In this paper, we analyze the physical properties of dark mottles in the chromospheric network using two‐dimensional spectroscopic observations in Hα obtained with the Göttingen Fabry‐Perot Spectrometer in the Vacuum Tower Telescope at the Observatory del Teide, Tenerife. Cloud modeling was applied to measure the mottles' optical thickness, source function, Doppler width, and line‐of‐sight velocity. Using these measurements, the number density of hydrogen atoms in levels 1 and 2, total particle density, electron density, temperature, gas pressure, and mass density parameters were determined with the method of Tsiropoula & Schmieder (1997). We also analyzed the temporal behaviour of a mottle using cloud parameters. Our result shows that it is dominated by 3 minute signals in source function, and 5 minutes or more in velocity (© 2011 WILEY‐VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA, Weinheim)  相似文献

An analysis of the structure of the Jovian atmosphere, primarily based on center-to-limb variations (CTLV) of the equivalent width of the hydrogen quadrupole 4-0 S(1) line, is presented. These data require that the atmosphere have regions of both long- and short- scattering mean free paths. Two alternative cloud structures which fit the data are developed. The first is a two-cloud model (TCM) consisting of a thin upper cloud and a lower semi-infinite cloud, with absorbing gas between the clouds and above the upper cloud. The second model is a reflecting-scattering model (RSM), in which a gas layer lies above a haze consisting of scattering particles and absorbing gas. The cloud-scattering phase function in both models must have a strong forward peak. The CTLV data require, however, the presence of a backscattering lobe on the phase function, with the backscattering intensity about 4% of the forward scattering. The decrease in reflectivity of all regions from the visible to the ultraviolet is explained by the presence of dust particles mixed with the gas. Most of the ultraviolet absorption in the atmosphere must occur above the upper cloud layer. Particles with a uniform distribution of radii from 0.0 to 0.1 μm with a complex index of refraction varying as λ?2.5 are used. The contrast in reflectivity between belts and zones may be explained by the larger concentration of dust in the belts than in the zones. Spatially resolved ultraviolet limb-darkening curves will help to determine the dust distribution of the Jovian atmosphere. The visible methane bands at λλ 6190, 5430, and 4860 Å are analyzed in terms of these models. We derive a methane-to-hydrogen mixing ratio of 2.8 × 10?3, which is about 4.5 times the value for solar composition.  相似文献

Key Properties of Solar Chromospheric Line Formation Process   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
The distribution or wavelength-dependence of the formation regions of frequently used solar lines, Hα,Hβ,CaIIH and CaII8542,in quiet Sun,faint and bright flares is explored in the unpolarized case.We stress four aspects characterising the property of line formation process:1) width of line formation core;2) line formation region;3)influence of the temperature minimum region; and 4) wavelength ranges within which one can obtain pure chromospheric and photospheric filtergrams. It is shown that the above four aspects depend strongly on the atmospheric physical condition and the lines used. The formation regions of all the wavelength points within a line may be continuously distributed over one depth domain or discretely distributed because of no contribution coming from the temperature minimum region, an important domain in the solar atmosphere that determines the distribution pattern of escape photons. On the other hand, the formation region of one wavelength point may cover only one height range or spread over two domains which are separated again by the temperature minimum region. Different lines may form in different regions in the quiet Sun. However, these line formation regions become closer in solar flaring regions. Finally, though the stratification of line-of-sight velocity can alter the position of the line formation core within the line band and result in the asymmetry of the line formation core about the shifted line center, it can only lead to negligible changes in the line formation region or the line formation core width. All these results can be instructive to solar filtering observations.  相似文献

