-ore alteration clay minerals, and laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometer (LA-ICP-MS) U/Pb dating of uraninite from a number of basement- and sediment-hosted unconformity-related deposits in the Athabasca Basin, Canada. Post-peak metamorphic cooling during the Trans-Hudson Orogen of rocks from the basement occurred at ca 1,750 Ma and gives a maximum age for the formation of the overlying Athabasca Basin. Pre-ore alteration occurred simultaneously in both basement- and sandstone-hosted mineralizations at ca 1,675 Ma, as indicated by the 40Ar/39Ar dating of pre-ore alteration illite and chlorite. The uranium mineralization age is ca 1,590 Ma, given by LA-ICP-MS U/Pb dating of uraninite and 40Ar/39Ar dating of syn-ore illite, and is the same throughout the basin and in both basement- and sandstone-hosted deposits. The mineralization event, older than previously proposed, as well as several fluid circulation events that subsequently affected all minerals studied probably correspond to far-field, continent-wide tectonic events such as the metamorphic events in Wyoming and the Mazatzal Orogeny (ca 1.6 to 1.5 Ga), the Berthoud Orogeny (ca 1.4 Ga), the emplacement of the McKenzie mafic dyke swarms (ca 1.27 Ga), the Grenville Orogeny (ca 1.15 to 1 Ga), and the assemblage and break-up of Rodinia (ca 1 to 0.85 Ga). The results of the present work underline the importance of basin evolution between ca 1.75 Ga (basin formation) and ca 1.59 Ga (ore deposition) for understanding the conditions necessary for the formation of unconformity-type uranium deposits. Ultramafic hornfelses containing the assemblages hornblende + olivine + spinel + magnetite, and clinopyroxene + olivine + spinel + magnetite, are reported from two localities in the Biggenden Beds in southeastern Queensland. They are associated with mafic hornfelses in the contact metamorphic aureoles of the Mungore Adamellite and the Wateranga Gabbro. Chemical composition and minerology of the olivine + amphibole + spinel + magnetite hornfelses suggest that they represent metamorphosed picritic rocks, or possibly, altered serpentinites (blackwall rocks), whereas the clinopyroxene + olivine + spinel + magnetite hornfelses are interpreted as metamorphosed altered clinopyroxene‐rich picritic rocks. Cr‐Fe spinel relations in the hornfelses indicate partial homogenisation of primary chromian spinel with secondary magnetite ± ferrichromite during contact metamorphism.  相似文献

Analyses for silica in the interstitial water of five cores from the southeast Pacific are presented. Silica is enriched in these interstitial waters resulting in a vertical flux of silica of between 10 and 50 μmol cm?2 yr?1 from the sediment into the overlaying seawater. This flux is generated by the dissolution of biogenic silica, the dissolution of which is increased in areas of bottom water turbulence. The Si, Al and calculated opal (Leinen, 1977) contents of the bulk sediment of these cores are also presented. Small scale variations over depth intervals of tens of centimetres are present as a result of chaning conditions of sedimentation.  相似文献

An attempt is made to correlate and separate in terms of style and time two contrasting sets of structural elements in the northwestern part of the Appalachian Uplands in the Province of Quebec, Canada. There is sufficient evidence to indicate that a fold system with north-south trending axes is superimposed on a fold system with east-west axes. It is suggested that the two sets of structures represent pulses of one long-continued deformation accompanied by corresponding early and late phases of metamorphism.
Zusammenfassung Es wurde versucht, in den Appalachen des südöstlichen Teiles der Provinz Quebec, Kanada, zwei ungleichzeitige tektonische Systeme verschiedenen Baustils zu trennen. Die komplexen Kleinstrukturen zeigen, da\ Ost-West streichende Faltenachsen von einer jüngeren Nord-Süd-Faltung überprägt worden sind. Der Autor ist der Meinung, da\ die zwei tektonischen Systeme, die von einer frühen und späten Phase der Metamorphose begleitet werden, den zeitlich getrennten Verformungsstadien einer Orogenese entsprechen.

The Rabbit Lake U mine in-pit tailings management facility (TMF) (425 m long×300 m wide×91 m deep) is located in northern Saskatchewan, Canada. The objectives of this study were to quantify the distribution of As phases in the tailings and evaluate the present-day geochemical controls on dissolved As. These objectives were met by analyzing pore fluid samples collected from the tailings body for dissolved constituents, measuring Eh, pH, and temperature of tailings core and pore fluid samples, conducting sequential extractions on solid samples, conducting geochemical modeling of pore fluid chemistry using available thermodynamic data, and by reviewing historical chemical mill process records. Dissolved As concentrations in 5 monitoring wells installed within the tailings body ranged from 9.6 to 71 mg/l. Pore fluid in the wells had a pH between 9.3 and 10.3 and Eh between +58 and +213 mV. Sequential extraction analyses of tailings samples showed that the composition of the solid phase As changed at a depth of 34 m. The As above 34 m was primarily associated with amorphous Fe and metal hydroxides while the As below 34 m was associated with Ca, likely as amorphous poorly ordered calcium arsenate precipitates. The change in the dominant As solid phases at this depth was attributed to the differences in the molar ratio of Fe to As in the mill tailings. Below 34 m it was <2 whereas above 34 m it was >4. The high Ca/As ratio during tailings neutralization would likely precipitate Ca4(OH)2(AsO4)2:4H2O type Ca arsenate minerals. Geochemical modeling suggested that if the pore fluids were brought to equilibrium with this Ca-arsenate, the long-term dissolved As concentrations would range between 13 and 126 mg/l.  相似文献

Mean July and January temperatures are reconstructed from radiocarbon-dated fossil beetle assemblages, yielding a synthesis of palaeoclimatic history of the regions south of the Laurentide Ice Sheet in North America from 35 000 to 8500 yr BP. Mean July temperatures close to the last glacial maximum were 11–12°C colder than present; mean January temperatures were possibly 10–19°C colder. Mutual climatic range analyses of the beetle assemblages show warming of mean summer temperatures as early as 13.7 kyr, although ice-proximal sites were consistently about 5°C cooler than ice-distal sites. Late-glacial mean summer temperatures peaked between 12 and 11 kyr, then remained fairly constant through the early Holocene. Mean winter temperatures did not reach modern values until after 10 kyr.  相似文献

The Judith River Formation forms an important regional aquifer in southwestern Saskatchewan, Canada. This aquifer is used for domestic and agricultural purposes in some areas and supports oil and gas production in other areas. As a result, the available data come from a range of sources and integration is required to provide an overview of aquifer characteristics. Here, data from oil and gas databases are combined with data from groundwater resource assessments. Analysis of cores, drill-stem tests and pumping tests provide a good overview of the physical hydrogeology of the Judith River Aquifer. Water chemistry data from oil and gas databases were less helpful in understanding the chemical hydrogeology due contamination of samples and unreliable laboratory analyses. Analytical modeling of past pumping in the aquifer indicates that decreases in hydraulic head exceeding 2 m are possible over distances of 10s of kilometers. Similar decreases in head should be expected for additional large withdrawals of groundwater from the Judith River Aquifer. Long-term groundwater abstraction should be limited by low pumping rates. Higher pumping rates appear to be possible for short-term uses, such as those required by the oil and gas industry.  相似文献