We discuss the study of solar magnetic fields based on the photospheric vector magnetograms of solar active regions which were obtained at Huairou Solar Observing Station near Beijing in the period of 22nd and 23th solar cycles. The measurements of the chromospheric magnetic field and the spatial configuration of the field at the lower solar atmosphere inferred by the distribution of the solar photospheric and chromospheric magnetic field. After the analysis on the formation process of delta configuration in some super active regions based on the photospheric vector magnetogram observations, some results are obtained: (1) The analysis of magnetic writhe of whole active regions cannot be limited in the strong field of sunspots, because the contribution of the fraction of decayed magnetic field is non-negligible. (2) The magnetic model of kink magnetic ropes, proposed to be generated in the subatmosphere, is not consistent with the evolution of large-scale twisted photospheric transverse magnetic field and the relationship with magnetic shear in some delta active regions completely. (3) The proposition is that the large-scale delta active regions are formed from contribution by highly sheared non-potential magnetic flux bundles generated in the subatmosphere. We present some results of a study of the magnetic helicity. We also compare these results with other data sets obtained by magnetographs (or Stokes polarimeters) at different observatories, and analyze the basic chirality of the magnetic field in the solar atmosphere.  相似文献

We employ observationally determined intrinsic velocity widths and column densities of damped Lyman alpha (Lyα) systems at high redshift to investigate the distribution of baryons in protogalaxies within the context of a standard cold dark matter (CDM) model. We proceed under the assumption that damped Lyα systems represent a population of cold, rotationally supported, protogalactic discs, and that the abundance of dark matter haloes is well approximated by a CDM model with critical density and vanishing cosmological constant. Using conditional cross-sections to observe a damped system with a given velocity width and column density, we compare observationally inferred velocity width and column density distributions to the corresponding theoretically determined distributions for a variety of disc parameters and CDM normalizations. In general, we find that the observations cannot be reproduced by the models for most disc parameters and CDM normalizations. Whereas the column density distribution favours small discs with large neutral gas fraction, the velocity width distribution favours large and thick discs with small neutral gas fraction. The possible resolutions of this problem in the context of this CDM model may be (1) an increased contribution of rapidly rotating discs within massive dark matter haloes to damped Lyα absorption, or (2) the abandoning of simple disc models within this CDM model for damped Lyα systems at high redshift. Here the first possibility may be achieved by supposing that damped Lyα system formation occurs only in haloes with fairly large circular velocities, and the second possibility may result from a large contribution of mergers and double discs to damped Lyα absorption at high redshift.  相似文献

We compare the observed center-to-limb distribution of 86 white-light flares (WLFs) with calculated distributions derived from five flare models, each covering different heights, temperatures, and densities in the solar atmosphere. Considering the limited statistics and the possibility of selection effects in reporting WLFs, the following results may be considered tentative: (1) WLFs cannot be modeledsolely by high-altitude optically thin sources, by optically thin chromospheric sources, or by photospheric sources located less than 150 km above the 5000 = 1 level; (2) middle photospheric sources extending somewhat higher than 150 km provide the best fit to the observed center-to-limb distribution, and (3) middle photospheric sources not exceeding 150 km altitude combined with chromospheric or higher-altitude sources are acceptable. An important feature of this work is that the methods used in the analysis are entirely independent of spectral analysis; yet spectral analysis has provided evidence for both photospheric and chromospheric components in WLFs.Operated by the Association of Universities for Research in Astronomy, Inc., under cooperative agreement with the National Science Foundation. We present results of the study of chromospheric and photospheric line-of-sight velocity fields in the young active region NOAA 11024. Multi-layer, multi-wavelength observational data were used for the analysis of the emerging flux in this active region. Spectropolarimetric observations were carried out with the telescope THEMIS on Tenerife (Canary Islands) on 4 July 2009. In addition, space-borne data from SOHO/MDI, STEREO and GOES were also considered. The combination of data from ground- and space-based telescopes allowed us to study the dynamics of the lower atmosphere of the active region with high spatial, spectral, and temporal resolutions. THEMIS spectra show strong temporal variations of the velocity in the chromosphere and photosphere for various activity features: two pores, active and quiet plage regions, and two surges. The range of variations of the chromospheric line-of-sight velocity at the heights of the formation of the Hα core was extremely large. Both upward and downward motions were observed in these layers. In particular, a surge with upward velocities up to ?73 km?s?1 was detected. In the photosphere, predominantly upward motions were found, varying from ?3.1 km?s?1 upflows to 1.4 km?s?1 downflows in different structures. The velocity variations at different levels in the lower atmosphere are compatible with the emergence of magnetic flux.  相似文献

A distribution map of the large-scale chromospheric Doppler velocities on the solar disk for 5 June 2002 is presented. The map was obtained using a 2D-spectroscopy technique within the He?i 10830 Å line. The spatial resolution of the map is about 30 arc sec. The map demonstrates a downflow in the chromosphere over active regions, especially significant around the spots and inside the plages. Positive Doppler velocities correspond to strong magnetic field areas, regardless of the field sign. Three major chromospheric outflow zones are observed: an equatorial and two polar ones. Each area of substantial negative Doppler velocities matches a zone of weak intensity of inner corona observed within the Fe?ix-x 171 Å line by the SOHO spacecraft. A Doppler velocity histogram and the dependence of the Doppler velocities on the cosine of the heliocentric angle for the solar disk are calculated. The total mass outflow from the upper chromosphere is estimated as 2×1013 g s?1. Four percent of this amount is sufficient to produce the fast solar wind.

Images from three filters of the Voyager 1 wide-angle camera were used to measure the continuum reflectivity and spectral gradient near 6000 Å and the 6190-Å band methane/continuum ratio for a variety of cloud features in Jupiter's atmosphere. The dark “barge” features in the North Equatorial Belt have anomalously strong positive continuum spectral gradients suggesting unique composition, probably not elemental sulfur. Methane absorption was shown at unprecedented spatial scales for the Great Red Spot and its immediate environment, for a dark barge feature in the North Equatorial Belt, and for two hot spot and plume regions in the North Equatorial Belt. Some small-scale features, unresolvable at ground-based resolution, show significant enhancement in methane absorption. Any enhancement in methane absorption is conspicuously absent in both hot spot regions with 5-μm brightness temperature 255°K. Methane absorption and 5-μm emission are correlated in the vicinity of the Great Red Spot but are anticorrelated in one of the plume hot spot regions. Methane absorption and simultaneously maps of 5-μm brightness temperature were quantitatively compared to realistic cloud structure models which include multiple scattering at 5 μm as well as in the visible. A curve in parameter space defines the solution to any observed quantity, ranging from a shallow atmosphere and thin NH3 cloud to a deep atmosphere with a thick ammonia cloud. Without additional constraints, such as center-to-limb information, it is impossible to specify the NH3 cloud optical depth and pressure of a deeper cloud top independently. Variability in H2 quadrupole lines was also investigated and it was found that the constancy of the 4-0 S(1)-line equivalent width is consistent with the constancy of the methane 6190-Å band equivalent width at ground-based resolution, but the much greater variability of the 3-0 S(1) line is inconsistent with either the methane band or 4-0 S(1) line. In hot spot regions the 255°K brightness temperature requires a cloud optical depth of about 2 or less at 5 μm in the NH3 cloud layer. To be consistent with the observed 6190-Å methane absorption in hot spot regions, the NH3 cloud optical depth in the visible is about 7.5, implying that aerosols in hot spot regions have effective radii near 1 μm or less.  相似文献

A brief summary of observations of inhomogeneities in the solar atmosphere and progress in the theoretical analysis of two-dimensional model atmospheres is given. In particular, it is asserted that reliable reference models of the mean temperature, pressure, etc. may be derived only by averaging over the horizontal coordinates of a two- or three-dimensional model. In discussion of a wide variety of cases including strong chromospheric lines, weak photospheric lines, and continuum radiation, it is shown that although the derivation of mean values by first averaging over the fluctuations in the data and then applying a one-dimension analysis is an obvious first approximation, it may lead to errors of a gross qualitative nature. Thus the recent deductions by several authors of very small temperature gradients in the upper regions of sunspots are shown to be subject to considerable doubt.  相似文献

We perform the detailed imaging and spectroscopic analysis of two coronal bright points (CBPs). These CBPs are dominated by bright dots or elongated bright features. Their rapid temporal variations lead to a continuous change in their overall morphology at chromospheric and transition-region (TR) temperatures. A 3D potential magnetic field extrapolation predicts the dominance of magnetic loops in the extent of both CBPs, which are clearly visible at the Si iv 1393.75 Å line formation temperature. Short, low-lying magnetic loops or loop segments are the integral parts of these CBPs at TR temperature. A correlation between the various parameters of Mg ii resonance lines (e.g. intensity, Doppler velocity, velocity gradient) is present in the region of magnetic loops or loop segments. However, a quiet-Sun (QS) region does not show any correlation. Doppler velocities as well as the full width at half maximum (FWHM) of these lines are very prominent in the magnetic loops and loop segments compared to the Doppler velocities and FWHM in the QS region. Higher red-shifts and FWHM at TR temperatures are directly related to the dominance of the energy release process in these regions in the framework of the nanoflare model. A magnetogram from the Helioseismic and Magnetic Imager (HMI) onboard the Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO) reveals the existence of two opposite magnetic polarities in the extent of both CBPs, which is a very well established result. We find that one CBP is formed by the convergence of two opposite magnetic polarities, while the other is triggered by the emergence of a new magnetic field prior to the onset of this CBP.  相似文献

One significant difference between the atmospheres of stars and exoplanets is the presence of condensed particles (clouds or hazes) in the atmosphere of the latter. In current 1D models clouds and hazes are treated in an approximate way by raising the surface albedo, or adopting measured Earth cloud properties. The former method introduces errors to the modeled spectra of the exoplanet, as clouds shield the lower atmosphere and thus modify the spectral features. The latter method works only for an exact Earth-analog, but it is challenging to extend to other planets. The main goal of this paper is to develop a self-consistent microphysical cloud model for 1D atmospheric codes, which can reproduce some observed properties of Earth, such as the average albedo, surface temperature, and global energy budget. The cloud model is designed to be computationally efficient, simple to implement, and applicable for a wide range of atmospheric parameters for planets in the habitable zone.We use a 1D, cloud-free, radiative–convective, and photochemical equilibrium code originally developed by Kasting, Pavlov, Segura, and collaborators as basis for our cloudy atmosphere model. The cloud model is based on models used by the meteorology community for Earth’s clouds. The free parameters of the model are the relative humidity and number density of condensation nuclei, and the precipitation efficiency. In a 1D model, the cloud coverage cannot be self-consistently determined, thus we treat it as a free parameter. We apply this model to Earth (aerosol number density 100 cm?3, relative humidity 77%, liquid cloud fraction 40%, and ice cloud fraction 25%) and find that a precipitation efficiency of 0.8 is needed to reproduce the albedo, average surface temperature and global energy budget of Earth. We perform simulations to determine how the albedo and the climate of a planet is influenced by the free parameters of the cloud model. We find that the planetary climate is most sensitive to changes in the liquid water cloud fraction and precipitation efficiency. The advantage of our cloud model is that the cloud height and the droplet sizes are self-consistently calculated, both of which influence the climate and albedo of exoplanets.  相似文献

In this paper we present the observational results of chromospheric and photospheric magnetograms in active regions obtained at the Huairou Solar Observing Station of the Beijing Astronomical Observatory. Simultaneous observations of the chromospheric and photospheric magnetic fields enable us to construct a possible configuration of the magnetic field in the solar atmosphere. The chromospheric magnetic field shows more diffusion than the photospheric magnetic field and consists of fibril-like features. We also discuss the possible configuration of the magnetic shear in highly sheared active regions.  相似文献

The scientific objectives of a geodetic experiment based on a network of landers, such as NEIGE (NEtlander Ionosphere and Geodesy Experiment) are to improve the current knowledge of Mars' interior and atmosphere dynamics. Such a network science experiment allows monitoring the motions of the Martian rotation axis with a precision of a few centimeters (or milli-arc-seconds (mas)) over annual and sub-annual periods. Thereto, besides radio tracking of a Mars orbiter from the Earth, radio Doppler shifts between this orbiter and several landers at the planet's surface will be performed. From the analysis of these radio Doppler data, it is possible to reconstruct the orbiter motion and Mars' orientation in space. The errors on the orbit determination (position and velocity of the orbiter) have an impact on the geodetic parameters determination from the Doppler shifts and must be removed from the signal in order to achieve a high enough accuracy. In this paper, we perform numerical simulations of the two Doppler signals involved in such an experiment to estimate the impact of the spacecraft angular momentum desaturations on the determination of Mars' orientation variations. The attitude control of the orbiter needs such desaturation maneuvers regularly repeated. They produce velocity variations that must be taken into account when determining the orbit. For our simulations, we use a priori models of the Martian rotation and introduce the spacecraft velocity variations induced by each desaturation event. By a least-squares adjustment of the simulated Doppler signals, we then estimate the orbiter velocity variations and the parameters of the Mars' rotation model. We show that these velocity variations are ill resolved when the spacecraft is not tracked, therefore requiring a near-continuous tracking from the Earth to accurately determine the orbit. In such conditions we show that only 15- of lander-orbiter tracking per week allows recovering Mars' orientation parameters with a precision of a few mas over a period of 1 Martian year.  相似文献

To identify and understand the underlying physical mechanisms of total solar and UV irradiance variability and to estimate the contribution of various chromospheric features to UV irradiance, detailed analysis of spatially resolved data is required. The various chromospheric features have been segregated and different parameters have been derived from CaII K Spectroheliograms of NSO/Sac Peak and Kodaikanal Observatory and compared with UV irradiance flux measured in MgII h and k lines by NOAA 9 satellite. The important results of this detailed analysis of CaII K Images of 1992 together with UV irradiance data will be discussed in this paper.  相似文献

Homogeneous plane-parallel model atmospheres for solar flares have been constructed to approximately simulate observations of flares. The wings of the Ca II lines have been used to derive flare upper photosphere models, which indicate temperature increases of ~100 K over the temperature distribution in the pre-existing facula at a height of 300 km above τ5000 = 1. In the case of flares covering sunspots the temperature rise seems to occur much higher in the atmosphere. We solve the transfer and statistical equilibrium equations for a three-level hydrogen atom and a five-level calcium atom in order to obtain the chromospheric flare models. The general properties of flares, including n e, N 2, linear thickness, and Lyman continuum intensity are approximately reproduced. We find that with increasing flare importance the height of the upper chromosphere and transition region occur lower in the solar atmosphere, accounting for the factor of 60–600 increase in pressure in these regions relative to the quiet Sun. The Ca II line profiles agree with observations only by assuming a macro-velocity distribution that increases with height. Also the chromospheric parts of flares appear to be highly inhomogeneous. We show that shock and particle heated flare models do not agree with the observations and propose a thermal response model for flares. In particular, it appears that heating in the photosphere is an essential aspect of flares.  相似文献

Observations of rotational modulation of continuum brightness and photospheric and chromospheric spectral-line profiles of late-type stars indicate the presence of very inhomogeneous surface temperature distributions. We present three stellar examples (VY Ari, HR 7275, HU Vir) where time-series photometry is used to trace the evolution of spotted regions. Simultaneous spectroscopy and Doppler imaging for one of the three stars (HU Virgo, Fig. 1) makes it possible to compute the temperature distribution of the photosphere and the relative intensity distribution of parts of the chromosphere (from CaII K and H line profiles). The combination of time-series spot modeling and Doppler imaging enabled us to determine thesign and amount of differential surface rotation on HU Vir. We found a big, cool polar spot (see figure below) and a differential (surface) rotation law where higher-latitude regions rotate faster than lower-latitude regions (opposite to what we see on the Sun). Currently, this ensemble of techniques - time-series photometry and photospheric and chromospheric Doppler imaging - is only applicable to stars overactive by approximately a factor of 100 as compared to the active Sun, e.g. the evolved components in RS CVn-type binaries and some rapidly-rotating, single, pre-main sequence stars or giant stars. Stellar rotation is a fundamental parameter for (magnetic) activity. Starspots, or any other surface inhomogeneities, allow one to derive very precise stellar rotation rates and, if coupled with seismological observations of solar-type stars, could provide information on the internal angular momentum distribution in overactive late-type stars. To be published in Astronomy & Astrophysics.  相似文献

We present a new automated algorithm to identify, track, and characterize small-scale brightening associated with solar eruptive phenomena observed in Hα. The temporal, spatially localized changes in chromospheric intensities can be separated into two categories: flare ribbons and sequential chromospheric brightenings (SCBs). Within each category of brightening we determine the smallest resolvable locus of pixels, a kernel, and track the temporal evolution of the position and intensity of each kernel. This tracking is accomplished by isolating the eruptive features, identifying kernels, and linking detections between frames into trajectories of kernels. We fully characterize the evolving intensity and morphology of the flare ribbons by observing the tracked flare kernels in aggregate. With the location of SCB and flare kernels identified, they can easily be overlaid on complementary data sets to extract Doppler velocities and magnetic-field intensities underlying the kernels. This algorithm is adaptable to any dataset to identify and track solar features.  相似文献

The distribution of oscillation-amplitude for Doppler shifts in chromospheric lines is computed as a function of position on the disk and time frequency. High amplitude regions are restricted to a small part of the solar surface. Propagation modes are investigated with respect to the oscillation amplitude in the K line. Waves seem to be standing or evanescent for most of the points (small amplitude in K) and progressive for some other ones, with perhaps upward and downward motions (partial reflections). Mechanical energy could only escape into corona from narrow chromospheric structures.  相似文献

The evolutionary and spatial characteristics of the motions in the flaring chromosphere of a 2B/M2.3 flare are investigated by analyzing the asymmetry in the Hα profiles. The possibility of reconciling the results of observations with the theory of chromospheric evaporation is considered. The spectroscopic Hα observations of the flare performed with the KG-2 CrAO coronagraph with a temporal resolution of 5–10 s and a spatial resolution as high as 1 arcsec cover all stages of flare development. The following results have been obtained: (1) The Hα profile asymmetry is a general characteristic of the flare emission irrespective of its intensity and its belonging to different structural features and phases of flare development. (2) Most of the Hα emission profiles in flare regions exhibit a red asymmetry. However, a blue asymmetry was observed in small local regions at all stages of flare development. (3) A red asymmetry that appeared before the onset of the impulsive phase and persisted after its end was observed at the sites of main energy release, i.e., the energy source responsible for the dynamical processes in the flare came into operation earlier and existed longer than the HXR emission. (4) The asymmetry pattern changed with flare phase: the red wing intensity dominated in the pre-impulsive phase and at the onset of the impulsive and gradual phases (while the line core was unshifted or slightly shifted). At the maximum of the impulsive phase, the nearly symmetric profiles with extended wings were redshifted as a whole, i.e., the entire emitting volume moved down with a velocity of several tens of km/s. This type of asymmetry cannot be explained by the dynamical model of chromospheric condensation (Canfield and Gayley 1987). (5) The Hα profiles show no evidence of chromospheric heating by a beam of nonthermal electrons during the impulsive phase (Canfield et al. 1984). (6) The lifetime of the downflows and the change in their velocities with time are inconsistent with the dynamical model of chromospheric condensation (Fisher 1989). (7) The morphological features of the velocity field are also inconsistent with the theory of chromospheric evaporation, because the highest differently directed velocities were detected at the flare loop tops, not at the sites of main energy release. We conclude that the investigated flare shows spectral features that are inconsistent with the standard chromospheric evaporation model.  相似文献
